SQL Server 2008 :: Merge Statement Takes Several Times Longer To Execute Than Equivalent Update

Jun 20, 2013

Problem Summary: Merge Statement takes several times longer to execute than equivalent Update, Insert and Delete as separate statements. Why?

I have a relatively large table (about 35,000,000 records, approximately 13 GB uncompressed and 4 GB with page compression - including indexes). A MERGE statement pretty consistently takes two or three minutes to perform an update, insert and delete. At one extreme, updating 82 (yes 82) records took 1 minute, 45 seconds. At the other extreme, updating 100,000 records took about five minutes.When I changed the MERGE to the equivalent separate UPDATE, INSERT & DELETE statements (embedded in an explicit transaction) the entire update took only 17 seconds. The query plans for the separate UPDATE, INSERT & DELETE statements look very similar to the query plan for the combined MERGE. However, all the row count estimates for the MERGE statement are way off.

Obviously, I am going to use the separate UPDATE, INSERT & DELETE statements. The actual query plans for the four statements ( combined MERGE and the separate UPDATE, INSERT & DELETE ) are attached. SQL Code to create the source and target tables and the actual queries themselves are below. I've also included the statistics created by my test run. Nothing else was running on the server when I ran the test.

Server Configuration:

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1, Enterprise Edition
3 x Quad-Core Xeon Processor
Max Degree of Parallelism = 8
148 GB RAM

SQL Code:

Target Table:
USE TPS;
IF OBJECT_ID('dbo.ParticipantResponse') IS NOT NULL
DROP TABLE dbo.ParticipantResponse;

[code]....

Remote Update Having A Linked Server Takes Forever To Execute

Oct 17, 2006

UPDATE CD SET col1=SR.col1,col2=SR.col2,col3=SR.col3,col4=SR.col4,col5=SR.col5,col6=SR.col6,col7=SR.col7,

col8=SR.col8,col9=SR.col9,col10=SR.col10

FROM LNKSQL1.db1.DBO.Table1 CD

join Table2 USRI on USRI.col00 = CD.col00

join table3 SR on USRI.col00 = SR.col00

Here, I'm trying to tun this from an instance and do a remote update. col00 is a primary key and there is a clustered index that exists on this column. When I run this query, it does a 'select * from tabl1' on the remote server and that table has about 60 million rows. I don't understand why it would do a select *... Also, we migrated to SQL 2005 a week or so back but before that everything was running smooth. I dont have the execution plan from before but this statement was fast. Right now, I can't run this statement at all. It takes about 37 secs to do one update. But if I did the update on a local server doing remote joins here, it would work fine. When I tried to show the execution plan, it took about 10 mins to show up an estimated plan and 99% of the time was spent on Remote scan. Please let me know what I can do to improve my situation. Thank you

SQL Server 2008 :: MERGE Statement - Cannot Filter Set Of Rows In Target Table

Feb 10, 2015

I have a table:

declare tableName table
(
uniqueid int identity(1,1),
id int,
starttime datetime2(0),
endtime datetime2(0),
parameter int
)

A stored procedure has new set of values for a given id. Sometimes the startime and endtime are the same, in which case I update the value of parameter. Sometimes I add a new time range (insert statement), and sometimes I delete a time range (delete statement).

I had a question on merge, with insert, delete and update and I got that resolved. However I have a different question regarding performance of the merge statement.

If my target table has hundreds of millions of records and I want to delete/update/insert a handful of records, will SQL server scan the entire target table? I can't have:

merge ( select * from tableName where id = 10 ) as target
using ...

and I can't have:

merge tableName as target
using [my query] as source on
source.id = target.id and
source.starttime = target.startime and
source.endtime = target.endtime
where target.id = 10
...

This means I cannot filter the set of rows in the target table to a handful of records where id = 10.

Have Insert Statement, Need Equivalent Update.

