SQL Server 2012 :: UPDATE Trigger Failing
Jan 30, 2015
We have an UPDATE trigger that is failing. This seems like a basic task - we want to write a record to a separate tracking table when our main transaction table is updated for any reason. Our assumption is that we have a reference to the data from the "inserted" record that was just updated. The scenario here is that we are running a batch process which READS several thousand records in our transaction table each evening.
We then mark each individual record as processed on the transaction table and expect that the UPDATE trigger will successfully fire (it is not). The version of our trigger listed below shows our attempt to deal with the fact that TransactionID does NOT exist from "inserted." We also have a version of this trigger that deals with INSERTS - it works flawlessly.
ON [dbo].[FPS_Transaction]
AFTER UPDATE
AS declare @trxId uniqueidentifier;
BEGIN TRY
SET NOCOUNT ON
[code]...

We have a database on a 2005 box, which we need to keep in sync with one on a 2014 box (until we can turn off the one on 2005). The 2005 database is still being updated with changes that must be applied to the 2014 database, given the nature of the data (medical documents) we need to ensure updates are applied to the 2014 database in very near real time (these changes are - for example - statuses, not the documents themselves).
Cunning plan #1, ulgy - not at all a fan of triggers - but use an after update trigger to run a sp on the remote box via a linked server in this format, with a SQL Server login for the linked server with permissions to EXEC the remote proc.
CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[SourceUpdate] ON [dbo].[SourceTable]
AFTER UPDATE
AS
SET XACT_ABORT ON;
SET NOCOUNT ON;
IF UPDATE(ColumnName)
[Code] ....
However, while the sp can be run against the linked server as a standalone query OK, when running it in a trigger it's throwing
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "WIBBLE" returned message "The transaction manager has disabled its support for remote/network transactions.".
Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Procedure TheAfterUpdateTrigger, Line 19
The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "WIBBLE" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
Whether it actually possible to call a proc on a remote box via a trigger and if so what additional hoops need to be jumped through (like I said, it'll run OK called via SSMS)?

I am writing a trigger for getting values to auditlog table when the values gets updated. Below is the code of my trigger.
CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[Update_Temp] ON [dbo].[Temptable1] FOR UPDATE
AS
DECLARE @bit INT ,
@field INT ,
@maxfield INT ,
@char INT ,
@fieldname VARCHAR(128) ,
@TableName VARCHAR(128) ,
[Code] ....
The code is working fine when the table has primary key associated. However due to some restrictions I will not be able to have a primary key for some tables. I want to implement the same trigger in those tables too. When there is primary key, that primary key needs to get inserted into the audit table and if there is no primary key, i want a specific column value to get inserted instead of the primary key value into the audit table.
For example, i have a student table in which there is a student id, name, dob. there is no primary key defined for the table. So when i update the name or dob, i need the student id to get inserted into the Pk column of the audit table.
I tried modifying the code by checking the @pkcols for Null and if its null to get the old value as the primary key however I was not able to do it .

I would like to change a value after the table updates inserts a new row based on the value of that column
Table Name is: MPanel
Col Names: RID, FPID.
I want to:
If column RID='16'
Then UPDATE FPID='1'
How can I trigger that update? Would this work:???
CREATE TRIGGER dbo.MyTrigLI
ON dbo.MPanel
FOR INSERT, UPDATE
AS
BEGIN
UPDATE [MPanel]
SET
FPID='1'
WHERE (UPDATE(RID='16')
END

