SQL Server 2012 :: How To Group Near Duplicate Records Under A New Common Field

Aug 26, 2015

I've inherited a table of members that has the following structure:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[dimMember](
[dimMemberId] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[dimSourceSystemId] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_dimMember_dimSourceSystemId] DEFAULT ((-1)),
[MemberCode] [nvarchar](50) NOT NULL,
[FirstName] [nvarchar](250) NOT NULL,
[LastName] [nvarchar](250) NOT NULL,

[Code] ....

Based on the way the data loads into the table there's a possibility of some records being near duplicates of each other. For example, we can have a member that has records that have the same first name, last name, SSN, but different addresses, membercodes, subscribercode etc... This can happen in pretty much any variation thereof.

What I want to do, is add a new column and use that to group the similar records under based on comparing on several columns. By this I mean, if a member matches 4 of the 7 values below with another member, we would group these:

First Name (1st 3 characters)
Last Name
DOB
CurrentAddress1
MemberCode
SSN
SubscriberCode

I'm at a loss of how to structure the SQL to update the new column in the table.

SQL Server 2012 :: Select Statement - Finding Duplicate Records

Feb 18, 2014

I am trying to build a select statement that will

1). find records where a duplicate field exists.
2.) show the ItemNo of records where the Historical data is ' '.

I have the query which shows me the duplicates but I'm stuck when trying to only show records where the Historical field = ' '.

Originally I thought I could accomplish this goal with a sub query based off of the original duplicate result set but SQL server returns an error.

Below you will find a temp table to create and try in your environment.

create table #Items
(
ItemNovarchar (50),
SearchNo varchar (50),
Historical int

[Code] ....

Ultimately I need a result set that returns 'ATMR10 MFZ N', and 'QBGFEP2050 CH DIS'.

Group By Query To Find Duplicate Field Value

Jul 23, 2001

Hello,

Not sure how to do this. I think I need to use a Group By query. I have a "Products" table with the following fields:

Program#
Number
UPC
Item
Item#
Size
Dept

Everything is specific to the Program#. In other words, for every instance of a Program# there can be more than one Product, which is specified by the "Number" field. So: SELECT * FROM Product WHERE [Program#] = '12345' should return this:

12345 | 1 | 000012345678 | Cookies | 98765 | 12ct | Retail |
12345 | 2 | 000012345678 | Cake | 98765 | 12ct | Retail |
12345 | 3 | 000012345678 | Ice Cream | 98765 | 12ct | Retail |

However, some recordsets are returning like this:

12345 | 1 | 000012345678 | Cookies | 98765 | 12ct | Retail
12345 | 1 | 000012345678 | Cake | 98765 | 12ct | Retail
12345 | 2 | 000012345678 | Ice Cream | 98765 | 12ct | Retail

In which case I have to fix them (the "Number" field) with an update query sp they are numbered sequentially. Luckily, this doesn't happen very often.

Can someone help me with a query that will return only those records with duplicate values in the "Number" field? I am not sure how to construct this query which I will use as a stored procedure.

TIA,

Select Records That Do Not Duplicate On A Certain Field.

Mar 15, 2004

I am looking for some help in pulling certain people out of a table

This is the basic setup of my table

PK ID NAME MEETING
1 11111 Joe CLASS98
2 22222 Jane CLASS98
3 33333 Bob CLASS98
4 11111 Joe CLASS04
5 22222 Jane CLASS04
6 44444 Sally CLASS04

What I am wanting to do is Select only the people who attended CLASS98 but didn't attend CLASS04

I could just remove the CLASS04 people by sorting if I could just return the rows that do not duplicate the ID and meeting is either CLASS04 or CLASS98

Either way would get me to my goal.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

SQL Server 2012 :: Pattern Matching (positive Across Records - Negative Within A Field)

Jan 6, 2015

I am doing some analysis on our customer base and their payment profiles. I have generated two profile strings, one for whether the balance of an account has gone up or down and one for the size of the balance in relation to the normal invoice amount for the customer. So (for example) the balance movement string will look like this:

UUUDUUUDUUUD-D00 Where U = Up, D = Down, - = no change and 0 = no change and no balance

I want to analyse these strings in two ways. The first is that I want to find customers with a similar pattern: in the example below the first and last patterns are the same, just one out of sync but should be considered the same

Movement Multiple CountRecords
UUUDUUUDUUUD1230123012301175
------------0000000000001163
UDUUUDUUUDUU3012301230121082

The second type of analysis is to find customers whose pattern has changed: in the examples above the patterns are repeated and therefore 'normal' in the records below the patterns have changed in that the first part does not match the second part.

