Queries against DMVs like sys.dm_XXX causing blocking in user databases? I have never read that querying DMVs has caused blocking in user databases but that question recently came up in my environment.
View 5 RepliesWe have a SQL Server 2008R2 system that has heavy usage to one specific table. I have tuned basically all I can as far as making sure SQL Statements are using good indexes. From time to time a group of folks will log into Mgt Studio and run SQL Statements like this, leave the query open and once in a while it will cause blocking to other SQL running our online system
The query is like this: select ID,* from tablename with (nolock) where ID like 'MSPRYy%'
The results come back within less than 1 second. However, they leave this window open which is what causes this to be a HEAD BLOCKER and blocks other SQL Statements from running.
I see some time email say blocking took place and but it get resolved itself. how to find the history of batch/query which blocked another SPID?

2.Is it OK to set the Recovery model of Database MODEL as SIMPLE ? at the moment it is in FULL recovery model and the transaction log is Full too
In the notification tab of job properties, I can see three options in the drop down list at the right hand side.

In which system table these options are saved ? Is it possible to add a custom option in that dropdown list.
I have a well-structured but also very large binary data-set that is generated by a C++ application every five minutes. The data needs to be accessed by SQL applications. Since data is generated every five minutes, performance is key, both for write and read. The data set is about 500MB.If data is written to the file system, the write performance doesn't involve SQL server. For reading it, I have a CLR to read the portions of the data that I need based on offset and length. That works and is very fast. The problem is that data is stored in the file system, so it is not self-contained within the database.
A second option that I haven't explored yet, is to write the data into a table as VARBINARY(MAX). I would read the data using SUBSTRING with appropriate offset and length. Performance of SQL write/read of binary data of this size, and whether there is a third option I haven't thought off. I'm using SQL Server 2014.
I am wondering where the DMVs are stored? In tempdb? or resourcebd? or somewhere else?

My current understanding is that most, if not all dmv's are dynamic in that if a server is rebooted than the information gathered from the dmv's will be reset. What happens if the mirror instance fails over (manually or because of a hardward/software issue)? Does the failover of the principal to the mirror node cause the a resetting of the dmvs?

So I need to write a script to look for available free space percentage in my databases, but I only want it to look at capped files. We consider a file with autogrowth off as capped for our purposes.
This is my problem: in sys.database_files and sys.master_files, if I have autogrowth off then max_size is -1, which is the same value as unlimited growth.
I cannot find another setting anywhere to determine how SQL Server recognizes that a particular file is set to not allow autogrowth. Any setting in a DMV anywhere where I can see whether autogrowth is disabled or not?
Historically I've always written a VB script to copy a file from a sharepoint library. I don't like this method because I have to input a username & password in the script and maintain a config file.
Yesterday I was playing around with using a file system task. The sharepoint file has a UNC path so why not? I created a simple test package with a single file system task that copies the sharepoint file (addressed via UNC) to another network location. Package runs fine locally.
I try running on our utility server but am getting a "The file name [SHAREPOINT UNC PATH] specified in the connection was not valid" error. Package is running with a proxy on the server and the proxy account has the same permissions to the sharepoint site (so far as I can tell) as me.

I cannot find this info anywhere. We have Hyperion 8.x running against SQL 2000. We will upgrade side-by-side in the coming weeks. It appears that Hyperion 8.x is assured to continue to work without issue with a 2K5 database in 80 compatibility level.
I have seen the BOL table on differences between 80 and 90 (specifically affects us - WITH on Index hints), but what I wonder are about 3 specific features.
1. Do you still get DMV capabilities in 80 mode? (I ran a test on sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats for an 80 compat DB, creating index and using query to hit index, and yes - it does look as if this DMV does get populated).
2. Can you still Table Partition in 80 mode? (Ran a test in DEV, and yes - this does look possible - any gotchas?)
3. Does the optimizer behave quite differently in 80 mode?
I have tested in DEV moving a DB from 80 to 90 and back, and this seems to work with no problems.

I have a powerbuilder application that is connecting to SQL Server. We get very frequent DeadLock situations. Is there a way that I can check to see as what SQL is causing the Lock?

I have w2k enterprise sql server with 2k3 windows enterprise. 180 users connects and runs video editing system. user connection value of Sql server:General Statistics is about 1400.
I upgraded my hardware from 4X xeon 2.2ghz. server to 8XAMD opteron dual core CPUs server system.
after this upgrade, in the day time (I mean work hours), sql server service is hanging or blocking randomly. there is no lock,no cpu load. during this blocking period, I can connect to server via remote desktop, whne I checked the disks, I can read data from disk. There is no error or warning in the events before the blocking time. In this period I can not login but if a user has already logged in he/she can run some queries in the begining of the period, but after 2-3 minutes nobody can run any query.
Do you have any idea about the reason or any suggestion to trace?

Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?

I've recently noticed some strange behaviour with sql server 2000 spid's blocking themselves. The spid will appear to be blocked for short periods of time, and then the block will disappear. I'm not sure how this could occur. It started appearing around the same time as I applied SP4.
If anyone could provide any insight into this, it would be greatly appreciated.

