SQL 2012 :: Replacing Column Names With Values

Nov 4, 2015

I have a field in a table that contains a different formula (varchar(1000)) for each record. It's along the lines of something like this, although each formula is different: ([ColumnA] - [ColumnB])/([ColumnC] - [ColumnD]). I plug that into a dynamic SQL statement so that it can get executed in a select statement.

Due to the variations of the formulas, checking for Divide by Zero, etc, we want to move this to a .NET method. We'd like to replace "ColumnA" and "ColumnB", etc., with the actual values so that we're passing something like (5-3)/(6-2). I haven't been able to figure out a way to do this without actually executing it. We don't want to pass the solution, but the equation filled with the actual values rather than the column names.

Row Values As Column Names In Sql Server 2005-any Ideas?

Jul 31, 2007

The table tA contains (here I m using storedprocedure to return the values as columns varchar(8000))

ID LocationName

1 Door

2 FrontCounter

The number of records may vary like sometimes it have 2 or 3 or 4 or more records

So I have to return row values as column name.

tAChild
POSID storeID tAID Auth

1 140 1 true

1 140 2 false

Result Should be like ( to create this I m using SP with Dynamic sql query to create temp table)

POSID storeID Door Window

1 140 true true

if more records in tA it should append in the end of result as new column...

Is this the above is right way to implement ?any other ideas about this...
Please suggest me......

Distinct Count With Null Values (grand Total)

May 9, 2007

Hello,

I have a DB of professors and information related with them. I created the cube, it consist of:
Measures:
Measure group Professors:
Amount of projects (COUNT proj_id)
Amount of pulications (COUNT pub_id)
Amount of e_books (COUNT book_id)
--------------
Measure group Projects:
Distinct amount of projects (DISTINCT COUNT proj_id)
--------------
Measure group Publications:
Distinct amount of publications (DISTINCT COUNT pub_id)
--------------
Measure group E_books:
Distinct amount of e_books (DISTINCT COUNT book_id)
--------------
Calculated measures:
Amnt_Projects
iif ([Measures].[ Amount of projects ] = 0 OR [Measures].[ Amount of projects] = NULL,0,[Measures].[ Distinct amount of projects])
Amnt_Publications
(similar to the above one)
Amnt_E_books
(similar to the above one)
---------------------------
Dimensions:
dimPROFESSORS
- prof_id
-surname
-name
-gender
dimPROJECTS
- proj_id
-type name
-name
dimPUBLICATIONS

dimE_BOOKS
- book_id
-name
Date_Projects
-date_id
-years
Date_Publications
-date_id
-years
Date_E_books

For example, when I browse the cube:
prof_id____Amount of projects___Distinct amount of projects___Amnt_Projects
1032------------------- 30 --------------------------1----------------1
1070-------------------90 --------------------------2----------------2
1111-------------------0 ---------------------------1----------------0
1137-------------------0 ---------------------------1----------------0
1234-------------------1404--------------------------9----------------9
1721-------------------504--------------------------7----------------7
2661-------------------85 --------------------------5----------------5
...--------------------...---------------------------...----------------...
6999------------------- 20---------------------------1-----------------1
9956-------------------50---------------------------5-----------------5
Unknown----------------(empty)---------------------(empty)-----------0
Grand Total------------ 2421------------------------11-----------------11

Grand Total “11“ is the amount of distinct projects +1 (because of the unknown member). So the last column shows the right amount of projects for the professor but I want Grand Total to sum those values and show, how many projects do the professors have (it should be „59“ if for all professors). How could I get the right value to be shown in Grand Total?

Integration Services :: SSIS Package - Replacing Null Values In One Column With Values From Another Column

Sep 3, 2015

I have an SSIS package that imports data from an Excel file, replaces any value in Excel that reads "NULL" to "", then writes the data to a couple of databases.

What I have discovered today, is I have two columns of dates, an admit date and discharge date column, and what I need to do is anywhere I have a null value in the discharge date column, I have to replace it with the value in the admit date column.

I have searched around online and tried a few things using the Replace funtion in Derived columns but no dice so far.

SQL Server 2012 :: Get List Of Last Non Null Values

Feb 10, 2014

I have two tables, a dates table and a values table. They are joined on the date column. The date table has a range, say from today as far as 20 days from now, incrementing by 1 day each row.The values table may have a row for a day, and may not. If the day has a value I want to display that value. If the day does not have a value in the values table I want to display the last known value.

I think this can be done with windowing functions in a set based manner but have not been able to work it out. I have done it procedurally but im not happy with that at all, and really want to see if this is possible in a set based manner.Below is some simplified code to allow testing with sample data.

SQL Server 2012 :: Producing Running Total Column In Select Clause

Jul 27, 2014

I want to create the following scenario. I have a table that stores employees working on projects and their project hours by week, but now I also need a running total per week for each of those projects. For example take a look below:

EmployeeID, Project, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,....Saturday, ProjectHours, TotalProjectHoursPerWeek(this is the column I am trying to derive), FiscalWeek

101, ProjectABC, 5,5,5,...5, 20, 40,25
102, ProjectXYZ 4,4,4,....4, 20 ,40,25
103,ProjectQWE, 2,2,2,...2, 8, 32,26
104, ProjectPOP, 6,6,6,...6, 24, 32,26

What I have tried so far:

Correlated Subquery:
SELECT EmployeeID,Project, Sunday, Monday,....Saturday, ProjectHours, SELECT(SUM(ProjectHours) FROM dbo.TableABC ap GROUP BY FiscalWeek),
FROM
dbo.TableABC a

I got this to work one time before, but now I am getting the following error:

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

SQL Server 2012 :: Update Temp Table Where The Column Names Are Unknown

Dec 26, 2013

In a stored procedure I dynamically create a temp table by selecting the name of Applications from a regular table. Then I add a date column and add the last 12 months. See attachment.

