if you can restore a database to Server B using Server A as the service. Meaning we would issue the command on Server A but somehow point to Server B as where we want the restore to happen.
The backup file would be in a location independent of both servers.

I currently have a job set up on on Server S now I exactly want the same job set up on the reports server to get some consistency.

Is it possible to view the Connection String information of a remote login/session? I want to know if the login is looking-up the database server via IP address, servername (NetBIOS name) or fully-qualified domain name (FQDN).
Using these DMVs I can get a lot of relevant information:
sys.dm_exec_sessions
Program Name (eg. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio),
Client Interface Name (eg. .Net SqlClient Data Provider)
sys.dm_exec_connections
Net Transport (eg. TCP),
Client Net Address and TCP Port
but not how the server's IP address was resolved. Is the connection string ever sent by the client to the server, or just used for DNS lookup?
I am restoring a database with 10yrs worth of data which have monthly partitions but i would like to keep only 5yrs of data after the restore is done, what is the best/faster approach to delete the 5yrs data without deleting the partitions as that may cause the db in accessible.

Everything worked fine except very strange working of CLR assemblies functions.The result of the function is very odd. It manipulates the numeric string and return the result. It is returning very strange result on SQL 2012 as compared to SQL 2008.Example SQL 2008 ManipulateString('1234') returns 2345 On SQL 2012 the same call returns 1155.I am also trying to deploy the same assembly to SQL 2012 server database. I have successfully register the assembly, but the database do not list the exposed methods.

If I restore, I assume this would just overwrite which is obviously the worst thing that can happen. if i attach the backup, how does this affect the current live DB? how do i make sure that it's not getting accessed and mistaken for the live DB?

I'm trying to connect to a database using a service account that we got created. The ID is an AD account and was added to the db as such. When I try to connect to the database using the account with the password I get [login failed for domainid]. The DBA mentioned that its setup to use windows auth, however, I can't connect with this service account using windows Auth, due to I'm using to connect via code.
How can I connect to the database from my code using this ID?
I have the ID and pwd in my code to connect with, does the ID have to be setup differently in the Database?

Furthermore, this sp is called according with SQL Server Agent Job's schedule. On my PC SQL Server works under Local System account and this web service is called correctly (Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM). Hi all, I have moved hosting companies and am trying to get my website and MSSQL database sorted on the new server. I am using an enterprise type tool and can connect to the database the new hosting company has created on their SQL server with no problem. I now want to upload the data I had in the database previously. All I have to do this from is .BAK and .TRN files on my local hard drive. Using the restore option from the menu, I tried to select the .BAK file I have saved to restore from it, and got the following error:
"EXECUTE permission denied on object 'xp_availablemedia', database 'master', owner 'dbo'."
I also tried the advice given in this post as the problem seems similar and follows the same pattern: http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=40841
but there are loads of users listed for sp_who - it seems to be the users for all the databases on the host's server so I didn't follow the next step to disconnect them!
Any advice as to what I need to do would be much appreciated.

I would like to call a web service from a sql server 2000 s.proc/sql job, but if there is a better way please let me know. I'm using Captaris Workflow to create and manipulate workflow processes. I have a sql job that will create some pdf's. I want to call the web service that creates a new process in a step from that sql job. I have read about doing this with extended s.procs, but I'm trying to find any possible solutions. Essentially, the web method I want to call will insert several records into sql so I know I can at least do that. I would still like to know if I can make a call to the web service from the sql job. Anyway the dynamic call I am having problems with is that I need to dynamically create a statement to backup a database. It works as long as the database is on the same server / instance as the stored procedure. I want to be able to from server/instance A create a command that does a backup of a database that is on server B. I just can't figure out the syntax for a database backup where the database is on another server.

I have successfully developed a Transact-SQL stored procedure which calls a CLR function, which calls a web service. I am using a Visual Studio 2005 SQL Server Project to perform the necessary magic.
Is there a neat way to deploy this stuff to a production server?
It is bad enough deploying the sp and function, but the web server proxy also needs to be changed to refer to the production web service.
This all looks very nasty and complicated.
Am I missing something?

I'm a beginner w ith SQL Express and am having some problems. I am using 2005 SP1 and installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express as well. I have a backup from a SQL Server 7.0 database that I am trying to restore into my database using the management studio. When I try to restore from the file into my database, I get the error,
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of the system database on the device D:GMBeta2Local.bak cannot be restored because it was created by a different version of the server (7.00.1063) than this server (9.00.3033). (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
Is this true? Is there any way for me to get this data into my SQL Server 2005 express on my laptop?

