SQL Server 2008 :: Setup Log Shipping From Log Shipped Database?
Mar 20, 2015
We have log shipping for databases from production to back office (BO) environments for users to run reports. In preparation for moving a back office environment to a different server, we want to setup an addition log shipping environment, let’s call it BO2, same as the BO. One of the challenges we had was the amount of time it would take to get the full backup from production to BO2 due to the size of the database. It would take days just to transfer the full backup.
Solution:Let’s just say the database being logged shipped is DB123. Instead of using the full backup of DB123 from production, we use the mdf and ldf of DB123 from current log shipped database on the BO to setup the additional log shipping on BO2.
Steps:1.Setup the directory structure for the undo file (tuf) on the BO2 server same as the BO server.
Note: The undo can be moved to different drive after the log shipping is setup.
2.Stop SQL services on the BO server.
3.Copy the undo file (tuf), mdf, and ldf files of the log shipped database, DB123, from server BO to server BO2.
Note: Keep these files as main copies because they will be used multiple times. Do NOT copy files to where you’ll put the new database files.
4.After the files are copied, start SQL services on BO.
5.On the BO2 server, create an empty database DB123 with database name, file_id, logical names, physical names exactly the same as the ones on the BO server.
Note: Make the size of mdf and ldf small so it doesn’t take long to create the database.
6.Stop SQL Services on the BO2 server.
7.Overwrite the new mdf and ldf files of the empty database DB123 with the mdf and ldf files that were copied over from BO.
8.Start SQL services on BO2.
Note: If the file_id, logical names and physical names are not matching up, the database will be in suspect mode.
9.Do a backup of DB123 with COPY_ONLY.
10.Drop DB123 on BO2 after backup is complete.
11.Use the full backup from previous step to setup log shipping of DB123 on BO2.
Note: Below was the LiteSpeed syntax that was used
exec master.dbo.xp_restore_database @database = N'DB123' ,
@filename = N'F:SQL BackupsDB123_FULL.slsfull',
@filenumber = 1,@with = N'STATS = 10',
@with = N'STANDBY = N''C: MSSQLDataROLLBACK_UNDO_DB123.trn''',
@affinity = 0,@logging = 0
12.Stop SQL services on BO2.
13.Again, overwrite the mdf, ldf and undo file (tuf) of DB123 on server BO2 with mdf, ldf, and undo file (tuf) from BO.
14.Start SQL services on BO2.
15.Replay transaction log from PRD
Note: You can change the location of the undo file by copy the current undo file to the new location and point to new location in “STANDBY” parameter. DO NOT do cut and paste of undo file but do copy and paste.
It works on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4033.0 (X64) . I have not tried it on SQL Server 2012 yet.
In steps that stop/start SQL services, you can bring the database offline/online.
In a way, this is doing detach/attach a log shipped database.

We have a production server "prod" which has a user say 'test' that lets the users connect to the application and a logon trigger which stops them from connecting to the server through SSMS. I log ship 'prod' to the 'rep' database and the user 'test' is obviously created in the logshipped database 'rep' during the logshipping.
Now the login 'test' does not have any login from server 'rep', But people can still login to the 'rep' server and query the 'rep' db . I checked with SUSER_SNAME and found the SID of the user in rep server which I never created and which is not even present in the login names, Even If I create a new username in the 'prod' db, after logshipping the new user is replicated in the 'rep' server.

I have to set up log shipping from Prod server "A" to 2 different DR servers ("B" and "C")...What do i have to do differently (or additional) using the GUI (ie not using Tsql Scripts) to accomplish this, in addition to the steps that are done to log ship to just one DR server?

I have log shipping enabled on databases(primary and secondary) and works fine. I need to implement TDE on the database. I have experience on implementing TDE on databases which are not used for log-shipping.
What are the steps needed to setup TDE which are involved with log-shipping.

Is there any need to re-apply SP4 to sql server 2000 if a user database has been restored to it from a non-service packed sql 2000 server.
We inadvertantly did this after a flood and later realised that the log shipped server at the other site was not not service packed.
Does service pack 4 update user databases in any way?
We have not had any major issues with this but I need to rule this out when considering performance issues and so on that have been raised since the recovery.
Any help would be appreciated.

