Avoiding The Usage Of DTC

Apr 17, 2007

Hello

I am running an script and the following sentence throws and error because the DTC service is not running in the Remote Server:

insert into MyLocalTable
execute synonym_MyRemoteProcedure @SomeParameter

Since a transaction is not declared within the script, why is the DTC required?
How can I avoid the usage of the DTC? Is there a way to say "this code is not within a distributed transaction"?

Thanks a lot.

SQL Server 2012 :: Avoiding Temp Table With String Of IDs Passed Into Stored Procedure

Sep 26, 2014

Using a string of IDs passed into a stored procedure as a VARCHAR parameter ('1,2,100,1020,') in an IN without parsing the list to a temp table or table variable. Here's the situation, I've got a stored procedure that is called all the time. It's working with some larger tables (100+ Million rows). The procedure passes in as one of the variables a list of IDs for the large table. This list can have anywhere from 1 to ~100 IDs passed to it.

Currently, we are using a function to parse the list of IDs into a temp table then joining the temp table to get the query:

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[GetStuff] (
@IdList varchar(max)
)
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED

[Code] .....

The problem we're running into is that since this proc gets called so often, we sometimes run into tempDB contention that slows this down. In my testing (unfortunately I don't have a good way of generating a production load) swapping the #table for an @table didn't make any difference which makes sense to me given that they are both allocated in the tempDB. One approach that I tried was that since the SELECT query is pretty simple, I moved it to dynamic SQL:

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[GetStuff] (
@IdList varchar(max)
)
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED

[Code] ....

The problem I had there, is that it creates an Ad Hoc plan for the query and only reuses it if the same list of parameters are passed in, so I get a higher CPU cost because it compiles a plan and it also causes the plan cache to bloat since the parameter list is almost always different. Is there an approach that I haven't considered that may get the best of both worlds, avoiding or minimizing tempDB contention but also not having to compile a new plan every time the proc is run?

SQL Server 2012 :: Adding A Conditional Join?

Aug 16, 2015

I need to add a join in my select query depending upon a variable @LoggedUser. the Join is to be there if @loggedUser is 1 else i do not need it. Currently I am using two different queries one with join and one without it under If (@LoggedUser check).

the join is like -
JOIN (SELECT CAST(CONVERT(VARCHAR(8),Analyst_Effective_date , 1) AS DATETIME) Analyst_Effective_date
FROM Users us (NOLOCK) JOIN Primary_Analysts (NOLOCK)
ON User_Count_Id = Analyst_Id_fk
WHERE User_Count_Id in ((SELECT VALUE FROM dbo.fParseString(@Analyst, ',')) )) Ana
ON dep.Departure_Code = Ana.Primary_Analyst_Departure_Code_fk
)

Any way that the join can be added conditionally in the query so i do not have to write the whole code again for one join.

SQL Server 2012 :: Conditional Join Between Two Tables

Oct 4, 2015

I have two tables tabA (cola1, cola2, cola3) and tabB(colb1, colb2, colb3, colb4) which I need to join on all 3 columns of table A.

Of the 3 columns in tabA, few can be NULL, in that case I want to check the joining condition for the rest of the columns, so its conditional joining. Let me rephrase what I am trying to acheive - I need to check if the columns in joining condition is NULL in my 1st table (tabA), If so I need to check the joining condition for the rest of the two columns, if 2nd column is again NULL, I need to check the joining condition on the third column.

What I am trying to do is as below. Its working, but is very slow when one of the tables is huge. Can I optimize it or rewrite in a better way ?

--- First Create two tables
Create table tabA
(cola1 nvarchar(100), cola2 nvarchar(100), cola3 nvarchar(100))
Insert into tabA values (NULL,'A1','A2')
Select * from tabA
create table tabB

SQL 2012 :: Memory Usage Extremely High And Causes Server To Crash

Jun 11, 2015

I have been having issues with our SQL server for awhile now. It seems to run out of memory every few days and when I look at the memory dump, the MEMORYCLERK_SQLOPTIMIZER seem to take over memory and eventually cause the server to crash.

Here is the SQL verison we are using: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3460.0 (X64) Jul 22 2014 15:22:00 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 (Build 9200: ) (Hypervisor)..It is on a VM on Windows 2012 server. It has 20gb of RAM allocated to it and the MAX Server Memory is set to 16.5gb.

I have seen the MEMORYCLERK_SQLOPTIMIZER grow to about 11gb at the time of the server crash. Why that is happening? What is causing the memoryclerk_sqloptimizer to get so high? I have looked it up and it looks like it has to do with ad hoc requests, but is there something I can do to bring that memory down when it gets so high so that I can prevent a server crash?Do we just need to add more memory or is there a memory leak somewhere?

