SQL Server 2008 :: Cannot Handle Multiple Threads Same Time
Jul 24, 2012
we are queirying an stored procedure multiple times same time,from our application. In this case, few processes executing successfully and few getting failed with error "50000 error executing the stored procedure" and if we run thesame process again its getting executed sucessfully.Does the MySQL cannot handle multiple threads same time?

I wanted to know how we can handle Time Zones and Daylight Savings Time in SQL Server 2000 as well as 2005.
Any pointers would be helpful.

I'm looking for a way of taking a query which returns a set of date time fields (probable maximum of 20 rows) and looping through each value to see if it exists in a separate table.
E.g.
Query 1
Select ID, Person, ProposedEvent, DayField, TimeField
from MyOptions
where person = 'me'
Table
Select Person, ExistingEvent, DayField, TimeField
from MyTimetable
where person ='me'
Loop through Query 1 and if it finds ANY matching Dayfield AND Timefield in Query/Table 2, return the ProposedEvent (just as a message, the loop could stop there), if no match a message saying all is fine can proceed to process form blah blah.
I'm essentially wanting somebody to select a bunch of events in a form, query 1 then finds all the days and times those events happen and check that none of them exist in the MyTimetable table.

I have two tables called ECASE and PROJECT
In the ECASE table there is trigger to get the max value of case_id column in ecase based on project and increment one to that case_id value and insert into ecase table .
When we insert a new record to the ECASE table this trigger calls and insert the case_id column value.
When i run with multiple threads , the transaction is rolled back because of trigger . The reason is , on the project table the lock is happening while getting the max value of case_id column based on project.
I need to prevent the deadlock .

SQL Server 2008 r2 - 6 GB memory...I attempted a backup on a 500GB database but it was taking way too long. I checked the resources on the box and saw the CPU at 100%. I checked the SQL Server activity log and saw a hung query (user was not even logged on) that had multiple threads so I killed it and now the CPU utilization is back to normal.
Trouble is, now all of the threads in the activity monitor for the backup show 'suspended' and the backup appears to be not doing anything.

how to handle space between multi-value parameter values in SSRS. For e.g. if the values are as follows -'KLO LUG', 'HGY KIU', 'LOT JUY', I know I can use the split function for the commas but its the space between the value which is the problem.

hi,
do i need to use specially synchronized code if i have multiple threads inserting, updating and reading rows to and from the same database?? in this case, i know that no 2 threads will try to insert or update the exact same row into the DB, however, multiple threads might try to read the same row from the database.
thanks!

Hi, I'm trying to stress test my web application, but when I get high load, the queries that used to take 10-20 ms starts taking 500 - 2000+ ms. Or to put it another way, when i run them single threaded i can do about 43000 a minute, when they are run in paralell it drops to about 2500 a minute.
What can i do about this ?
There are severeal queries thats affected, but here is one example:
update [user] with (ROWLOCK XLOCK) set timestamp = getdate() where userid = 1''
btw: im running sql server 2005 sp 1. The stress test is run on 3 machines total (web, sql and client) the client is simulation 400 users, cliking a page as soon as the last one is loaded, ie there will always be 400 page requests.

Our company is in the retail business, thus, the window for processing cubes is very small during Christmas season (only 4 hours each day).
To speed things up, we have partitioned our cube at monthly level so, potentially, 12 threads can be run simultantsly. However, when I looked at DTS, I am not so sure whether or how it can accomplish that task. Has anyone tried this before or is aware of another third party tool can do the trick?
thx in adcance,
Carl.

Hi All
I have been asked by developers if there is any advantage in processing multiple clustering models simultaneously by using AMO and multiple threads as against processing one after another.
I have limited experience with Analysis Services but based on my reading I don't see this method providing any advantage.
Does anyone have any recommendations or advice? The system Enterprise Edition running on an x86 Server with 2 dual core processors and 4GB of RAM. Would the answer alter if the server running x64 version of SQL Server and Windows.
Thanks

I found a peculiar thing today while working with SQL Mobile in a multithreaded application (VS2005, application for Pocket PC 2003).
I created a class which has one SqlCeConnection object. Every time I call a function to insert/select/delete something from the local db, I open the connection, execute the query an then close the connection again.
But when I'm calling a function from the db class in thread 1 and in the meantime call a different function (from the same db class of course) in thread 2, things go wrong. Because when function 1 wants to close the connection, function 2 is still using the connection and it will crash my application with a native exception (0xC0000005: access violation).
I can see why the error is happening, but shouldn't there be a nice .NET handled exception instead of a native exception which grinds my app to a hold?
(A workaround I use now is to use multiple connection objects instead of one, but I thought I'd give this feedback anyway)

We are using SQL Server 2008 as our database and use Access as a GUI. I am looking to create a form in Access where employees can access their time card and request changes from management. I want to use the format from the attached screen shot for the form. I pretty much know how to do it all, the only point of complication is trying to figure out the easiest way to get the transaction punch record data on employee_punch_record into a format where I can easily populate the form in the horizontal format you see in the screen shot.
I am not super strong in SQL, but figure I can do it using a formatting table of some sort. quick and easy way to move transaction records into a more horizontally oriented record?

