SQL Server 2012 :: Saving Query Text / Execution Time And Rows Count

Jun 3, 2014

I want to save every query executed from a given software, let's say Multi Script for example, and save in a table query text, execution time and rows count among other possible useful information. Right now I've created a sp and a job that runs every 1 milliseconds but I can't figure out how to get execution time and rows count. Another problem with this is that if the query takes too long I end up with several rows in my table.

SQL Server 2012 :: Stored Proc Execution Time Diff Between Environments

Jul 3, 2015

I have a stored proc that is executing in 2 sec on production and test database. It is taking more than a min on dev environment.

I have verified sqlserver version is same on both of the server.Prod is running on 2012Sp1 however dev don't have sp1. I am downloading it.

Both are 64bit, has same collation and compatibility level.I have confirmed that sp on both servers has same execution plan. I have reset and import stats from prod too.

I would like to compare the results from today and yesterday to see if anyone deleted more than 20% of data from any given table. How would I do this? I really don't need the data anymore than a day just to compare the results.

Mon - Run script to collect row count
Tues - Run script to collect current row into temp table
,compare all row count in both tables
,purge records from Monday and insert current
Wed - Run script to collect current row into temp table

SQL Server 2012 :: List Catalog Reports With No Execution History Returns 0 Rows

Feb 13, 2015

comparing UNIQUEIDENTIFIER columns..This query returns several rows where the [ReportId] and [LastRunDate] columns are both NULL:

SELECT [c].[Name],[c].[ItemID],[xl].[ReportID]
, MAX([TimeStart]) [LastRunDate]
FROM [dbo].[Catalog] [c]
LEFT JOIN [dbo].[ExecutionLogStorage] [xl] on [c].[ItemID] = [xl].[ReportID]
WHERE [c].[Type] NOT IN (1,5) -- Not a folder or a data source!
group by [c].[Name],[c].[ItemID],[xl].[ReportID]
order by 4

However, trying to just list catalog reports with no execution history returns 0 rows, but I'm expecting it to return a row for every NULL [ReportId] from the above query:

SELECT *
FROM [dbo].[Catalog]
WHERE [Type] NOT IN (1,5) -- Not a folder or a data source!
AND [ItemID] NOT IN (SELECT [ReportID] FROM [dbo].[ExecutionLogStorage])

I even tried casting [ItemId] and [ReportId] columns in the 2nd query to VARCHAR(255), and still got no rows, but the following queries return 0 rows and 1 row (respectively).

select * from [dbo].[ExecutionLogStorage] where [ReportID] = '0BB2209C-7736-46C8-AD02-4614EBA4F0F1'
select * from [dbo].[Catalog] where [ItemID] = '0BB2209C-7736-46C8-AD02-4614EBA4F0F1'

SQL 2012 :: Data Collection And Daylight Saving Time

Oct 26, 2015

Last weekend many of our severs had a failed job "collection_set_3_upload". The error that occured is: "Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_ active_ sessions_ and_requests'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'snapshots.active_sessions_and_requests'. The duplicate key value is (2824333, 2015-10-25 02:54:49.7630000 +02:00, 1)."Last weekend we happened to go from summer time to winter time. i.e. the clock passed 02:00 - 3:00 two times during this night.

I.e. there is a bug in the Data Collector component that collects data for the Management Data Warehouse: it uses local time instead of UTC. I've created a Connect item to report it to Microsoft.URL...how do you get your process running again? the job will no longer run because it will every 5 minutes keep on trying to upload the conflicting data for the 2nd 2:00 - 3:00 period. I've only found one solution: get rid of all data collected but not yet uploaded.

You do this by stopping the Collection set (in SSMS go to Object Explorer -> <the server you want to fix> -> Management -> Data Collection -> System Data Collection Sets. Right click "Query Statistics" and select "Stop Data Collection Set").Then you delete the cached results from the sql server machine's harddisk. These cached results are in files located in a Temp folder on the sql machine itself, inside the AppData folder for the service account SQL Server Agent is running under. Usually it will be something like: c:Users<sql agent service account>AppDataLocalTemp.

Inside this folder delete all files that have 'QueryActivity' in their name. You'll loose all data collected since the start of wintertime, but at least your data collection process will work again. After this you can start the Collection set again by right clicking it and select "Start Data Collection Set". Every 5 minutes the data will be summarised and uploaded into your management data warehouse.

SQL Server 2012 :: Adding Count To Query Without Duplicating Original Select Query

Aug 5, 2014

I have the following code.

SELECT _bvSerialMasterFull.SerialNumber, _bvSerialMasterFull.SNStockLink, _bvSerialMasterFull.SNDateLMove, _bvSerialMasterFull.CurrentLoc,
_bvSerialMasterFull.CurrentAccLink, _bvSerialMasterFull.StockCode, _bvSerialMasterFull.CurrentAccount, _bvSerialMasterFull.CurrentLocationDesc,
_bvSerialNumbersFull.SNTxDate, _bvSerialNumbersFull.SNTxReference, _bvSerialNumbersFull.SNTrCodeID, _bvSerialNumbersFull.SNTransType,
_bvSerialNumbersFull.SNWarehouseID, _bvSerialNumbersFull.TransAccount, _bvSerialNumbersFull.TransTypeDesc,

[code]...

However, as you can see, the original select query is run twice and joined together. What I was hoping for is this to be done in the original query without the need to duplicate the original query.

