Problem With Text Field: Text Input Too Long, Weird Characters

May 15, 2006

Hi,

Im a programmer for an university webportal which uses php and msssql.
When an user creates a new entry and his text is too long the entry is cut short and weird characters appear at the end of the entry.

For example:
http://www.ttz.uni-magdeburg.de/scripts/test-messedb/php/index.php?option=show_presse&funktion=presse_show_mitteilung&id=333

How can I set the text limit to unlimited?
Could it be something else?
Is there a way of splitting an entry to several text fields automatically?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me,
Chris

Long Text Field

Jun 6, 2008

 Hi

I
have a textbox field that take 2000 characters from user..Then I used a store
procedure to save that user input into database through an insert statement, but
for some reason it just never store the whole string of 2000 characters but only
store some of it (like 100 or something) .. Seems like a data type problem…(I  am using SQL server 2000)

This
is what I have defined:

---------------------------------------

In
storeprocedure:

@iidea2
varchar(2000)

How To Edit &<long Text&> Field

Jun 12, 2008

I know that similar items have been posted before but I have not found a solution to my issue by reading them.

I have a text field which holds amendment details and it cannot be updated through QA. I have 50 records which I have had to manually update through Enterprise Manager. I have been able to edit the amendment details field of 48 of these records. However for 2 records the amendment details field contains <long text> and as we all know, there does not seem to be an easy way to edit these.
Before I give up for good, does anyone have any suggestions?
Help much appreciated.

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Locate Archived Log Files

Jun 18, 2015

SQL SERVER 2008R2

The number of files to retain for SQL Server Logs is set to 99. When I expand the SQL Server Logs node in SQL Server Mgt Studio it shows the current log file through Archive#49. The oldest archive file is dated 2015/05/26. If I select that archive in SQL Server Mgt Studio it shows me the details and entries of that archive file. Yet when I go to the directory on SQL Server for the log files there are only the 5 most recent files. I have searched for '.trc' files on the entire drive and have found no other files.

How can SQL Server Mgt Studio show archive files that have no corresponding archive file in the directory that is supposed to contain the log files?

Forcing A Line Break In Long Text Field.

Mar 14, 2008

I have to output as one filed name, mailing address, and phone of each company that we do business with.
the out put must look as follows:
Company Name
Store number: #####
Street Address 1
Street Address 2
City, State Zip + 4
Phone: (###) ###-####

Each piece of data is a single field and will have to be concatenated into one.
How do I force the line breaks where I need them?

Also each piece of data will be compared to a €śsource€? for validity and I will need to mare the individual data pieces red where €śwrong€?. Like so:
VALID MY DATA
Company Name Company Name
Store number: ##### Store number: #####
Street Address 1 Street Address 1
Street Address 2 Street Address 2
City, State Zip + 4 City, State Zip + 4
Phone: (###) ###-#### Phone: (###) ###-####

Any ideas on how to do this? I have used IIF for conditional formating of field colors in the past, but my expierence is that it changes the WHOLE display field not just piece of data the IIF is wrapped around.

SQL Server 2008 :: Unable To Shrink Transaction Log - Could Not Locate Files

Jan 10, 2012

I am trying to reorganise the log files on a server, (long story short they are fragmented so I want to shrink and reset the initial size and growth) and I am unable to shrink them. When I run the following:

use test
DBCC SHRINKFILE(test_log, TRUNCATEONLY)
--or
use
DBCC SHRINKFILE(test_log,2, TRUNCATEONLY)

I get the following message:

Msg 8985, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Could not locate file 'test_log' for database 'test' in sys.database_files. The file either does not exist, or was dropped.

I get this message for every database on the server. I got the logical name of the file using sp_helpfile and have checked it against sys.masterfiles, sys.database_files and sys.sysaltfiles, all match up and confirm the name 'test_log'.

I rebooted the server last night and was able to shrink the first couple of .ldf's I tried so I presumed it was fixed. This morning when I try again i get the sanme error, I don't see anything in the SQL server or system logs that indicates a change.

I am able to add new log files and remove log files, however if I add a new log file (test_log2) and then try and truncate that file I get the same error.

Does SSRS Support Underlining Text (like A Web Address In A Sentence)?

I was recently told SSRS does not support the ability to underline a portion of text in a sentence. Does anyone know if this is true? Couldn't "text decoration" "underline" and "span" be used to underline the web address in the sample sentence below?

"Please visit our website at: www.abc.com"

Full-Text Catalogs, Where To Locate?

Dec 8, 2004

Hi All,

looking for some views about where to place these catalogs. The manual says they work more effiecntly on a different drive to the database, which is understandable.