Hi Guys,
I am searching for some information on achieving performance improvement by spawning multiple threads in single Stored procedure or rather say within Single Database connection. We have a batch process that updates around 200 tables and each table update takes around 2 mnts. I am trying to optimize this by running these updates in parallel rather than sequential. These all tables are mutually exclusive. I have written a stored procedure which updates these tables in loop. Concern is that every update statement waits for other to get over. I am calling this Sp from Java application. One crude way will be opening multiple connections to database each running separate T-SQL statement. It comes with lot of overhead in opening connections .Is there any way I can force explicitly in T-SQL stored procedure to spawn a new thread for every Update statement. In case I try to do same process from a Java connection.. is there a way I can open multiple threads for each statement under same database connection.
Thanks,
Vikalp

Hi,
I am using distributed transactions where in I start a TransactionScope in BLL and receive data from service broker queue in DAL, perform various actions in BLL and DAL and if everything is ok call TransactionScope.Commit().
I have a problem where in if i run multiple instances of the same app ( each app creates one thread ), the threads pop out the same message and I get a deadlock upon commit.
My dequeue SP is as follows:
CREATE PROC [dbo].[queue_dequeue]
@entryId int OUTPUT
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @conversationHandle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER;
DECLARE @messageTypeName SYSNAME;
DECLARE @conversationGroupId UNIQUEIDENTIFIER;
GET CONVERSATION GROUP @conversationGroupId FROM ProcessingQueue;
if (@conversationGroupId is not null)
BEGIN
RECEIVE TOP(1) @entryId = CONVERT(INT, [message_body]), @conversationHandle = [conversation_handle], @messageTypeName = [message_type_name] FROM ProcessingQueue WHERE conversation_group_id=@conversationGroupId
END
if @messageTypeName in
(
'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/EndDialog',
'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error'
)
begin
end conversation @conversationHandle;
end
END
Can anyone explain to me why the threads are able to pop the same message ? I thought service broker made sure this cannot happen?

I need to update multiple columns in a table with multiple condition.
For example, this is my Query
update Table1
set weight= d.weight,
stateweight=d.stateweight,
overallweight=d.overallweight
from
(select * from table2)d
where table1.state=d.state and
table1.month=d.month and
table1.year=d.year
If table matches all the three column (State,month,year), it should update only weight column and if it matches(state ,year) it should update only the stateweight column and if it matches(year) it should update only the overallweight column
I can't write an update query for each condition separately because its a huge select

I have a webform that lists all items (codes) on the left and selected items (codes) on the right. A user selects an item on the left and clicks a button to move it to the right side. An update changes the bit from 0 to 1. This uses the bit column in the table to determine what is listed on the left (0) or right (1) sides.
Then I can filter in my stored procedure on the bit column WHERE (dbo.tblCodes.CodeSelect = 1)
My problem with this is that if two or more users are doing this process on different sessions, they can trip over each others selections.
I'm hoping someone has a suggestion on how I might avoid the users having this problem.

Hi,
I have a situation where every morning files are downloaded from an ftp site.
Problem is, I don't know beforehand how many files there will be. Usually it's one or two, but might be more. All files need to be loaded in the database.
How can I account for there multiple files, whose number I do not know beforehand? That is, in the file connection manager, how do I tell it which files to load?
Help.

I have multiple columns in a table that I only want to convert if they are not null or of the proper type. I don't really want to redirect the whole row if one of the conversions fails, rather I would just not want to do the cast or set it to another value. In this scenario is it better to use a custom script or multiple tasks? The multiple tasks seems like a lot of overhead for processing the same data. Just curious how others handle this scenario as it seems as though it has come up quite often on our current project? Thanks for the assistance.
-Krusty
PS: Is it possible to embed evaluation statements along with conversion statements in a task expression? e.g. (len(trim([Column1])) > 0) substring([Column1], 1, 4)

Can I use a full and differential backup to restore to a point of time?
Or I have to use full and transaction log backups in order to do a point of time restore?
I found today when I tried to restore a db from another database at the point of time for example 3:10 pm,
SSMS automatically select the full backup + the transaction backup that is done at 3:00 pm, but not select full + the differential backup I did at 3:12pm.
So I lost those records entered after 3:00pm.
I supposed it should use the differential backup and restore to 3:10. but it didn't.

