I have to perform a bulk Import on a regular Basis and have created a script to do this. The Problem is that the .csv file has 12 Columns and the table to Import into has 14. To Workaround this discrepancy I have decided to use a Format file. The Problem is that how to create one.

Can we bulk insert only the desired column from a flat file to a table?
I am using SSIS to bulk insert from a file with more than 200 columns. I am trying to find a way I can bulk insert them to multiples table through SSIS.
The one way I can think is pre map the columns from the file to the destination tables. Build numerous Bulk Insert tasks to achieve that. But not sure if SSIS will let me do that.

I've never worked with a column that's defined as a binary data type. (In the past if ever we had to include a photo we stored a link to the JPG/BMP/PNG/whatever into a column, but never actually inserted or updated a column with binary data. But now I've got to do that. So how do you put data into a column defined as BINARY(4096)?

I had to to relocate the database log file and I issued an Alter database command but by mistake I put a space in the file name as below. The space is at the beginning file name. Now I am unable get the database loaded to SQL Server. The database has 2 replications configured, so deleting and re-attaching the database means the replication needs to be re-configured. Is there an alternative way to issue a command to update the database FILENAME ? Not sure if this can be edited in master database (sys files).
ALTER DATABASE [User_DB]
MODIFY FILE (NAME = User_DB_log, FILENAME = 'I:SQLLogs User_DB_log.ldf')
GO

I have a SQL Server 2005 database file (a .mdf file) that I am trying to open in SQL Server Management Studio so I can add a field to a table, but I am unable to open the file. I can't say that I really understand how SQL Server handles these databases. I especially don't understand the "attaching" and "detaching" operations.
I am working in VB.Net 2008 now, but my background is with VB6 using the JET engine. It was just so straightforward using the JET engine, but seems so much more complicated with SQL Server. I am trying to use .mdf files the same way I used .mdb files. I want my application to find the database file, "attach to it", and let me manipulate it.
At one time I was able to open my database in Sql Server Management Studio and edit the design of the database. The application still works but I am no longer able to modify the database because I cannot attach to it in Management Studio.
Here is a big clue: the files are no longer in the special folder anymore, which is c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATA. I might have deleted the files, stupidly, thinking they were redundant. I still have the .mdf file (and the _log.ldf file) on my hard drive and the application can still open it, but when I try to use Management Studio to attach to the .mdf file, I get this error:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
An error occurred when attaching the database(s). Click the hyperlink in the Message column for details.
here are the details:
Unable to open the physical file "c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATAHEALSExamsSQL.mdf". Operating system error 2: "2(The system cannot find the file specified.)". (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
Indeed the file is not there, but why is Mgmt Studio looking there? Why doesn't it just open the file where it is? What can I do to get it back? I even copied the files to c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATA? I get the same error.
Here is another clue: In Management Studio, when I right-click Databases, and chose Attach, it brings up a dialog. There I click "Add" to get another dialog in which I will select a database, but before the dialog appears I get this error:
Locate Database Files - KURANT-WIN7SQLEXPRESS
C:UsersJason KurantDesktop
Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists.
If you know that the service account can access a specific file, type in the full path for the file in the File Name control in the Locate dialog box.

We are running into the following error while changing a column data type from nvarchar (1200) to varchar(8000)
"Msg 1105, Level 17, State 2, Line 1
Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.TBL1 '.'PK_CL_ID' in database 'Client01' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup.
The statement has been terminated."
Now tried to change the filegrowth of the log file to unlimited
ALTER DATABASE Client01
MODIFY FILE ( NAME = Client01_log, MAXSIZE = unlimited);
The query executes without error but I do not see the auto growth as unrestricted. It's still 2GB

I have an .xlsx file where I need to import the data into a table. If there is not a way to do this, is there a way to import either a tab del file or different type of .csv file into the database?
Do not want to use the SSIS or import feature from SQL2008 as I tried to save the steps and running it wont work either.

I have a well-structured but also very large binary data-set that is generated by a C++ application every five minutes. The data needs to be accessed by SQL applications. Since data is generated every five minutes, performance is key, both for write and read. The data set is about 500MB.If data is written to the file system, the write performance doesn't involve SQL server. For reading it, I have a CLR to read the portions of the data that I need based on offset and length. That works and is very fast. The problem is that data is stored in the file system, so it is not self-contained within the database.
A second option that I haven't explored yet, is to write the data into a table as VARBINARY(MAX). I would read the data using SUBSTRING with appropriate offset and length. Performance of SQL write/read of binary data of this size, and whether there is a third option I haven't thought off. I'm using SQL Server 2014.