Jun 26, 2006

Using ms sql 2000I have 2 tables.I have a table which has information regarding a computer scan. Eachrecord in this table has a column called MAC which is the unique ID foreach Scan. The table in question holds the various scan results ofevery scan from different computers. I have an insert statement thatworks however I am having troulbe getting and update statement out ofit, not sure if I'm using the correct method to insert and thats why orif I'm just missing something. Anyway the scan results is stored as anXML document(@iTree) so I have a temp table that holds the releventinfo from that. Here is my Insert statement for the temporary table.INSERT INTO #tempSELECT * FROM openxml(@iTree,'ComputerScan/scans/scan/scanattributes/scanattribute', 1)WITH(ID nvarchar(50) './@ID',ParentID nvarchar(50) './@ParentID',Name nvarchar(50) './@Name',scanattribute nvarchar(50) '.')Now here is the insert statement for the table I am having troublewith.INSERT INTO tblScanDetail (MAC, GUIID, GUIParentID, ScanAttributeID,ScanID, AttributeValue, DateCreated, LastModified)SELECT @MAC, #temp.ID, #temp.ParentID,tblScanAttribute.ScanAttributeID, tblScan.ScanID,#temp.scanattribute, DateCreated = getdate(),LastModified =getdate()FROM tblScan, tblScanAttribute JOIN #temp ONtblScanAttribute.Name =#temp.NameIf there is a way to do this without the temporary table that would begreat, but I haven't figured a way around it yet, if anyone has anyideas that would be great, thanks.

SP Takes Much Longer In SQL2005

Mar 28, 2008

I could use a little help here. We have a stored procedure that runs on SQL2000 and for a large dataset only takes 1-2 minutes. On SQL2005 however, it takes around 25 minutes. Any advice or insight anyone could give would be great.

Here's the stored procedure:

CREATE PROCEDURE daa_upd_relationship_balance_hist
AS
begin tran
insert fldarts..daa_relationship_bal_hist
select <-- list snipped -->
from daa_relationship_bal drb, daa_user_review dur
where
drb.acct_no = dur.acct_no and
drb.control_2 = dur.control_2 and
drb.nb_gl_cost_ctr = dur.nb_gl_cost_ctr and
drb.nb_dda_sav_type = dur.nb_dda_sav_type and
drb.acct_no+drb.control_2+drb.nb_gl_cost_ctr+drb.nb_dda_sav_type+convert(char(10),dur.activity_date, 101)
not in
(select acct_no+control_2+nb_gl_cost_ctr+nb_dda_sav_type+convert(char(10), activity_date, 101)
from fldarts..daa_relationship_bal_hist)
if @@error = 0
commit tran
else
begin
rollback tran
print '!!!Error (daa_relationship_bal_hist) : Relationship Balance History not updated'
end
return
GO

So we have three tables. Here's a schema for each and the indexes on them. I've omitted columns from the tables that are not utilized in this query.

daa_relationship_bal:

CREATE TABLE [daa_relationship_bal] (
[control_2] [char] (3) NOT NULL ,
[nb_gl_cost_ctr] [char] (7) NOT NULL ,
[acct_no] [char] (14) NOT NULL ,
[nb_dda_sav_type] [char] (3) NOT NULL
)

index:

idx_upd_balance_hist nonclustered located on PRIMARY acct_no, control_2, nb_gl_cost_ctr, nb_dda_sav_type

daa_user_review:

CREATE TABLE [daa_user_review] (
[control_2] [char] (3) NOT NULL ,
[nb_gl_cost_ctr] [char] (7) NOT NULL ,
[acct_no] [char] (14) NOT NULL ,
[nb_dda_sav_type] [char] (1) NOT NULL ,
[activity_date] [datetime] NULL
)

index:

PK_daa_user_review_1__37 nonclustered, unique, primary key located on INDEXES control_2, nb_gl_cost_ctr, acct_no, nb_dda_sav_type

daa_relationship_bal_hist:

CREATE TABLE [daa_relationship_bal_hist] (
[control_2] [char] (3) NOT NULL ,
[nb_gl_cost_ctr] [char] (7) NOT NULL ,
[acct_no] [char] (14) NOT NULL ,
[nb_dda_sav_type] [char] (3) NOT NULL ,
[activity_date] [datetime] NOT NULL
)

index:

PK_daa_rel_bal_hist_1__37 nonclustered, unique, primary key located on PRIMARY control_2, nb_gl_cost_ctr, acct_no, nb_dda_sav_type, activity_date

Any help on this would be great. If more information is needed, please let me know.

Why DELETE Takes Longer Than INSERT?

Jul 20, 2005

I'm running an ISP database in SQL 6.5 which has a table 'calls'. When thenew month starts I create a new table with the same fields and move the dataof previous month into that table and delete it from calls. So 'calls' holdsthe data of only the current month. for example at the start of november2003 I ran the queriesCreate Table Oct2003Calls {................................}/* Now insert data of october into new table */INSERT Oct2003CallsSELECT *FROM callsWHERE calldate < '11/1/03'/* Finaly delete october data from calls table */DELETE FROM callsWHERE calldate < '11/1/03'The problem is that while the insert query takes about 2 minutes to executethe delete queries takes over 10 minutes to affect the same no. of rows. Whyis that?This causes problems because user authentication stops when this query isrunning which means users cant connect to the internet.

