SQL Server 2008 :: Delete Before Insert Trigger Statement

Apr 6, 2015

What statement do I use, as part of an insert trigger, to insert xml data from the xml database to a flat file database, to check if a record with a specific ID exists to delete first then insert the changed record, instead of adding the changes or an updated from the original xml database.

What I’m trying to do is take the xml formatted data out of one sql server database and insert the data only in that xml into a another sql database. So I can play with the data.

Problem is if the data in the xml is updated or changed for a specific record on the original xml database then the trigger inserts another copy into the created database (which I don’t want).

This is on SQL Server 2008R2.

SQL Server 2008 :: Why CDC Returning Insert / Delete When UPDATE A Row In Table

Mar 15, 2013

I am experimenting with using CDC to track user changes in our application database. So far I've done the following:

-- ENABLE CDC ON DV_WRP_TEST
USE dv_wrp_test
GO
EXEC sys.sp_cdc_enable_db
GO

-- ENABLE CDC TRACKING ON THE AVA TABLE IN DV_WRP_TEST
USE dv_wrp_test

[Code] ....

The results shown above are what I expect to see. My problem occurs when I use our application to update the same column in the same table. The vb.net application passes a Table Valued Parameter to a stored procedure which updates the table. Below is the creation script for the stored proc:

SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO

if exists (select * from sysobjects where id = object_id('dbo.spdv_AVAUpdate') and sysstat & 0xf = 4)
drop procedure dbo.spdv_AVAUpdate

[Code] ....

When I look at the results of CDC, instead of operations 3 and 4, I see 1 (DELETE) and 2 (INSERT) for the change that was initiated from the stored procedure:

-- GET CDC RESULTS FOR CHANGES TO AVA TABLE
USE dv_wrp_test
GO
SELECT *
FROM cdc.dbo_AVA_CT
GO

--RESULTS SHOW OPERATION 1 (DELETE) AND 2 (INSERT) INSTEAD OF 3 AND 4
--__$start_lsn__$end_lsn__$seqval__$operation__$update_maskAvaKeyAvaDescAvaArrKeyAvaSAPAppellationID
--0x0031E84F000000740008NULL0x0031E84F00000074000230x02119Test26NULL
--0x0031E84F000000740008NULL0x0031E84F00000074000240x02119Test36NULL
--0x0031E84F00000098000ANULL0x0031E84F00000098000310x0F119Test36NULL
--0x0031E84F00000098000ANULL0x0031E84F00000098000420x0F119Test46NULL

Why this might be happening, and if so, what can be done to correct it? Also, is there any way to get the user id associated with the CDC?

SQL Server 2008 :: Insert Trigger For Import Wizard

Mar 11, 2015

I have created an insert trigger to update an address column with a default when it is null, for different clients using a case statement.

When I import data using the import wizard, the trigger doesn't fire.

Doesn't SQL see an import as an insert?

How can I get this trigger to fire for an import?

SQL Server 2008 :: Trigger Fire On Each Inserted Row To Insert Same Record Into Remote Table

Sep 9, 2015

I have two different SQL 2008 servers, I don't have permission to create a linked server in any of them. i created a trigger on server1.table1 to insert the same record to the remote server server2.table1 using OPENROWSET

i created a stored procedure to insert this record, and i have no issue when i execute the stored procedure. it insert the recored into the remote server.

The problem is when i call the stored procedure from trigger, i get an error message.

Stored Procedure:
USE [DB1]
GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

[Code] ....

When i try to insert a new description value in the table i got the following error message:

No row was updated
the data in row 1 was not committed
Error source .Net SqlClient Data provider.
Error Message: the operation could not be performed because OLE DB
provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "(null)" returned message "The partner transaction manager has disabled its support for remote/network transaction.".

Interaction Between Instead Of Insert Trigger And Output Clause Of Insert Statement

Jan 14, 2008

This problem is being seen on SQL 2005 SP2 + cumulative update 4

I am currently successfully using the output clause of an insert statement to return the identity values for inserted rows into a table variable

I now need to add an "instead of insert" trigger to the table that is the subject of the insert.

As soon as I add the "instead of insert" trigger, the output clause on the insert statement does not return any data - although the insert completes successfully. As a result I am not able to obtain the identities of the inserted rows

Note that @@identity would return the correct value in the test repro below - but this is not a viable option as the table in question will be merge replicated and @@identity will return the identity value of a replication metadata table rather than the identity of the row inserted into my_table

Note also that in the test repro, the "instead of insert" trigger actually does nothing apart from the default insert, but the real world trigger has additional code.

