SQL Server 2008 :: Table Type And Open RowSet

Feb 5, 2015

I'm trying to store the output of my stored procedure into a temp table, which takes Table Type as Input.

CREATE TYPE [dbo].[Employee] AS TABLE(
[Field] [varchar](50) NULL,
[Criteria] [varchar](50) NULL,
[Value] [varchar](50) NULL
)
declare @Employee dbo.Employee
insert into @Employee values(N'Salary',N'is greater than',N'3520')

DECLARE @sql NVARCHAR(MAX)

SET @sql = 'SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(''SQLNCLI'',''Server=localhost;Trusted_Connection=yes;'',''EXEC dbo.uspGetEmployee ' + @Employee + ')'

I need to create a stored procedure which uses output of the above stored procedure. Hence, I don't want to put declare and insert into OPENROWSET as I get those values as parameter to the new procedure.

Any other solution instead of using OpenRowSet.

SQL Server 2012 :: Open Rowset With Non CSV Or TXT Extension

Jul 18, 2014

My goal is to have a file (it comes from another system) that I want to import via an OPENROWSET style query.

The query would look like this:

select [NoName] from openrowset('MSDASQL'
,'Driver={Microsoft Access Text Driver (*.txt, *.csv)};
DefaultDir=c:filedir'
,'select * from "file.lst"')

If I make the file a .csv it works fine. However, if it has a not CSV or TXT extension it throws the following error and cannot seem to find a solution to it.

OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Text Driver] Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.". Msg 7350, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Cannot get the column information from OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)".

In addition, (although I can probably find this elsewhere), I need to have the first line 'BLANK' so that it does not miss data (there is no header row). Is there a way to use OPENROWSET without BULK to basically include all rows as data?

In OLEDB Destination, AccessMode as OpenRowset Using FastLoad raises the following error:

db_object exists in the database. Is there any key point for the table or view used for fastload?

SQL Server 2008 :: Adding Columns To Table Type?

Jul 24, 2015

Is there a good way to add columns to a table type?

I built several procs which make use of table-valued-parameters, and they work pretty nicely, until I need them to accept additional columns. Then I have to drop all the procs that use them, alter the types, and rebuild all the procedures, which is a huge pain in the rear.

Is there any good way (built in, or custom) to alter the def of a table type that's used as a parameter to multiple stored procedures?

SQL Server 2008 :: Cannot Open New SSIS Project

Nov 2, 2012

I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2008. However, after several installations and un-installations. I could no longer use the SSIS to create New Projects. I cleaned out the registry with a Registry cleaner from Wise. I deleted the SQL Server and Visual Studio folders as well.

When I create a New SSIS Project, I immediately get an error as follows:

"Microsoft Visual Studio"
"An error prevented the view from loading."
"Additional information:"
"Specified Module cannot be Found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)"

What this means is that I cannot create any new SSIS Projects.

SQL Server 2008 :: Unable To Open Database File (MDF)

May 6, 2015

I have a SQL Server 2005 database file (a .mdf file) that I am trying to open in SQL Server Management Studio so I can add a field to a table, but I am unable to open the file. I can't say that I really understand how SQL Server handles these databases. I especially don't understand the "attaching" and "detaching" operations.

I am working in VB.Net 2008 now, but my background is with VB6 using the JET engine. It was just so straightforward using the JET engine, but seems so much more complicated with SQL Server. I am trying to use .mdf files the same way I used .mdb files. I want my application to find the database file, "attach to it", and let me manipulate it.

At one time I was able to open my database in Sql Server Management Studio and edit the design of the database. The application still works but I am no longer able to modify the database because I cannot attach to it in Management Studio.

Here is a big clue: the files are no longer in the special folder anymore, which is c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATA. I might have deleted the files, stupidly, thinking they were redundant. I still have the .mdf file (and the _log.ldf file) on my hard drive and the application can still open it, but when I try to use Management Studio to attach to the .mdf file, I get this error:

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

An error occurred when attaching the database(s). Click the hyperlink in the Message column for details.

here are the details:

Unable to open the physical file "c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATAHEALSExamsSQL.mdf". Operating system error 2: "2(The system cannot find the file specified.)". (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

Indeed the file is not there, but why is Mgmt Studio looking there? Why doesn't it just open the file where it is? What can I do to get it back? I even copied the files to c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATA? I get the same error.

