SQL Server 2012 :: Structure For Multiple Nested Queries

Feb 27, 2014

I am using Server 2012 and very new to SQL. I have a request from a physician for a list of his patients that meet a criteria. This is stored in a temp table names #cohort.

Using this cohort he wants each row to be one patient with a list of labs, vitals, etc. Three items are the most recent lab value and date. I could query each lab individually and place it into a temp table and then join all temp tables at the end, but I am trying to move past that and have all labs in one temp table. All temp tables are joined with PatientSID.

I tried to do something for just 2 labs, but it is not working. There could be nulls values when joined with the #cohort table.

Individually the SELECT statements pull in the most recent lab value and date, but I cannot get them into a temp table with one row of PatientSID and then the lab value and date if they exist.

IF OBJECT_ID ('TEMPDB..#lab') IS NOT NULL DROP TABLE #lab
SELECT
cohort.PatientSID
,SubQuery1.LabChemResultNumericValueAS 'A1c%'
,SubQuery1.LabChemCompleteDateTimeAS 'A1c% Date'
,SubQuery2.LabChemResultNumericValueAS 'LDL'

SQL Server 2012 :: Multiple Queries In Same Stored Procedure

Sep 16, 2015

Our developers have gotten this idea lately that instead of having many small stored procedures that do one thing and have small parameter lists that SQL can optimize query plans for, its better to put like 8-10 different queries in the same stored procedure.

They tend to look like this:

create procedure UberProc (@QueryId varchar(50))
as

if @QueryId = 'First Horrible Idea'
begin
select stuff from something
end
if @queryid = 'Second really bad idea'
begin
select otherstuff from somethingelse
end

I see the following problems with this practice:

1) SQL can't cache the query plan appropriately
2) They are harder to debug
3) They use these same sorts of things for not just gets, but also updates, with lots of optional NULLable parameters that are not properly handled to avoid parameter sniffing.

SQL 2012 :: Execute Multiple Queries And Email

Jul 14, 2014

I have to create a SQL job which will run around 50 queries and email results when the query gets some results. These are like quality checks which run to check errors in the system so if any query(out of 50 queries) returns some results an email with the details will be sent .So if 5 queries return results 5 emails with the details will be sent .

I think of something like A table which has one column as the query .What will be the best way of handling such a scenario , may be need an SSIS package with steps ?

SQL Server 2012 :: Nested FOR XML Path

I'm trying to reverse engineer an XML output based on a client's need of a very specific format. Besides the issue of getting the XML declaration written in and removing NULLs, I'm having an issue with a three times nested PATH query.

So far the document almost has the correct format, except for the first nested root being returned. Is there any way to prevent this?

Nested Queries

Mar 15, 2005

I have this table record:

PHP Code:

 ID |    NUMBER    |   DSTART   |    DEND    |     ADDRESS     |
----------------------------------------------------------------
 1  | 9524123      | 12 Dec 95  | 24 Dec 95  | London          |

 4  | 084521       | 22 Aug 96  | 25 Aug 96  | Sidney          |
 ---------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I need to build a query to show only the latest DTSTART date
for each NUMBER. The result would be something like this:

PHP Code:

 ID |    NUMBER    |   DSTART   |    DEND    |     ADDRESS     |
----------------------------------------------------------------
 2  | 9524123      | 06 Jan 96  | 15 Jan 96  | Paris           |
 4  | 084521       | 22 Aug 96  | 25 Aug 96  | Sidney          |

Can you guys help me to build the queries? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I apologize if this is not the section where this should be posted.

Below is a link to a post I made in the Visual Basic forum. Now that I think about it, it may be more of a SQL question than a VB one.

I'm trying to run a query on the result of a query. Thank in advance for any help.

