SQL Server 2008 :: Changing Collation Of Instance
Sep 15, 2015
Is it possible to change the collation of your instance?
As far as I know it is not possible to change the collation once SQL Server has been installed.
When I said that SQL needs to be reinstalled at work the guys sent me this link: [URL]....
I ran it exactly like that but the collation didn't change.
I have also restarted the services but the collation is still the same.
Am I running this code wrong or am I right about not being able to change the collation after installation?

Hello,
I've restored a SQL Server 2000 database with a Latin1_General_BIN collation from a .dmp file to a SQL Server 2005 server with a default collation of SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. When I try to change the database collation I get hundreds of the following error:
The object 'CK_PM10200_GLPOSTD_00AF8CF' is dependent on database collation. So, in this case, is it even possible to change the collation if there are objects in the database that are dependent on it?
Thanks,
Bruce

I am using SQL Server 2008. In ServerProperty function, there are two properties called “Collation” and “CollationID”. In some cases, I will only know the CollationID. Is it possible get the collation name from the CollationID? Is there a function called CollationNameFromID?

I need to change the default collation of all dbs on all my servers to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI from SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. We need to do compares and sorts and want to ignore accents -- something that wasn't clear when we built the servers. I know this has to do with "re-building databases" -- maybe even including the master -- but I'm not certain exactly what this means. Thanks!

Hi,
I have a DB which has its collation set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and i need to change it to Latin1_General_CI_AS,
does anyone have any idea how to do this?
i have tried right clicking on the DB and changing its collation in the options tab, but this only changes what the default is, so all the old columns still have the old collatin,
does anyone know how to change this?

Hello...
When I migrated data from one SQL Server to another I got collection problems because collation of the target server was different from the source one.
The best solution I thought about was to change collation of the database in target server to be equal to the server collation so that when a temporary table is created, and the collation used would be the server collation, no error would occur. All sounds logic, but, after I ran ALTER DATABASE command and changed the collation of the database, I verified that all varchar fields of all database tables retained the old collation, not the new database collation I set.
Is there any way to change the collation of all fields at once when I change the database collation?
Thanks for your help
Jaime

And my database 'DB1' , 'DB2' has collation set to Japanese unicode.
My sql team has informed they cannot change system collation as it hosts other db's as well.
My Query: What will be the impact of changing collation from JP to Latin.

Can the collation used by SSIS be changed or influenced during install or run time? We have found that our databases, that use a mandatory "LATIN1_GENERAL_BIN", have incorrect SSIS Merge Join output. Changing our database collation in testing didn't make a difference. What matters is the data. Which Windows collation is SSIS using?
Example Data:
FIRSTNAME
FIRSTNAME
FIRSTS-A-NAME
FIRSTS_A_NAME
FIRST_NAME
FIRST_NAME
FIRSTname
FIRSTname
FIRS_NAME
put in a Sort task before the Merge Join task as setting advanced properties isn't enough (as described by Eric Johnson here --> [URL] ......
We are using 64-bit SQL Server 2008 R2 w/ SP1 in Windows Server 2008 R2 ENT w/ SP1.
UPDATE from ETL team: Explicitly ordering the source with "COLLATE Latin1_General_CS_AS" seems to have the same effect as using a separate sort task. We don't feel that we can rely on our findings, however, unless we have documentation that this collation is what is behind SSIS.

Hi there,
We currently install some of client's databases on SQL Server 2000 with the collation set to Latin1_General_BIN but we have one client that was installed and now running on SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and I was wondering if we can change the collation on the database to Latin1_General_BIN?
Would this have any adverse affects on the DB or the data within it? Our strings are nvarchar.
Thanks for your help