SQL Server 2012 :: Query Execution Not Showing Up In Profiler Trace

Aug 22, 2014

Set up a trace with the events RPC:Completed, SQL:BatchCompleted, SQL:BatchStarting, and SQL:StmtCompleted.

When I issue the statement: SELECT * FROM XyzView there is nothing captured in Profiler. If I script out the view and then execute the select statement that defines the view, it does show up in Profiler.

I've tried adding a lot of the other events, i.e. SP:StmtCompleted and the various other StmtStarting events and the trace still does not capture anything.

Am I capturing the wrong events or is this known behavior? My goal is to see what the overhead is for using a view versus persisting the results of the view as a table and referencing that instead. The view in question is against static data, joins 9 tables, and is referenced a lot.

I can use the stats generated when I execute the select that defines the view but I still find this to be curious behavior so I assume I'm doing something wrong.

it would be better to match a number into the like but i thinks it cannot be done in the like so i've to add another condition to ensure all the text after L is a number.

is this the best way to do it?

Select count(*) from Information_Schema.Columns Where Table_Name = @Table

SQL Server 2012 :: Adding 2 COUNT Statements Results In Heavy Query

Jan 28, 2014

These separate COUNT queries are very fast:

SELECT COUNT(id) as viewcount from location_views WHERE createdate>DATEADD(dd,-30,getdate()) AND objectid=357
SELECT COUNT(id)*2 as clickcount FROM extlinks WHERE createdate>DATEADD(dd,-30,getdate()) AND objectid=357

But I want to add the COUNT statements, so this is what I did:

select COUNT(vws.id)+COUNT(lnks.id)*2 AS totalcount
FROM location_views vws,extlinks lnks
WHERE (vws.createdate>DATEADD(dd,-30,getdate()) AND vws.objectid=357)
OR
(lnks.createdate>DATEADD(dd,-30,getdate()) AND lnks.objectid=357)

Turns out the query becomes immensely slow. There must be something I'm doing wrong here which results in such bad performance, but what is it?

Execution Time For Stored Procedure Vs. Query Analyzer

Feb 21, 2002

HI,
I have an interesting situation. I have created a stored procedure which has a select union query and it accepts some parameters. When I execute this procedure it takes 8 minutes. When I copy the script in stored procedure and run it directly in Query Analyzer it takes 2 1/2 minutes?? Same numbers of rows are returned either way in the result set with about 13,000.

I cannot figure this out and it is almost the same thing except that in Query Analyzer I declare the parameters variables and its values?

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance...

Query Analyzer -&> Subtree Cost Vs. Execution Time

Jul 14, 2004

I am using a stored procedure that is behaving badly - the subtree cost is about 2000 and it takes between 3-4 seconds to run, and sometimes it takes over a minute to run. I have made some optimizations that cause the stored procedure to run in generally under 1 second (at most under 2 seconds), but the subtree cost of it jumps to 4000!! All of this while the server was experiencing similar load (the tests were done within minutes of each other).

I know that the subtree cost is a way to gauge the performance of a query against other queries, but I have typically seen the cost go in the same direction as the execution time (they both go up or the both go down).

How does SQL Server determine the cost (I know that is based on statistics, but I was wondering if anyone had more details)? Is it more important to have a lower subtree cost, or a lower execution time? Am I going to get into trouble later with this high subtree cost?

I would appreciate any help on this matter.

SQL 2012 :: Calculate Time Difference For Consecutive Rows?

Jul 2, 2015

I have a table like this.

CREATE TABLE Table1
([S_ID] varchar(7), [S_ACTV_CODE] varchar(4), [S_USER] varchar(5), [S_DATETIME] varchar(19), [S_ACT_IND] int)
;
INSERT INTO Table1
([S_ID], [S_ACTV_CODE], [S_USER], [S_DATETIME], [S_ACT_IND])
VALUES
('AAA-111', NULL, 'USER1', '2015-06-15 00:21:06', 0),
('AAA-111', '2', 'USER1', '2015-06-15 00:21:07', 0),

[code]....

Basically I want to calculate the time spent by S_Users on a particular S_ACTV_CODE:

- S_ACTV_CODE_PREV means the previous active records.

- S_START_TIME is the time of S_DATETIME when a S_ACTV_CODE starts

- S_END_TIME is the time before a S_ACTV_CODE changes to another S_ACTV_CODE

- For the first record, S_ACTV_CODE is null, so there is no S_ACTV_CODE_PREV, so S_ACTV_CODE_PREV is NULL

- For the second record S_ACTV_CODE has some value, but S_ACTV_CODE_PREV is NULL for first record. So second record S_ACTV_CODE_PREV is also NULL

- For the last record (means S_ACTV_IND = 1), the user is currently working on it and S_ACTV_CODE is not changed. So S_END_TIME is a open time and we want to keep it as NULL

So the result should be as below:

S_ID S_ACTV_CODE_PREV S_ACTV_CODE_CURR S_USER S_START_TIME
S_END_TIME TIME_SPENT (in Sec)
AAA-111 NULL NULL USER1 2015-06-15 00:21:06
2015-06-15 00:21:07 1
AAA-111 NULL 2 USER1 2015-06-15 00:21:07
2015-06-17 03:20:33 183566
AAA-111 2 4 USER2 2015-06-17 03:20:33