Movement Multiple CountRecords
UUDUUUDUUUUU-----------07
UDUUUDUUUUUU------------7

good way to approach this without either a cursor or a hidden REBAR. The challenge as I see it is that I have to interrogate every string to find out if there is a repeating pattern and if so where it starts and how long it is (heuristic because some strings will start with a repeating pattern and then the pattern may change or deteriorate) and then compare the string for N groups of repeating characters to see if and when it changes and I can't think of an efficient method to do this in SQL because it is not a set based operation.

SQL 2012 :: Group By On Consecutive Records?

Apr 4, 2015

Problem 1: I have the following table which shows the location of a person at 1 hour intervals

IdEntityIDEntityNameLocationIDTimexdelta
11MickeyClub house03001
21MickeyClub house04001
31MickeyPark05002
41MickeyMinnies Boutique06003
51MickeyMinnies Boutique07003
61MickeyClub house08004
71MickeyClub house09004
81MickeyPark10005
91MickeyClub house11006

The delta increments by +1 every time the location changes.

I would like to return an aggregate grouped by delta as per example below.

EntityNameLocationIDStartTimeEndTime
MickeyClub house03000500
MickeyPark05000600
MickeyMinnies Boutique06000800
MickeyClub house08001000
MickeyPark10001100
MickeyClub house11001200

I am using the following query (which works fine):

select
min(timex) as start_date
,end_date
,entityid
,entityname
,locationid

[code]....

However I would like to not use the delta (it takes effort to calculate and populate it); instead I am wondering if there is any way to calculate it as part / whilst running the query.

Problem 2:I have the following table which shows the location of different people at 1 hour intervals

IdEntityIDEntityNameLocationIDTimexDelta
11MickeyClub house09001
21MickeyClub house10001
31MickeyPark11002
42DonaldClub house09001
52DonaldPark10002
62DonaldPark11002
73GoofyPark09001
83GoofyClub house10002
93GoofyPark11003

I would like to return an aggregate grouped by person and location.

For example

EntityIDEntityNameLocationIDStartTimeEndTime
1MickeyClub house09001100
1MickeyPark11001200
2DonaldClub house09001000
2DonaldPark10001200
3GoofyPark09001000
3GoofyClub house10001100
3GoofyPark11001200

What modifications do I need to the above query (Problem 1)?

I have a multi-tenant database where each row and each table has a 'TenantId' column. I have created a view which has joins on a CTE. The issue I'm having is that entity framework will do a SELECT * FROM MyView WHERE TenantId = 50 to limit the result set to the correct tenant. However it does not limit the CTE to the same TenantId so that result set is massive and makes my view extremely slow. In the included example you can see with the commented line what I need to filter on in the CTE but I am not sure how to get the sql plan executor to understand this or weather it's even possible.I have included a simplified view definition to demonstrate the issue...

SQL Server 2012 :: Find Common Link Between Two Tables In Database Without Key Constraints?

Jul 17, 2015

CREATE TABLE [Table 1] (
Id varchar,
TableTwoId varchar,
OtherData varchar )
CREATE TABLE [Table 2] (
Id varchar,
MoreData varchar )

What is the link between these two tables?

I have databases that have zero keys defined, no foreign key constraints, no unique value constraints. I cannot assume that an Identity column is the Id. The end game is be able to output that [Table 1].[TableTwoId] = [Table 2].[Id] but cannot assume that all linkage in the database will be as simple as saying "if the field name contains a table name + Id then it is the Id in that table."

Currently have written a script that will cycle through all columns and start identifying keys in singular tables based on the distinctness of the values in each column (i.e. Column1 is 99% distinct so is the unique value). It will also combine columns if the linkage is the combination of one or more columns from Table 1 = the same number of columns in Table 2. This takes a long time, and it somewhat unreliable as IDENTITY columns may seem to relate to one another when they don't.

CREATE TABLE DUPLICATE OBJECT/DUPLICATE FIELD NAME ERROR Msg 2714

Oct 2, 2007

Hello Everyone:

I am using the Import/Export wizard to import data from an ODBC data source. This can only be done from a query to specify the data to transfer.

When I try to create the tables, for the query, I am getting the following error:

Msg 2714, Level 16, State 4, Line 12

There is already an object named 'UserID' in the database.

Msg 1750, Level 16, State 0, Line 12

Could not create constraint. See previous errors.