Here is another clue: In Management Studio, when I right-click Databases, and chose Attach, it brings up a dialog. There I click "Add" to get another dialog in which I will select a database, but before the dialog appears I get this error:

Locate Database Files - KURANT-WIN7SQLEXPRESS
C:UsersJason KurantDesktop
Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists.

If you know that the service account can access a specific file, type in the full path for the file in the File Name control in the Locate dialog box.

SQL Server 2008 :: Data Type Of Calculated Fields

Aug 10, 2015

I'm using the SQL below to work out recruitment figures. The query works well, but I now need to build this query into a DotNet application as a webpage. I therefore need to declare and manipulate the values such as 'Total', 'Jan' to 'Dec' and 'YearRecruited' in order to write these values into my chosen data control. I therefore need to know the datatypes of these calculated values.

Total I think is straightforward as DNAScreeningID is an int datatype. But what about the others?

SELECT YEAR(SamplingDate) AS YearRecruited,

COUNT(CASE WHEN month(SamplingDate) = 1 THEN DNAScreeningID END) AS 'Jan',
COUNT(CASE WHEN month(SamplingDate) = 2 THEN DNAScreeningID END) AS 'Feb',

SQL Server 2008 :: Size Limitation For XML Data Type?

Oct 7, 2015

I've never worked with the XML data type in SQL Server, although I know its been there for a few iterations of SQL SErver. Now I've got a situation in which it might store some configuration data as XML, since that's the way it comes. (We had thought about storing the data in a VARCHAR(MAX) field.)

The first question is does the XML data type have a size limitation? For example do you do something like:

ConfigFile XML(1000) NULL

Or is it just something like this:

ConfigFile XML NULL

The second question is persisting the data to a file. As the name I choose for the variable suggests, we want to save the data from a configuration file into a SQL Server database. How do we go about doing that? We'll be developing a C# application, it will read and write the data both from the SQL table and the user's local HD.

SQL Server 2008 :: Allow Null On Data Type Money?

Oct 15, 2015

Should data type money allow nulls? Are there valid arguments both pro and con?

Yes, there is the age-old question regarding how one might interpret a NULL found in any column - does it mean the amount is not known or that the amount is zero (in the case of a numeric type)? You get the drift...

Other than that, though - are there any practical considerations an old data hound ought to be aware of?

Can't Open My SQL CE Database After Upgrade To VS 2008

May 10, 2008

I've just upgraded my app from .Net 2.0 in VS 2005 to 3.5 in VS 2008, but now I can't open my SQL CE database any more. It falls over on the connection.Open() method, saying I need to run Compact /Repair if this is 3.0 or 3.1 version database (which it is, or was). So I run the compact/repair (full compaction) and it doesn't help at all. I also tried running the upgrade.exe tool that comes with SQL Server CE, but when I try to run it from the command line, it tells me it can't run in Win32 mode! I didn't think it was! Does that mean I can only run it from a DOS prompt before loading the OS or something? There's something on MSDN that says you can upgrade by opening a connection to the CE database in Server explorer and then you'll get a dialog that will upgrade the database for you. But that doesn't happen - it just happily connects. Anyone know what the hell is going on here?

Update: I just noticed in the excpetion message that the "requested version" is 3004180, i.e., it seems to be asking for a 3.0 version database and getting a 3.5 version one, but I can't work out why. Here's the exception, with stack trace etc snipped:

System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException was unhandled
Message="You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition database. If this is a SQL Server CE 1.0 or 2.0 database, run upgrade.exe. Cannot Open Table In SQL Server Enterprise Manager

Nov 6, 2000

When do right click on the table in SQL EM and select Open Table | Return all rows, get Error:
An unexpected error happened during this operation. [Query]- Query Designer encountered a query error: unspecified error.

It's happening on all tables, all databases, all protocols, all servers, on 2(!) of 3 installations of SQL EM. I can successfully run Select in Query Analyser against the same servers/dababases.

Today is the first day it started. I cannot recall anything particular I've done on Friday that can cause this.

Thanks

Cannot Open Table In SQL Server Enterprise Manager

Oct 24, 2005

I recently installed SQL 2000, runing on a Win2000 Server. If I try to use Enterprise Manager to open a table using the return rows command, I get the following error

"An unpected error happened during this operation"

Reinstalling the client Tools has not helped.

Any help would be appreciated.
