SQL Server 2008 :: Get Max Of Group No Matter Currency

Aug 5, 2015

I have this data below :

isin | market | ccy| stock_mkt | max(a.year) | max(a.month ) | max(a. day)

DEX | XFFA | DEM | 013 | 2009 | 5 | 8
DEX | XFFA | EUR | 013 | 2014 | 11 | 25

get this data by running the following query :

select b.isin, a.market, a.ccy, a.stock_mkt, max(a.year)
,max(a.month), max(a.day) from market_table a inner join
isin_table b on a.id = b.id where a.isin_closing_date=0
and a.market in ('XFFA', 'XFFA') and
b.isin_type= 'I' and b.isin = 'DEX' group by b.isin,
a.market, a.ccy, a.stock_mkt

what's needed is to get the earliest record all times, no mater the currency :

isin | market | ccy| stock_mkt | max(a.year) | max(a.month ) | max(a. day)
DEX | XFFA | EUR | 013 | 2014 | 11 | 25

SQL Server 2008 :: Using Expression In GROUP BY Clause

Feb 23, 2015

I am working to move an application from MySQL to SQL Server. The person who developed the MySQL application has little database experience, and took some shortcuts that the lax nature of MySQL allows. One query with which I am struggling looks something like this:

SELECT StartTime + Offset, min(Sensor), max(Sensor)
FROM SensorData
WHERE SensorID = @SensorID AND
StartTime + Offset > @BeginTime AND
StartTime + Offset < @EndTime
GROUP BY (StartTime + Offset) / 100
ORDER BY StartTime + Offset

What we are trying to accomplish is to return minimum and maximum sensor values over a number of periods between the BeginTime and EndTime. When I run this query in MySQL on a sample dataset, it returns a small number of rows, with each one being the min/max values for a portion of the overall period.

Under MS SQL Server 2008, SP3, I get the two following error messages:
Column 'SensorData.StartTime' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause.
Column 'SensorData.Offset' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause.

SQL Server 2008 :: Moving Tables To New File Group

Mar 16, 2015

I'm presented with an issue where by I need to reclaim a fair bit of unused space currently sat in the primary data file for my database. I don't want to run DBCC SHRINKDATABASE as we all know this could potentially have a some serious negative effects relating to index fragmentation.

So, how do I get the free space out of the data file? - I've decided to:

1. Add new new file group
2. Add a clustered index for all tables on the new file group
3. Shrink the primary file group as much as possible (hopefully giving me the free space back)
4. Drop the newly created clustered indexes for all tables

There are no clustered indexes currently for any of the tables!, so me temporarily creating/dropping one shouldn't be an issue. Are there any other ways I can get the free space back to the OS?

SQL Server 2008 :: Check Constraint On Group Of Records?

May 25, 2015

I have groups of records in a table, and I would like to set a necessary condition on each group. The condition is that EXACTLY ONE of the records in each group has a flag field set to True (bit = 1). I can naturally write triggers for update, insert and delete events that test for such a condition.

Something along the lines of this condition:

(select count(ClovekAutoID)
from TableOfClovekNames tCN
where JeHlavni = 1
group by ClovekAutoID
having COUNT(JeHlavni ) > 1) = 1In fact,

I tried this just on whim, but naturally, the SS engine told me to go roll my hoop, that subqueries are not allowed in constraint expressions.

I want to fetch below 3 records from the above scenario i.e. latest record of each amount (Latest is determined using "descr" column i.e. 4 is greater then 3 -

+------+--------+----------------------------+-------+

+------+--------+-----------------------------+-----+

But in case of same amounts I am unable to fetch the latest status as even using partitioning will treat them as one.

ASP, SQL Server And Currency Datatype...

May 13, 2005

Hi,

I've just created an ecommerce website using ASP and SQL Server 2000 - on my development machine (WinXP Pro, IIS, SQL Server 2000) the SQL Server datatype for the price field is Money - however, the datatype on my hosts SQL Server is Currency (there is no Money datatype available??)

Now, the problem is this: on my local machine I enter a price of say 99.99 - this shows up on the front-end & in the admin area as 99.99, no problem. Now, on the live server when I enter 99.99 it is somehow converted to 9999 - if I enter 99,99 (with a comma) it shows correctly as 99.99 - however, when I go to edit the price it reverts to 9999...does anyone know what is going on here? Why is it converting 99.99 to 9999??

Please let me know if you need more clarification of the above.

Many thanks,

Peter

Transact SQL :: How To Transfer Tables From One To Another File Group In 2008

Jan 17, 2012

I have few issues regarding the transfer of the tables from one file group to another file group  in SQL 2008 and also How can we  backup and restore the particular database based on file group level.

Let’s say I have a tables stored within the different FG. such as

Tables

File group Dimension tables             Primary Fact tables
FG1 ...
FG2…
zzz_tables                                                DEFAULT_FG
dim.table1                                                                                                                          DEFAULT_FG
dim.table2                                                                                                                          DEFAULT_FG
…                                                                                                                                             ….

Here all I want to transfer the dim.table1 ,dim.table2  from  DEFAULT_FG to the Primary File group .So is there simple methods for transfer the dim.table1,2  from one FG to another .I have tried somewhat but I couldn’t get the exact way.Secondly after moving those dim.table1 ,dim.table2 from DEFAULT_FG to Primary ,All I want to backup and restore the database only containing  the Primary and FG1,FG2… not a DEFAULT_FG.Is it possible or not.?

Does Size Really Matter?

Mar 6, 2001

Morning Folks,

I'm setting up SQL Server 7.0 as follows:
12 Gb initial data load;
heavy transaction OLTP;
4 processors;
RAID5
disk space NOT an issue.

