SQL Server 2008 :: Converting Datatype Of A Computed Column?
Mar 10, 2015
I have a computed column that I want to cast as decimal.
The two columns it calculates from are both varchar.
Why can I cast the column as INT, but when I try to cast as decimal, I get the following error?
Arithmetic overflow error converting varchar to data type numeric.
what this error means and why I get it only when I want to cast to decimal.

I'm trying to write a query that will display the formula for a computed column in SQL Server 2008R2.
I have looked here: [URL] ....
and it say (at least I think) that I can look at the Formula property of COLUMNPROPERTY like this:
SELECT COLUMN_NAME ,
COLUMNPROPERTY(OBJECT_ID(TABLE_NAME),COLUMN_NAME,'IsComputed'),
COLUMNPROPERTY(OBJECT_ID(TABLE_NAME),COLUMN_NAME,'Formula'),
COLUMNPROPERTY(OBJECT_ID(TABLE_NAME),COLUMN_NAME,'IsDeterministic')
FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS
WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'Event' AND COLUMN_NAME = 'CurrentAttendance'
I know the column is computed and I can see the formula in SSMS. I wanted to do this in T-SQL. How to get this value?

I ran a db update script to update the datatype for a column from a tinyint to a smallint:
ALTER TABLE MyTable
ALTER COLUMN Age smallint
Then I ran another db update script to update the value in these 2 columns:
update MyTable
set Age = Age * 12,
However, the second db update script returns the following error:
Msg 220, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Arithmetic overflow error for data type tinyint, value = 1440.
The statement has been terminated.
SSMS shows the column with the new data type of smallint. I even restarted SSMS but I still get the error above. 1440 is out of range for a tiny int but should be in range for a smallint. Both scripts need to be executed together in sequence by the release manager.

Hi all,
I have a table with 3 computed columns, the first two reference a function for there value. The last computed column should be total of the other computed columns, however when trying to write the formula for this column SQL Server rejects it.
Am i correct in thinking it is not possible to reference other computed columns in a computed column's forumla.
My current work around is to call the functions again that the other computed columns use to generate the total, though this seems to me like a performance issue.
Could anyone offer some advise on my situation.
Any input apreciated.

HI,I have a table with IDENTITY column with the datatype as INTEGER. Nowthis table record count is almost reaching its limt. that is totalrecord count is almost near to 2^31-1. It will reach the limit with inanother one or two months. In order to avoid the arithmentic overflow error 8115, we would likechange the datatype from INT to BIGINT. we hope this will solve ourproblem. How do I approch this datatype conversion?. Since the data count ishuge, that leads to a long down time of database.we need better approach or solution for this problem?. kindly give mea better solution that will reduce the total downtime of the productiondatabase.?.Regards

I am building a table change log that will track each attribute update and include the original and new values.
[BatchYearMonthKey] [int] NULL,
[BatchYearMonthDayKey] [int] NULL,
[AccountID] [varchar](200) NULL,
[Attribute] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[Old_ValueAtrDefault] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[New_ValueAtrDefault] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[Old_ValueAtrLong] [varchar] (max) NULL,
[New_ValueAtrLong] [varchar] (max) NULL
The challenge that the spectrum of varchar lengths across the table. I have one attribute that requires varchar(max) and all other attributes (about 40) are varchar (200).
I am trying to accomplish the following:
Account ID Status
1 Enabled
Now changed to
AccountID Status
1 Disabled
My log table will look like the following:
[BatchYearMonthKey] BatchYearMonthDayKey] [AccountID] [Attribute] [Old_ValueAtrDefault] [New_ValueAtrDefault] [Old_ValueAtrLong] [New_ValueAtrLong]
201504 20150409 1 Status Enabled Disabled NULL NULL
My question:
I created two fields (Old_ValueAtrLong and New_ValueAtrLong) dedicated for the one attribute that is a varchar (max). I was trying to avoid storing [Status] for example that's a varchar(200) in a field that is varchar(max). Is this the right approach? Or are there other recommendations in how to handle storing the data in the most efficient manner?

I have a date field stored in a character type field ( this field is a spare one in an ERP package )I am trying to validate and convert to a date format using the following;
[code="CASE WHEN isdate( arc.UserField1 )= 1 then
CAST( arc.UserField1 as DateTime )
ELSE
CAST( '01/01/1900' as Datetime )
END"] [/code]
The results are ;
Date Result
29/09/08 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000
09/06/15 2015-09-06 00:00:00.000
18/03/13 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000
09/10/14 2014-09-10 00:00:00.000
as you can see - the date 29/09/08 is a valid UK date format - however it fails the validation. 09/06/15 converts to 6th September 2015 ( mm/dd/yy ) format...What do I need to do to force this to identify as dd/mm/yy date format ?

I have been trying to convert an existing table that used adjacency list model (parentid, childid) to a table that use hierarchy Id type. So early on, I notice my original data does contains multiple roots. So I took a step to create dummy nodes to ensure all nodes fall into a single root structure. Another important fact is that each child node can have multiple parents.
My original source table contains 22461 records, when running the query below step 2 produces explosive number of records around 175,000+ records. I spent hours study the result and couldn't understand what actually causing this, I ran it against small set of test data I didn't seem the issue caused by child with multiple parents.
select * from SourceTable -- produces 22461 records
--step 1: first, get row number of child records in each parent
SELECT ChildID,ParentID, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY PARENTID ORDER BY PARENTID) as Num
INTO #RelationshipTmp
FROM SourceTable;

A SQL Server 2005 db has three date related-columns (MonthGiven,
DayGiven, YearGiven) each as smallint datatype. I would like to
create a DocDate column (datetime datatype) that combines the data from
the three existing date-related columns. I have tried casting and
simple concatentation without success. ALTER TABLE Details ADD DocDate DateTime NULL
UPDATE Details SET DocDate = CAST(MonthGiven AS DateTime)+ '/' + CAST(DayGiven AS DateTime) + "/" Cast(YearGiven As DateTime)
I think I need to be doing a Conversion instead of casting but
have been unable to implement info I have found in the SQL Server
Developer Center in my situation.
