SQL Server 2012 :: Check To See If Job Has Finished Before Job Starts?
Jun 23, 2015
I have a job I want to run everyday but before this job starts and I want to check and see if another job has completed before I start this job. i would like to do this in the job steps in SSMS. step 1 is job 'xxxxxxx' running if no go to step 2 if yes exit
I am working with a stored procedure that needs to roll up a week number column once a week - columns are numbered 1-10, 1 being this week, 2 being last week and so forth
Once a week the 10th column is deleted, the 9th becomes 10, the 8th becomes the 9th and so forth and the 1st is calculated the week numbers are getting all screwed up - and we think it's because one statement starts before the one before it completes the statements go like this:
delete theTable where week_num=10; update theTable set weeknum=10 where weeknum=9; update theTable set weeknum=9 where weeknum=8; and so forth
is that the reason? is there any way not to start one statement until the one before it finishes?
Is there anyway to check if server is having disk latency or IO issues?Found below in SQL error log

I have a table called SrcReg which is having a column name called IsSortSeqNo smallint. I am mapping this column in SSIS and the problem comes when I try to execute against different database which has this table but the column name as ISSortSeqNo. I mean both databases having same name but one with upper case. So SSIS fails executing due to meta validation issue. Is there any way to check whether the column name is in small case or upper case through query?
I am looking for the best way to check to see if any columns are still NULL in a record. I have a form that gets filled out by users and the values entered into TableA. There are 6 columns in the table, 5 are responses and column6 indicates if the record is complete. So I want a way to see if all of the first 5 columns are NOT NULL and, if so, mark column6 with a 1.
I am thinking this would be a good thing for a trigger on INSERT or UPDATE to check to see if the first 5 columns are filled in and then mark the record as complete.
I have a table with a column Capacity which is char(10) and gets populated from user files. I want to check records which have negative Capacity value. So i first checked if its numeric and then for negative.
select * from table WHERE ISNUMERIC(LTRIM(RTRIM(Capacity))) = 1 AND Capacity < 0
BUT still it checks for char fields too giving errors like - Conversion failed when converting the varchar value 'asdf ' to data type int.
I know how to check for a sinle vlaue but how do I chekc to see if multiple values exist. I need to check for certain email addresses from a list that I have.
Let us say I ahve 3 email addresses, I want to check for all of them in a table and for eevery email address that is present I want to print something like "You email address is XXX" and if one of those 3 is not found my results should look like
"You email address is XXX" YYYYY not found "You email address is ZZZZ"
I'm attaching some TSQL that I tried on [AdventureWorks2012].[Person].[EmailAddress]
/****** Select ALL if where an email address is present in the list ******/ SELECT EmailAddressID,EmailAddress FROM [AdventureWorks2012].[Person].[EmailAddress] WHERE EmailAddress IN ( 'ken0@adventure-works.com', --1 'terri0@adventure-works.com', --2
[Code] ....
-- Test to see if a single email address is present
IF EXISTS ( SELECT EmailAddress FROM [AdventureWorks2012].[Person].[EmailAddress] WHERE EmailAddress IN ('25rob0@adventure-works.com') ) BEGIN SELECT 'Email address is presnt'
[Code] ....
When I check multiples using EXISTS it works as per its design and says YES even if a single item is present.
I want to join 2 tables, table a and table b where b is a lookup table by left outer join. my question is how can i generate a flag that show whether match or not match the join condition ?
**The lookup table b for column id and country are always not null values, and both of them are the keys to join table a. This is because same id and country can have multiples rows in table a due to update date and posting date fields.
example table a id country area 1 China Asia 2 Thailand Asia 3 Jamaica SouthAmerica 4 Japan Asia
example table b id country area 1 China Asia 2 Thailand SouthEastAsia 3 Jamaica SouthAmerica 5 USA America
Expected output id country area Match 1 China Asia Y 2 Thailand SouthEastAsia Y 3 Jamaica SouthAmerica Y 4 Japan Asia N
I have a laptop with vista and sql 2005. When i start my computer, after it boots up and is ready to go, I look in the task manager at the process tab. Some sort of SQL Server component is running and eating up about 50k's worth of memory. What is it and how do set either Vista or SQL Server to not start whatever this is unless I do it manually(oh yeah...how would I turn it on?)and what are the ramifications of not having it start up when i start my laptop?
