SQL Server 2012 :: Bulk Load Data Conversion Error (truncation)
May 15, 2014
Is there a switch I can use to force a bulk insert and if data is truncated, I'm good with that. The truncated data, in this case, is not data I can use anyway if it is long enough to be truncated.
I need to keep the field at VARCHAR(23) and if I expand it, I won't be able to join on it after the file load completes. I'd like the data to be inserted (truncated if need be) and then I'll deal with the records that are truncated after I load the file.

hi
"Bulk insert data conversion error (truncation) for row 1, column 1 (id)."
when you get the error above or similar in sql server 2000 does it continue inserting the data by truncating it or does it stop beacause looking at the data that i have got it seems to continue inserting the data but just truncates the colunm. i have tried it several time its seeems to be consistent.
I have data that has white spaces after the actual data e.g. '00093 ' hence i am happy aslong as i can be sure that it does always continue as i will be loading alot of data using a similar process.
hence my question is that will it load all the data all the time and just truncate it to fit the column size?

I'm trying to use Bulk insert for the first time and getting the following error. I think it might have something to do with my Format File and from the error msg there's a conversion error for the first column. In my database the Field is nvarchar(6) so my best guess is to use SQLNChar for the first column. I've checked the end of each line is CR LF therefore the is correct for line 7 right?

Im having some issues with bulk insert.
This is the table:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tmp_GA_status](
[GA_recno] [int] NOT NULL,
[GA_desc] [varchar](40) NULL
)
This is the file (unicode):
1|"test1"
2|"test2"
3|"test3"
4|"test4"
5|"test5"
6|"test6"
7|"test7"
8|"test8"
and this is the sql:
bulk insert tmp_GA_status from 'C: empTextDumpGA_status.dta'
with (CODEPAGE='RAW', FIELDTERMINATOR='|', ROWTERMINATOR='
', DATAFILETYPE='widechar')
so yeah, pretty simple. But whatever I do I get this;
Msg 4864, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk load data conversion error (type mismatch or invalid character for the specified codepage) for row 1, column 2 (GA_desc).
So what am I doing wrong ?

hello,
I am working on an application that will import data from ascii tab-delimited files into corresponding tables in a sql server 2005 express db.
The problem I am facing is that i get errors when running bulk insert.
The tables all have one extra column which is a primary key identity value.
Additionaly, the column data types include:
int, bigint, nchar, nvarchar, datetime and bit
an example table looks like this:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[counties](
[id] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[InternalID] [int] NULL,
[Active] [bit] NULL,
[Code] [nchar](10) COLLATE Greek_CI_AS NULL,
[Description] [nvarchar](50) COLLATE Greek_CI_AS NULL,
[StartDate] [datetime] NULL
)
An example data file looks like this:
InternalIDActiveCodeDescriptionDate
1 101Αι„‰Î»Î¿Î±ÎºÎ±ν16/11/1909
2 102Αγολίδο‚29/04/1949
3 103Ακαδία‚16/11/1909
4 104Ά„η‚ 16/11/1909
5 105Α„„ική‚ 26/07/1943
So, what I do is:
1. for each table I generate a character format file with the following command:
bcp mydb..table format nul -f tableformat.fmt -c -T -S hostsqlexpress
2. I modify the format file to exclude the first identity column by zeroing the field length, the column order and terminator. The resulting format file looks like this:
9.0
6
1 SQLCHAR 0 0 "" 0 id ""
2 SQLCHAR 0 12 " " 2 InternalID ""
3 SQLCHAR 0 3 " " 3 Active ""
4 SQLCHAR 0 20 " " 4 Code Greek_CI_AS
5 SQLCHAR 0 100 " " 5 Description Greek_CI_AS
6 SQLCHAR 0 24 " " 6 StartDate ""
3. I run BULK INSERT
BULK INSERT tablename
FROM dataFile
WITH (
FIRSTROW=2,
FORMATFILE = formatFile
DATAFILETYPE = 'char'
FIELDTERMINATOR=' '
ROWTERMINATOR='
'
KEEPNULLS
)
As a result of the above configuration I get this:
Msg 4864, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk load data conversion error (type mismatch or invalid character for the specified codepage) for row 2, column 5 (StartDate).
Msg 4864, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Msg 4865, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Msg 7330, Level 16, State 2, Line 1

What am I doing wrong here? With previous configurations I got errors about the BIT fields. In general, I only receive errors... The only thing that worked was with a table that only had nvarchar. Is there a fundamental mistake in what i do? I have read many posts, but nothing specific about handling different data types with bcp and bulk insert.
I would appreciate any help, as I am running out of time
Thank you.

