SQL Server 2012 :: Using Substring For A Destination Field?

I have a Function where I want to put a character in a particular position in a Destination string. For example, I have a 5 character field containing, say, "12345". I would like to put the letter "A" in the third position resulting in "12A45". I'm trying the following
DECLARE @RetVal as varchar(5)
SET SUBSTRING(@RetVal,3,1) = 'A'
I'm getting a compiler error
"incorrect syntax near '@RetVal'. Expecting '(' or SELECT"
Am I using the wrong Function to do this? If so, what should I be using?

Padding leading zeroes for the months in End date
Example: actual data is like
6222007
,11301998
in end date column the following query works fine for 11301998 and converts it as 19981130 which was correct.
But 6222007
fails because month has no leading zero and it converts it as 0076222 which is wrong.
How can i make it as 20070622 with the following code
select (case when replace (ltrim(rtrim(ltrim([end date]))), '|', '') in ('99999999','00000000') then NULL
else substring ([END DATE],5,4)+SUBSTRING([END DATE],1,2)+SUBSTRING([END DATE],3,2) end) as ConvEnd_date

I am trying to populate a field in a SQL table based on the valuesreturned from using substring on a text field.Example:Field Name = RecNumField Value = 024071023The 7th and 8th character of this number is the year. I am able toget those digits by saying substring(recnum,7,2) and I get '02'. Nowwhat I need to do is determine if this is >= 50 then concatenate a'19' to the front of it or if it is less that '50' concatenate a '20'.This particular example should return '2002'. Then I want to take theresult of this and populate a field called TaxYear.Any help would be greatly apprecaietd.Mark

Hi!
Can anyone tell me how to perform a substring operation on a DateTime field. I'm using SQLServer. I have read that you may have to use casts but I have thus far been unable to get that to work.
My statement:
SELECT EventDate FROM tblEvent WHERE Category = 'GE';
I just want to cut the hours, minutes and seconds off, so that I am left with just the date element.

Hi,
According to the docs, when using substring on a text field (not varchar):
substring (<text>, start, length)
...the length in this case, represents BYTEs as opposed to number of characters. So my question is, how many bytes per character (or characters per byte)....or is this a possible conversion?

I am trying to populate two fields in my table with the first 6 characters in an existing field with the following command:
SELECT dimension_elist,
SUBSTRING(dimension_elist FROM 1 FOR 6)
AS BU_Number
SUBSTRING(dimension_jde_pl FROM 1 FOR 6)
AS Acct_Number
FROM JDE_Import
The result is an error:
Server: Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'FROM'.
I am fairly new to SQL so I am probably missing something basic.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Hi :) and thanx for reading my post.I have to create a view based on a character in a number-field (fnr)which is 11 char's long. I have to get character nr "7".The problem is that i cannot use :--> SELECT fnr FROM table WHERE substring(fnr,7,1)since it's not a string.Any other way i can solve this ? Hi,
I am using the Execute SQL Task in SSIS. I tried to create a table CREATE TABLE newtable(ID INT, NAME nvarchar(50)) in my ACCESS database.
However, it prompts me an error, saying that there is an syntax error and I need to change the INT. I do not know what is the correct data type.
Can anyone give advice? thks alot.

Hi,
I try to use Data Transaction Service (SQL Server 7) to copy information from an Sql Server Table to an text file (fixed field). When I run the process, no problem, the text file is created and a Ok message appears. But when I look in my text file, every time a field was NULL or empty in the source table, the following fields are not aligned !
Somebody knows what the problem ?

I have a query that displays a bunch of fields, specifically a createdon field and closedate field.I need to find the diff in days between date1 and date2 and only disiplay those results.For example: where the NumDays = a certain value. So for years I was using the int identity(1,1) primary_key for all the tables I created, and then in this project I decided, you know, I like the uniqueidentifier using newsequentialid() to ensure a distinctly unique primary key.
then, after working with the php sqlsrv driver, I realized huh, no matter what, i am unable to retrieve the scope_identity() of the insert
So of course I cruised back to the MSSMS and realized crap, I can't even make the uniqueidentifier an identity.
So now I'm wondering 2 things...
1: Can I short cut and pull the uniqueidentifier of a newly inserted record, even though the scope_identity() will return null or
2: do I now have to add a column to each table, keep the uniqueidentifier (as all my tables are unified by that relationship) and also add a pk field as an int identity(1,1) primary_key, in order to be able to pull the scope_identity() on insert...

I am trying to update records based on the results of a query with a subquery.
The result set being produced shows the record of an item number. This result produces the correct ItemNo which I need to update. The field I am looking to update is an integer named Block.
When I run the update statement all records are updated and not the result set when I run the query by itself.
Below you will find the code I am running:
create table #Items

ItemNovarchar (50),
SearchNo varchar (50),
Historical int,
Blocked int
[Code] ....
Below is the code I am using in an attempt to update the block column but it updates all records and not the ones which I need to have the Blocked field set to 1.

Why is the update changing each record? How can I change the update to choose the correct records?

I have some data where a bit value changes over time and I want to rank it by the repeating groups, how do I write the SQL so that I get the result below?
I want to sort by create date, and every time the bit changes value we start the rank over.
If I partition by the bit field, it will just group the entire data set by the bit field.