I have created mergse statement using SCD2.where I am inserting the data if my BBxkey is not matching with target and updating the rows if the bbxkey is matching and rowchecksum is different.
Working of Store procedure
There are 2 scenario covered in this procedure on the basis of that ETL happening.
There are 2 columns deriving from source table at run time, one is BBxkey which is nothing but a combination of one or more column or part of column and another column is a Rowchecksum column which is nothing but a Hashvalue of all the column of the tables for a row.
Merge case 1:-WHEN NOT MATCH THEN INSERT
If source BBxkey is not there in Archive table that means if BBxKey is null then those records are new and it will directly inserted into Archive table.
Merge case 2:-WHEN MATCH THEN UPDATE
If Source.BBxkey=Target.BBxkey && Source.Rowchecksum<>Target.Rowchecksum then this means source records are available in Archive table but data has been changed, in this case it will update the old record with latestversion 0 and insert the new record with latestversion 1.
my sp failing when source having more than 1 same bbxkey.
error [Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "EXEC dbo.ETL_STAGE_ARCHIVE ?" failed with the following error: "The MERGE statement attempted to UPDATE or DELETE the same row more than once. This happens when a target row matches more than one source row. A MERGE statement cannot UPDATE/DELETE the same row of the target table multiple times. Refine the ON clause to ensure a target row matches at most one source row, or use the GROUP BY clause to group the source rows.".
Sample store procedure
DECLARE @Merge_Out TABLE (Action_Taken varchar(8),
TimeIn datetime,
BBXKey varchar(100),
RowChecksum nvarchar(4000),Col001 varchar(8000),Col002 varchar(8000),
Col003 varchar(8000),Col004 varchar(8000),Col005 varchar(8000),
[code].....
How Can I avoid such failure of my sp.
I want to handle those case where S.bbxkey=T.bbxkey && s.rowchecksum=t.rowchecksum

It fails with an error message:
"Server: Msg 21, Level 22, State 1, Procedure

note the
error and time, and contact your System Administrator."
It's failing on a field with remarks greater than 1885 chars.
When I used a stored procedure to do the same, it worked. Why is the trigger failing now? Is there a limit on size for triggers and not procedures?
THANKS!!!!!!

Hello,I have created the following trigger:CREATE TRIGGER tr_UDFTest ON UserDefinedFields FOR INSERT, UPDATEASDECLARE @foobar varchar(100)SELECT @foobar= foobar FROM insertedIF ( @foobar = 'foobar') INSERT INTO LogTable (LogText) values ('Found foobar')ELSE INSERT INTO LogTable (LogText) values ('Did not find foobar')GOBasically, the trigger monitors the values begin put in the foobar field,and acts accordingly based on what it finds. In practice, my needs are abit more complex (the trigger will be programmatically generated, based ona set of rules) but the principle is much the same.ErrorTable is defined as :create table LogTable (LogText varchar(128))UserDefinedFields is a table whose definition may change depending on theuser's needs, but for now assume it contains a varchar column calledfoobar.My problem is that if the user's needs change, and they remove the fieldfoobar, the trigger causes all subsequent inserts/updates to fail with anerror indicating the column foobar doesn't exist. (Which makes sense ofcourse!)CREATE TRIGGER tr_UDFTest ON UserDefinedFields FOR INSERT, UPDATEASDECLARE @foobar varchar(100)if not exists (select * from syscolumns sc inner join sysobjects so on sc.id = so.idwhere sc.name = 'foobar'and so.name = 'UserDefinedFields') BEGININSERT INTO LogTable (LogText) values ('Error : Foobar column does not exist!')RETURNENDSELECT @foobar= foobar FROM insertedIF ( @foobar = 'foobar') INSERT INTO LogTable (LogText) values ('Found foobar')ELSE INSERT INTO LogTable (LogText) values ('Did not find foobar')GOI'd be happy with the above 'flavor' of solution (bailing, or logging anerror and bailing, when we hit unexpected problems) as long as theinserts/updates don't fail otherwise. Perhaps I can nest a transaction, orsupress a RAISEERROR or something?The cleanest solution would probably be to change a bunch of clientsoftware such that it won't remove the foobar field if this field isneeded for a trigger (foreign key constraints based on the set of rulesI'm using are a nice and intuitive solution). Unfortunately, that doesn'twork well with my timeframe (done by thursday) as changing the clientsoftware is impossible by then. Any ideas or suggestions? Platform isWin2k, SQL 2000 Enterprise (I think enterprise, certainly 2000).thanks,Dave

I have stored procedure on Server A which goes to ServerB to check and update table and then update on Server A as well.I have Trigger which suppose to execute stored procedure (as i mentioned above). But it failed with this error:--
Trigger code:--
CREATE TRIGGER [tr_DBA_create_database_notification] ON ALL SERVER
AFTER CREATE_DATABASE
AS
--execute dbadmin.dbo.usp_DBA_Refresh_DBAdmin_Tables
Error:--The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "xxx" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.Process ID 62 attempted to unlock a resource it does not own: DATABASE 21. Retry the transaction, because this error may be caused by a timing condition. If the problem persists, contact the database administrator.
Same stored procedure, if i execute manually or if i create sql job and execute this stored procedure, it works just fine..In trigger also, if i execute start job which has stored procedure, it works.My question is,why it failed when i execute stored procedure in TRIGGER.

