We're trying to troubleshoot a timeout issue, so it was requested that I add a WAITFOR statement (1 hour) in a certain stored proc our application uses. I added it and confirmed that it was working by executing the stored proc in SSMS.
However, when our application (using Entity Framework) calls the stored proc, the WAITFOR statement is ignored.
I have one main stored procedure. It calls other 10 stored procedures by giving input parameters.
Do I want to implement Begin Try/Begin catch in each sub procedures or in main procedure only.
Whats the difference between waitfor time and waitfor delay in SQL Sever2000.
Which one is better if you want to send a file at a certain time?

I am trying to test a stored proc and I can't execute the stored proc when I use a Guid. Has anyboyd had the same problem. I right click in VS 2008 on the Stored proc click Execute and fill in the variables one of them is a Guid and no records are returned.
Here is my guid, I have tried '{0a5c25fa-3aac-4abc-8d07-6d76ab46c9b2}', {0a5c25fa-3aac-4abc-8d07-6d76ab46c9b2} and "0a5c25fa-3aac-4abc-8d07-6d76ab46c9b2" no success. This stored proc might not work but I have had the same issue with other stored procs when I wanted to test them by using execute and using a Guid.
Testing with an int works fine when I try to Select the records by UserID which is a Guid no cigar. I have notice this behavier before is there a way around this problem, thanks newbie
The following code does work but when the stored procedure is called it takes about 10 seconds for it to load. I am not refering to the 30 minute wait before the name is deleted.
Anyone have any ideas why the call would be so slow? Thanks.

I have some code that I need to run every quarter. I have many that are similar to this one so I wanted to input two parameters rather than searching and replacing the values. I have another stored procedure that's executed from this one that I will also parameter-ize. The problem I'm having is in embedding a parameter in the name of the called procedure (exec statement at the end of the code). I tried it as I'm showing and it errored. I tried googling but I couldn't find anything related to this. Maybe I just don't have the right keywords. what is the syntax?

I am working with a large application and am trying to track down a bug. I believe an error that occurs in the stored procedure isbubbling back up to the application and is causing the application not to run. Don't ask why, but we do not have some of the sourcecode that was used to build the application, so I am not able to trace into the code.
So basically I want to examine the stored procedure. If I run the stored procedure through Query Analyzer, I get the following error message:

I don't know if the error message is sufficient enough to cause the application from not running? Does anyone know? If the RAISERROR occursmdiway through the stored procedure, does the stored procedure terminate execution?
Also, Is there a way to trace into a stored procedure through Query Analyzer?

I know very little about Extended Events, but I know it is supposed to be more powerful than Profiler. The SQL Instance involved is 2008R2. I was asked whether we could capture when a stored proc was called with a certain parameter. So for example, if dbo.usp_mystoredproc is called and is passed a value of '12345a' for @customer, can that be captured? I would want to know the time it was called, the parameter and parameter value. Probably would be interested in the SPID or LoginName as well.

OK, I have been raking my brains with this and no solution yet. I simply want to update a field in a table given the record Id. When I try the SQL in standalone (no sp) it works and the field gets updated. When I do it by executing the stored procedure from a query window in the Express 2005 manager it works well too. When I use the stored procedure from C# then it does not work:
1. ExecuteNonQuery() always returns -1 2. When retrieving the @RETURN_VALUE parameter I get -2, meaning that the SP did not find a matching record.
So, with #1 there is definitely something wrong as I would expect ExecuteNonQuery to return something meaningful and with #2 definitely strange as I am able to execute the same SQL code with those parameters from the manager and get the expected results.

As I said when I execute standalone UPDATE works fine, but when approaching it via C# it returns -2 (did not find Id).

