SQL Server 2008 :: Virtual Server Disk Configuration?

Mar 14, 2011

I have been tasked with moving our SQL server estate onto new 64bit SQL 2008 Virtual servers on a VM base. Each Virtual server will be attached to our SAN that i will have no control over. Do i ask for multiple LUNs pretending that there is a COS), Etemp), FData) and Glog) disk structure or do I just present a very big space as a single C: drive and let it go.We are consolidating lots of old physical servers onto fewer (more powerful) virtual servers (according to the VM and SAN administrators)

1. Configure your SAN properly

2. Don't overallocate shared resource

Seeking Advice: SQL Server On Win 2008 Virtual Server Or Just Win 2008?

Apr 23, 2008

Hello - does anyone have experience w/SQL Server 2005 in a virtual environment? I'm considering this for a production environment but not sure if performance will suffer. Our databases will have a lot of writing but not too much reading. A SSRS solution is currently the only app. connecting to the SQL db. Max users to server at any given time will be very low (~10 users max). But the databases are pulling in data from other, outside multiple data sources on a daily basis.

Any pointers to documentation or any advice?

Thanks,

A Brown

Optimized SQL Server Disk Configuration

Jan 18, 2008

I have a question concerning where to put certain database files for the followinig RAID configurations. The server has 2 RAID configs: 2 hds in a RAID 1 and 4 hds in a RAID 10. The server will host 4 database instances: A replicated db, a Reporting Services db (which technically constitutes 2 db instances) and an application db.
In order to get the best performance, should I put the OS, SQL binary and log files on the RAID 1 config with the data and tempdb on the RAID 10? If not, please explain the best solution. Thank you!

SQL Server 2008 :: Virtual Log Files And Determining Right Growth Size

Oct 14, 2015

Any good starting point to understand for a specific db, how many max VLFs are good to have so that it does not cause long startup or backup times?

Also, I need some calculation so that I can identify a best growth parameter I will setup for each database ?

I'm seeing the below msg in errorlog and curious to know the changes (right sizing/growth) to be done? As of now 100 MB of log file growth value is set (refer: [URL] ....)

Database BizTalkMsgBoxDb has more than 1000 virtual log files which is excessive. Too many virtual log files can cause long startup and backup times. Consider shrinking the log and using a different growth increment to reduce the number of virtual log files.

SQL Server 2008 :: Which Node Should Ordinarily Own Quorum Disk

May 25, 2015

Quick question re a 2008 failover cluster with Node and Disk Majority:

Under healthy conditions does it matter which node owns the Quorum disk?

My understanding was that the quorum disk should be owned by the active node, in the same way that it owns the active data/log disks?

I've just finished off setting up a cluster and noticed that the quorum seems to want to be held by the passive node.

I've attempted to move it to the active node but nothing seems to happen.

SQL Server 2008 Installation - Server Configuration Problem

May 18, 2008

I have got problems with installation of a default instance on SQL Server 2008 on Vista Home Premium. During the step of Server Configuration you should enter UserName and password for each service. I do not know what user name to type. I tried every possible combination but the outcome is always the same - after typing usernames and passwords, installation suddenly fails without casting any exception. I'm not sure if I do something wrong (wrong User Name or Password) or is it a problem with installation application or with OS. Please, help.

Can't Change TCP Port Using Configuration Manager For X64 SQL 2005 SP1 Virtual Instance

Feb 27, 2007

Hi, I hope someone can help me!   I changed the TCP port that the default instance of SQL 2005 x64 SP1 is listening on and now SQL server won't start as the port is being used - no problem I say to myself, I'll just change it again, however I can't!