I support an applicatoin where the vendor requires the use of the LATIN_1_GENERAL_BIN sort collation in their user databases. Origionally, when I installed the instance, I did not select this sort collation for the instance. I have since gone back and reinstalled SQL Server with the correct sort collation. After that, I restored the vendors databases from backups I took prior to reinstalling the instnace and they retained the LATIN_1_GENERAL_BIN collation (the correct one).
I also restored the MSDB database to get all of my jobs back. When I did this, MSDB took the old sort collation (SQL_LATIN_1_GENERAL_CPI_CI_AS). MSDB is the only database that has this collation and I'm getting errors in the agent log complaining of collation conflicts. I'm pretty sure the fact that the MSDB sort collation is different that all the other databases is the thing that's causing these error messages.
My question is this: Is there any way to change the sort collation of MSDB without reinstalling SQL server? This is a clustered environment and everytime I've reloaded SQL, it's been cumbersome and taken me at least 1 day's work.
Also, I know there's a rebuild master utility that will rebuild master, model and MSDB, but when I tried that last time it failed and I had to reinstall SQL anyway. Does anyone know of a way around this or have any tips on using the rebuildmaster utility in a clustered environment?
Many thanks,

I am trying to change the name collation of a SQL database as an update script I am running needs the main collation to be SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
I have tried going into Properties and options then changing the collation type but I get this error
"The Database could not be exclusively locked to perform the operation. ALTER DATABASE failed. The default collation of database 'nutri93' cannot be set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS."
I have tried SQL scripts that I have found to take the database into a single user mode but still get the same errror.
Usually its this Database nutri93 could not be locked exclusively
How I can change the collation type? Currently the only option seems to be a complete hard install of SQL Management Studio

I currently have a server with the collation set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.
However, some of the databases within the server are set to Latin1_General_BIN, probably because they were restored from another server some time ago. Also, even within the databases that have Latin1_General_BIN, some of the columns are set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, very confusing to say the least.
What i would like to do is change the database collation settings for these databases to match the server setting. I would also like to change all of the tables within these databases to have the columns also set to the server collation settings.
I'm looking for the steps that i would need to take to make sure i don't mess anything up as these databases have there own sets of views and sp's that run each day.

Will it be the same default as for the'typical' installation? Thanks

I'm importing data from a table on one database into a table in another database on the same instance. The FROM database is collated as "Latin1_General_CI_AS" and the TO database is collated as "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS".
When I then try joining on a common nvarchar column between the 2 tables, I get this error:
Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" and "Latin1_General_CI_AS" in the equal to operation.
Is there a way to change the collation of the incoming data as I'm inserting it into the TO table?

After reading some comments here I decided to look at tables to see if any had a clustered index that was a unique identifier. Yep. So if I have a table with a unique identifier as the primary key/clustered index and an identity column that is indexed, I would like to make the identity a clustered index (maybe even the primary key) and make the unique identifier a unique non-clustered index (not the primary key).
Does this sound reasonable? If I do this will I need to drop and recreate the other indexes? Or maybe just rebuild the other indexes?
Currently:
CREATE TABLE Payments (
IDX INT IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
GUID UNIQUEIDENTIFIER NOT NULL DEFAULT(NEWID()),
.....
-- many other columns
);
GO
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[PAYMENTS] ADD CONSTRAINT [PK_PAYMENTS_GID] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([GUID] ASC);
GO
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_Payments_ID] ON [dbo].[PAYMENTS] ([IDX] ASC);
GO
Would like:
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[PAYMENTS] ADD CONSTRAINT [PK_PAYMENTS_IDX] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (IDX ASC);
GO
CREATE UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_Payments_GUID] ON [dbo].[PAYMENTS] (GUID ASC);
GO

Is it possible to set in the transaction level for some queries or do we need to change entire database isolation level by using alter database "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2008R2 SET READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON"

I have a merge replication. Currently works fine. Publisher & Distributor are on the same server. I need to change the location of the alternate folder for the snapshot files.
I’ll probably just change it through the GUI, but would I use sp_changedistpublisher or sp_changemergepublication if I were scripting everything?
My real concern is the subscribers. Do I have to ‘tell’ the subscribers where the alt folder has been changed to? Do I just run sp_changemergepullsubscription on the subscribers?