I've been struggling with this issue,
1) Test--FolderName (This Test folder name should use as a database name for below sub folders)
a)Create--Sub Foldername
i)create.sql
b)Alter---Sub FolderName
i)Alter.sql
c)Insert---Sub FolderName
i)Insert.sql
[Code] .....
The scripts need to be run in order. So script one needs to run first folder in that sub folders after that next second folders etc..
Is there a way to create a bat file that automatically runs all these scripts, in order against, the databases they need to?
The databases that they need to run against have the name of the database at the beginning of the name of the folder.

hello!
i'm an sql server beginer. i was wondering if some of you guys can help
me out. i need for the sql server to be able to read an outside file (just text) and be able to run a script that will insert it in the database. it's a dcc output file. we've tried running this script:
DROP TABLE tests
go
DECLARE @SQLSTR varchar(255)
SELECT @SQLSTR = 'ISQL -E -Q"dbcc checkdb(master)"'
CREATE TABLE tests (Results varchar(255) NOT NULL)
INSERT INTO tests EXEC('master..xp_cmdshell ''ISQL -E -Q"dbcc checkdb(master)"''')
and it's running good but the problem is the results of the dbcc here did not come from a file but directly after executing the dcc command. is there a way to do it?
thank's for the help!

Historically I've always written a VB script to copy a file from a sharepoint library. I don't like this method because I have to input a username & password in the script and maintain a config file.
Yesterday I was playing around with using a file system task. The sharepoint file has a UNC path so why not? I created a simple test package with a single file system task that copies the sharepoint file (addressed via UNC) to another network location. Package runs fine locally.
I try running on our utility server but am getting a "The file name [SHAREPOINT UNC PATH] specified in the connection was not valid" error. Package is running with a proxy on the server and the proxy account has the same permissions to the sharepoint site (so far as I can tell) as me.

I can retrieve all the source data i need easily but when i come to insert it into the table variable i need to insert 1 record if its a single part or 2 records if its a twin part. I know could use a cursor but im sure there has to be an easier way !
Below is the code i have at the moment
declare @startdate as datetime
declare @enddate as datetime
declare @Line as Integer
DECLARE @count INT
set @startdate = '2015-01-01'
set @enddate = '2015-01-31'

I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 on a windows 2008 server. After one failed backup, I started getting these errors:
Error: 2601, Severity: 14, State: 1.Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'sys.syscommittab' with unique index 'si_xdes_id'.
Error: 3999, Severity: 17, State: 1.Failed to flush the commit table to disk in dbid 5 due to error 2601. Check the errorlog for more information.
From Microsoft, I found this:
A backup Operation On A SQL Server 2008 Database Fails If You Enable Change Tracking On This Database

But this bug refers to SQL Server 2008. What should I do if in my case is a R2 version?

I have two tables having one row identifier column each of int datatype. Both these columns are part of the respective primary keys. Now as a part of my process, i'm inserting one small part of data from one table to another table. This was working fine but suddenly started getting error like
Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_TargetTable'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'DW.TargetTable'. The duplicate key value is (58544748).First I checked with DBCC CHECKIDENT with NORESEED and found that there is difference in the current identity value and current column value. I fixed it by running DBCC CHECKIDENT. But to my surprise again got the same issue. interesting thing is that the error comes after inserting 65466 records.

I've got a piece of code that returns 53 records when using just the SELECT section. When I change it to INSERT INTO ..... SELECT it only inserts 39 records into the receiving table. There are no keys/contraints/indices or anything else on the receiving table (it's just a dumping ground for some data that will be processed later).
The code for creating the table is here:-
USE [CDSExtractInpatients6.2]
GO
/****** Object: Table [dbo].[CDS_Inpatients_CDS_Feeds_Import] Script Date: 22/05/2015 15:54:15 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
[code]...
I know most of the date fields are being created as varchar on here, but this is something I inherited and the SELECT is outputting the dates as text.Don't know if it makes any difference, but the server is running SQL2008.

I'm able to successfully import data in a tab-delimited .txt file using the following statement.
BULK INSERT ImportProjectDates FROM "C: mpImportProjectDates.txt"
WITH (FIRSTROW=2,FIELDTERMINATOR = ' ', ROWTERMINATOR = '')
However, in order to import the text file, I had to add columns to the text file to match the columns that exist in the table. The original file is an export out of another database and contains all but 5 columns from my db.
How would I control which column BULK INSERT actually imports when working with a .txt file? I've tried using a FORMAT FILE, however I kept getting errors which I tracked down to being a case of not using it with a .txt file.
Yes, I could have the DBA add in the missing columns to the query from the other DB to create the columns, however I'd like to know a little bit more about this overall.

