Is there a limit on the size of the strings on both sides of the '=' sign for string comparison? If I have two varchar(max) strings, will the comparison be done beyond 8,000 characters?
View 1 RepliesWe can use comparison operators with strings as well. Hence, I tried to use the following query on a SQL Server 2012 instance with the sample AdventureWorks2012 database (the collation of the database and of the column is the default:
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS):

SELECT pp.Name
FROM Production.Product AS pp
WHERE pp.Name >= N'Short' AND pp.Name <= N'Sport' ;

The query only returns 5 records. This despite the fact that the search is an inclusive search and the Production.Product table contains records that begin with "Sport".
Now, when I replace "Sport" with "Sporu" (just moving one character up in the alphabet to verify whether characters after the word have any impact on the search) gives me 8 records.

SELECT pp.Name
FROM Production.Product AS pp

What's going on inside of SQL Server that allows it to fetch "Short-Sleeve Classic Jersey" for the starting word "Short" but prevents it from fetching "Sport-100 Helmet" for the ending word "Sport" despite the search being an inclusive search?
I'm having a problem with what should be a simple TSQL statement. I have a
table which has a datetime field updated. After the update if I type
select * from patient_medication where rec_status_date = '11/10/2000'
it returns the rows I want.(All the dates have a time of 00:00:00.000.
But if I type
select * from patient_medication where rec_status_date <> '11/10/2000'
or select * from patient_medication where rec_status_date != '11/10/2000'
The rows that have a value are returned, but none of the null values
are returned. Will nulls not work with this comparison?

How to parse a string to equal length substrings in SQL
I am getting a long concatenated string from a query (CTVALUE1) and have to use the string in where clause by parsing every 6 characters..

after parsing I have to use these values in a where clause like this

Now ,the values can change I mean the string may give 5 values(6 character) today and 10 tomorrow..So the parsing should be dynamic.
I have a report that I am running in visual studio 2010, that gets its data from a few different stored procedures in a SQL 2012 Database. The variables are Date and Office Code. We currently have 6 different office codes. One of the Stored Procedures gets call information for each office. With the report we can select any single office or any combination of offices to compile data.
The problem I have is two of these share phone information, so when you select either one or both of them the same data gets returned. So for example we have office codes of AAAAA, BBBBB, CCCCC, DDDDD, EEEEE, and FFFFF. Now AAAAA, and BBBBB share phone information so if you select office code AAAAA, the phone info that is returned is for AAAAA, and BBBBB, and visa versa. So I am not sure how to accomplish that either in the report or in the stored procedure.
All I have a table full of invoices and in that table there is a field named HCC. An invoice can contain multiple HCC's. I also have a table named hierarchical codes (below is an example)

My problem is if i have more than on line on my invoice, for example 2 lines, the value of column [Value of Cost of invoice in accountancy] are duplicated, for 3 line invoice the value are multiply by 3.
how SQL 2012 would treat a literal string for a comparison similar to below. I want to ensure that the server isn't implicitly converting the value as it runs the SQL, so I'd rather change the data type in one of my tables, as unicode isn't required.

It's because you're relying on an implicit conversion from a string to a decimal data type which SQL server will do to 2 decimal places by default...
Alright:
SELECT ROUND (CONVERT(DECIMAL(3,2),'6.465'),2) --- result 6.47 Now please explain this:

SELECT ROUND(0.285,2) -- 0.29
SELECT ROUND (CONVERT(DECIMAL(3,2),'0.285'),2) --- result 0.29 The string value does not seem to be converted to decimal with 2 decimal places.
MS is on the safe side with mentioning the last digit is always an estimate But because the result of the estimate is always the same, I would like to know:
* how is a string value exactly implicitly converted?
* how exactly does the estimation work, that in case of doubt rounds a value up or off?
I am trying to write a function to compare the characters between 2 strings and eliminate the similarities to be able to return at the end the number of differences between them.
Having in mind i need the bigger number of differences to be returned also if a character is repeated in one of the 2 words it will be eliminated once because it exist only one time in other string.
I will give an example below to be more clear

In my report, I am having Listbox for users to choose Country, City & Company.
The user can choose Country. Based on the country selection, cities will be listed out.
Based on the city selection, Companies will be listed out.
They can choose companies.
Now, I have to show two set of results.
A. List of Companies as per selection ( dataset with equal to selection )
B. List of Companies which are not selected ( ie dataset with not equal to selection )
I have created a dataset with all companies and filter it by selection. When I tried with the filter option in the Dataset, I am able to check for only one value and not for multiple value. If the selection is one company, then I can filter it. But if they choose 5 companies, I am not not able to filter it. Is there any other option I can try out.

