SQL Server 2008 :: Populate One Dataset In SSRS Based On Results From Another Dataset Within Same Project?

May 26, 2015

I have a report with multiple datasets, the first of which pulls in data based on user entered parameters (sales date range and property use codes). Dataset1 pulls property id's and other sales data from a table (2014_COST) based on the user's parameters. I have set up another table (AUDITS) that I would like to use in dataset6. This table has 3 columns (Property ID's, Sales Price and Sales Date). I would like for dataset6 to pull the Property ID's that are NOT contained in the results from dataset1. In other words, I'd like the results of dataset6 to show me the property id's that are contained in the AUDITS table but which are not being pulled into dataset1. Both tables are in the same database.

SQL Server 2008 :: Large Binary Dataset - Database Or File System?

Jun 2, 2015

I have a well-structured but also very large binary data-set that is generated by a C++ application every five minutes. The data needs to be accessed by SQL applications. Since data is generated every five minutes, performance is key, both for write and read. The data set is about 500MB.If data is written to the file system, the write performance doesn't involve SQL server. For reading it, I have a CLR to read the portions of the data that I need based on offset and length. That works and is very fast. The problem is that data is stored in the file system, so it is not self-contained within the database.

A second option that I haven't explored yet, is to write the data into a table as VARBINARY(MAX). I would read the data using SUBSTRING with appropriate offset and length. Performance of SQL write/read of binary data of this size, and whether there is a third option I haven't thought off. I'm using SQL Server 2014.

SQL Server 2008 :: Return A Single Table With Three Columns

Jan 26, 2015

I have multiple databases in the server and all my databases have tables: stdVersions, stdChangeLog. The stdVersions table have field called DatabaseVersion which stored the version of the database. The stdChangeLog table have a field called ChangedOn which stored the date of any change made in the database.

I need to write a query/stored procedure/function that will return all the database names, version and the date changed on. The results should look something like this:

DatabaseName DatabaseVersion DateChangedOn
OK5_AAGLASS 5.10.1.2 2015/01/12
OK5_SHOPRITE 5.9.1.6 2015/01/10
OK5_SALDANHA 5.10.1.2 2014/12/23

The results should be ordered by DateChangedOn.

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Return 1 Particular Column From Another Table In Join

Apr 25, 2015

I'm creating a sql stored procedure inside this proc it returns some information about the user, i.e location, logged in, last logged in, etc I need to join this on to the photos table and return the photo which has been set as the profile picture, if it hasn't been set then return the first top 1 if that makes sense?

The user has the option to upload photos so there might be no photos for a particular user, which I believe I can fix by using a left join

My photos table is constructed as follows:

CREATE TABLE [User].[User_Photos](
[Id] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[UserId] [bigint] NOT NULL,
[PhotoId] [varchar](100) NOT NULL,
[IsProfilePic] [bit] NULL,

[Code] ....

Currently as it stands the proc runs but it doesn't return a particular user because they have uploaded a photo so I need to some how tweak the above to return null if a photo isn't present which is where I'm stuck.

SQL Server 2008 :: Return From Script Instead Of Drop Existing For DDL Scripts?

Mar 25, 2015

Let's say I have a function named MyCustomFunction and I want to ensure that it exists in the database. Let's say I have a create script for the function. I want the script to be runnable multiple times if needed. A common way to do this is to check for an object_id at the top of the function like this:

IF OBJECT_ID('MyCustomFunction') IS NULL
DROP FUNCTION MyCustomFunction
GO
CREATE FUNCTION MyCustomFunction...

But is there a more elegant way to do this? For example, instead of dropping and recreating the function, is there a way to simply exit from the script and do nothing if the function already exists? Something like this:

IF OBJECT_ID('MyCustomFunction') IS NULL RETURN
GO
CREATE FUNCTION MyCustomFunction...

SQL Server 2008 :: Return All Rows From Any Table Containing Value Range In Specified Column?

Sep 3, 2015

I have several databases to deal with, all with + 250 tables. The databases are not identical and do not conform to a specific naming convention for table names. Most but not all tables have a column called "LastUpdated" containing a date/time (obviously). I'd like to be able to find all rows within a whole database (table by table) where the date/time is greater than a specified date/time.

I'm looking for a reliable query that will return all the rows in each of the tables but without me having to write hundreds of individual scripts "SELECT * FROM [dbo.xyz] WHERE LastUpdated > '2015-01-01 09:00:00:000'", or have to look through each table first to determine which of them has the LastUpdated field.

SQL Server 2008 :: Carriage Return Line Feeds In Flat File Imports

One of the files has a field that contains the CRLF combination in a few places so that field is split over several rows. This is readily visible when I look at the flat file. However, when I'm importing the file, the Import and Export wizard seems to ignore them and import the files as they should with one row per record.