So far so good. Now I want to update the data in columns by querying another regular table. Normally it would be something like:

UPDATE ##TempTable
SET [columName] = (SELECT SUM(columName)
FROM RegularTable
WHERE FORMAT(RegularTable.Date,'MM/yyyy') = FORMAT(##TempMonths.x,'MM/yyyy'))

However, since I don't know what the name of the columns are at any given time, I need to do this dynamically.

how can I get the column names of a Temp table dynamically while doing an Update?

I was able to do it using the information_schema and using a cursor to loop through all the column names and find out which columns have data in them. But i need to know if there is a more efficient way of doing this without using the cursor. Can somebody please let me know how this can be done without using a cursor? Thank you.

customer A | 1000$ | 2000$ | 3000$
customer B | 100$ | 100$ | 200$

Is it possible to retrieve these values in a single SQL query for multiple years and grand total?

Using Values Returned From SQL For Report Column Names

Apr 17, 2008

I am building reports against our TFS development db.
One of the reports tracks days spent (Dwell Time) in various status categories (eg: New, Assigned, In Development, Hold, etc) for a given "ticket".
For a fixed list of values from {Work Item].System_State, I can send the results (days in Assigned) to the column named (Assigned) for each status for each event in the [Work Item History], and then sum them for each ticket as:
Ticket ID New Assigned InDev etc
1230001 2 0 0 ...
1230001 0 1 2 ....

SUM 2 1 2 ....
However, I have many different Projects, each of which use their own Status names.
I don't want to duplicate the same basic report, if I can avoid it.

How can I name and generate this data for the unique Status list for each Project?

Simplest analog is: name = First(Fields!Status.Value, "TFSdb")
and allows value for a column name (category) as: =IIF(Fields!Status.Value = First(Fields!Status.Value, "TFSdb"), Fields!Days.Value, 0)
However this fails beause:
1. It only delivers the FIRST status value, and,
2. I cannot SUM an expression which is itself an aggregate (using First).

Display Column Names And Its Values Programatically From The Dataset

Apr 18, 2008

Hi.

In my report, I need to display column names (and its values) from my dataset, which uses the stored procedure and within it use the PIVOT statement. I cannot use the matrix control in report since I need to add another static column to the right of the matrix, but since that cannot be done ni SQL SSRS 2005, I need to PIVOT it through stored procedure. The parameter passed to stored procedure is the year and it is used for pivot. The statement looks like this:

@sql = 'SELECT * FROM (SELECT YearId, SchoolId, ReportText, OutputValue_Text from AggregateTable) AS AGAM
PIVOT (MIN(OutputValue_Text) FOR YearId IN ([' + @YearId + '])) PVT'

EXEC(@sql)

So, since the years passed as parameters can change, I cannot hard-code it as column in my report, so I need to programatically display column names and values from my dataset, something like dataSet.Tables[0].Columns[].ColumnName; I have tried with writing the code, but I do not have much experience with it and I have not been very successful. Can someone help me with the code?

Thanks

Total/subtotal SQL ROLLUP Question

May 3, 2004

I am using the SQL GROUP BY WITH ROLLUP PER MS's

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dndive/html/data01102002.asp

To create subtotals and totals.

The problem is, I want items on every line, like transaction dates, that are neither grouped by or summed. They are just for information only.

ANSI-92 SQL does not allow any column to be selected that is either not grouped on or has an aggregate function performed.

The MS example in the link above works fine, but does not present much data.

If I wanted to sum total orders and each order's subtotal for a given customer, I would also likely want the order date, who the order was placed by, etc. in each line of the report without grouping or summing that extraneous info.

Here is an example of the SQL syntax:

SELECT
CASE GROUPING (companyId) WHEN 0
THEN (SELECT CFP..Company.companyName FROM Company WHERE Company.companyId = Activity.companyId) ELSE 'TOTAL' END AS [Company name],
CASE GROUPING (dateOrder) WHEN 0
THEN (SELECT CAST(dateOrderAS VARCHAR)) ELSE 'SUB TOTAL' END AS [dateOrder],
SUM(transactionAmount) AS [Request amount]
FROM Activity
WHERE DATEPART(year, dateOrder) = DATEPART(year, '2004')
GROUP BY companyId, dateOrderWITH ROLLUP

...

But I want more details.

SQL 2012 :: CAPS In Column Names

Aug 17, 2015

Is there a performance hit if I use CAPITOL LETTERS (like this) in column names for my SQL Server tables? Logically I would think that lower case letters would have better performance because they are smaller characters and easier to store.

Return Column Names Where Values Were Not Found [stored Procedure]

Sep 5, 2004

I need to check whether procedure found any matches or not. If not it has to return the column name where matching value was not found. For example, if there was no record found in the table "Addresses" column "customer" with the value @username, it should return "street". If id with value @prod_id was not found in the table "Products", the "productname" must be returned as well.

CREATE PROC sp_test
@id INT,
@username VARCHAR(50),
@prod_id INT
AS

SELECT name FROM Customers WHERE id=@id
SELECT street FROM Addresses WHERE customer=@username
SELECT productname FROM Products WHERE id=@prod_id

It is kind of check, which has to find out if users have inserted all the necessary values or not.
Thanks for any advice.