I'm trying to figure out what a reasonable initial size for both the Transaction Log and
Tempdb should be. I was thinking 100Mb for each. Is this reasonable, or could either afford
to have more?

Is there a percentage of the .mdf that is recognized as a general rule of thumb for setting up
the Transaction Log and/or Tempdb?

Also, is there any value in assigning Filegroups in a RAID5 setup?

Thanks,
Sergio

Does It Matter If The Criteria Is In The FROM Or The WHERE?

May 6, 2008

I have a query that searches through a 4 million record table. The data is fed from the UNIX flat file systems so the data is not in optimal search format. So I created some views that massaged the data and then index them. I select and join the original table with the view, with NOEXPAND hint on the view. My question is this theory right: If I put the criteria in the FROM join part then it will make the join easier than if I put it in the where clause?

Example (any difference)
SELECT stuff1, stuff2 FROM UglyData u INNER JOIN MassageTable m ON m.RecNumber LIKE '112%' AND u.ID = m.ID
versus
SELECT stuff1, stuff2 FROM UglyData u INNER JOIN MassageTable m ON u.ID = m.ID WHERE m.RecNumber LIKE '112%'

THANKS!!!

Does Column Order Really Matter?

Does column order really matter for Query Optimizer to pick index.Case 1: Say my CUSTOMER table has one composite index containing FirstName and LastName. FirstName exists prior than LastName. Does the column, FirstName and LastName, order matter to have Query Optimizer to utilize the index when I write WHERE clause in a SELECT statement?Statement 1:SELECT * FROM CUSTOMER WHERE FirstName = 'John' and LastName ='Smith'Statement 2:SELECT * FROM CUSTOMER WHERE LastName ='Smith' and FirstName = 'John' Will both statement 1 and 2 use the composite index or only statement 1?Case 2:Say my CUSTOMER has two single-column indexes. One index is on column FirstName. Another is on column LastName. For statement 1 and 2 above, which index will be picked by Query Optimizer or both? How does QO pick for index?I read couple book and some books say column order matter but some say no. Which one should I go with?  I'm kind of confused.

Table Design Question - Subject Matter Expert Database

Aug 8, 2007

I would like to create a database that keeps track of our companies subject matter experts. I have roughed out some of the tables. I would appreciate any feedback on if this is the right approach and if there might be any issues when I start writting a front-end (probably VB 2005).

What makes this interesting (at least for me) is that a subject has an owner and at least 1 "expert", possibly up to 3. Here is what I am thinking for tables:

tblEmployee

EmployeeID (PK)
LastName
FirstName
etc......
tblSubject

SubjectID (PK)
Description
tblOwner

SubjectID (FK)
EmployeeID (FK)
tblExpert1

SubjectID (FK)
EmployeeID (FK)
tblExpert2

SubjectID (FK)
EmployeeID (FK)
tblExpert3

SubjectID (FK)
EmployeeID (FK)

Does this make sense? Would I run into any issues when trying to display this on a form in VB?

Thanks in advance for any help!!!!!

Seeking Advice: SQL Server On Win 2008 Virtual Server Or Just Win 2008?

Apr 23, 2008

Hello - does anyone have experience w/SQL Server 2005 in a virtual environment? I'm considering this for a production environment but not sure if performance will suffer. Our databases will have a lot of writing but not too much reading. A SSRS solution is currently the only app. connecting to the SQL db. Max users to server at any given time will be very low (~10 users max). But the databases are pulling in data from other, outside multiple data sources on a daily basis.

Any pointers to documentation or any advice?

Problem With Windows Server 2008 And SQL 2008 Express

Feb 25, 2008

Hello!
Recently, I set up server with Windows Web Server 2008 RC1, SQL 2008 Express beta, .NET 3.5, IIS 7.
I'm running ASP.NET web application with SQL database. Everything works fine until the first application state on the server expires. After that, any postback that starts a new application state on the server and connects to the database, results in the following error:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
Is this a bug that will be fixed in release of Windows / SQL or am I doing something wrong?

Reporting Services :: Display Group Name Value Of Each Group In Column Header Outside The Group?

Sep 29, 2015

I have an SSRS 2012 table report with groups; each group is broken ie. one group for one page, and there are multiple groups in multiple pages.

'GroupName' column has multiple values - X,Y,Z,......

I need to group 'GroupName' with X,Y,Z,..... ie value X in page 1,value Y in page 2, value Z in page 3...

Now, I need to display another column (ABC) in this table report (outside the group column 'GroupName'); this outside column itself is another column header (not a group header) in the table (report) and it derives its name partly from the 'GroupName'  values:

Example:

Value X for GroupName in page 1 will mean, in page 1, column Name of ABC column must be ABC-X Value Y for GroupName in page 2 will mean, in page 2, column Name of ABC column must be ABC-Y Value Z for GroupName in page 3 will mean, in page 3, column Name of
ABC column must be ABC-Z

ie the column name of ABC (Clm ABC)  must be dynamic as per the GroupName values (X,Y,Z....)

Page1:

GroupName                 Clm ABC-X

X

Page2:

GroupName                 Clm ABC-Y

Y

Page3:

GroupName                 Clm ABC-Z

Z

I have been able to use First(ReportItems!GroupName.Value) in the Page Header to get GroupNames displayed in each page; I get X in page 1, Y in page 2, Z in page 3.....

However, when I use ReportItems (that refers to a group name) in the Report Body outside the group,

I get the following error:

Report item expressions can only refer to other report items within the same grouping scope or a containing grouping scope

I need to get the X, Y, Z ... in each page for the column ABC.

I have been able to use this - First(Fields!GroupName.Value); however, I get ABC-X, ABC-X, ABC-X in each of the pages for the ABC column, instead of ABC-X in page 1, ABC-Y in page 2, ABC-Z in page 3, ...
