In a stored procedure I dynamically create a temp table by selecting the name of Applications from a regular table. Then I add a date column and add the last 12 months. See attachment.
So far so good. Now I want to update the data in columns by querying another regular table. Normally it would be something like:
UPDATE ##TempTable
SET [columName] = (SELECT SUM(columName)
FROM RegularTable
WHERE FORMAT(RegularTable.Date,'MM/yyyy') = FORMAT(##TempMonths.x,'MM/yyyy'))
However, since I don't know what the name of the columns are at any given time, I need to do this dynamically.
how can I get the column names of a Temp table dynamically while doing an Update?

Is there a way in SQL server to alias column names for a particular table and store the aliases somewhere such that you can access the aliases while querying? I have a table where I cannot change column names and I am trying to figure out if there is a way to alias them to make them more user friendly.

I need to ensure some naming standards to users while creating tables.
All table name should be in same pattern
(ie., ) TeamName_EmpId_tablename
I need a way to restrict user to follow the naming standard. If any user tries to create table without the above naming standard system should not allow.

I am trying to replace names found in 'xml' field name as hyperlinks, by matching with the names in database_tags.I am using the following function below, however the UDF is only recognizing one name from the XML fieldname data, instead of all the names present in the XML data.
ALTER FUNCTION [dbo].[ReplaceTags](@XML VARCHAR(MAX))
RETURNS VARCHAR(MAX)
AS
BEGIN
[code]...
for example, if the XML input data is the following: It consists of: BANKP, BCJA, BCJAM, BFTH, BFTH, and EMPOP.But the updated function is only recognizing two of names BFTH, BFTH, as hyperlinks, from the database_tags table.Is there a way to get the function to recognize more than one names as hyperlinks.

Hi, I am new to using SQL for anything more in depth than querying and reporting.
I am trying to create a series of SQL scripts which will be used across several customer sites so need to be easily customisable. What I want to do is have all of the table names, field names and customisable items handled by variables which will be declared and set at the beginning of the script, making them easy to find and change. The problem I am having at the moment is with creating a new table using variables for table name and field names, can anyone help?
quote:
DECLARE
@a_tmptbl varchar(15),
@a_fieldid1 varchar(15)
set @a_fieldid1 = 'newFieldid'
set @a_tmptbl = 'newTable'
create table @a_tmptbl ( @a_fieldid1 varchar(15), value float, counter INT);
insert into @a_tmptbl values ( "foobar", 21.76, 1);
select * from @a_tmptbl;
The error I am getting is:
quote:Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 8
Line 8: Incorrect syntax near '@a_tmptbl'.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 10
Must declare the variable '@a_tmptbl'.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 12

Any advice would be gratefully accepted

My query returns fields that have spaces in the names, for example:
select o.OrderID as 'INVOICE NUMBER', etc..
When I created the DataSet for this query in report designer, it changed all spaces in the field names to underscores, i.e. INVOICE_NUMBER.
This report must be exported to CSV, and the names of the fields (first row in csv) must have the spaces, not underscores. But it appears RS uses the field names (not the names in the column headers of the report table control) as the field names. Is there any way for me to force the field names in the first row of the csv to something other than the field names in the DataSet?
Thanks!

I've called a resultset from SQL Server
using an SQL Selection. I need to iterate over that entire result set
(200+ columns/fields) and all I need are the random numbers contained
in any of the rows/columns. I don't want to have to name each
field/column and then use an if > 0 statement.Isn't there
some way to generically loop through the column's by index or something
instead of their field name so I can just use an integer loop to walk
the dataset? I know there is I've done it about 5 years ago. The
question is how do you do it in C#?SqlConnection thisConn = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["SQLQuery"].ConnectionString); SqlCommand thisCmd = new SqlCommand("Command String", thisConn); thisCmd.CommandText = "Select * from SelectionsByCountry where [" + DropDownList1.SelectedItem.ToString() + "] > '0'"; thisConn.Open(); SqlDataReader thisReader = null; thisReader = thisCmd.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection); while (thisReader.Read()) { DropDownList2.Items.Add(thisReader["System"].ToString().Trim());/*** There are 200+ columns left I want to walk over using a loop structure of some sort. How do I do that?*/ }- Rex