I was wondering if there was a way to redirect an insert to another column...
Example:
Original Insert Statement:
INSERT INTO [table] ([columnA], [columnB])
SELECT '2015-01-01 00:00:00', 99.99
We have changed [columnB] from a decimal(19,9) to a computed column. So instead, we added another column [ColumnC] to take [ColumnB]'s insert data. I thought we could've used a trigger instead of insert, but that fails with the message "cannot be modified because it is either a computed column or is the result of a UNION operator".
This is the trigger I was using:
CREATE TRIGGER [Trigger] ON [table]
INSTEAD OF INSERT
AS
INSERT INTO [table] ([columnA], [columnC])
SELECT [dataA], [dataB]
FROM Inserted

What statement do I use, as part of an insert trigger, to insert xml data from the xml database to a flat file database, to check if a record with a specific ID exists to delete first then insert the changed record, instead of adding the changes or an updated from the original xml database.
What I’m trying to do is take the xml formatted data out of one sql server database and insert the data only in that xml into a another sql database. So I can play with the data.
Problem is if the data in the xml is updated or changed for a specific record on the original xml database then the trigger inserts another copy into the created database (which I don’t want).
This is on SQL Server 2008R2.

I am trying to BULK INSERT csv files using a stored procedure in SQL SERVER 2008R2 SP3. Although the files contain several thousand lines and BULK INSERT returns no errors, no data is actually imported into the table. Every field in the table is a NVARCHAR(50) datatype.
Here is the code for the operation (only the parameters for the insert itself):
set @open = 'bulk insert [DWHStaging].[dbo].[Abverkaufsquote] from '''
set @path = 'G:DataStagingDWHStagingSourceAbverkaufsquote'
set @params = ''' with (firstrow = 2
, datafiletype = ''widechar''
, fieldterminator = '';''
, rowterminator = ''
''
, codepage = ''1252''
, keepnulls);'
The csv file originates from a DB2 database. Using exactly the same code base I can import several other types of CSV files without problem.
The files are stored on the local server with as UCS2 Little Endian and one difference is that the files that do not import do not include a BOM. The other difference is that the failed files are non-UNICODE files.

I am experimenting with using CDC to track user changes in our application database. So far I've done the following:
-- ENABLE CDC ON DV_WRP_TEST
USE dv_wrp_test
GO
EXEC sys.sp_cdc_enable_db
GO
-- ENABLE CDC TRACKING ON THE AVA TABLE IN DV_WRP_TEST
USE dv_wrp_test
[Code] ....
The results shown above are what I expect to see. My problem occurs when I use our application to update the same column in the same table. The vb.net application passes a Table Valued Parameter to a stored procedure which updates the table. Below is the creation script for the stored proc:
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
if exists (select * from sysobjects where id = object_id('dbo.spdv_AVAUpdate') and sysstat & 0xf = 4)
drop procedure dbo.spdv_AVAUpdate
[Code] ....
When I look at the results of CDC, instead of operations 3 and 4, I see 1 (DELETE) and 2 (INSERT) for the change that was initiated from the stored procedure:
-- GET CDC RESULTS FOR CHANGES TO AVA TABLE
USE dv_wrp_test
GO
SELECT *
FROM cdc.dbo_AVA_CT
GO
--RESULTS SHOW OPERATION 1 (DELETE) AND 2 (INSERT) INSTEAD OF 3 AND 4
--__$start_lsn__$end_lsn__$seqval__$operation__$update_maskAvaKeyAvaDescAvaArrKeyAvaSAPAppellationID
--0x0031E84F000000740008NULL0x0031E84F00000074000230x02119Test26NULL
--0x0031E84F000000740008NULL0x0031E84F00000074000240x02119Test36NULL
--0x0031E84F00000098000ANULL0x0031E84F00000098000310x0F119Test36NULL
--0x0031E84F00000098000ANULL0x0031E84F00000098000420x0F119Test46NULL
Why this might be happening, and if so, what can be done to correct it? Also, is there any way to get the user id associated with the CDC?

I have two tables. Order table and order detail table.
What I want to do is send notification to a service when an order is created. And I want to include both header and detail of the order.
I can't get working with on insert trigger . How to go around with trigger ?
