I'm trying to create an import package using BIDS. I'm using SQL Server 2008. The data is saved as a .csv file so that I can use the flat file option for data source. The issue I am having is that when I preview the flat file after selecting it as the datasource, some of the data that have the numeric file format are showing up as non numeric, for instance the value -1,809,575,682,700 is being viewed as ""1 and the package is giving a conversion error.

I have an .xlsx file where I need to import the data into a table. If there is not a way to do this, is there a way to import either a tab del file or different type of .csv file into the database?
Do not want to use the SSIS or import feature from SQL2008 as I tried to save the steps and running it wont work either.

I have a record in an Excel format (Excel 2010) and I would like to bulk import that into SQL Server 2008 and also while importing, SQL Server will automatically create a new table based on the header fields or row of the source file.
I am not sure if SQL Server 2008 has this capabilities.

I've been using full-text for quite some time, but I switched to another product for quite some time. The reason is that microsoft full-text doesn't offer the feature where one can get a resultset of page x out of y pages, i.e: give me top 100 matches of page 125 out of 5000 pages. I disappointedly waited for SQL Server 2005 and now it doesn't seem to support in sql server 2008 full-text search either. I had to get all 5000 pages of data, then jumped to page 125 to get just 100 records of that page--had to go get a coffee and came back for a 2+ millions rows table. Customers want the result in a split of a second.
Anyone knows if the final version of sql server 2008 will have better support for paging and getting top x rows? I scanned through 2008 BOL and didn't see any change from sql server 2005 or even sql server 2000 full-text search. (one improvement in sql server 2005 over sql server 2000 was the speed of populating large catalog and multiple languages support)
Thanks,
HH

I created a thread 2 days back on a performance problem RE non-trusted check constraints and foreign key constraints. We are planning to make them trusted to see if it works. On the other hand, we see about 50+ clustered/non-clustered indexes with >90% fragmentation but the page counts for all these indexes are in the range between 500-900. I'm reading in the whitepaper that index fragmentation with less than 1000 pages is not a concern.

I have moved some DB's from a physical server to a virtual server while the physical server is being upgraded. This morning when I checked to make sure all the jobs are running fine I saw that a backup job failed for one of the databases. The error was :
[color=#ff0000]Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM. BACKUP 'database 1' detected an error on page (1:1400911) in file 'D:Datadatabase 1.mdf'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3043) BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3013). The step failed.[/color]
Then I ran a DBCC check db command and found the following errors:
Msg 8928, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Msg 8939, Level 16, State 98, Line 1
Msg 8976, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Msg 8978, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Msg 8939, Level 16, State 98, Line 1
Msg 8978, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The messages varies from data from one page cannot be referenced on another, data page cannot be processed, page was not seen in the scan although the parent was etc etc.

I am trying to import an xlsx spreadsheet into a sql 2008 r2 database using the SSMS Import Wizard. When pointed to the spreadsheet ("choose a data source") the Import Wizard returns this error:
"The operation could not be completed" The Microsoft ACE.OLEDB.12.0 provider is not registered on the local machine (System.Data)
How can I address that issue? (e.g. Where is this provider and how do I install it?)

Any way to bulk export / import TDE Certs? I've got a bunch of databases that need to be moved to another system. Just about every database is using TDE and was wondering if there was a way to move these certs in a bulk fashion. I've got SQL and Powershell scripts to backup and restore multiple databases, but won't do me any good without the certs.

I have created an insert trigger to update an address column with a default when it is null, for different clients using a case statement.
When I import data using the import wizard, the trigger doesn't fire.
Doesn't SQL see an import as an insert?
How can I get this trigger to fire for an import?

We noticed a deadlock 3-4 weeks ago on a table (table1) and deadlock graph was captured.
When I am analyzing the deadlock graph, page number using DBCC PAGE, I am getting the object id for a different table (table2). But deadlock graph shows the name of the object as table1.
Is it possible that subsequent defragmentation of indexes would have caused the respective page id to got re-allocated to a different table? I checked the deadlock graph lately only after 3-4 weeks.

Historically I've always written a VB script to copy a file from a sharepoint library. I don't like this method because I have to input a username & password in the script and maintain a config file.
Yesterday I was playing around with using a file system task. The sharepoint file has a UNC path so why not? I created a simple test package with a single file system task that copies the sharepoint file (addressed via UNC) to another network location. Package runs fine locally.
I try running on our utility server but am getting a "The file name [SHAREPOINT UNC PATH] specified in the connection was not valid" error. Package is running with a proxy on the server and the proxy account has the same permissions to the sharepoint site (so far as I can tell) as me.