To run the repro below - select each of the sections below in turn and execute them
1) Create the table
2) Create the trigger
3) Do the insert - note that table variable contains a row with column value zero - it should contain the @@identity value
4) Drop the trigger
5) Re-run the insert from 3) - note that table variable is now correctly populated with the @@identity value in the row

I need the behaviour to be correct when the trigger is present

Any thoughts would be much appreciated

Insert/Delete Trigger Misfires

Jan 6, 2006

I am having problems with a trigger that is designed to audit changes to a particular field in a table. If that field is updated, then the old record is inserted into an audit table.

This trigger never fails when I run test data against it from Query Analyzer. It works some of the time when the web application updates it, fails other times.

Typically, multiple records are updated at the same time. Any ideas?

Here is the Trigger:

create trigger t_u_product_rate_detail
on product_rate_detail
for insert, update, delete

as

/--Local variable
declare
@auditdate datetime,
@audituser sysname

--Set values so function isn't executed a bunch of times
select
@auditdate = getdate(),
@audituser = suser_sname()

if exists (select * from inserted)
begin
if exists (select * from deleted)
begin
insert into product_rate_detail_audit_log
select d.product_rate_detail_id,
d.product_rate_id,
d.day_of_week_id,
d.ad_size_id,
d.rate,
d.plan_vol,
d.plan_freq,
@auditdate, @audituser, 'U'
from deleted d
join inserted i on i.product_rate_detail_id = d.product_Rate_detail_id
where (d.rate <> 0 and d.rate is not null)
and i.rate <> d.rate -- this determines if the rate has changed.
end
end

GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF
GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO

Using Trigger/Stored Procedure (Delete, Insert)?

In the same vain, If I have a input form which ask the user to enter their First Name and Last Name and Department, i would like to add those records in TableA for First and Last Name, TableB for the Department.  Once again, how do I create a Trigger that if I insert a record in Table A to also insert the information for Department in Table B, if its successful in my stored procedure.  Hope that made sense.Thanks.

CLR Trigger -&&> Send Insert/Update/Delete Message To Windows Service

Feb 1, 2007

Hi,

I have an c# windows service, which is running on the same machine where my mssql server is installed. This service must be informed for each insert/update/delete event on one specific table.

My idea was to create an CLR Trigger for this table which can communicate with this service via .NET remoting. But the problem is, that the system.runtime.remoting assembly is not integrated within the mssql clr enviroment => i can't use remoting.

Are there any other idea's how can i solve this?

Trigger For INSERT --&&> SELECT Statement

Nov 15, 2007

Hello,

I have a trigger on a table named Store. The trigger updates the longitude and latitude on store based on the zip. Simple right? Well, I'm trying to import data and of course the trigger is not updating the data as triggers are not on a row by row basis with multi row inserts.

Here is the error message I'm receiving:

Msg 512, Level 16, State 1, Procedure SetLongLat, Line 17

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

How would one go about resolving this issue? I've includes my snippets below:

Trigger:

Code Block
ALTER TRIGGER [dbo].[SetLongLat]
ON [dbo].[Store]
FOR INSERT, UPDATE
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;

DECLARE @Long float
DECLARE @Lat float

SELECT @Long = LONGITUDE, @Lat = LATITUDE
FROM Zipcode..ZipcodeLite
WHERE ZIP_CODE = (SELECT Zip FROM Inserted)

UPDATE Store SET Longitude = @Long, Latitude = @Lat
FROM Store INNER JOIN Inserted ON Store.Id = Inserted.Id

IF UPDATE(Zip)

BEGIN

UPDATE Store SET Longitude = @Long, Latitude = @Lat
FROM Store INNER JOIN Inserted ON Store.Id = Inserted.Id
END

END

Thanks for your help!

