SQL Server 2012 :: How To Modify ORDER BY Clause At Runtime Using Parameter

Jun 4, 2015

the code below works (this is only a quick dumbed down version of the actual code, it might not work 100% for all cases). Is it at all possible to exploit the functions that were added to SSQL since v. 2005 to simplify this code ?

In SSRS, a parameter allows the user to create a list of invoices (from CRM) to be ordered in any of the following ways the user prefers:

'Document Date (most recent date first)'
'Document Number (highest number first)'
'Document Date (most recent first) and Number'
'Document Number (lowest number first)'

The invoices have a (supposedly) sequential identity-generated number. However Accounting may want to set a different date than the creation date on some invoices. So there is no way the invoice numbers will be in the same sequence as the invoice dates.

So I just created the "sorting fields" - they appear as junk in the output dataset (just do not drop them in the SSRS tablix - they have to be part of the SELECT statement to be usable in the ORDER BY clause.

The code is:

DECLARE @ls_OrderBy varchar(80)
--'Document Number (highest number first)'
--'Customer and Document Date (most recent date first)'
--'Customer and Document Number (highest number first)'
--'Document Date (most recent first) and Number'

SQL Server 2012 :: How To Order By Using Parameter Value

Jul 15, 2014

I have a stored procedure that I would like to order by the order of the parameters it takes in starting for current item number 1, prior item number 1, current item number 2, prior item number 2, and so on.

currently I am ordering it by:

c.CurrentItemNumber
, p.PriorItemNumber

among other fields, but I would like to replace the part above with the parameters 1 through 5 (current and prior).

Is this possible?

This is my stored procedure for reference:

How To Pass Dynamic Parameter To Order BY Clause

Sep 13, 2004

Hi,

I use a DataGrid to show the data, and I want it has a sorting and Paging function,
so I use dataset to collect the data from middle tier function and stored procedure.
I have code in aspx page like BindData(ViewState("SortExpr")).

In the stored procedure I pass SortExpr as parameter as following:

CREATE Procedure Ruying_AutoSearch10
(
@Make varchar(50),
@Model varchar(50) = NULL,
@Condition varchar(20) = NULL,
@Miles float,
@Zipcode varchar(5),
@SortExpr varchar(100)
)
AS

DECLARE @RowCount int
SELECT @RowCount = Count(*) FROM ZIPCodes WHERE ZIPCode = @Zipcode AND CityType = 'D'

if @RowCount > 0
BEGIN
SELECT
z.ZIPCode, z.City, z.StateCode, a.Make, a.Model, a.AutoPrice, a.AutoPrice2, a.AutoYear, a.Mileage, a.AdID, a.ImageURL, dbo.DistanceAssistant(z.Latitude,z.Longitude,r.Latitude,r.Longitude) As Distance
/*
The above functions requires the Distance Assistant.
*/
FROM
ZIPCodes z, RadiusAssistant(@ZIPCode,@Miles) r, AutoAd a
WHERE
z.Latitude <= r.MaxLat
AND z.Latitude >= r.MinLat
AND z.Longitude <= r.MaxLong
AND z.Longitude >= r.MinLong
AND z.CityType = 'D'
AND z.ZIPCodeType <> 'M'
AND z.ZIPCode = a.Zipcode
AND a.AdActive = '1'
AND a.AdExpiredate >= getdate()
AND a.Make = @Make
AND a.Model = IsNull(@Model,a.Model)
AND a.Condition = IsNull(@Condition, a.Condition)
AND dbo.DistanceAssistant(z.Latitude,z.Longitude,r.Latitude,r.Longitude) <= @Miles
ORDER BY @SortExpr
END
ELSE
SELECT -1 As ZIPCode
--ZIP Code not found...
GO

but I got the error as "variables are only allowed when ordering by an expression referenceing
a column name". How I fix this error? Please help.

Thanks.

Let me know if I am not clear.

SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT dbo.UWYearDetail.*, dbo.UWYearGroup.*
FROM dbo.UWYearDetail INNER JOIN
dbo.UWYearGroup ON dbo.UWYearDetail.UWYearGroupId = dbo.UWYearGroup.UWYearGroupId
ORDER BY dbo.UWYearDetail.PlanVersionId, dbo.UWYearGroup.UWFinancialPlanSegmentId, dbo.UWYearGroup.UWYear, dbo.UWYearGroup.MandDFlag,
dbo.UWYearGroup.EarningsMethod, dbo.UWYearGroup.EffectiveMonth

If I run sql the results are displayed in proper order but the view only order by first item in order by clause.