My problem is that I can not change the TCP Port back again using Configuration Manager - no matter what values I put in, after a restart of the instance it comes up with this in the IP Addresses tab for TCP/IP Properties and SQL Server won't start:

IP1
Active   Yes
Enabled   No
IP Address  aaa.bbb.ccc.111
TCP Dynamic Ports
TCP Port  0

IP2
Active   Yes
Enabled   No
IP Address  aaa.bbb.ccc.222
TCP Dynamic Ports
TCP Port  0

IP3
Active   Yes
Enabled   No
IP Address  aaa.bbb.ccc.333
TCP Dynamic Ports
TCP Port  0

IP4
Active   Yes
Enabled   No
IP Address  10.1.1.1
TCP Dynamic Ports
TCP Port  0

IP5
Active   Yes
Enabled   No
IP Address  127.0.0.1
TCP Dynamic Ports
TCP Port  0

IPALL
TCP Dynamic Ports 2020
TCP Port  2020

Interestingly, the ip address that the server is listening on aaa.bbb.ccc.444 is not reported in the list of IP addresses in the configuration manager for this instance, yet it is when I view the available IP addresses for the other two instances - is this significant?

I have tried failing to the other node, changing it there, changing it at the console and also while logged onto the the virtual machine remote desktop, rebooting both nodes, etc, etc.   There are two other instances on this cluster that are still working fine but I hvae not attempted to change the TCP ports they listen on.

I used the same method to change this default instance as I did for a named instance on a similarly configured cluster and it worked fine.   How to fix this?

Regards, Mike

SQL Disk Configuration Question

Jan 3, 2008

Hello.

Please excuse the following question from a newbie to SQL.

I have been asked by our DBA to set-up a new SAN tray to cope with our company data bases.

We have an MSA1000 fibre channel that the Database Servers connect to via a Fibre link.

We have a second SAN tray attached that currently has no disks attached to it, this is the one that we are going to use for the new Database set-up.

We will be purchasing 300 GB 15k disks but the question i have is how many disks and what configuration will i need for the following scenario.

100 GB PRIMARY DATA
50 GB DATABASE LOG
100 GB SECONDARY DATA
300 GB ARCHIVE DATA
50 GB TEMP DATABASE

I have been reading as much as i can about SQL and Disk I/O and it appears on the face of it that Raid 10 would be the fastest (and most fault tolerant) for the this set-up.

If anybody has any ideas they would be gratefully received.

Thank you for your time.

Regards

Disk Configuration For Replicated Database

Jan 25, 2008

We are going to implement either a replicated database or use log shipping to another database to support our reporting needs. Basically we are moving reporting over data off our transactional database.

With this in mind, I have several questions:
Are there any special configurations in terms of disks for a database in this situation? What are the recommended raid types?
Also, we currently store our data in one filegroup and indexes in another so obviously I'll want those on 2 separate physical disks other than the C:. What about the log files? Do I care where they go (on C: or another physical drive separate from C:, data filegroup drive and index filegroup drive)?

Thanks!

SQL Server, Disk Arrays And Disk IO

May 7, 2004

Hi all,

Ok here goes,

I have a three tier system using SQL server 2000, we are currently experiencing IO bottle necks on our SCSI Raid 10 array, which holds the Data and the logs in separate partitions.

So my options as I understand it are:

Get Enterprise edition

or

Get another physical raid 10 array and separate the logs and data i.e. data on one array and logs on the other array.

I would like to try the latter but I am totally unsure how much difference this will make or whether it will make any difference at all.

Does anyone know how much performance increase I will get from using two arrays as opposed to one?

Any other advice on this scenario would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

SQL Server + MS Virtual Server Connectivity

Feb 18, 2008

I am testing out server virtualization for our company and I hit a road block when I got to SQL Server. All the test consists of is installing IIS 6 on 2K3 Standard, installing SQL Server and trying to connect to the database in a SqlDataSource in Visual Web Developer 2008. I can access the Default.aspx page at http://server/Default.aspx, but I cannot access the database. TCP and Pipes are on and I shut down the Windows Firewall on both the host and guest OS's.

I can't connect to SQL through code locally or remotely. I can't connect with Server Management Studio from a remote machine (Error: 1326 - could not open a connection), I cannot connect from the host OS, but I can connect locally within the VM to Management Studio.