I have opened up a port on a remote SQL instance and can see that the port is LISTENING when using the PortQry tool. I have also set the TCP port in the TCP/IP properties in the IPAll section for that instance, yet I am unable to connect and get an error of
Connection Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed while attempting to consume the pre-login handshake acknowledgement. This could be because the pre-login handshake failed or the server was unable to respond back in time. The duration spent while attempting to connect to this server was - [Pre-Login] initialization=1; handshake=14998; (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I have done this on other instances, although they were default instances, and it has always worked fine.

I have 2 SQL server installs for 2008 R2 configured as multi instances. I have a product called Esri ArcMap 10.3 that can be used to generate a database. When I run the wizard against one installation, the wizard successfully creates the database. When I then run the same against the other installation it fails with the following error [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Invalid cursor state
I've attempted to look at the configuration of each using
select *
from master.sys.configurations
From this I found several differences
Successful Mulit instance
Optimize for Ad hoc Workloads – False
Max Degree of Parallelism - 0
UnSuccessful Multi instance
Optimize for Ad hoc Workloads – True
Max Degree of Parallelism - 4
I attempted to co-ordinate the differences running the wizard for each iteration but it always failed with the same error above. The error always seems to occur when a particular store procedure is run. There are quite a number of scripts run prior to this and are technically under the covers and only discovered via tracing, in this case using SQL Profiler. I don't have access to individual scripts that I can run incrementally to replicate the issue. I have to rely only on the Esri Wizard.
Reviewing the error against several forums suggests that this is an ODBC error but the trace I ran using SQL Profiler finds that the driver used is Native.
My question then is "What are the conditions that would cause this error above (Invalid Cursor)?" "Is there other configuration settings that are not captured via the SQL identified above?" "Could this be caused by mapped drives for data, Logs and Temp?"

im trying to measure the amount of CPU used in a backup and restore, using the SQL Server Databases: Backup Restore counter in Perfmon.
I can select The counter, but it does not let me select an instance database to monitor.
see image:
I have 3 instances on my machine, 2 sql 2005 and 1 sql 2008. why do these instances not appear? i dont know how to set up this monitoring.
if i type LOCALHOST or 127.0.0.1 in the "Select counters from computer" text box i can see all databases under my sql 2005 instances, but not the ones under the 2008 instances. I have disabled all sql server 2005 services and can confirm none of the sql 2008 instance databases are showing up.
this is a huge problem, especially for when i start stress testing sql server 2008 in preperation for upgrading.
anyone any ideas on why i cannot see sql server 2008 instances in perfmon? I have tried from a remote pc also with the same results.

I have some huge tables (think 200+GB for a single table) which are excellent candidates for sparse columns. The tables have many columns which are defined with decimal datatypes (13,2) with a large percentage of them (over 50% in most cases- some as much as 99%) being 0.00. Since this is very expensive in terms of storage my idea is to set all the 0.00 values equal to NULL then set them as sparse. Across 100 or so identical databases, I have 5 such tables, with 20-40 columns in each table.
1.) three steps for each column in each table in each db.
Step 1: update table to allow for nulls
Step 2: update tabe set column=null where column =0.00
Step 3 update table set sparse columns
2.)
Step 1: Create entirely new table with sparse column definitions
Step 2: copy entire table, transforming 0.00 to null for affected columns via SSIS
Step 3: drop original table, rename new table to original name

This is probably easy for some who have done it, but I have an installed Instance of SQL Server 2008 Express or SQL Server 2008 R2 Express I'll call Instance CCC and need to remove it. I have two other Express instances I'll call Instance AAA and Instance BBB. I want to uninstall Instance CCC without affecting the other two instances or the software that uses them. Instance CCC should have been installed as a SQL Server 2012 Express instance, so I need to remove the 2008 Instance of CCC and reinstall it as 2012. In all cases, I'm talking about SQL Server Express. Full SQL Server is not installed.
The Instances are all installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard server.
I have read that I can do this through Control Panel > Programs and Features, but that I can corrupt or mess up the other instances (AAA and BBB) if I don't do it right. I'm uneasy about this, not having done it before, and do not want to affect the users of the AAA and BBB instances!