The statement has been terminated.Is the problem something about the :OD:0A at the end of each row, rather than just the :0A??? If so, how the heck do I specify that? I think based on my testing so far (also tried '

I am still looking through archives and on the web, but have not seen anything specific to my issue yet...and cannot believe that I am the first to BULK INSERT this kind of data.
Help is appreciated!

Hi,
Iam trying to import data from a csv file into my table in SQL Server 2000. My table is called as temp_table and consists of 3 fields.
column datatype
-------- -----------
program nvarchar(20)
description nvarchar(50)
pId int
pId has been set to primary key with auto_increment.
My csv file has 2 columns of data and it looks like follows:
program, description
"prog1", "this is program1"
"prog2", "this is program2"
"prog3", "this is program3"
Now i use BULK INSERT like this
"BULK INSERT ord_programs FROM 'C:datafile.csv' WITH (FIELDTERMINATOR=',', ROWTERMINATOR='', FIRSTROW=2)"
to import data into my table in SQL server and it gives me this error
"Bulk insert data conversion error (type mismatch) for row 2, column 3 (pId)"
I guess i have to use fileformat or something since i dont have anything for pId field in the csv file to make it work...
Please help me out guys and please post a snippet of code if you have.
Thank You.

Hi,
I have a data file that has numeric data that looks like:
1.123456
And this column is defined as a DT_NUMERIC(18.6) in the flat file conn mgr.
As an experiment, I changed the destination column to a NUMERIC(18,0) - hoping that this would throw a truncation error at the flat file task level (where I have Truncation on all columns set to "fail component").
Not a peep. It loaded the data into the table, chopping off the 6 digits after the decimal point.
You would THINK that this would cause an error, but no. Why is this? The flat file task complains about all kinds of things, but this is such a gross error, you would think it would catch it!
Thanks

I have am having some issues bulk inserting from a flat file (CSV) to the database. I have also tried this by using the import and export wizard and get the following error:
I dont understand what the issue. The table that i have created looks like this:

I have in the changed the outputcolumnwidth in Ip_Adresse to 64. The length of the cells are not near 50 however i want it to be sure that its not the case. When I try to do the same in my SSIS project, i also get an error. I do get a warning: Truncation may occur due to inserting data from data flow column """"KB Available""" with a length o..... in that column there are max 5 varchar:  "yes" and "no". The  """"KB Available""" is the column name in the flat file (CSV), I have made checkmark in Column names in the first data row.Â
I have used the following guide for my SSIS project:

For Bulk Load requests in SQL server, Are there any specific profiler event? Like the one we have for RPC RPC:Starting and for Batch Requests, we have SQL:BatchStarting.
Are Bulk Load requests that are being monitored through Profiler captured as SQL:Batch... events at the backend?
Are there any new features added in 2012 or 2014 to identify a Bulk request submitted through bcp.exe utility or any other sqlbulkcopy program?

I want to load historical data from an old system into a new one.Thing is, that old system stored dates as Datetime and the new one uses DateTimeOffset.
All data was collected in the same Time Zone... but with the Daylight Saving Time (DST)
The offset is either +04:00 or +05:00, based on the calendar date. To add to the complexity, the rules for DST changed a couple of years ago.
To determine the offset, I'd need to know what was or would have been the server Timezone for each historical date.

I have a table ("MyData") with string columns that have nvarchar data that looks like this:
ColA
--------
42/90
78/109
I plan to do a mathematical grouping on the numerator (eg: 0-10,11-20,21-30, etc... ), So I need to grab the numerator and turn it into an int. For reasons I can't get into, I have to do this in pure T-SQL.
So my question: How would I write a select statement that regex pattern matches "^([0-9]+)/" on ColA and returns integers instead of text?
E.g. THis Query:
SELECT [magic t-sql syntax] as Converted_ColA from MyData
should return this set of int values:
42
78

I have a dataflow step (flat file -> Sql Server Destination), with a batch size of 2500 records. It fails consistently around 3.6 million records in, with only this error -
[SQL Server Destination [4076]] Error: Unable to prepare the SSIS bulk insert for data insertion.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PROCESSINPUTFAILED. The ProcessInput method on component "SQL Server Destination" (4076) failed with error code 0xC0202071. The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_THREADFAILED. Thread "WorkThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0202071. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the thread has exited.
[Flat File Source [1]] Error: The attempt to add a row to the Data Flow task buffer failed with error code 0xC0047020.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_THREADCANCELLED. Thread "WorkThread1" received a shutdown signal and is terminating. The user requested a shutdown, or an error in another thread is causing the pipeline to shutdown. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the thread was cancelled.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PRIMEOUTPUTFAILED. The PrimeOutput method on component "Flat File Source" (1) returned error code 0xC02020C4. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_THREADFAILED. Thread "WorkThread1" has exited with error code 0xC0047039. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the thread has exited.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_THREADFAILED. Thread "SourceThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0047038. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the thread has exited.
How can I debug this further to see what's going wrong?