We have a hierarchical table of some 2-3k of rows that grows slowly at only 3-5 rows a month, and is never likely to be above 5k, holding file/directory names with an IdParent int value pointing at that items immediate parent or NULL if root
Below is a sample:
Id Name IdParent
1 C: NULL
2 D: NULL
3 ProgramFiles 1
4 DataFiles 2
5 Excel.EXE 3
6 MyDataList.CSV 4
iterative code required to achieve the result I am looking for is best handled in the Application layer, but in this case the design brief is that we must get our results back as a View. Speed of execution and code clarity are secondary 'icing on the cake' issues.
I have tried recursive CTE's and XML FOR solutions but without success, and while I feel the latter is probably the best all rounder the searches I have made and the examples I have read do not seem to solve this particular issue.
Even to find the starting point of the search tree (i.e. the .EXE and the .CSV items) was difficult because the final slash is optional in some of the rows (.e. row 4)
The end result of my view on the above data should return:
Id FilePath
5 C:ProgramFilesExcel.EXE
6 D:DataFilesMyDataList.CSV (note the adding of the missing delimiter between DataFiles and MyDataList)

Table TeacherCard: field ID, foreign key on table Librarians and other fields, which we don't use
Query: Select the librarian's surname, which gave the most count of books.
I know, how to resolve, when i took datas only from one table, e. g. TeacherCard
SELECT TOP 1 WITH TIES Librarians.LastName, MAX(Librarians.CountOfBooks) AS Books FROM
(SELECT L.LastName, COUNT(*) AS CountOfBooks FROM Libs L, T_Cards T
WHERE T.Id_Lib IN (SELECT L.Id)
GROUP BY L.LastName) AS Librarians
GROUP BY Librarians.LastName
ORDER BY MAX(Librarians.CountOfBooks) DESC
GO

For example in a table with this fields "field1, L1,L3,L100" field2 the count is 3
it would be better to match a number into the like but i thinks it cannot be done in the like so i've to add another condition to ensure all the text after L is a number.
is this the best way to do it?
Select count(*) from Information_Schema.Columns Where Table_Name = @Table
AND column_name like 'L%' and ISNUMERIC(SUBSTRING(column_name,2, len(column_name)-1))=1

Using MSSQL 2012
I have a simple select query and I need to eliminate records whose values from 2 different fields match. I thought I had this working, but if one of those fields in my data IS NULL it filters out those records. If I comment out my last line then my number record shows, if I include that statement that record drops. The only thing I see in my data is the Name and PName are both NULL in the data for that particular number. Just need to filter out any records where it finds those 3 Names that also have "Default" as the PName, then include everything else even if Name or Pname is NULL.
Below is my where clause.
WHERE [DETERMINATION] <> 'Denied'
AND [Number] ='A150731000039'
---- Removes incorrect records where these names match----
AND ([Name] NOT IN ('GLASSMAN','NANCY','LUDEMANN') AND [PName] = 'DEFAULT')

Pardon me if this question is too elementary. I am trying to create a trigger that will cause certain datafields to be updated with values from other data fields in the same row when a certain column, created specifically to fire the trigger, is updated. The purpose of this is to reduce data entry by field personnel.I think I have the create trigger statement correct, but I'm a little confused on the update statement.
In a nutshell, how can I write something like:
UPDATE "TABLENAME"
SET DATAFIELD1 = DATAFIELD2
WHERE RECORDNUMBER = (THE SAME RECORD NUMBER)
I do know that I have to ensure that sp_dboption Recursive Triggers value is set to false, thanks.