SQL Server 2012 :: Stored Procedure With Conditional IF Statement Logic

Aug 9, 2015

I have a data model with 7 tables and I'm trying to write a stored procedure for each table that allows four actions. Each stored procedure should have 4 parameters to allow a user to insert, select, update and delete a record from the table.

I want to have a stored procedure that can accept those 4 parameters so I only need to have one stored procedure per table instead of having 28 stored procedures for those 4 actions for 7 tables. I haven't found a good example online yet of conditional logic used in a stored procedure.

Is there a way to add a conditional logic IF statement to a stored procedure so if the parameter was INSERT, go run this statement, if it was UPDATE, go run this statement, etc?

I have attached my data model for reference.

SQL Server 2012 :: Have Conditional Join / Union Based On Parameters Passed To Stored Procedure

Jul 15, 2014

I am writing a stored procedure that takes in a customer number, a current (most recent) sales order quote, a prior (to most current) sales order quote, a current item 1, and a prior item 1, all of these parameters are required.Then I have current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3, which are optional.

I added an IF to check for the value of current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3, if there are values, then variable tables are created and filled with data, then are retrieved. As it is, my stored procedure returns 3 sets of data when current item 1, prior item 1, current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3 are passed to it, and only one if 2, and 3 are omitted.I would like to learn how can I return this as a one data set, either using a full outer join, or a union all?I am including a copy of my stored procedure as it is.

SQL Server 2012 :: Data Grouping On 2 Levels But Only Returning Conditional Data

May 7, 2014

I think I am definitely thrashing and am not getting anywhere on something I think should be pretty simple to accomplish: I need to pull the total amounts for compartments with different products which are under the same manifest and the same document number conditionally based on if the document types are "Starting" or "Ending" but the values come from the "Adjust" records.

So here is the DDL, sample data, and the ideal return rows

CREATE TABLE #InvLogData
(
Id BIGINT, --is actually an identity column
Manifest_Id BIGINT,
Doc_Num BIGINT,
Doc_Type CHAR(1), -- S = Starting, E = Ending, A = Adjust
Compart_Id TINYINT,

[Code] ....

I have tried a combination of the below statements but I keep coming back to not being able to actually grab the correct rows.

SELECT DISTINCT(column X)
FROM #InvLogData
GROUP BY X
HAVING COUNT(DISTINCT X) > 1

One further minor problem: I need to make this a set-based solution. This table grows by a couple hundred thousand rows a week, a co-worker suggested using a <shudder/> cursor to do the work but it would never be performant.

SQL 2012 :: Tracking Page File Usage - Values Appear Incorrect

Jul 31, 2015

I'm looking for monitoring page file usage for SQL Server. Ultimately, I'm trying to prove that there is not a problem with a server and that it is not struggling with the workload, but someone has looked at page file usage and suggested there is a problem.

I've set up performance counters running from a separate server, but the counters relating to page file usage seem wildly inaccurate. E.g., I've got (_Total\% Usage), and (Total)\%Usage Peak), with Total Usage showing a constant value of 64, and the peak showing 92. I've also got Process (sqlservr)Page File Bytes and Page File Bytes Peak, which are showing values like 61,275,688,960 and hardly dropping below this.

If I look at Performance Monitor directly the values shown in here correlate with this, as shown in my first screenshot. However, if I look at resource monitor and look at disk activity, you can see that there is basically nothing going on (screenshot 2).

The server is more than equipped to deal with the workload, and looking at other counters for SQL there is no indication of problems, e.g. page life expectancy has a minimum value showing of 576,258, there is never less than 6GB of free RAM, SQL compilations are at a maximum of 5% of batch requests.

It is a physical server with 2x 8 core multi threaded CPUs, 64GB RAM with 58GB as the SQL server maximum. Hopefully this is enough info, but I'm happy to check anything else.

SQL 2012 :: Does Trace Flag 2371 Indirectly Reduces CPU Usage

After carefully analyzing the situation for almost a month, I pulled the trigger and made an exception at work; we did enable trace flag 2371. We have some tables with billion of rows and outdated statistics causing horrible plans. Tried several methods to update those, but did not solve the problem or was too CPU intensive, causing other issues.

Anyway, one of the side effects I am seeing so far is average vCPU went down by almost 40%. Nothing out of usual (besides the flag) has been enabled or was executed. So my assumption is, CPU hungry plans are now gone or reduced.