I want to import the contents of a remote database every morning via a Web service to populate a data mart. I am looking for the most efficient way to do this. Step 1 is to use the Web Service Task in SSIS to grab the data and save to an XML file (since the content is far too large to store in the String data type).
For step 2, I can either use the SQLXMLBulkLoad object in VB Script to read in the file and populate the tables. Or I can using the XML Source object in Integration Services. It is clear that SQLXMLBulkLoad is the most efficient way to load data, but is the XML Source object in SSIS just a graphical representation of the SQLXMLBulkLoad object, or is it something else entirely that is inefficient because it requires loading of the XML content entirely into RAM before it can process the XML?
Any other suggestions are welcome.
SQL Server 2005 SP2.
Thank you,
Mike Chabot

I am doing a Case statement to create a unified field for account type and vendor, in the code below I am receiving the error in the subject, because the account numbers have alpha characters in the string, I need to make them as OTHER if the first 2 left chars are Alpha, I thought how I have ISNUMERIC would do that but I am still getting the error.
I am also including example of how the account_numbers are formatted.

I am facing a issue with bulk upload on Test Server.
Issue: When running Openrowset command from SQL server other that Test Server query runs fine when trying to run the same command from Test Server it gives error.
Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot bulk load because the file "\ServerNameinputFileName.csv" could not be opened. Operating system error code 5(Access is denied.).
For example: If the command is run from System A connecting to SQL Server instance on Test Server Test Server it gives this error. If the same command with same rights is run from any other SQL server instance say Dev1 its running fine.
If the command is run from Test Server connecting to any SQL Server instance including Test Server it is running fine.
Tried: 1) Given the read/write rights on shared folder, to user under which the SQL server service is running on Test Server
2) Given the read/write rights on shared folder to everyone.
Query:
SELECT DISTINCT * FROM OPENROWSET
(
BULK '\ServerNameinputFileName.csv',
FORMATFILE='\ServerNameFormat.xml'
)
AS FileList
Please provide me with some solution. What can be the reason for such behaviour?

I need to update a number of sql server tables, the data sources for these coming from a number of stored procedures. I want a generic way of getting the data and then passing this data to the tables.I am thinking of doing this for each table:Populating a datasetWriting this dataset to XMLUsing SQLXML Bulk Load to pass this XML to the database to updateI can create the xml data file by:
dataset.WriteXml("C:data.xml")The problem I have is that the example (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/316005/en-us) I looked at relies on the schema being defined:<?xml version="1.0" ?><Schema xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-data" xmlns:dt="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml:datatypes" xmlns:sql="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-sql" > <ElementType name="CustomerId" dt:type="int" /> <ElementType name="CompanyName" dt:type="string" /> <ElementType name="City" dt:type="string" /> <ElementType name="ROOT" sql:is-constant="1"> <element type="Customers" /> </ElementType> <ElementType name="Customers" sql:relation="Customer"> <element type="CustomerId" sql:field="CustomerId" /> <element type="CompanyName" sql:field="CompanyName" /> <element type="City" sql:field="City" /> </ElementType></Schema>Is there any way I can create the schema 'on the fly' similar to how I did for the data source file.As I could then pass these files to the database:objBL.Execute ("schema.xml","data.xml");

--> Check Deployment Mode (SQLSERVER2012POWERPIVOT): Pass.

how can I update my analysis server version that doesn't affect anything else?
should I install a CU on my SQL or upgrade it?

We have a file import job. This job typically imports millions of records into a SQL2008 DB. After the load the DB performance goes down the drain. Thus far, their solution has been to rebuild indexes on effected tables. I'd like to come up with a better solution. My guess is that after the load, the statistics are shot until the next stats update.
What is the best way to handle this scenario? There must be some way to keep the stats current during a big data load.

I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.
I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.
I hope someone can help me work through this.
Thanks in advance,
SK