SQL Server Under A Virtual Machine

Aug 17, 2007

I really need some help. This is what I'm trying to do: first of all, i have a PC running Vista. Now on that PC, i have a virtual machine using VMWare Workstation 6, which has Win XP with SP2 installed on it. On the virtual machine, i have Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with SP2; now, the thing is, i have a program in C#, which is supposed to connect to a network, but since I'm running on just one PC which is not connected to a network, i instead connect to 127.0.0.1 via port 1433. Now here's where my problems start. At first, i could not connect because i kept receiving an error which said "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provedier: TCP provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.)". A friend of my mine helped, so i did the following: i went into SQL Server Surface Area Configuration (configuration for localhost) , changed the remote connections to allow for both local and remote, using both TCP/IP and named pipes, restarted the database engine, started the SQL Server Browser; then i went to administrator tools, Data Sources (ODBC), and from System DSN tried to add an SQL Server. I gave it a name, and on the server textbox i tried typing "localhost", but doing so, i could not get past the next screen, (i did specify the port as 1433) where i have to chose between win nt and sql server authentication, and neither would work (even though i know the sa password and can log on to SQL Management Studio using that password). Then i tried copying the server name from the management studio, as the server when trying to add the system DSN. That seems to have worked, and i finished ading the SQL Server to the System DSN, using the database which i wanted. But after all these steps, i still get the exact same error as before - "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the
fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote
connections. (provedier: TCP provider, error: 0 - No connection could
be made because the target machine actively refused it.)".If someone can please help - i've tried everything i can think of - i can access the internet from the virtual machine, i even tried disabling the firewall, but no luck. Is it because of the virtual machine? If so, can anyone suggest a solution? I actually doubt it, because i've even tried to install it on my pc, not the virtual machine, so on vista - and also installed SP1 for VS 2005 and SP1 for Vista, but still the same thing. Sorry for making this post so long, but if anyone can help, i'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

HELP! New Virtual Server In Existing Cluster

Mar 6, 2004

I have a 2 part question about adding a new 'named' Virtual Server to an existing Clustered SQL Server 2000 install.

I have a 2 node MSCS Cluster (WIN2K advanced Server sp4) with a default SQL Server instance. This has been in production and working fine. I created a new Cluster resource and reran SQL Server 2000 ENT setup and added a second Virtual SQL Server (named instance). After many problems, finally got the second Server installed. Now I have 2 SQL Server instances in the Cluster - from what I understand, you can have up to 16, each seperate installs with seperate Cluster resources.
Thus the problem:

For the Second Instance, I have specific instructions from the Applications vendor on how to install SQL Server to work with their APP. I need install SQL Server WITHOUT the Full Text Search component and WITH a specific Server Collation (Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual character set). (I have done this same setup on standalone SQL Server installations for this APP and they have gone smooth).

When I installed the new Virtual 'named' instance in my Cluster, I Could NOT 'DESELECT' Full Text Search when I choose Custom install.. it does not appear as an option???

Also, I chose the "Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual character set" during the installation, but that is not the Server Collation that is installed...

I have already installed SP3 for SQL Server against the Virtual Server on this Cluster, as well as a HotFix... and Now I'm thinking I need to rerun the SQL Server installation, uninstall the second server and reinstall to see if I can fix the 'Collation problem' .. but I'm not sure if this is the right course of action.

Does anyone know why I cannot 'deselect' Full text search component at install, and any ideas why it did not install with the SQL Server Collation that I specified at install????

SQL server has 32 MB of RAM. It starts well but begins continuously eating up virtual memory by 16k blocks in a second,
until it takes all virtual memory.

Server's shutdown generate following error in Event log System section:

Event ID: 7011
Source: Service Control Manager
Description: Timeout (120000 milliseconds) waiting for transaction response

When I start Server from command prompt with -f switch, it did not eat virtual memory,
and did not generate any error in Event log at shutdown.

Many thanks for any help.