Passing Parameters To Nested Parameter Queries

Jul 20, 2005

Though I am a novice to MS SQL server (2000 I believe), I can do almost!everything I need. Maybe not efficiently, but usefully. However, I havea problem -- a complex query problem...I can create a parameter query in a stored procedure, but how do I usethe result set of a parameter query in a select query (in the same oranother sp)? In short, if a select query contains a result table that isgenerated as a parameter query, how do I pass the parameter through theselect query to the nested parameter query? For example, if I have a sp parameter query called [e_typerows], I couldwrite the following select query which uses the (single) result set from[e_typerows] plus other tables or views:SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT bi_occ_01_e.row, bi_occ_01_e.pos,bi_dictionary_e.typestring, bi_occ_01_e.shadowFROM bi_dictionary_e INNER JOIN(bi_occ_01_e INNER JOIN[e_typerows] ON bi_occ_01_e.row = [e_typerows].row) ONbi_dictionary_e.typeid = bi_occ_01_e.typeidORDER BY bi_occ_01_e.row, bi_occ_01_e.posEven though [e_typerows] is a (storted procedure) parameter query thiswill work IF my parameter in [e_typerows] has a default, say "yyyy". Inthe default case no parameter needs passing. But what if it doesn't havea default value or if I need to pass a parameter to it?Is there any way to replace[e_typerows]in the above query with somethinglike [e_typerows @myparameter='xxxx']? (Maybe I should try that! I'veseen nothing about it though.)My parameter query, [e_typerows], looks like this in fact:@typestringparameter varchar(100) = "yyyy"SELECT dbo.bi_dictionary_e.typestring, dbo.bi_occ_01_e.rowFROM dbo.bi_occ_01_e INNER JOINdbo.bi_dictionary_e ONdbo.bi_occ_01_e.typeid = dbo.bi_dictionary_e.typeidGROUP BY dbo.bi_dictionary_e.typestring,dbo.bi_occ_01_e.rowHAVING (dbo.bi_dictionary_e.typestring = @typestringparameter)Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! (For the moment, I firstgenerate the parameter query result set, then I loop through each row ofthat result set and do a select query with that row as a parameter --very complicated!, though it does work.)

Merging Data From Multiple Databases With Multiple Tables (all With The Same Structure)

Nov 15, 2006

Hi!

I have 7 source databases and one target database, all using the same structure. The structure is made of 10 tables, with foreign key constraints.

I need to merge the source databases into the target (which won't have any data before that process, but will already have the correct schema), and to keep the relationships between the records.

I know how to iterate over the source databases (with SMO foreach), but I'd like to know if someone can advise the best copy method for that context in SSIS ? (I don't want to keep the primary keys, but I need to keep the relationships...)

Any pointer most welcome!

best regards and thanks

Nested Queries, Stored Procedures, Temporary Table

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I'm adapting access queries to sql server and I have difficulties withthe following pattern :query1 : SELECT * FROM Query2 WHERE A=@param1query 2: SELECT * FROM Table2 WHERE B=@param2The queries are nested, and they both use parameters. In MS Acccess the management of nested queries with parameters is soeasy (implicit declaration of parameters, transmission of parametersfrom main query to nested query)that I don't know what the syntax should be for stored procedures. The corresponding stored procedure would be something likeCREATE TABLE #TempTable (...table definition...)INSERT INTO #TempTable ExecProc spQuery2 @Param2SELECT * FROM #TempTable WHERE A=@Param1And spQuery2 would be : SELECT * FROM Table2 WHERE B=@ParamI was wondering if this syntax would work and if I can skip theexplicit declaration of #TempTable definition. Thanks for your suggestions.

Queries From Multiple Databases On The Same Server

Feb 13, 2008

I have a situation where I need to do some reporting for simular asset records but the data is listed on different database from the same server.
I was curious as to the way to write the queries that I will need.

Lets say I have 3 databases and I am looking for a asset of some type and the ID is a serial number.
The serial will be on the main table from each database. Is there a way I can set a relation from a view between these records?

I.E.:
1: Database A -DSNA_tblMaiin - Serialnumber
2: Database B -DSNB_tblMaiin - Serialnumber
3: Database C -DSNC_tblMaiin - Serialnumber

I believe that this is a dot notation question.

Thanks in advance,

@id should inherit Session id
 One example query is SELECT hours FROM table WHERE MONTH ='" + Session("intLastmonth") + "'  AND YEAR ='" + Session("intCurrYear") + "' AND [NUMBER] = '" + Session("id")
The rest of the queries will be similar and use all 3 variables as well.