I am needing to combine the Notes field where Number and date are the same...For example
for Number 0000000003 I need notes to Read ('CHK # 2452 FOR $122.49 REJECTED AS NSF ON 2/25/15') the note counter is different for each row, and is combination of special char, 0-Z and looks like the (!) depicts the start of a new Number.

I would like to replace the value in the Select query of CO OWNER with a space ' ' or NULL if the ORDINAL value = 0.
The CO OWNER name is stored in the CARDNAME table, and the OWNER name is stored in the NAME table. I can not change the db structure.
JEAN is the ACCOUNT owner and BILL is CO OWNER of two cards.

I have a table (ScriptTable) which holds a groupID Nvarchar(10) ,SQLStatement Nvarchar (150)
Table Fields =
GroupID SQLStatement
1234 Select CUSTNO, CUSTNAME,CUSTADDRESS from custtable where customerNo = 'AB123'
9876 Select CUSTNO, CUSTNAME,CUSTADDRESS from custtable where customerNo = 'XY*'
What I need is to take each select statement in turn and add the data into a temp table. I can use any method but it needs to be the most efficient. There can also be a varying number of select statements to run through each time my job is run.

I have been tasksed to create a data table and stored procedure to extract a special formatted XML file that is an attachment with a standard XML envelope. The XML file is an attchment in a node within the XML wrapper. There are other MIME files (pdf's ) that are handle by a seperate procedure. But I need to just extract the XML file attached along with those and put it into the datable with some other PK?FK fields.
Is a blob the best datatype. How to I insert that XML file into it?

I need to auto increment an alphanumeric field in a table.
The process is as follows:
1. First position is static letter C for contact or static letter A for account - field contact_id
2. The following 6 positions are numeric - example of the string would be C004658
3. When new contact is entered, it should look up the highest numeric value (in this case 004658) and increment it by one - resulting in C004659

I am trying to replace names found in 'xml' field name as hyperlinks, by matching with the names in database_tags.I am using the following function below, however the UDF is only recognizing one name from the XML fieldname data, instead of all the names present in the XML data.

I have a requirement where i have to insert empty string in column whose datatype is decimal.
I have to replace the column value if it is null then insert it as ' '.
Obviously its generate error msg for conversion, is there any workaround for this. I cannot add 0 or other value as this column is used to generate some output value.
IIF(Column1 IS NULL, ' ', Column1))
I used TRY_PARSE but it insert null value if there is conversion error.

I've inherited a table of members that has the following structure:

Based on the way the data loads into the table there's a possibility of some records being near duplicates of each other. For example, we can have a member that has records that have the same first name, last name, SSN, but different addresses, membercodes, subscribercode etc... This can happen in pretty much any variation thereof.
What I want to do, is add a new column and use that to group the similar records under based on comparing on several columns. By this I mean, if a member matches 4 of the 7 values below with another member, we would group these:
First Name (1st 3 characters)
Last Name
DOB
CurrentAddress1
MemberCode
SSN
SubscriberCode
I'm at a loss of how to structure the SQL to update the new column in the table.

I am doing some analysis on our customer base and their payment profiles. I have generated two profile strings, one for whether the balance of an account has gone up or down and one for the size of the balance in relation to the normal invoice amount for the customer. So (for example) the balance movement string will look like this:

I want to analyse these strings in two ways. The first is that I want to find customers with a similar pattern: in the example below the first and last patterns are the same, just one out of sync but should be considered the same

good way to approach this without either a cursor or a hidden REBAR. The challenge as I see it is that I have to interrogate every string to find out if there is a repeating pattern and if so where it starts and how long it is (heuristic because some strings will start with a repeating pattern and then the pattern may change or deteriorate) and then compare the string for N groups of repeating characters to see if and when it changes and I can't think of an efficient method to do this in SQL because it is not a set based operation.

I have a table of "applicants" with unique applicant id and another table "reviews" with reviews which has unique id and Emplid and contains general program name like Math and then may contain 3 addition rows for specific program like Calculus, algebra, geometry etc.
There may or may not be a record for each applicant id in table reviews or there can be 1 or more than one record in reviews based on level of review( General or Specific).
All the general reviews has “Math” as Program_code but if there are more reviews, they can have Program_code like “Cal” , “Abr”, “Geo”
I want to join the tables so I can get all the records from both the tables where Program_code in reviews table is “Math” only.
That is I want to join the table and get all the records from reviews table where the program_code is “Math” only
How can I do that?

Am converting varchar field to float and summing using group by and next inserting to varchar field(table).
while inserting float value it is converting to exponential ex:1.04177e+006 but if i execute only select statment actual float value will get display ex:1041765.726
My question is why it is converting while inserting ? and how to avoid it.
select query : SUM(CONVERT(float,(rtrim(REPLACE(REPLACE( column1, CHAR(13), ' '), CHAR(10), ' '))))) as AggregateValue

I am querying with a SELECT statement against an address table that has a post code column with corrupt data.
Sample record:- Northants NN4 0NB
Should be NN4 0NB
I have used the following on another column:-

I used bulk insert to insert a txt file into a table. It works fine. (see code below) Now, one txt file with column's name at first row and has about 200 columns. There is no table created before. How to code to create a destination table based on first row of the txt file so that bulk insert will work for that txt file?

Consider the following data:

if I wanted to run a query to select any records that had red in the color field, how would I do that? Not the one with only red, but a query that would give me both record number 2 and record number 4.