SQL Server 2012 :: MERGE Statement Attempted To UPDATE Or DELETE Same Row More Than Once

Mar 12, 2015

I have created a Dynamic Merge statement SCD2 Store procedure , which insert the records if no matches and if bbxkey matches from source table to destination table thne it updates old record as lateteverion 0 and insert new record with latest version 1.

I am getting below error when I ahve more than 1 bbxkey in my source table. How can I ignore this.

BBXkey is nothing but I am deriving by combining 2 columns.

Msg 8672, Level 16, State 1, Line 6

The MERGE statement attempted to UPDATE or DELETE the same row more than once. This happens when a target row matches more than one source row. A MERGE statement cannot UPDATE/DELETE the same row of the target table multiple times. Refine the ON clause to ensure a target row matches at most one source row, or use the GROUP BY clause to group the source rows.

Stored Procedure Takes Longer To Run Than The Script That's In It???

Mar 3, 2005

Hi there... I wrote a SP to check for different types of exceptions in a few database tables. When I was writing the scripts, everything seemed to execute fairly quickly and I was satisfied with the performance. When I completed the scripts and compiled them into a stored procedure and ran it (using Exec), it took a lot longer to run than I thought it would. So I went through each section of the script and ran each portion individually to see which part was taking so long.... but all the scripts ran very quickly. The individual scripts, run separately, took a combined total of 0:26 to run.... but the SP was taking 1:30 to run. (????) So then I took ALL the script contained in the SP and ran it by itself in the Query Analyzer.... it took 0:27 to run. (??????)

So basically... the script that I wrote takes 27 seconds to execute, when run by itself in the Query Analyzer... but when I take that very same script and turn it into a Store Procedure and run it, it takes a minute and a half.

Any ideas why?? I thought SP's were supposed to run faster because they're pre-compiled.

Backup Takes Longer At Month End Than Begining

Aug 1, 2007

sql 2005 stnd on a server of decent spec.

dbase in question is only about 5GB on a 450GB partition.

at the begining of the month I run:

BACKUP LOG [objectstore] TO DISK ='D:BackupsProdackup_objectstore.BAK'
WITH NOFORMAT , INIT , NAME = N'objectstore backup'

and then every 10 minutes (within working hours) for the rest of the month I
run:

BACKUP LOG [objectstore] TO DISK ='D:BackupsProdackup_objectstore.BAK'
WITH NOFORMAT , NOINIT , NAME = N'objectstore backup'.

The amount of data that gets backed up is the same through out the month and
the loading on the server as a whole also stays constant throughout the month
- NOTHING increases throughout the month that would affect this server in any
way, yet at the begining of the month the backup takes 10 seconds, and at the
end, it gets up to 5-6 minutes.

why?

but From linked server this takes 8 minutes????!!!??!:

'D7FBD152-F7AE-449C-A875-C85B5F6BB462')

What settings or whatever would cause this to take so much longer from the linked server?

Edit:
Note) Other queries from the linked server do not have this behavior. From the stored procedure where we have examined how long each query/update takes... this particular query is the culprit for the time eating. I thought it was to do specefically with this table. However as stated when a query window is opened directly onto that server the update takes no time at all.

2nd Edit:
Could it be to do with this linked server setting?
Collation Compatible
right now it is set to false? I also asked this question in a message below, but figured I should put it up here.

Upgraded To SQL Server 2005. Updates No Longer Work. Error Could Not Find Server 'DEVDB' In Sysservers. Execute Sp_addlinkedse

Hello!

We just upgraded to SQL Server 2005 from SQL Server 2000. The DB was backed up using Enterprise Manager and restored with SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP. Everything went as expected (no errors, warnings, or any other indicator of problems).

The DB resides in a DB Server (Server1) and the application we are running is a Client/Server system where the AppServer resides on Server2.

During the application's operation all read, create, and delete transactions work fine but no update works. When viewing details in Trace Log I see this message after attempting any update:

Could not find server 'Server1' in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers. (7202)

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Is this even possible in SSIS, or am I better off using a loop and running the update EXECUTE SQL Statement for each individual key value, as in the following example?

