SQL Server 2008 :: Tables Not Shown In Articles Window Of New Publication Wizard

May 26, 2015

We have restored a database on new server without keeping replication settings. Now while creating the publication no tables are shown in new publication wizard window. In fact we have hundred of tables in database and included in replication on source server from where backup was taken.

What may be the reason that tables are not appearing?

Problem With Publication Articles Being Deleted

Sep 15, 2006

I wonder if anyone can advise, I currently have a replication set to 5 offices. Which has been working fine for some 18 months+, then the replication dropped out. When I looked in the publisher it had lost all its articles and would not allow me to add back in. I deleted the publication and recreated it and then after creating a new snapshot starting rolling back out to the various locations, and one of the locations failed and again all the articles where lost. I deleted and rebuilt the database at that office and went through the same routine again, only for it to happen again, the issue being that now errors where produced!!!.

So at present I have the publication and all the subscriptions running apart from this one office.

Has anyone had this before, or any ideas. I have run a full virus scan just in case and it was fine.

The Maximum Number Of Articles Allowed In A Merge Publication Is 246.

Jun 4, 2007

Has anyone had problems with this limitation before or could explain to me what the purpose of this limit is for? It obviously does allow you to publish more than 246 (we have been publishing more than 700 for years). Is this new with SQL 2005? Is my publication going to stop one day and tell me there are too many articles?

Thanks in advance.

SQL 2012 :: Adding Articles To Existing Publication In Transactional Replication

Sep 26, 2014

I have an existing publication in sql 2012 with 2 articles, and then I add 2 more articles. After that when I generate a snapshot, will the snapshot be generated for 2 new articles only or for all 4 articles?

I remember adding 1 new articles to one existing publication with 150 articles and when I generated snapshot, it was generated only for 1 article. But I don't remember clearly.

Does it behave differently for small and large number of articles?

SQL Server 2008 :: Replication Articles Read-only AND Updateable At Same Time

Apr 21, 2015

We have many users with a mobile application running SQL Mobile and using merge replication to get data back to the SQL 2008 R2 database. This has worked very well for many years.

We now have a requirement to have this data reported on using Reporting Services. This is where it gets messy.

Due to a limitation of Report Builder(see this blog) we cannot provide access to users for creating their own reports. The report database is remote from the host and there is no VPN.

We hit upon the idea of creating an almost identical publication but the articles as read-only. It was only after this was done that we started having trouble with our existing mobile users.

It seems that a published article is EITHER Bi-directional OR Read-only even if they are in separate publications.

I then thought of using Transactional Publication but this too is blocked on creation with "automatic identity range support is useful only for publications that allow updating subscribers"(Merge and Transactional publication are mutually exclusive)

So in the final analysis is there a way for me to have merge replication AND some other form of SQL replication/data transfer that can have the same data transmitted readonly to a separate full SQL server database?

SQL Server 2008 :: Temporarily Stop Replication / What To Do When Publication Is Dropped

Aug 12, 2015

I have transactional replication configured where the publisher and subscriber are on two different servers. Yesterday a database upgrade was carried out, and the DBA dropped replication by issuing sp_removedbreplication on the published database. The subscription is still set up.

I have two questions:

1 - What is the safest way to temporarily switch off replication without losing the publication or subscription? As far as I was aware (my replication knowledge isn't great), simply disabling the relevant agents would do the job.

2 - I now have the task of creating the publication again (fortunately we have a saved script). If I recreate this publication, will I be able to point the existing subscription at it?

SQL Server 2008 :: Initialize Transactional Publication From Backup Loss Of Data

Mar 18, 2015

I have automated process, which synchronizes a transactional publication using initialize from backup approach. It drops subscriptions and puts them back again once the restore on the subscriber is completed.

Dropping the subscriptions causes a lot of blocking and deadlocking. I've decided to remove those steps, but it causes loss of data on the subscriber.

Is it a must to drop and re-create the subscriptions during such process? If not, how can I avoid the loss of data?

for this task i installed iis, sql server 2005 std. and the sql server mobile tools.

i created a dedicated user for making snapshots in the new created and functionable publication, but when i start the web sync wizard, i alwas get the failurmessages

snapshot share "......" cannot be accessed, please specify a new share

the access permissions based on the share an based on the ntfs area are set right.

the user, i chose for the anonymus access (the same, as for creating snapshots), has enough rights on the folder. also when creating a new share, with different share name, and using another user for anonymus access (standard iusr_machine_name) i get the same message

Can Not Delet A Publication In SQL Server 2005: The Publication Does Not Exist [SQL Server Error: 20026]

I tried to use sp_droppublication, it gave me error "the database is not enabled for publication". Copy Database Wizard Fails From 2008 To 2014 Server?