ReportServer.dbo.GetSessionData;1 is blocked by ReportServer.dbo.WriteLockSession;1

I have trying to access a 2nd SQL Server instances running on my WHS 2011 server from my Windows 8.1 Pro client.
The first SQL Server instance I installed is SQL Server 2014 Developer. This has been in place for many months and access from my client pc is not a problem. The Developer instance was installed using standard settings so uses TCP port 1433 and I have verified this by checking the firewall rules. This instance name is <SERVERNAME>
As I want to host a personal website on my server I installed SQL Server 2014 Express as a 2nd instance on my WHS 2011 box for website database purposes. After this installation both instances are accessible via Management Console on the WHS 2011 box.Â
The second instance is named as <SERVERNAME>SQLEXPRESS.
However, I am unable to access the SQLEXPRESS instance using Management Console on my client pc. I know it is a firewall issue as when I turn off the firewall on the WHS 2011 box I can connect successfully. The errors reported have resulted in my trying many things to resolve the problem but none have worked, e.g.
Use the default SQLEXPRESS instance to listen on all TCP ports (default installation option). I checked the necessary firewall rules were set up correctly and they were, i.e. UDP ANY and TCP ANY for the SQLEXPRESS sqlservr.exe file.
Change the default SQLEXPRESS instance to list on a specific TCP port, e.g. 19344
Create an ALIAS for the SQLEXPRESS installation
The instance is definitely set up for Remote Access and is not Hidden.
Are there any other firewall rules I need to apply?

I was not sure, why the create procedure statement is blocking the update statement.
We have a hosted server with a website and sql server 2008 on.
The windows firewall is turned on for all networks / profiles and says its blocking incoming traffic.
I see a lot of login attempts in the windows logs where hackers are trying to connect to it. I can also access it via SSMS from multiple external ips.
Everywhere I've googled says that incoming traffic should be blocked by default by the firewall.
There are no obvious rules that allow SSMS access.
If I do a blocking rule on inbound rules for a single ip that does work, blocking it from that ip, but any other ip's can still connect.
In the firewall log file I can see the allowed connections on port 1433 etc. other than the dropped one from the test blocking rule.
Any ideas how I can I block telnet connections to SQL Server ports ?

We have now twice had an incident where the same SQL Server has stopped responding. The only workaround is to restart the SQL Service. After this occurs, the log is filled with the following messages:

We haven't been able to pinpoint a cause or reporduce the problem on a dev server. I've seen several posts about this issue online but not many answers. Does anyone have any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue?

There are a few features in the new SQL Server - Reporting Services that I really need in production. I have tested everything and it works great. I am running the CTP version since Microsoft is saying they aren't releasing the release version until 3rd quarter 2008.
Since Microsoft won't sell SQL 2008 until 3rd quarter, can I run the CTP in production until the release and then purchase SQL 2008?

Hello - does anyone have experience w/SQL Server 2005 in a virtual environment? I'm considering this for a production environment but not sure if performance will suffer. Our databases will have a lot of writing but not too much reading. A SSRS solution is currently the only app. connecting to the SQL db. Max users to server at any given time will be very low (~10 users max). But the databases are pulling in data from other, outside multiple data sources on a daily basis.
Any pointers to documentation or any advice?

I have a sql snippet from a 3rd party application that will not complete its transaction. The SELECT statement executes but does not finish. Instead the statement just sits in AWAITING COMMAND for 1000 seconds then dies, thus killing the UPDATE statement that is supposed to follow.
The CROSS JOIN and CROSS APPLY seem suspect.

Recently, I set up server with Windows Web Server 2008 RC1, SQL 2008 Express beta, .NET 3.5, IIS 7.
I'm running ASP.NET web application with SQL database. Everything works fine until the first application state on the server expires. After that, any postback that starts a new application state on the server and connects to the database, results in the following error:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
Is this a bug that will be fixed in release of Windows / SQL or am I doing something wrong?

I simply replaced the 2005 file €œSQLEXPR.EXE€? with the 2008 file €œ€?, recompiled the installation and tested only for it to fail. I than read the 2008 books online and noted the change in command line options.

I then changed the command line to suit the Microsoft 2008 books online, recompiled the installation and tested only for it to fail once more.
Interestingly I tested the install from the default GUI and at the point of adding the €œsa€? login credentials it fails to allow the installation to proceed. Strangely by selecting the windows authentication credentials, €œnext€? than €œback€? it now allows me to add the €œsa€? login credentials and continues to install correctly as required.
I hope I have explained this clearly enough.

2. If so is this causing the command line install options to fail?

when i go to http://servername/reports , the UIlogon.aspx page loads fine and i enter username and password. but i get logon failed.
when i go to http://servername/reportserver , the logon.aspx does not load and i get the following error message :

One sql transaction is in rollback state and optimization job is trying to restructure index on the same table that this transaction is using. As a result,
transaction is in 'blocking' state and optimization job is in 'blocked' state. 'Kill process' doesn't do anything. How can this situation be resolved?
Is it possible that blocking can occur between a select and update statements running at the same time on the same object??thanks for the reply!

Anyone out there having "self blocking" issues since upgrading to SP4 on SQL 2000? Enabing trace flag 9059 has not helped, is this a parallelism issue ?