I know it is a rather rambling question, but its the best I can describe it. Thanks in advance for your help!
I have just installed SQL Server 2005. The machine had an expired version of SQL Express on it which I removed. Now when i go to open the Management Studio it says it can't connect. When I check the service, it is set to automatic using the local account but is not running. When I start it, it throws an error stating that it started and then stopped. The first error record in the log file states:
Server TCP provider failed to listen on [ 'any' <ipv4> 1433]. Tcp port is already in use.
Could this be causing the problem? How do I check to see what is using 1433? In general, what the heck did I do wrong during the install? One article said something about the new installation thinking it was still the expired version. Could there be something left in the registry from the old version of Express causing this?
SQL Server 2005 installed on Windows Vista Ultimate
When I try to start the agent, it return with the message that the service started and then stopped. On investigation I found that the Windows Event Log service won't start, returning the error:
"error 4201: the instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider"
(I have posted this on Windows Vista forums but had no response).
We've recently upgraded to SQL Server 2014, and are now using SSIS integrated with Visual Studio. We have a SSIS project which contains about 20 packages which are nested in Sequence Containers and executed concurrently. These packages have been set up as project references.
The problem is that when I press the start button to run the packages, they all light up green reporting completion before the data has finished loading into the SQL database. If I press the stop button without waiting a sufficient length of time, then not all of the data gets loaded. i.e. a certain number of rows will be missing from some of the SQL tables.
If I click through to the individual package items and check the data flow progress while running, some of the data flows appear to hang at a certain number of rows without ever reaching completion. The number of rows indicated in the data flow is incorrect - i.e. it will count up to ~150,000 and stay there indefinitely in the running state, when in actual fact there are ~500,000 rows to load.
To clarify, the main package will show all items green and display the "Finished: Success" message in the log window, however when I drill through to certain packages in the set, they'll be stuck in the yellow running state, with no way of knowing whether they've actually completed or not.
My current workaround is to just wait a certain length of time before pressing the stop button. This bug doesn't seem to inhibit rows being loaded - it just incorrectly identifies the point when the load finishes, causing people to terminate the load prematurely.
This issue only occurs if I run the project from the main package container. If I execute the child packages individually, they correctly report the number of rows being loaded and light up green once complete.
I have a table in sql server 2000 which has a column whose name starts with a number("2ndName").I have a c# code which updates the table by filling a Dataset. When I issue an update, it throws the following error:-"Incorrect Syntax near 2"Query I use to build the adapter is "SELECT id, Name, [2ndName] FROM MyTBL WHERE 1 = 3" and the statement issued to update is "objAdapter.Update(objDSDB, "MyTBL")" when it throws the error "Incorrect Syntax near 2".Any help to resolve this is appreciated. Thanks in advance.Jai
We have two instances of SQL Server 2005 - SP1 installed on one server. The default instance starts very slowly. When looking at the log I can see the delay is due to Resource Manager based upon the following error.
I have a database in the 3rd normalized form. There is a need to load rows into a child table. To avoid having to drop RI, an ALTER TABLE WITH NOCHECK is being used. I am looking for a way to verify the integrity after the load is complete. After the load an ALTER TABLE WITH CHECK will be executed. Can I used DBCC to verify, that no orphaned child rows were loaded? If so, which parms would I have to use with DBCC?
I have this on my page Dim backUpDB2 As SqlClient.SqlCommand backUpDB2 = New SqlClient.SqlCommand backUpDB2.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure backUpDB2.CommandText = "msdb.dbo.SP_RESUMENFAC" backUpDB2.Connection = SqlConnection1 backUpDB2.ExecuteNonQuery()
I am trying to create a SQL Job which will report on another job which hasn't finished within its normal completion time. I schedule the new job late enough after the first job that the first should have finished by then.