SQL Server 2008 :: Same Database With Two Different Machines At Different Times

Jun 19, 2015

For security reasons customer wants to put a SQL database on an encrypted thumb drive (IronKey). Here's the rub though. He wants to be able to work with the data on a workstation. Then, if he takes his laptop out of the office he wants to be able to simply plug that thumb drive into the laptop and fire up SQL on the laptop and use that same database. Procedurally this would work in that the database can be created so that the location is the same from both machine viewpoints, however will the two different SQL instances allow moving the database back and forth like this?

Execute SQL Task With Update Statement

Aug 14, 2007

I am running an update statement in an execute sql task, it will run one time but then fails after that. Whats going on?

Here is my query I'm running.

UPDATE encounter
SET mrn = r.mrn, resourcecode = r.resourcecode, resgroup = r.resgroup, apptdate = r.apptdate, appttime = r.appttime
FROM SCFDBWH.SigSched.dbo.EncounterNARaw AS r INNER JOIN
encounter ON encounter.encounter_number = r.Encounter

What I'm doing is pulling info from a flat file, inserting it into the encounter table, I then run this sql statement to pull additional info from another table on another server, and update the encounter table with the corresponding info. Pretty straight forward. But what is really getting me is that the package will run 1 time but if I wait ten minutes and try running it again it bombs. Any ideas?

SQL Server 2008 :: Putting Rows Together To Get Total Times

Jan 30, 2015

I am building a query. I have a table with 4 columns and need to try and put the times together. There are some inconsistencies with this, and i'm hoping to exclude them.. Here is a sample table:

Function | Employee | DateTime
--------------------------------------------
1 | 1 | 1/30/2015 1:47 PM
2 | 1 | 1/30/2015 1:49 PM
2 | 1 | 1/30/2015 1:50 PM
3 | 2 | 1/30/2015 1:37 PM
3 | 2 | 1/30/2015 1:39 PM
3 | 1 | 1/30/2015 1:40 PM
4 | 1 | 1/30/2015 1:42 PM
4 | 1 | 1/30/2015 1:45 PM

Function 1 = Clock In Type 1
Function 2 = Clock Out Type 1
Function 3 = Clock In Type 2
Function 4 = Clock Out Type 2

Basically what I need to do is take the time from rows with Function 1 and match it with Function 2 so I can get a total time of the clock in. Function 3 rows need to match up with Function 4 rows so I can get another set of total times. There may be more clock in rows then clock out rows or more clock out rows then clock in rows, and there may be multiple clock ins & outs per day per employee. I'm basically trying to get totals for each Clock In/Out type.

Does The Actual Update Statement Of A Table Affect Merge Replication?

Dec 8, 2006

Suppose your using Merge Replication.

2 Users in 2 locations issue updates to the same table. 1 updating 1 column and the other updating another column. Now in reality the actual Stored Procedure issuing the update statement is passed in all the possible columns that could change and builds an update statement that updates all columns even the ones that havent changed.

Will this break Merge Replications conflict tracking? Or does SQL Server 2005 Merge Replication pickup that in reality the 2 updates only in reality changed the values in 2 columns.

SQL Server 2008 :: Left Joins And Query Plan Compile Times

Mar 8, 2015

We have a view with many left joins. The original creators of this view might have been lazy or sloppy, I don't know. I have rewritten the query to proper inner joins where required and also nested left joins.

So rather then the following exemplary fragment

select <many items>
from A
left join B on B.id_A = A.id
left join C on C.id_B = B.idthis now looks like
select <many items>
from A
left join (B
join C on C.id_B = B.id
) on B.id_A = A.id

Compilation time of the original view was 18s, of the new rewritten view 4s. The performance of execution is also better (not counting the compile of course). The results of the query are identical. There are about 30 left joins in the original view.

I can imagine that the optimizer has difficulty with all these left joins. But 14s is quite a big difference. I haven't looked into detail in the execution plans yet. I noticed that in both cases the Reason for Early Termination of Statement Optimization was Time Out.

SQL Server 2008 :: Tell Number Of Times People Use SSMS To Change Client Data?

Mar 21, 2015

I'm trying to quantify the number of times folks use SQL Server Management Studio to change client data in one of our production databases. Does SQL Server keep this statistic? How do I get to this data?

Log Backup Takes Much Longer Than DB Backup

Sep 20, 2000

How is it possible that a 133MB SQL7 database, the backup of the database itself takes 2 seconds, the transaction log backup takes 25 minutes??? We are doing log backup every 10 minutes, and appending.

Thanks.