StoredProcedure And DataSet Return

Feb 9, 2008

I am trying to write a function for some source to make a call out to and fill a RadioButtonList.  I am running into a few problems though that I need assistance on.  (I am new to DataSets)
Here is the function to fill the RBL:
1 Private Function GetDataSet(ByVal QuestionID As Integer, ByVal QuestionType As Integer, ByVal LocaleID As Integer, ByVal GroupingNum As Integer) As DataSet
2 Dim cnn As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("ConnectionString").ConnectionString)
3 Dim cmd As New SqlCommand
4 cmd.CommandText = "usp_responses_sel"
5 cmd.CommandType = Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure
6
7 ' Fill usp_ with Parameters
8 cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("QuestionID", QuestionID)
9 cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("LocaleID", LocaleID)
10 cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("GroupingNum", GroupingNum)
11
12 Dim da As New SqlDataAdapter
13 da.SelectCommand = cmd
14 Dim ds As New DataSet
15 da.Fill(ds, "response")
16 Return ds
17 End Function

So my issue is with line 15 [da.Fill(ds, "response")].  I pulled this function from somewhere else and am trying to tailor it to my needs.  However, I do not understand what I need to do with this line and it keeps bombing out.  I thought this references the DB Table but in my case, the SP has several tables joined together.  Is this how I reference it from the calling source code?  Please assist.
Also, I am having problems understanding the binding process from the calling source.  Here is my code that calls the function:1 Dim ds As DataSet = GetDataSet(CType(e.Item.DataItem("question_id").ToString, Integer), QuestionTypeID.Value, intLocale, 2)
2 rblResponses2.DataSource = ds
3 rblResponses2.DataBind()

What do I need to do with it from here and how can I work with it after it's bound?
Thanks

Dataset Stored Procedure Return Value

Mar 24, 2008

I'm not sure if anybody else is having a problem with the Return Value of Stored Procedures where you get the "Specified cast not valid" error, but I think I found a "bug" in VS2005 that prevents you from having a return value other than Int64 datatype. I tried to look for the solution for myself on the forums but unfortunately I just couldn't find it. Hopefully, this will help out anyone who had come across the same problem.
Basically, I have a stored procedure that I wanted to call as an Update for my ObjectDataSource that returns a Money value. Everytime I do this, I keep getting that error saying "Specified cast not valid" even when I try to change the @RETURN_VALUE data type to Currency or Money. After a long session of eye gouging moments, I decided to look at the code for my dataset. There, I noticed that the ScalarCallRetval for my StoredProcedure query was still set to System.Int64. I changed it to System.Object and, like a miracle, everything works like its suppose to.
Ex. protected void SomeObjectDataSource_Updated(object sender, ObjectDataSourceStatusEventArgs e)
{GrandTotalLabel.Text = ((decimal)e.ReturnValue).ToString("C");
}

Return One Dataset Instead Of Many From A Stored Procedure

Feb 6, 2007

Hello everyone,

I have a great deal of experience in Intrebase Stored Procedures, and there I had the FOR SELECT statement to loop through a recordset, and return the records I wish (or to make any other calculations in the loop).
I'm new in MS SQL Stored Procedures, and I try to achieve the same if possible. Below is a Stored Procedure written for MS SQL, which returns me a calculated field for every record from a table, but it places different values in the calculated field. Everything is working fine, except that I receive back as many datasets as many records I have in the Guests table. I would like to get back the same info, but in one dataset:

ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetVal AS

Declare @fname varchar(50)
Declare @lname varchar(50)
Declare @grname varchar(100)
Declare @isgroup int
Declare @id int
Declare @ListName varchar(200)

DECLARE guests_cursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT id, fname, lname, grname, b_isgroup FROM guests

OPEN guests_cursor

-- Perform the first fetch.
FETCH NEXT FROM guests_cursor into @id, @fname, @lname, @grname, @isgroup

-- Check @@FETCH_STATUS to see if there are any more rows to fetch.
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS =0
BEGIN
if (@isgroup=1)
Select @grname+'('+@lname+', '+@fname+')' as ListName
else
Select @lname+', '+@fname as ListName
-- This is executed as long as the previous fetch succeeds.
FETCH NEXT FROM guests_cursor into @id, @fname, @lname, @grname, @isgroup

END

CLOSE guests_cursor
DEALLOCATE guests_cursor
GO

can somebody help me please. Thanks in advance

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Make Sproc Return Errors For Underlying Table Errors

Jul 1, 2015

I recently updated the datatype of a sproc parameter from bit to tinyint. When I executed the sproc with the updated parameters the sproc appeared to succeed and returned "1 row(s) affected" in the console. However, the update triggered by the sproc did not actually work.

The table column was a bit which only allows 0 or 1 and the sproc was passing a value of 2 so the table was rejecting this value. However, the sproc did not return an error and appeared to return success. So is there a way to configure the database or sproc to return an error message when this type of error occurs?

Seeking Advice: SQL Server On Win 2008 Virtual Server Or Just Win 2008?

Hello - does anyone have experience w/SQL Server 2005 in a virtual environment? I'm considering this for a production environment but not sure if performance will suffer. Our databases will have a lot of writing but not too much reading. A SSRS solution is currently the only app. connecting to the SQL db. Max users to server at any given time will be very low (~10 users max). But the databases are pulling in data from other, outside multiple data sources on a daily basis.

Any pointers to documentation or any advice?

Integration Services :: Perform Lookup On Large Dataset Based On A Small Dataset

Oct 1, 2015

I have a small number of rows in a dataset, Table 1.  There is a CLOB on a large dataset, Table 2.  They join on a PK.  I would like to retrieve this CLOB and add it to the data flow for Table1.  In short I want to emulate the following:

Table 1:  Small table without CLOB, 10 rows.
Table 2: Large table with CLOB, 10,000,000 rows

select CLOB
from table2
where pk = (select pk from table1)

I want this to return the CLOBs for the small number of rows in Table 1.  The PK is indexed obviously so it should be a fast look up.

Table 1 and Table 2 live on different Oracle databases.  How do I perform this operation efficiently in SSIS?  It seems the Lookup and Merge Join wont do this.