I would like to have just queried msdb..sysjobhistory.run_status. However, this seems to only report on job STEP status - and after the step is finished! It is always showing run status = 1 (Complete).
Does anyone know the base meta-data table and column I could query? Enterprise Manager shows the current status as running and I want to know where it gets that.
If it is still running, I will raise an error to notify our support group, etc.
PS: My job steps include a combination of DTSRun commands and TSQL commands. I don't think the flavour of commands should matter...
We have got a query for fine tuning and it is using lot of CTE ,how can i check the execution plan of that?
CREATE VIEW Mercy AS with ADR as ( SELECT urpx.RoleID , urx.UserID FROM [DBA].dbo.URPX WITH ( NOLOCK ) INNER JOIN [DBA].dbo.URX WITH ( NOLOCK ) ON urpx.RoleID = urx.RoleID WHERE PermissionID = '1' ), SDR as (

I'm a MS Access developer who needs to help someone migrate/convert from a 'finished' SQL application to Access. How do I gain access to the SQL backend so I can examine/export the raw data? For example, in Access, I would hold down the Shift key while opening the program and it would give me editing rights to the database.
Please be very specific because I have zero experience with SQL.
Currently we have a process where 4 files are ftp'd down to our server. We have DTS package which tests for the existence of these files and once these exist, the DTS package loads the data from these files into a SQL database. Sometimes, however, though the files exist they haven't finished being downloaded so that when the DTS package tries to process them the package is saying the files are empty (though they're not).
My ssis package errors out because one of the database connection failed. I successfully logged error but also indicated that package finished successfully. My confusion is if a sheduling software schedules this package, what would be return code sent by dtexe... . would it be success or failure? In this scnerio i want it to return failure so that appropriate team can be contacted.
As part of my backup routine, I have a SQL job for each DB which which is called "DB-NAME - Backup Job"
I need to put a script together to check that each database has a backup job associated to it.
select * From sys.sysdatabases where name not in ('msdb','model', 'master', 'Tempdb', 'DBA') order by name desc
select * from msdb.dbo.sysjobs order by name desc
I know all the details i need are in there, but i cant figure out the best way to tackle it. Do I need to do a cursor to go through each DB name, put it into a variable, then select the job name where name like '$variable%' ?
I want to create a check constraint on a table but the constraint values depend upon another table column as well, now one possible way is to create a function to check the column value. But I don’t want to use the function.
Can I do this in a view if so then how can I achieve this.
I created sql job using maintenance plan to run DBCC Checkdb for all databases. But I didn't choose the option Ignore databases where the state is not online. If any db is restoring the same time as DBCC Check db job running, is check db job fails?
I have a SSIS package which process 12699 files in a folder. After about 20 minutes it looks like the loading is finished (the record count of database table doesn't change any more) and I believe it's finished, but if I check the Progress tab, it's still showing the file name being processed and still moving. So my first question is: is it still loading files or it's just that the progress message is behind? Then I click on stop debugging, after a while it stopped but then it's frozen, nothing responds no matter what I click. I haven't saved the package yet so I don't want to close it out. Should I just wait? And what is the problem?
Thanks a lot for your help in advance!!
p.s. I'm exploring SSIS and will convert our current DTS packages to SSIS so you'll see me post more and more questions down the road.
Hi All, I have a solution which is synchronised with visualsourcesafe. Now there are some reports present in the solution, I am able to view the preview of the reports but when I am going to view the dataset definition It is not able to retain its defintion and its becoming blank but this happens to only datasets which were developed from cube and its able to retain dataset which are developed from Database.
I want to generate a new snapshot using stored procedures. I want to wait for the snapshot files to be created and then execute a stored procedure. What's the best way to determine that the snapshot has completed successfully? I thought of doing something like:
however I can't put the results of that proc into a temp table because I get this error: Msg 8164, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_get_composite_job_info, Line 72 An INSERT EXEC statement cannot be nested.