We're doing upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014. This is blocked due to RS is installed but not configured. Our desired action is to uninstall RS and proceed with the upgrade. But when setuparp.exe is raised, it does not list all the features on the 'Select Features' page. In fact, it only lists the last 2 shared features (SQ Client Connectivity SDK and Microsoft Sync Framework). However, all items appear to be listed on the 'Select Instance' page including RS. I've seen this issue on 2 of our SQL 2008 R2 Servers already.

I am running a SQL 2008r2 install while logged onto the server with a local admin account, not a domain account. I am specifying a domain account to run the SQL service. The install fails saying the service account credentials are invalid but I am 99.9% sure they are right. My theory - the local admin account running Setup cannot validate the service account creds against AD. Is it a requirement to run Setup while logged on with a domain account?

says I need to service pack it right away, but before it gets started
it comes up with the error 'sqlcu.dll failed to load'. Anyone know
what this is all about?
Any ideas?
Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 20 GB SS2005 database that I would like to be replicated to a dev server for testing purposes. I might have some issues with the firewall blocking ports. I haven't read up on the specifics of how log shipping works yet, but I assume that is the best approach. A daily transfer would suffice.
A few options I am considering:
1. use the built in stuff, but I'm not sure it will work with our security settings, and if the trans logs are large it might be strained.
2. writing a small custom app to zip up the log file then ftp them down to the dev server. This could run nightly.
3. some third party util, such as FolderShare could transfer the log files
Any comments or suggestions?

I recently enabled log shipping on our production database, and I had initially accepted the default of 72 hours to delete copied logs. Well, i am running out of space quick, and I need to edit it to something like 6 hours.
When I try to disable log shipping in order to recreate it, or if I try to edit the secondary server settings when I am logged in as SA, or my windows account which has the sysadmin role assigned, I get an error that says:
Only members of the sysadmin fixed server role can perform this operation. Error 21089.
I've restarted the sql service, disabled and enabled the permission on my account, but for the life of me, i cannot get this to work!

Same issue in VS 2005. Using a setup project (or ClickOnce) there seems to be a limit to how large a content file can be. I'm cross-posting in setup and ClickOnce, but thought that other SQL CE developers may have had this issue.
---------------------------------------------------------
I cannot find a reference to this in the online help, and find no answer here. I have some SQL CE databases that are marked as 'content' in a project. One is less than a mb, the other is over 600mb. The larger one will always break the setup build if I leave it marked as content. Also will break a 'clickOnce publish' build.
How does one use the MS Visual Studio tools for setup when a file size is too big?
What is the max file size limitation?
I need to deploy with ClickOnce, but find it difficult to determine the directory that my large file will need to be copied to afterwards since a ClickOnce install uses such a confusing path to install to. So, if the workaround is to fire a script post install, it would be a problem to discover the path for that file to be copied to.-----------------------------------------------------------------

Good Afternoon all,
We just migrated to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 about six months ago. Everything seems went on very well. Database itself and most of our programs which access the database all are working just fine. But recently we encountered a database accessing problem. We have a program which reads database using a login ID and a password. The program works fine when programmer A log onto the server and run it. But when another programmer, say programmer B, log onto the server and try to run the same program with the same login ID and password. Accessing to the database was denied. Both programmer A and B have the same Database Adminstrator privilege. What did we do wrong is setting up the database? Can any of you help us solving the mystery? Thanks. Happy Holiday.

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:
"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".
I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.
The most puzzling to me things are:
- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).
- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".
During installation before failing the setup displays following:
"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.
Thanks.