Hi all,
I have a trigger for column eISBNEnteredDate on update or insert changes of eISBN of the table Products2 ( both belong to the same table). The column eISBNEnteredDate can either be added manually along with eISBN value or when only eISBN value is entered it is updated with present date.
The problem I am facing is when I send eISBN along with eISBNEnteredDate the present date is what is getting saved. Upon the same record when a new date is updated the new date is getting saved. Can someone tell me where I am going wrong?
Here is my trigger:
Code Block
ALTER TRIGGER [dbo].[Products2_eISBNEnteredDate] ON [dbo].[Products2]
For Insert, Update
As
Begin
Declare @ProductId int
Declare @eISBN Varchar(17)
Set @eISBN = '0'
If ( Update(eISBN) )
Begin
Select @Productid = I.Productid,@eISBN = I.eISBN
From Inserted I Left Join Deleted d on I.Productid = D.Productid
Left join Products2 P on P.Productid = I.Productid
Where (ISNULL(I.eISBN,'') <> ISNULL(D.eISBN,''))
If (IsNull(@eISBN,'') <> '' and IsNull(@eISBN,'') <> '0')
Begin
Update Products2
Set eISBNEnteredDate = getdate()
Where ProductID in (select i.ProductID
From Inserted i
Left join Deleted d on d.ProductID = i.ProductID
Where (i.eISBN is not null or replace(i.eISBN,' ','') != '') --where the new eISBN is not null or blank
and (d.eISBN is null or replace(d.eISBN,' ','') = '') --where the old eISBN is null or blank
and isnull(i.eISBN,'') != isnull(d.eISBN,'') --where the new eISBN is not equal to the old ISBN13
and d.eISBNEnteredDate is null)
End

I am STIGing a database and have to create a trigger that will stop any connection from occurring after a certain limit has been reached. For example I set the concurrent connection to 50 so I need a trigger that will stop any connection from all logins happening after 50.
The STIG info:
Rule Title: SQL Server must limit the number of concurrent sessions for each system account to an organization-defined number of sessions.
STIG ID: SQL2-00-000100
The below triggers works, but for only the one login, so how can I have it include all logins for that SQL instance.
CREATE TRIGGER connection_limit_trigger

Restoring a new backup of the database cures the problem for anywhere between 15minutes and 12 hours, but it always seems to re-occur.I have run DBCC on the source databases with no errors reported, and five other databases have the log shipping working without errors.

When I make a call to a stored procedure to update a record, the update does not happen. No error is thrown, there are just no rows updated. When I look at SQL Server Profiler, this is what I see:

Starting saturday all of our SSIS packages on a server (64-bit) starting failing (hundreds of them) the error is:
Precompiled script failed to load. Attempting to reload the script with updated data. For more information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, KB931846 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=81885).
That Knowledgebase link talks about SP2 fixing the issue but we have SP2 already on the server. The sysdtslog90 table is just packed with these as each script inside each package is getting the same error. Looking at the system log the following were installed as part of windows update shortly before the errors started occuring:

Is there any SQL as an example of the best way to accomplish this? I am using sql server 2012 with HADR (Always on with sql cluster).
We have database maintenance plans through wizard for full backup & DBCC CHECK DB. It was running successfully but it failed with the below error
Execute SQL Task Description: Failed to acquire connection "Local server connection". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection.
(A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)).

I can able to take the backup from query window. It is succesful. The Sql Agent has full permissions. I don't think there are any recent changes happen.

I'm trying to update rows in a simple table that has a UNIQUE KEY CONSTRAINT defined on one of its columns. Here is the DDL for the table:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[SEC_USER](
[SEC_USER_ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[USER_CODE] [varchar](100) NOT NULL,
[USER_NAME] [varchar](128) NOT NULL,
[EMP_CODE] [varchar](6) NOT NULL,
[Code] ....
When trying to execute the UPDATE statement the query fails with a constraint violation error:
Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'UQ__SEC_USER__A039F1EE62FE8444'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.SEC_USER'. The duplicate key value is (34337).
What has me baffled is that I'm not doing any insert. Also, the value that it's referencing - 34337 - doesn't exist in the table at all. I'd rather not drop the constraint.