Apr 8, 2015

I am trying to migrate a 2008 R2 (SP1) database with one secondary data file to a separate 2014 server using the Copy Database Wizard from the 2014 server, and connect to both SQL engines on that server. It consistently fails on step 5. I'm logging to a text file and the error I see is as follows:

InnerException-->Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.

StackTrace: at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection, Action`1 wrapCloseInAction)

I created a test database on the same 2008 server, also with a secondary data file, and it migrated flawlessly using the CDW. I am using the copy object method in all cases, and not the detach/attach method.

I would prefer to perform this without any downtime on the source (production) database.

Articles In More Than One Category - How To Organize Tables?

Jun 10, 2005

Greetings,I have one table, named Article, and one table name Category.The problem is, one Article could be in just one or in several categories.What is the best way to connect data between Article and Category according to fast search performance?I have several ideas:1. To have third cross table Article_Category with fields Article_ID and Category_ID, and search Article_Category table 2. To have several INTEGER columns in Article table (like Category_ID1, Category_ID2,..) and search those columns3. Add one VARCHAR field in Article table where I could write Category ID's delimited by some character (e.g. by comma), and do text search in only that column.What is recommended for solving problems like this?

Import And Export Wizard: Transferring Multiple Tables From SQL Server 2005 To SQL Server 2000

Jun 15, 2007

Hi!

I just used the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy 50+ tables from SS05 to SS2K.

I found that the wizard created a package that I could not figure out how to edit, e.g., to change whether or not it had to CREATE a table, or just use an existing one. (I created some problems by manually editing the receiving table names to be ones that already existed -- but the original names it had did not exist, so it knew it had to create them. What I should have done, and eventually ended up doing, was scroll through my list of tables in the "receiving" box; I just figured editing the name would be faster, not realizing what problems I would create for myself.)

Anyhow, now that I see the complex package that the wizard creates, with a LOOP over the 50+ tables, I would like to know how/where in the package it is storing the information about the tables to copy.

Basically the wizard creates the following Control Flow tab entries (in processing sequence order):

an Execute SQL Task: NonTransactableSql
an Execute SQL Task: START TRANSACTION
a Sequence Container: Transaction Scoping Sequence, which contains
an Execute SQL Task: AllowedToFailPrologueSql
an Execute SQL Task: PrologueSql
a Foreach Loop Container, which contains
a Transfer Task with an icon I did not notice in the Toolbox
an Execute Package Task: Execute Inner Package
an Execute SQL Task: EpilogueSql
an "on success" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: COMMIT TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: PostTransaction Sql
an "on failure" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: CompensatingSql

Where, and how, can I look within this package to see the details about the tables I am transferring? I see that one of the Connection Managers is "TableSchema.XML" -- but it points to a temporary file on my hard drive, that I presume is populated by the package. Where does it get its information?

This is certainly much more complex than the package I would have written, based on my limited knowledge of SSIS. I would have been inclined to create 50+ Data Flow tasks, one for each table.

So now I'm trying to understand why the Wizard created this more-complex package.

Any help will be appreciated, including references to non-Microsoft books/websites/etc.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Importing Data From Oracle 8i/9i To SQL Server 2005 Using SQL Server Import And Export Wizard (AKA DTS Wizard)

Oct 20, 2006

Hi All,

I have become frustrated and I am not finding the answers I expect.

Here's the gist, we support both Oracle and SQL for our product and we would like to migrate our Clients who are willing/requesting to go from Oracle to SQL. Seems easy enough.

So, I create a Database in SQL 2005, right click and select "Import Data", Source is Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle and I setup my connection. so far so good.

I create my Destination for SQL Native Client to the Database that I plan on importing into. Still good

Next, I select "Copy data from one or more tables or views". I move on to the next screen and select all of the Objects from a Schema. These are Tables that only relate to our application or in other words, nothing Oracle System wise.