Not seeing the Review Data Type Mapping Screen in SQL Server Import and Export Wizard?
Is there only a certain version where that screen shows up?
I am trying to import data from an MS Access application to SQL Server and all of the connections are good, but some of the data isn't and if I let it migrate using this tool it crashes on the bad data and there is no data that migrates. The Review Data Type Mapping screen will allow me to bypass the records in error and load the rest. however, I can;t do that if I cannot see the screen.

I am running a DBCC SHRINKFILE on "FILE1" of a database (it has fileid = 1)...intent is to remove 70GB of file space:
DBCC SHRINKFILE (N'FILE1' , 400000).
For the SPID that's doing the shrink, In activity monitor you can see:
Waittype: PAGEIOLATCH_EX on resource: 9:3:15411328
(the DB is dbid=9)
But why does it need a page from fileid=3? Are there page dependencies between files that prevent moving a page within a given file? Does it need that fileid3 page to come along?
Its just sitting there in the SUSPENDED state for the last hour....I am going to leave it another 5 hours or so before cancelling.
The dm_exec_requests has an estimated percent complete at 83% and holding....not sure if I can believe that.

Hi all,
We have our SQL Server 2005 installed in a server with below specifications.
MS Windows Server 2003 R2
Standard x64 Edition
Service Pack 2
Intel(R)Xeon(R)CPU
5160 @ 3.00GHz
3.00 GHz, 8.00 GB of RAM
The issue is ,
When a query window is opened and a procedure is executed or a DBCC command is executed , the PF usage keeps on increasing and reaches the maximum 8.81 GB and remains there forever even if the query is stopped and the session is closed.
The CPU usage also shoots up and stays between 90 - 100 %.
Now, it is not possible to open a new query or do any operation in the SQL server and a Timeout Expired error is thrown.
My questions are ,
1. Is that good for the SQL server to occupy the total RAM ?
2. Is the performance related to the RAM space occupied by SQL server ?
3. What should we do in order free the PF usage after the a process is complete ?
4. Have anyone faced similar scenario ? Any solutions ?
Thanks for your time & any help should be apprecitated.

I just loaded SQL Server on my local NT Server. Client gave me several .dat files. I created a new device and database with the same name (catalog.dat) shut down the server, overwrote the new .dat file with the client`s file, opened up SQL Server and now the catalog database says "Suspect" and it cannot be accessed via SQL/w....
What am I doing wrong?
I have a solid Access background, but I fear that SQL Server is a totally different animal... HeeeelP!??!?!
Thanks!

Hi all,I have a file with an extension of .sdf. I "believe" it is a text fileof some sort but I am uncertain. The source agency hasn't returned anyof my calls so I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with this extension?I'd like to import the file into my database - when I use DTS and chosea text format, regardless of what delimiter I choose, the format isstill really ugly. when I pull it up in a huge text editor, it is hardfor me to tell what it is there.I saw in one of my searches that it could be a comma delimited (it'snot) .. could be a unisys file? I know it's not much information to goon - but where should I start in trying to get this into my databasewithout knowing the format? Any suggestions would be greatlyappreciated. Thanks!Bethany*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!

Hi.
I want to import a flat file to my sql server database. My sql server and web server are on different machines. I used a bulk insert to import the data using a Format.. But now since the sql server and the web server are on different machine it doesnt load the data to the sql server..
i have tried giving http://Ipaddress/Path and that didnt work.. tried mapping the network drive to the webserver and then specified the location and that didnt work too..
I found this connection string on the internet
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=c: xtFilesFolder;Extended Properties="text;HDR=Yes;FMT=Fixed";
but i am not sure how to give a ~ delimited and specify a format file..
any help will be appreciated..

I have one .mdf and two .ndf files on the same drive. The .mdf file size =275GB, one .ndf file size = 300GB and other .ndf file size = 135GB. Is this normal to have 3 different file size? if not what can I do to fix this? I don't have option to make all files to initial size equal to 300GB as a .ndf.If I have to add a .ndf file (in case of running out the above drive), what initial file size should I set up for new file on new drive? And how data gets distributed across all 4 files (including new .ndf on different drive)?