Has somebody experience same thing? How to fix this issue?

Inconsistent Sort Order Using ORDER BY Clause

Product: Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition
Version: 9.00.1399.06
Server Collation: SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS

for example,

create table test_sort
( description varchar(75) );

insert into test_sort values('Non-A');
insert into test_sort values('Non-O');
insert into test_sort values('Noni');
insert into test_sort values('Nons');

then execute the following selects:
select
*
from
test_sort
order by
cast( 1 as nvarchar(75));

select
*
from
test_sort
order by
cast( description as nvarchar(75));

Resultset1

Non-A
Non-O
Noni

Resultset2

Modify Message Order In Queue?

Jun 12, 2007

Is it possible to modify the sequence of messages in a SSB queue? Or to create messages so that their sequence is based on a value in the message rather than the order in which they were sent to the queue?

I am trying to determine if SSB will help me solve a situation where BizTalk needs to process a prescribed sequence of messages that may not be received in the correct order. (i.e. I need to resequence the messages). Each message contains a field with the sequence number and also a field identifying the total number of messages in the sequence.

I realise that the Sequential Convoy Aggregrator EAI pattern can potentially provide a solution to this, or even the Sequence Guards pattern by McGeeky, but I guess I was hoping that SSB might provide a slightly more efficient solution(?)

INSERT INTO OPENROWSET Does Not Respect ORDER BY Clause On SQL Server 2005 EE

Jul 3, 2007

Hi,
I need to pass data from a SQL Server data base to an Access data base. To do this I use the OPENROWSET as followed:
FR

INSERT INTO OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'C:Aux.mdb'; 'Admin'; '',Test) (Id, Name, TypeId) SELECT Id,Name,TypeId
FROM Test
ORDER BY TypeId

FR

On SQL Server 2000 or MSDE the data is transfered as expected, respecting the specified order. But when I run the same clause on a SQL 2005 EE the data is transfered, but the order is not respected.
So my question is if I have to activate an option for the order to be respected or if this is a bug.

Best regards,

How To Modify A Report's Parameter ?

Hello !

In an "Windows Forms" project using VisualBasic 2005, I need to modify a parameter value in a report (.rdlc).
In this report, called "RapportDeVente.rdlc", I have defined a parameter "rptPar_ProsID" as integer.
I have included an control "ReportViewer" in a form called "Impression.vb".
In another form used to select the report's parameters, I want to modify a parameter's value from a TextBox "txbProsID". I write this code :
...

Imports Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms
...

Dim frmRapportDeVenteViewer As New Impression
...

frmRapportDeVenteViewer.ReportViewer.LocalReport.ReportEmbeddedResource = "winMATcom.RapportDeVente.rdlc"

Dim rds As New ReportDataSource("ProspectsDataSet_Prospects", Me.ProspectsDataSet.Prospects())

frmRapportDeVenteViewer.ReportViewer.LocalReport.DataSources.Add(rds)

Dim p As New ReportParameter("rptPar_ProsID", txbProsID.Text())

frmRapportDeVenteViewer.ReportViewer.LocalReport.SetParameters(p)

...

I obtain this Warning about var "p ":
"Warning 1 Implicit cast of 'Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportParameter' as 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable(Of Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportParameter)'."

When I read the documentation it seems correct !?...

What is my error, How correct it ?

Verify Parameter Values At Runtime

May 5, 2008

I have a report that has three parameters. View, Tier and Manager. The View parameter has 3 possible choices: Company, Manager and Tier. If the user selects Company then they cannot select anything in the other two parameters. If the user selects Manager from the View parameter then they can only select something for the Manager parameter. Likewise, if they choose Tier from the View parameter they can only select something for the Tier parameter.

This is all working like I want it and provides the desired results. However, if a user selects Tier for the View parameter and then doesn't select anything for the Tier parameter it is just like selecting Company from the View parameter. What I'd like to do is have error checking so that if they do choose Tier from the View parameter and then try and run the report and Tier is still null have it indicate that they have to choose a tier.

To get the first part of this to work I had to create datasets that contained just a null and then default Manager and Tier to that dataset. Choosing the default of Null in the parameter set up didn't work.