I'm in the processes of designing a new database application which is to be avaiable via the internet, and extranet app. But as I'm planning to host the app and the main database on a shared server but to have the catalogs on another server held in house. The app will have search facilities as its main use. They will obviously be some performace issues, but is this a good idea?

Thanks for any comments..

SQL Server 2008 :: Updating Geography Column By Passing In Lat And Long For That Row

Apr 28, 2015

I have the following in my table. As you can see the Geo field is null (which is of type Geography), what I'm trying to do is populate that with an update statement by comparing the latitude and longitude for each row so I can then work out the distance, I've been following this tutorial to workout the distance which is giving me the desired results

[URL] ....

The issue I have is passing in the points i.e latitude and longitude and then updating the Geo field for the row, I currently have 11938 rows in my DB so I need to run this against all of them. I thought I had it I was thinking of update then select from the source but then I realized I need to pass the lat and long in for the points and that's where I got confused

SQL Server 2008 :: Store Long Values To Be Used In (IN) Statement In Separate Table?

Jul 14, 2015

I have several reports that are looking for a code within a certain set of codes or ranges. The specific list of codes to be including is determined by the end user. Currently my "IN" statement can be a hundred lines, listing several ranges, lists of specific codes, etc. I am constantly getting asked what codes does it include, is this code included, etc. Sometimes they'll give me a printed 10 page list of codes and want me to compare to what I have included in the report. Not ideal in the slightest.

What I'd like to do is have a table or a file of some kind somewhere where the end user can view the codes contained, add new ones, and delete ones they no longer want. Then I'd like to be able to just reference that file in my IN statement. Leaving the responsibility of listing the correct codes on them.

Access Memo Field To SQL Server Text Field

Nov 19, 2006

Hi,

I'm importing an Access database to SQL Server 2000.
The issue I ran into is pretty frustrating... All Memo fields that get copied over (as Text fields) appear to be fine and visible in SQL Server Enterprise Manager... except when I display them on the web via ASP - everything is blank (no content at all).

I didn't have that problem with Access, so I ruled out the possibility that there's something wrong with the original data.

Is this some sort of an encoding problem that arose during database import?
I would appreciate any pointers.

MS Access Memo Field To SQL Server Text Field

Aug 20, 2006

Hi all,

i've a reasonable amount of experience with MS Access and less
experience with SQL Server. I've just written an .NET application that
uses an SQL Server database. I need to collate lots of data from around
the company in the simplest way, that can then be loaded into the SQL
Server database.

I decided to collect the info in Excel because that's what most people
know best and is the quickest to use. The idea being i could just copy
and paste the records directly into the SQL Server database table (in
the same format) using the SQL Server Management Studio, for
example.

Trouble is, i have a problem with line feed characters. If an Excel
cell contains a chunk of text with line breaks (Chr(10) or Chr(13))
then the copy'n'paste doesn't work - only the text up to the first line
break is pasted into the SQL Server database cell. The rest is not
pasted for some reason.

I've tried with MS Access too, copying and pasting the contents of a
memo field into SQL Server database, but with exactly the same problem.
I've tried with 'text' or 'varchar' SQL Server database field formats.

Since i've no experience of using different types of databases
interacting together, can someone suggest the simplest way of
transferring the data without getting this problem with the line feeds?
I don't want to spend hours writing scripts/programs when it's just
this linefeed problem that is preventing the whole lot just being
cut'n'pasted in 5 seconds!

cheers

Dominic

Could somebodygive me an example how to do this, please.Thank you

Trouble is, now all of the threads in the activity monitor for the backup show 'suspended' and the backup appears to be not doing anything.

SQL Server 2008 :: Replication Subsystems Failed To Load

Sep 4, 2009

I am running SQL 2008 Enterprize Edition with SP1 on Windows 2008. I am trying to set up replication. I have completed the following:

1. Created distribution Database
2. Created publisher
3. Granted SQL Agent access to the ...MSSQL100Com folder to execute the agent_exe files
4. Granted SQL Agent access to ...MSSQLinn where the subsystem_dll files are located
5. Granted SQL Agent write permissions to ...MSSQL
epldata in order the write the bcp files

Each time I try to initialize the snapshot, I get the following errors in the SQL Agent Log

1. Log Step.......cannot be run because the LogReader subsystem failed to load. The job has been suspended.
2. Log Step.......cannot be run because the Snapshot subsystem failed to load. The job has been suspended.

I found posts where the records in the msdb.dbo.syssubsystems pointed to different folders than where the dll and exe files are located. So, I checked that, but they are correct.

The SQL Agent has sysadmin on the SQL Server and is using a windows service account.

I believe it is a security issue because I can run the executables from the command prompt to generate the snapshot for the publication. Have I missed the forest for the trees?