Delete Trigger In SQL Server 7

Jul 20, 2005

Have gone through BOL and Google, but can't find the answer... please helpwith a simple Q. I'm trying to create a simple cascade delete trigger in SQLServer 7 where deleting "parent" records in table X delete correspondingchild records in table Y.Table X=========X_IDSOME_VALTable Y=========Y_IDX_IDSOME_VALWhen there is no relationship between X.X_ID and Y.X_ID, the followingtrigger works fine:CREATE TRIGGER "temp" ON xFOR DELETEASdeletefrom ywhere x_id in (select x_id from deleted)However, when a relationship is created to enforce referential integrity, the trigger fails, with a "DELETE statement conflicted with COLUMN REFERENCEconstraint" error. I've seen examples where the trigger says (for example)"AFTER INSERT", where presumably the code is specifically run after theevent that triggers it -- is there a way of forcing the trigger to runbefore the delete from table X is executed? I've tried using "BEFOREDELETE", but no dice :-Thanks!--Aidan Whitehall <aidanwhitehall@fairbanks.co.uk>Macromedia ColdFusion DeveloperFairbanks Environmental Ltd +44 (0)1695 51775

SQL - Cascading Delete, Or Delete Trigger, Maintaining Referential Integrity - PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Nov 13, 2006

I am having great difficulty with cascading deletes, delete triggers and referential integrity.

The database is in First Normal Form.

I have some tables that are child tables with two foreign keyes to two different parent tables, for example:

Table A
/
Table B Table C
/
Table D

So if I try to turn on cascading deletes for A/B, A/C, B/D and C/D relationships, I get an error that I cannot have cascading delete because it would create multiple cascade paths. I do understand why this is happening. If I delete a row in Table A, I want it to delete child rows in Table B and table C, and then child rows in table D as well. But if I delete a row in Table C, I want it to delete child rows in Table D, and if I delete a row in Table B, I want it to also delete child rows in Table D.

SQL sees this as cyclical, because if I delete a row in table A, both table B and table C would try to delete their child rows in table D.

Ok, so I thought, no biggie, I'll just use delete triggers. So I created delete triggers that will delete child rows in table B and table C when deleting a row in table A. Then I created triggers in both Table B and Table C that would delete child rows in Table D.

When I try to delete a row in table A, B or C, I get the error "Delete Statement Conflicted with COLUMN REFERENCE". This does not make sense to me, can anyone explain? I have a trigger in place that should be deleting the child rows before it attempts to delete the parent row...isn't that the whole point of delete triggers?????

This is an example of my delete trigger:

CREATE TRIGGER [DeleteA] ON A
FOR DELETE
AS
Delete from B where MeetingID = ID;
Delete from C where MeetingID = ID;

And then Table B and C both have delete triggers to delete child rows in table D. But it never gets to that point, none of the triggers execute because the above error happens first.

So if I then go into the relationships, and deselect the option for "Enforce relationship for INSERTs and UPDATEs" these triggers all work just fine. Only problem is that now I have no referential integrity and I can simply create unrestrained child rows that do not reference actual foreign keys in the parent table.

So the question is, how do I maintain referential integrity and also have the database delete child rows, keeping in mind that the cascading deletes will not work because of the multiple cascade paths (which are certainly required).

Hope this makes sense...
Thanks,
Josh

SQL Server 2008 :: MERGE And Delete From Target

Mar 12, 2015

I'm not even sure this is possible but I'm using MERGE in a process that has 3 source tables (the process steps through each source table sequentially) and I need to delete from the Target database occasionally.

My current code is

sqlMerge = "MERGE " + TableName + " AS target USING @CData AS source" +
" ON target.TotRsp = source.TotRsp AND target.ClientRef = source.ClientRef AND target.dbPatID = source.dbPatID" +
" WHEN MATCHED THEN" +
" UPDATE SET dbPatFirstName = source.dbPatFirstName, dbPatLastName = source.dbPatLastName,

[Code] ....

The Target db data is made up from several different clients and when the MERGE runs it uses TotRsp, ClientRef and dbPatID to uniquely match a source row to the target row and if no match it inserts the source row.

My problem is that when this runs with Source A first, it will delete all merged data from Source B & C. Then when Source B runs it will insert all Source B data but delete all from A & C and so on.

Is there way that that I can include additional clauses into NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN so it knows only to delete when data has come from say Source A. Once the data is in the target table there is no reference to which source table it came from tho.

If there isn't a solution I suppose I could always add an extra column to the target db to indicate which source it came from and then have something like

NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE AND t.Source = 'SourceA'.

That's quite a bit of work my end to do that tho so I'd like to be sure it works.

The purpose of the trigger is to insert a sister record in a table whenever a new record shown in the view. Here's the catch, the table that the trigger is supposed to insert into is not a base table within the view and the view is not an updatable view. My question is... Do INSTEAD OF triggers only affect the base table(s) within the view and does the view itself have to be an updatable view?