And this stored procedure is setting this generated value as an output parameter. But my problem is:my asp.net page is only sending an insert parameter to the table with the trigger, trigger is running some code depending on the insert parameter and calling this other stored procedure internally. So basically i m not calling this last stored procedure that sets the output parameter within my web form. How can i get the output parameter in my webform? Everthing is working now, whenever an insert hits the table trigger runs and generates this value and called stored procedure sets it as an output parameter. I can get the output parameter with no problem in query analyzer, so the logic has no problem but i have no idea how this generated output parameter can be passed in my webform since its not initiated there.any help will greately be appreciated, i m sure asp.net and sql server 2000 is powerful and flexible enough to accomplish this but how??-shane

I didn't want to maintain similar/identical tables in a legacy FoxPro system and another system with SQL Server back end. Both systems are active, but some tables are shared.
Initially I was going to use a Linked Server to the FoxPro to pull the FP data when needed. This works. But, I've come up with what I believe is a better solution. Keep in mind that these tables are largely static - occassional changes, edits.
I will do a 1 time DTS from FP into SQL Server tables.
I then create INSERT and UPDATE triggers within FoxPro.
These triggers fire a stored procedure in FoxPro that establishes a connection to the SQL Server and fire the appropriate stored procedure on SQL Server to CREATE and/or UPDATE the corresponding table there.
In the end - the tables are local to both apps.
If the UPDATES or TRIGGERS fail I write to an error log - and in that rare case - I can manually fix. I could set it up to email me from within FoxPro as well if needed.

As part of a nightly process, I must call a stored procedure that uses cursors to update a Sybase linked server from SQL Server. The stored proc was written by someone else and is intended to interface to a finance system to upload new transactions.
The stored proc works fine most of the time but occasionally dies part-way through with the following confusing error message:
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Internally generated command failed to affect a row.]

I initially ran this stored proc from a perl script via an ODBC link but in the futile hope of fixing this problem I tried manually executing it via isql.exe instead. Both return exactly the same error. I have also increased the OLE/DB query timeout to 15 minutes with no success in stopping the problem.
There seems to be no connection I can spot between when it succeeds and when it fails. When scheduled to run just after midnight it fails about 30% of the time (at a time when there should be a light load on the servers). When run manually it almost always suceeds (I have only managed to get it to fail through running manually once in dozens of attempts).
I can't seem to find anything relevant about this error via Google or any of my usual reference sources so hoped someone else might have a clue as to what the hell's going on. :confused:
The stored procedure uses a cursor to traverse a SELECT statement then performs several INSERTs, UPDATEs and DELETEs depending upon each row processed and attempts (but usually fails) to perform a ROLLBACK upon an error.
I'd appreciate any pointers in the right direction here. Is it because I'm performing cursor-based operations on a linked server? Is it due to the linked server being a Sybase server? Could it be due to locking problems or timeouts? Is my server in a bad mood and simply trying to taunt me? I'm tearing my hair out trying to find more information on this annoyingly intermittent problem and really appreciate any help or tales of similar errors.

Multiple tables based on individual product names.I am getting data by calling the same stored procedure multipletimes... for the single set of data I use "product like '%'"To get the data for individual products, I am using a cursor to parsethe product list.It's working great except that I have no idea how to identify theresults short of including a column with the product name. While thatis fine, I'm wondering if there is something that is like a header ortitle that I could insert prior to generating the data that would looka little tighter.Thanks in advance-DanielleJoin Bytes!
View 3 Replies View RelatedHi!I have this table:Units -id uniqueidentified (PK), -groupName NVARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, -name NVARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, -ratio float NULL and the stored proc that simply returns all rows:ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.ilgSP_GetUnitsAS SELECT [id], [groupName], [name], [ratio] FROM [Units] ORDER BY [groupName], [name]If I select 'Show Table Data' in Visual Studio 2005 I see all rows from the table. If I 'Execute' my stored from VS 2005 I get this:Running [dbo].[ilgSP_GetUnits].id groupName name ratio -------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- No rows affected.(1 row(s) returned)@RETURN_VALUE = 0Finished running [dbo].[ilgSP_GetUnits].And I don't get any data in my ASP.NET application.
