SQL Server 2008 Release Candidate (Express)Beta
Jun 17, 2008
I downloaded SQL Server 2008 Release Candidate (Express) Beta on 6/16/08. Installation started but failed. A message stated Microsoft NET Framework 2.0 SP2 needs to be installed first.
I downloaded SP2 and installed it. However, when I try again to install the SQL 2008 Release Candidate Beta I get the same message that SP2 must first be installed.
Can someone tell me how to make the SQL Beta version installer recognize the previously installed SP2 Service Pack?
Thanks, Norman

Hi All,
I am doing an upgrade of SQL Server from Beta 3 release to the release version. I will appreciate if I get some information , some tips that I should follow which will make my task simpler. The database is very critical and big. It has huge amounts of stored procedures.
If you can tell me any site which gives information regarding this that will be also helpful..
Thanks

Hi,
Is it possible to install SQL Server 2005 Eval on a Virtual PC 2007
client running Server 2008 Beta? Nothing says it isn't possible, it
says I need to service pack it right away, but before it gets started
it comes up with the error 'sqlcu.dll failed to load'. Anyone know
what this is all about?
Any ideas?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I plan to upgrade from SQL Server Express Beta 2 to RTM. Since this requires and uninstall and re-install process (not just upgrade), what are the steps I need to take to backup my database in Express Beta 2 and then import it into the new RTM version? I have scripts to recreate the tables and stored procedures, but how do I get the data migrated? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Kris.

I'm trying to upgrade the Default Instance of MSDE 2000 Release A which is installed with Mixed Mode and strong password to SQL Server 2005 Express in a Windows 2000 Server with SP4. On the Upgrade Logon Information screen, if I select SQL Server Authentication Mode, it will give me this message:
SQL Server Setup Cannot Upgrade the specified instance by using SQL Server Credential. You must use Windows Authentication credential for the upgrade.
Thanks for any help.

Hi all,
Yesterday, I just downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) and tried to install it in my Windows XP Pro PC that is on Microsoft NT 4 LAN System. I got the following error: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP setup The Microfost .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed. Please install before running setup.
This morning, I downloaded the NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) from the Microsoft Download Center and installed it in my Windows XP Pro PC. Then I tried to install the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) again. This time I got a new error: SQL Server 2005 Setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio, .NET Framework, or SQL Server 2005. Use ADD or Remove Programs to remove these components, and then run SQL Server 2005 Setup again.
I am confused and lost in this installation problem. Was the .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) a wrong Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 I downloaded and installed in my PC? Where is the right Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 for the SQL Server 2005 Express? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

I have a database which was created in a beta release of SQL Server Express. It was also create when I had the .Net Framework 2.0 Beta installed.
Since then, I have installed .Net Framework 2.0 (Current Release) because that is what was required for MS SQL Server Management Studio Express.
When I try to connect to the DB now it says Cannot connect to server.
I also have the mdf/ldf files. When I try to attach them on another computer running the latest version of SQL Server Express it says:
Database 'Name' connot be upgraded because its non-release version (587) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this vertion of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database....
Any ideas how i can get the mdf/ldf files converted over? Or how I can attach the the ealier version of sql server express?? thanks.

Hello!
Recently, I set up server with Windows Web Server 2008 RC1, SQL 2008 Express beta, .NET 3.5, IIS 7.
I'm running ASP.NET web application with SQL database. Everything works fine until the first application state on the server expires. After that, any postback that starts a new application state on the server and connects to the database, results in the following error:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
Is this a bug that will be fixed in release of Windows / SQL or am I doing something wrong?
Many thanks for help,
Jan

Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express? The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe?
TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)

How do I set up my SQL Server2005 Express, so that I can use some sample databases for my VS 2008 Express? Any difference for SQL Server 2005 Express between VS 2008 Expressdownload and SQL Server 2005 Express download?

I was wondering if this is normal. I am creating a website in VS 2008. I created a SQL db and am using SQL server express.
I can go into SQL server managment studio express and open the DB when I start my PC. I can still access the DB when I start VS 2008 and my project but when I run the project I can not access the DB any longer even when the project is not longer running and I'm in design mode. Even if I close VS 2008 I still cannot access DB through SQL server managment. The only way I can access the DB again is if I restart my PC.
Is this normal?
I am running Vista Ultimate.
Thanks,
Ty

Or does the VB 2005 Application have to be upgraded to VB 2008 (including service pack)?

I have a table that looks like this:
ItemID TokenID WordCount
12345 11334 5
12345 3453 1
12345 546546 2
12345 242555 1
12345 556346 4
12345 346346 1
Code SnippetCREATE TABLE [dbo].[ItemTokensLink](
[ItemID] [int] NOT NULL,
[TokenID] [int] NOT NULL,
[WordCount] [int] NOT NULL DEFAULT ((1)),
CONSTRAINT [PK_ItemTokensLink_1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[ItemID] ASC,
[TokenID] ASC
)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]
) ON [PRIMARY]
So this table has now reached over 22 million rows. The problem is my machine only has 1GB ram....so SQl Server tries to load up the whole table and this is ~560MB....equals zero ram for ...well anything else!
Does SQL Server load up an entire table when performing an INSERT?
Code Snippet
INSERT INTO ItemTokensLink(ItemID, TokenID, WordCount)
SELECT DISTINCT @ItemID as ItemID, t.TokenID, Count(t.TokenID) as WordCount
FROM #Tokens t
Group by TokenID
@ItemID is parameter provided
#Tokens is a temp table create with a word list
Would partitioning help here?
The table is is 80% of the time added to and the ItemID will always increase. What is the best to deal with massive tables that are inserted to frequently?
How does SQL Server decide when to load a table into memory?
TIA

I am using the Adventureworks database to to some development training in VB Express 2008.
I have reinstalled the the database from scratch three times. I can successfully attach the database in the SQL Server management studio, but as soon as I make a connection to the database in VB Express and then try to go back into the studio to verify my data changes, I get an error message that the log file does not match the data file. After I get that error in the SSMSE, I can no longer establish a connection in VB Express (login fail error message).
The only solution I've found is to reinstall the .mdf and .ldf files. Obviously, that's not getting me too far in my learning. Hopefully someone can help me out?