Hello Everyone,
I am new to the creation of SQL Servers and databases, I have only use SQL statements in code in the past, and I have encountered a problem in my first SQL Server 2000 setup...
I am trying to setup a database in SQL Server 2000 called Equipment, which will contain multiple tables corresponding to the names of different equipment being used. I am able to create that just fine, but my problem occurs when I try to create login names for that database. For the database to correctly interface with another program already in use I need two login names, "Equip" that has full access and "Equip_ReadOnly" that is unable to delete, insert, or update. The problem is that I wish for those two login names to be accessing the same tables within the database, so that any changes made by Equip will be seen by Equip_ReadOnly. However, when I try to do this I end up with two sets of tables, one owned by Equip and the other owned by Equip_ReadOnly.
I am able to accomplish what I want in SQL Server 2005 by using the dbo schema to contain the tables and then have Equip and Equip_ReadOnly as users of the dbo schema, but for this project I am unable to use SQL Server 2005. So far I have been unable to figure out how to accomplish this task using SQL Server Enterprise Manager. So, does anyone have any ideas or insight into this particular problem? I am stuck at the moment and any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
P.S. If this was the wrong forum to post this question in, please point me to the correct forum. Thanks Again.

Not able to install SQL Express 2005.

Needles to say, above link is useless..
I had managed to install previously, but ran into problems while trying to upsize an MS-Access database, I've tried everything from creating certificate to hacking away at the registry...Log-on with a different account, etc...Anybody knows how to get around this?

I had to to relocate the database log file and I issued an Alter database command but by mistake I put a space in the file name as below. The space is at the beginning file name. Now I am unable get the database loaded to SQL Server. The database has 2 replications configured, so deleting and re-attaching the database means the replication needs to be re-configured. Is there an alternative way to issue a command to update the database FILENAME ? Not sure if this can be edited in master database (sys files).
ALTER DATABASE [User_DB]
MODIFY FILE (NAME = User_DB_log, FILENAME = 'I:SQLLogs User_DB_log.ldf')

I found this script online..
SELECT prin.[name] [User], sec.state_desc + ' ' + sec.permission_name [Permission]
FROM [sys].[database_permissions] sec
JOIN [sys].[database_principals] prin
ON sec.[grantee_principal_id] = prin.[principal_id]
WHERE sec.class = 0
ORDER BY [User], [Permission];
but the results are this: 2 columns - User and Permission
User Permission
User1 GRANT CONNECT
User2 GRANT CONNECT
IS there a way in SQL Server (2005/2008/2012) to run a script against a Database that will show all users that have permissions to that Database and the type of permissions?

1. The title of this post says it all. My app will have a very small footprint to down load. I don't want to user to have to download 50 + MB just to try my little $15 app:-) So
QUESTION 1 - Will SQL Express be in the Vista bits? If so which versions?
2. Once SQLExpress is installed by whatever means, are there rules about how the instance is used? I have no problems playing well with others so I would be more than happy to create my DB in .SQLExpress.
QUESTION 2 - Are there any rules governing who can play in the Express instance? How should dtabases should be named to avoid collisions with the other kids?
3. I'd love to be able to work in in ClickOnce / user never has to have admin password environment.
QUESTION 3 - Besides UAC are there any constraints on writing to a properly installed Express instance that would get in the way of a pure user application from using the basic instance.
4. Right now - because I can't read directions and still don't understand the smoke and mirrors in VS 2005 when it comes to dealing with databases - I have DDL in my program that allows me to create my database from scratch. Not sure that this is the right way to go.
QUESTION 4. What is the best way for an user software to create its database in an instance of SQL Express.
5. SQL Express is yet another thingie that will run in the background that the typical user won't understand and wont' give a hoot about.
QUESTION 5. Can I / should I programmatically worry about whether the service is up and running? If so how do I launch it.
I know this is a lot for a single post, but it all sort of hangs together.
Regard,
Al Christoph

I am wondering what would be the best disk/RAID setup for a Windows server 2008 R2 OS and SQL Server 2012 database that has heavy read/write. I have the following disks I can use:
4x 15k 146GB
2x 10k 600GB
According to the server build requirements for the application, I need 100GB for the OS and 290GB for the drive containing the SQL mdf there are no stated requirements for the ldf, but would like to know if it should be allocated elsewhere?I should do RAID 10 for the 15k drives for SQL and RAID 1 for the OS on the 10k.