SQL Server 2012 :: Find Queries That Lock Tables Or Not Using Primary Key While Running Update

Jul 20, 2015

I need to search for such SPs in my database in which the queries for update a table contains where clause which uses non primary key while updating rows in table.

If employee table have empId as primary key and an Update query is using empName in where clause to update employee record then such SP should be listed. so there would be hundreds of tables with their primary key and thousands of SPs in a database. How can I find them where the "where" clause is using some other column than its primary key.

If there is any other hint or query to identify such queries that lock tables, I only found the above few queries that are not using primary key in where clause.

Multiple Nested (TOP 1 SELECT) S

Is there a better way to do this. I was thinking of something very similar to the below query (Which doesnt work):

SELECT *

INNER JOIN ( SELECT TOP 1 * FROM Table2 WHERE Field3='X' ORDER BY Date1 ) C ON (A.ID=C.ID)
WHERE
B.Field1 = C.Field1
B.Field2 = C.Field1

Any ideas?

Can We Define Multiple Key Columns For A Mining Structure?

Jul 10, 2007

Hi, all,

Just found that we are not able to define multiple key columns for a mining structure in SQL Server 2005 Data Mining engine, just wondering is there other way to define multiple key columns for a mining structure there? As in many cases, the table we are mining are with composite key consisting of different foriengn keys, e.g. A fact table are with transaction information and other foreign keys. If I am not able to define these composite key here for this fact table, I will have to have a named calculation in data source view to have a key column which is based on these original composite keys? Is this a better way to solve this problem or there is any other alternatives to figure it out?

Hope my question is clear for your help and I am looking forward to heaing from you shortly for your kind advices and help and thanks a lot in advance.

With best regards,

Multiple Counts In One Nested Query: How?

May 12, 2008

I'd appreciate some help with the issue below - my SQL is a bit rusty and was never that hot to be frank. I'm using SQL Server 2000 (although have a test box with 2005 Express also). I've trawled MSDN and a few forums but can't find the solution (maybe I don't know what I'mm looking for!), so any help would be marvellous...

I have a table with a field called 'IRV' containing a string of comma-separated values. I want to be able to query a point in that string and count the number of times a given value appears. So...as an example, I want to count how many times '1' appears at position 7 in the IRV. I can create SQL to do this as follows:

SELECT COUNT(X) AS is1
FROM myIRVtable
WHERE (SUBSTRING(IRV, 7, 1) = '1')

So far so good. However, it is also possible that the value at position 7 in this string could be '2' (or '3', or '4', etc) - and rather than re-running the query again and again to get these values, I'd like to do it in one hit.

How can I combine all this together - anyone have any brilliant solutions?

Nested REPLACE Statements Using Multiple Columns

Jun 20, 2007

I need to pass 3 column values and one Formula string into 4 replace statements and output the result in one column.

Nesting them in the usual way doesn't seem to work as that only allows for one column.

My table consits of four columns...PF (numeric), Hours (numeric), TotalNumber INT, and Formula (nvatchar)

My function needs to search and replace the Formula column for instances of all the three number columns and output the formula as a mathmatical formula rather than a string.

Here is what I have so far which works fine if all three columns have a value, but if only one is null then it will retrun NULL and not the other two values.

FUNCTION GetFormula
(@numPF NUMERIC(10,2), @numHours NUMERIC(10,2), @intTotalNumber INT, @strFormula nvarChar(200)) RETURNS nvarchar(200)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @strExpression nvarchar(200)

SELECT @strExpression=REPLACE(@strFormula, 'TotalNumber',@intTotalNumber)
SELECT @strExpression=REPLACE(@strExpression, 'PF',@numPF )
SELECT @strExpression=REPLACE(@strExpression, 'Hours',@numHours )
RETURN @strExpression
END

id    parent_id    name-----------------------------------1     0                 Level 1 Parent A2     0                 Level 1 Parent B3     1,2              Level 2 Child
Example 2
id    parent_id    name-----------------------------------1     0                 Level 1 Parent A2     0                 Level 1 Parent B3     1                 Level 2 Child3     2                 Level 2 Child
Is any of the two examples valid database logic wise? In fact, is it possible to achieve the requirement by using only one table?
Thanks in advance,