When I get to the end it progresses to about 20% and then throws this error about 300 or so times:

Could not connect source component.
Warning 0x80202066: Source - AM_ALERTS [1]: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. If the component does not support the property, the code page from the component's locale ID will be used.

So, I'm thinking "Alright, we can search on this error and I'm sure there's an easy fix." I do some checking and indeed find out that there is a property setting called "AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage" in the OLEDB Data Source Properties. Great! I go back and look at the connection in the Import and .... there's nothing with that property!

Back to the drawing board. I Create a new SSIS package and figure out quickly that the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage is in there. I can transfter information from the Oracle Source Table to the SQL Server 2005 Destination Table, but it appears to be a one to one thing. Programming this, if I get it to work at all, will take me about 150 hours or so.

This make perfect sense if all you are doing is copying a few columns or maybe one or two objects, but I am talking about 600 + objects with upwards of 2 million rows of data in each!!

This generates 2 questions:
1. If the Import Data Wizard cannot handle this operation on the fly, then why can't the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage property be shown as part of the connection
2. How do I create and SSIS Package that will copy all of the data from Oracle to SQL Server? The source tables have been created and have the same Schema and Object Names as the Source. I don't want to create a Data Flow Task 600 times.

Help!!!

How To Connect To Sql Server As Other's Window Login Rather Than User's Window Login Thorugh ASP.NET.

Dec 14, 2006

Dear members,

In MSDN, it says that it is recommended to use windows authentication to connect to SQL Server rather than use mixed authentication.

I create user deltasqluser on windows OS, and I specify in my webform ASP.NET script below :

protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label Label1;
private string _connString = @"data source=deltasql2000;initial catalog=northwind;integrated security=false;user id=deltasqluser";
/*
comment : I login to my windows as deltakoronx, and I want to every user (including me), connected to sql server through IIS, will be identified as deltasqluser not as user's login (impersonate)
*/
private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(_connString);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
cmd.Connection = conn;
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "select suser_sname()";

conn.Open();

string userName = cmd.ExecuteScalar() as string;
conn.Close();
conn.Close();
Label1.Text = userName;
}

at web.config, I add :
<identity impersonate="false" userName="deltasqluser" password="" />

at IIS webApplication1's properties, tab "Directory Security", at "Authentication and access control" section, I checked "enable anonymous access" with user : DELTAIUSR_DELTA and checked "Integrated Windows Authentication",

at query analyzer, I login as "sa" and execute script below :
exec sp_grantdbaccess 'deltasqluser','northwind'

when I run the ASP.NET script, error at conn.Open(); with error message :
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.

What should I do so that IIS login to SQL Server as user deltasqluser not as "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" ?

Koronx

SQL2000: Disable Trigger Not Allowed In Tables That Involved In Publication.

Apr 10, 2007

We have setup a replication in SQL2000:

We have DTS package automatically pouring data into the publishing database(source tables). During this process, we want to temporary disable certain triggers. However, the command

Alter table 'tbl' disable trigger 'abc' errored out. The error message said:

''Cannot alter the table 'tbl' because it is being published for replication."

I've digged more into this and found although it's not allowed to disable a triggers,

the SQLServer do allow delete the trigger and recreate them.

Is there any way to disable the trigger directly?

Thanks in advance,

Don

BTW:

I've used the following sql directly, however the trigger still fires.

UPDATE
sysobjects
SET
status = status|2048
WHERE
type = 'TR'
AND
parent_obj = OBJECT_ID (@table_name)

The only other way around now is to create stored procedures that dynamically create the trigger. Because our trigger is normmally larger than 8000 bytes. We have to create one stored procedure per trigger. This option is not acceptable because not only it takes quite a time, but also a maintainance nightmare.

Storing Articles In SQL Server

Oct 25, 2007

Hello Everyonen and thanks for your help in advance.  I am developing a conetnet management system to allow for the storage of articles within a SQL Server 2000 database.  I am using FreeTextBox as the editor for users to enter articles.  I ahve two questions.  First, many of the articles are quite lengthy and including HTML formatting go well beyond 8000 characters.  How should I go about storing these articles?  Should I use a TEXT datatype, or perhaps split the data into more than one row.  This leads to my second quuestion.  Many sites that display article type data break the artilce into multiple pages with page numbers or next links to page back and forth.  I am not sure hot to go about implmeneting this.  Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