1. TCP/IP Enabled for SQL Server Network Configuration Protocols, SQL Native Client 10.0 configuration clients, and SQL Native Client 10.0 configuration clients(32 bit)
2. Firewall disabled to make sure its not interferring with things.
I noticed the SQL Server Agent is Stopped. Not sure if this is the issue. When I try and turn this from disabled to Automatic or Manual, I get this error:
Remote procedure call failed (0x800706be)
It shouldn't be this difficult.
We have a process that uses a stored procedure: sp_MysteryProcedure....
The problem I am having is: I am 95% certain the issue lies with this stored procedure, but I cannot find the process that calls this procedure. It could be a SQL Server Job that calls the procedure directly, it could be an SSIS (*.dtsx) process that calls this procedure, or some other random process.
One of the big issues is we have tons of *.dtsx packages that call a bunch of stored procedures, but it doesn't seem a normal Windows Search (Start --> Search) searches these files (or perhaps something else is going on with this search).
So my question is multi-part.....
1). How would one go about finding a rouge process that loads data via a stored procedure if we believe we know the stored procedures name?
2). How do you search *.dtsx files?
I was contacted by the SAN team to test backup/restore of larger databases using a split-mirror backup (BCV) or clone that is taken from production db server and copied to another sql box. They want to use this process once a week. I see the mounted drives with the data/log files. All looks good. Initially I attempted to attach the databases and received (Unable to open the physical file db.mdf Operating System Error 5 Access is denied). I manually granting SQLServerMSSQLUser$<computer_name>$<instance_name> on all of the physical files 20 total. That worked.
Since this will be weekly, the SAN team performed the copy again and now none of the databases can communicate with the newly copied files. NTFS permissions need to be set again. I'm getting (Operating System error 21: the device is not ready). Is there something that I'm missing in this process how the vendor BCV clones the data and SQL communicates with the copied files as I was thinking it would be more automated process?

We currenlty have SQL Server 2000 installed inhouse for testing. A client has given us a backup of their 2005 database and i'm wondering if the restore will work into 2000, or any issues i should be aware of. Should i just install msde locally on my machine and restore the database?

I noticed when I restore a master database to a server other then the one which created the backup of master, SQL Server contains the following three local security groups that were defined on the source server. The problem is these groups are "local" and do not apply to the server where master was restored.

There appears to be no Microsoft documentation explaining how to handle these groups when restoring master from one server to another. My assumption is that whenever restoring master to another server you must drop these three groups and add the correct corresponding groups along with the appropriate permissions. I don't understand why SQL Server would not rebuild this information for you during a restore.
Any explanations?

I'm having trouble with restoring the master db on w2k3 sql2000 sp3a to a Secondary Standby server.
Firstly, I place the server in Single user mode and then restore the master db. The sql server then tries to restart sql services but immediately stops as soon as it starts up.

I am getting this error with a web service trying to fill a strongly-typed dataset stored in another project that the web service has connection to. I keep getting this error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
I set it to allow TCP/IP only, TCP/IP and Named Pipes, and Named Pipes only remote connections allowed. But it still doesn't work. I don't understand what the problem may be. I stopped and started the database engine service every time (this is a SQL Express database attached to the server, by the way).

I'm setting up a simple SSRS implementation for a non-profit organization, using two servers hosted at a data center. The first server has SQL Server Standard Edition and Reporting Services installed. I've designed and deployed a number of useful reports on this server.
I was hoping to isolate this first server by installing IIS and SSRS on the second server, have users browse from the Internet to that second server (over SSL, of course), and have all reports served up from databases (and, presumably, the report server database) on the first server.
During the installation of SSRS on the second server, however, I'm being prompted to specify the service account. According to the help text:
"Reporting Services. Service accounts are used to configure a report server database connection. Choose a domain user account if you want to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance. If you are using a local report server database, you can use a domain user account or Local System to run the service."
I believe I want to configure SSRS to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance; therefore, it appears that I need to enter a domain user account. The only problem is, neither server belongs to a domain; they are members of a simple two-server workgroup.
Does SSRS, configured to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance, require a domain? Does what I'm hoping to accomplish require a domain? Creating a two-server domain seems like overkill for this implementation, doesn't it?

I am task with identifying the source database name, id, and server name for each staging table that I create. I need to add this to a derived column on all staging tables created from merging same tables on different servers together.
When doing a Merge Join, there is no way to identify the source of data so I would like to see if data came from one database more than the other servers or if their are duplicates across servers.
The thing that bugs me about SSIS Data Flow task is there is no way to do an easy Execute SQL Task after I select my ADO.NET Source to get this information because my connection string is dynamic and there is no way of know which data source is being picked up at runtime.
For Example I have Products table on Server 1 and 2:
Server 2 has more Products and would like to join the two together to create a staging table.
I want see the following:

I try to copy database from remote SQL Server(6.5) to our local
SQL Server(7.0). I try this way: First, in Enterprice Manager,
I try "NEW SQL SERVER REGISTRATION" using "Register SQL
Server wizard". The remote server give me the IP, login name
and password. then, I try connect option by "login using
SQL Server". But I got message say:"specialted server not found,
Connection open,create file". some times say:"client server access
denied..." some times say:"timeout". What's going on here?
So, I can not get going on with "Import data wizard".