I have duplicated this error with the following script:

USE [testing]

IF OBJECT_ID ('[testing].[dbo].[users1]', 'U') IS NOT NULL

DROP TABLE [testing].[dbo].[users1]

CREATE TABLE [testing].[dbo].[users1] (

[UserID] bigint NOT NULL,

[Name] nvarchar(25) NULL,

CONSTRAINT [UserID] PRIMARY KEY (UserID)

)

IF OBJECT_ID ('[testing].[dbo].[users2]', 'U') IS NOT NULL

DROP TABLE [testing].[dbo].[users2]

CREATE TABLE [testing].[dbo].[users2] (

[UserID] bigint NOT NULL,

[Name] nvarchar(25) NULL,

CONSTRAINT [UserID] PRIMARY KEY (UserID)

)

IF OBJECT_ID ('[testing].[dbo].[users3]', 'U') IS NOT NULL

DROP TABLE [testing].[dbo].[users3]

CREATE TABLE [testing].[dbo].[users3] (

[UserID] bigint NOT NULL,

[Name] nvarchar(25) NULL,

CONSTRAINT [UserID] PRIMARY KEY (UserID)

)

I have searched the "2714 duplicate error msg," but have found references to duplicate table names, rather than multiple field names or column name duplicate errors, within a database.

I think that the schema is only allowing a single UserID primary key.

How do I fix this?

TIA

Writing ETL Error Records To A Common Table

Jun 13, 2007

I am working on building a template/design pattern for a DTS to SSIS upgrade project.

During our ETL processing, if we encounter a record that cannot be inserted into a destination table, we'd like to be able to write the entire record out to a common error/reject table. The obvious problem is that every SSIS package that is using this template will of course be dealing with varying table schemas.

I was thinking that if there were a way that I could transform the error record/buffer row into XML, I could then achieve my goal of having a common table to receive errors/rejects.

Has anyone done something like this, or have suggestions on how we might accomplish?

Common(?) Problem For Updating A Text Field!

Apr 21, 2008

Hello, I have an aspx page with a text box. The user may enter a large portion of text including symbols like ' or ". On form submitting I would like a database (text or varchar(MAX) ) field to be updated with the value of the text box...The query that I have created for this purpose is the following: "string query ="UPDATE Article SET A_Content='" + content + "' WHERE A_Id=" + id; As I said before the user may (and in most cases must) enter special characters like ' (example: bla bla blah it's very good bla bla blah). The problem is that ' or " close the query string (SQL) and interpreter things that I am reffering to a field's name instead of the fields value (I think) resulting the following error:The identifier that starts with...is too long.Maximum length is 128.Unclosed quotation mark after the character string ...I think that it must be a very common problem with many solutions but for some reason I cant find anything on the web. What is the common practice to overcome the problem? Is there a function that might transform text into SQL acceptable text?Should I create methods for Replacing ' with other characters like ^^^ (text can be quite big...)?Thanx for any suggestions!

Join A Table With Different Tables But With A Field In Common?

Jan 27, 2014

I have a table activity which show the activities of the site. An activity could be related with no other entity or it could be related with an account, or with a contact or with an opportunity. An opportunity and a contact could be also related with an account.

My problem is that I need to show the activity and the related account (if there is any) but because the relationship with an account could be done by different ways, I dont know how to do it without join the account table several times.

This is my current query:

SELECT AC.IdActividad, CU.idcuenta
FROM Actividades AC LEFT JOIN Tareas TA ON TA.IdActividad = C.IdActividad
LEFT JOIN ActividadesXCuenta AXC ON AC.IdActividad = AXC.IdActividad LEFT JOIN dbo.Cuentas CU ON axc.IdCuenta = CU.IdCuenta
LEFT JOIN dbo.ActividadesXOportunidad axo ON AC.IdActividad = axo.IdActividad LEFT JOIN dbo.Oportunidades o ON axo.IdOportunidad = o.IdOportunidad LEFT JOIN dbo.Cuentas CU1 ON o.IdCuenta = CU.IdCuenta
LEFT JOIN dbo.ActividadesXContacto axco ON AC.IdActividad = axco.IdActividad LEFT JOIN dbo.Contactos con ON axco.IdContacto = con.IdContacto LEFT JOIN dbo.Cuentas CU2 ON o.IdCuenta = CU.IdCuenta

As you see, I have the table Cuenta joined 3 times. That means that I need to put the ActivityID field 3 times but based on how the report was developed, I could not do that.

Check 2 Tables A Delete Records Based On Common Fi

Aug 8, 2007

I'm kinda embarrased, it's been quite awhile since I've played with SQL or Access but here's my brain fart. I need to open an access DB by the name of eHomes. Inside there are two tables AD_IMAGE & PROPERTY. Property is the main table and stores most of the info. It has a field in it called AD_ID and others except for the image file name. The AD_IMAGE table just keeps the image file name and has 3 fields: ID - AD_ID - & Image1. The problem is when the ad is deleted from the property table the AD_IMAGE table record referring to the PROPERTY.AD_ID doen't get deleted. So, I just want the AD_IMAGE table cleaned up to match what's active in the PROPERTY table using the common AD_ID fields in both tables.