I think the error checking could look something like this:

=IIf(Parameters!View.Value = "Tier" AND IsNothing(Parameters!tier.Value) , "Must Select Tier", Parameters!tier.Value)

Now, I just need to know where to put it. Is there something that it will look at before generating the report to check the values of parameters. Maybe like the NoRows property when no rows are returned?

SQL Server 2012 :: Using Parameterized Query With Like In Where Clause

Feb 4, 2014

From MS Dynamics NAV 2013 I get a lot of querries that have a where clause like this:

where [Field1] like @p1 and [Field1] < @p2.
Field1 is the only primary key field and clustered index. The query also has a TOP 50 clause.
@p1 is always a "Starts-With"-value (something like N'abc%').

The query plan uses a clustered index seek but the number of reads look more like a clustered index scan.

Depending on the table size I see 1M or more reads for these querries.

If I rebuild the query in SSMS, but replace the paramerters with actual values I only see a few reads.

I was able to reproduce the issue with a temp table. See code below.

Is there a way to make SQL Server use another strategy when using the parameterized query?

SQL Server Version is 11.0.3401.
if object_id('tempdb..#tbl') is not null
drop table #tbl;
create table #tbl
(
[No] nvarchar(20)
,[Description1] nvarchar(250)

SQL Server 2012 :: Where Clause On Multiple Columns?

May 16, 2014

Right now I have to do something like this and it is time consuming every time I have to query a specific table...

SELECT lots_of_columns
FROM table
WHERE (column5 = '1' OR column6 = '1' OR column7 = '1' OR column8 = '1' OR column9 = '1' OR column10 = '1' OR column11 = '1' OR column12 = '1')
AND other_query_critiera_here

Typing out the OR statement gets long, time consuming and prone to errors because that first where line with all the ORs can sometimes have 20+ ORs in it. As some insight, the columns are text columns, sometimes they have data, sometimes they are NULL. Sometimes they have the same data (i.e., column5 and column6 and column12 could both have '1' as values).

SQL Server 2012 :: Combine Functionality Of IN And LIKE In WHERE Clause

May 8, 2015

I would like to be able to combine the functionality of IN and LIKE in a WHERE clause. Although the simple AdventureWorks2012 example below illustrates the concept with 3 search criteria, the real-world example I need to apply the concept to has a couple dozen. This returns 50 rows, but requires multiple OR ... LIKE functions:

SELECT DISTINCT c.Name
FROM Sales.Store c
WHERE c.Name LIKE '% sports %'
OR c.Name LIKE '% exercise %'
OR c.Name LIKE '%toy%'

What I would like to do is something like this, which doesn't work:

SELECT DISTINCT c.Name
FROM Sales.Store c
WHERE c.Name IN(LIKE '% sports %', LIKE '% exercise %', LIKE '%toy%')

I could load up a cursor and loop through it, but the syntax is more cumbersome than the multiple LIKE statements, not to mention most SQL programmers are horrified at the mention of the abominable word 'cursor' for performance reasons.

SQL Server 2012 :: Using WHERE Clause For Report Generation

Sep 11, 2015

Because of the way in which a specific piece of code is written, I'm bound into using a WHERE clause for a report generation.Each Inspection generates a unique Inspection Number. Any re-inspection created from that inspection is assigned that Inspection Number and appended with ".A", ".B", ".C" and so on.

The problem is this: Each row's Primary Key is the "InspectionId" in "dbo.v_InspectionDetailsReports". I need to return not only the data related to that particular InspectionId, but also the data related to any previous related inspection. For example, if I have a main number of CCS-2012 and three re-inspections, CCS-2012.A, CCS-2012.B and CCS-2012.C, and I report on CCS-2012.B, I need all the data for CCS-2012, CCS-2012.A and CCS-2012.B but NOT CCS-2012.C.

I would prefer to not have to do everything in a WHERE statement, but my hands are a bit tied.

The "SELECT * FROM dbo.v_InspectionDetailsReports WHERE . . ." is already hardcoded (don't ask).
SELECT *
FROM dbo.v_InspectionDetailsReports

Do you think there is a good way to do it in batch and take original source from system.tables (even we have this as physical file in VSS)?

Surely enough <IF Exists then drop> is not uniformed, could be variations with syntax and on diff number of lines, IF Exists... vs OBJECT_ID is not null etc...

The code works -- that is, the duplicate row is deleted. However the output clause returns:

So....why? Why does the output clause show that the row with rn=1 was deleted, when the where clause stipulates rn > 1?

what is the reason behind this.