I've been working with Database Mail for some time but I haven't seen this one before. I have a maintenance plan that does the following:
1. Check database integrity
On Success:
2. Perform backups
On Success:
3. Perform a maintenance cleanup
On Success:
4. Notify operator of success
Steps 1 - 3 are also linked (via On Failure arrows) to a singular Notify Operator of Failure task.
The maintenance plan does exactly what I want it to, and if everything goes correctly, it successfully sends an email to an operator.
If steps 1 - 3 fail, the job ends in an error state, but does not trigger the Notify Operator of Failure task.
I was able to recreate the problem by creating another maintenance plan on the same instance with the same steps. Its "Notify Operator" on failure task also doesn't work.
It occurs to me that maybe I'm missing something, so here's some of the details of my SQL server:
SQL 2008 + SP1 (10.0.2531) x64 on Windows 2008 R2
DB Mail profile is public and default
I do have a slightly unusual profile, in that it uses two accounts:
1. A connection to a SharePoint SMTP service (where it catches emails directed at document libraries)
2. A connection to a UNIX-based smtp server (which routes mail to regular mailboxes and my SQL DBA mailing list)
The Profile will attempt to send to the SharePoint server first. The SharePoint server does not relay. If the document library email address doesn't exist, SQL will raise a warning (in the Database Mail log) and the profile will use the second account on the list, which is a real mail server and can relay the message to any mailbox.
It works really well, actually. When the maintenance plan completes successfully, the message is sent to the drop folder on the SharePoint server, and SharePoint routes the email to the correct library, and we have a central archive of all DB Mail notifications.
But if the job fails (for example, if the backup disk is out of space), none of this happens. According to the log, the job doesn't even try to send a notification. Looking at the DBMail log, the Mail service does not start. No email is delivered to the drop folder of the receiving SMTP server. So I don't think my Database Mail configuration is the problem here. It is apparently something to do with the way the job itself handles errors.

I have a asp.net 2.0 web application. In one of the modules I have following scenario. In the UI there are 3 pages to take the input from the user. On the 1st page, we are inserting data in the master table and with the same we are beginning new sql transaction with the isolation level READ UNCOMMITTED. so that uncommited master table data can be read. Master table has also has 4 detail tables. Then the user is navigated to 2nd and then to 3rd page where the user can enter multiple records in the detail tables. And only after finishing on the 3rd page, the transaction is commited.
I want to ask that is it the right way of doing this kind of functionality?
And is there any other way of doing this?

We have a 1TB Database. Our backup strategy looks like this.
Weekly Full backups - Saturday 10pm. (Takes anywhere between 5 - 9 hours)
twice Nightly Diffs (8:30p and 2:30am - Mid week this takes roughly 1.5 hours)
Hourly Log backups starting at 4:00am until 11pm.
I have an issue where I need to restore to 3:00 today. If my (2:30a)Diff is still running at that recovery point.
I am getting an error when trying to restore Full/2:30a Diff/4a Log with a stopat 3:00a.
Error telling me my log backup is incorrectly formed.
Can I, in fact, restore to this point at all? Do I need to go back to my previous Diff (8:30p) and restore the logs, if so, which ones?
My nighttime Diff ran from 8:30 - 10p.
I have logs at 9p, 10p, 11p, 4a

We have many users with a mobile application running SQL Mobile and using merge replication to get data back to the SQL 2008 R2 database. This has worked very well for many years.
We now have a requirement to have this data reported on using Reporting Services. This is where it gets messy.
Due to a limitation of Report Builder(see this blog) we cannot provide access to users for creating their own reports. The report database is remote from the host and there is no VPN.
We hit upon the idea of creating an almost identical publication but the articles as read-only. It was only after this was done that we started having trouble with our existing mobile users.
It seems that a published article is EITHER Bi-directional OR Read-only even if they are in separate publications.
I then thought of using Transactional Publication but this too is blocked on creation with "automatic identity range support is useful only for publications that allow updating subscribers"(Merge and Transactional publication are mutually exclusive)
So in the final analysis is there a way for me to have merge replication AND some other form of SQL replication/data transfer that can have the same data transmitted readonly to a separate full SQL server database?

basically, is it inefficient to open and close a data connection everytime data needs to be retrieved or is there a way for a user to use the same conenction over multiple pages orfor multiple users to share one global data connection I just wanted to know this before I built a site where data could be constantly being pulled or put into the database.It would be easier to just keep opening and closing the connection since it just means pasting in the small chunk of code I use to do that where I need it. I hear speak of connections sometimes not closing etc and wonder if that is an issue then if you are opening and closing too many of them. I am using SqlConnection SqlCommand and SqlDatareader , my code works, just wondering if my approach lacked scalability before I find out too late and have to rewrite everything . Jim