I am comparing two fields one from our legacy table and one in our new table structure that should have identical text data. The new field has an assortment of ANSI characters where the legacy data did not have these. Is there anything I can do that will ignore all ansi character differences? The only route I can think of is just do a replace on each ANSI type on the new column but there are quite a few character types.

I thought a nice idea would be to assigne a text string/null value to each bit field and concatenate all of them into a result.
This is the basic logic goes soemthing like this:
select case new_accountant = 1 then 'acct/' end +
case new_advisor = 1 then 'adv/' end +
case new_attorney = 1 then 'atty/' end as String
from new_database
The output would be
Null, acct/, adv/, atty, acct/adv/, acct/atty/... acct/adv/atty/
So far, nothing I have tried has worked.
Any ideas?
How to find the equal and opposite rows in a table.

As many of you know I've been hunting down a SQL CE alternative / embedded DB that is easily portable among handhelds.
It turns out, that without paying for some other DB, there really aren't any good ones... Unless you go GPL, and the interpretation of GPL that most are using is that your code too is GPL even though you may only Dynamically Link to their app. I think this is likely wrong, but none the less I'm back here yet again.
What I'm looking for this time is a definition of how SQL Server CE is implemented, how it differs from a full blown DB, etc, so I can more thourally explain "why SQL CE" is an embedded DB, and how it isn't the full blown SQL Server that has a bad reputation with some.
My guess is:
SQL Server CE is implemented via DLL. There aren't sockets etc to allow you to connect, and it operates more like an advanced hash on the file system.
Please correct me if i'm wrong, or... send me a link where I can further research. Also, if you have another embedded DB as a suggestion, that's free of course, please point it my way.

The trouble is that the comparison (the BINARY_CHECKSUM) is failing on the EarningsReportDate column, which is defined on BOTH servers in DUPLICATE databases as a smalldatetime.
The data is actually the same in both rows of each table (as is all the other data being compared). What I am seeing is that the select returns milliseconds on the LINKED server (the L_TA_MIRROR reference), but not on the local database?
for example,
Local server data returned in above select is 2000-01-28 00:00:00
Linked server data returned in above select is 2000-01-28 00:00:00.000
Wassup with THAT? If I remove the date from the select/comparison, it says everything matches, so I am pretty sure this is the culprit that is causing the BINARY_CHECKSUM comparison to fail.
Is there some setting that I need to put on the Linked Server reference that says "treat this as the smalldatetime data type it IS, dammit!"????
I can get by the issue if I replace the date reference in the linked server part of the select with CAST(TA2.EarningsReportDate AS smalldatetime) but why do I have to do this?
Yes, I am SURE both servers have the column in question defined as a smalldatetime, as running the same select on either server causes the same failure, but only when referencing the LINKED server column.
Hi, I'm looking for a tool to compare 2 sql server database and makes a script of the differences (like an added table or record). We want to use it to generate a script which we can send to our customers to update their database if a change has been made. Example: We send our customers database A. After half a a year they request some changes to be made to the application that affects the database, say a table has to be added. We want the tool to automatically detect the difference between database A when it was first released and after the changes has been made and generate a script. Anyone suggestions? T.I.A., ratjetoes.

We recently upgradedfrom MS SQL Server 6.5 to MS SQL Server 2000 on Computer A, and forComputer B, I installed SQL Server 2000 from scratch. These two have asame RAM(512MB) and CPU speed...so the setup for hardware is almostidentical...For server A, there are around 10 connection to this SQL Server...For server B, there are also around 10 connection to this SQLServer...The database for SQL Server B is a copy from SQL Server A.... Irestored the database on SQL Server B from the backup dump of ServerA...We have a store procedure called usp_GetMemo(ID Interger) ... we feedID number to this store procedure and return its return Description...this table has ID column and it's Non-Cluster index, allow theduplicate row... there are 1.7 million records for this table...Here is problem... whenever i execute more than 100 times for thisstore procedure(usp_GetMemo(ID)) continuously, the CPU usage ofComputer A is 3 times bigger than computer B....I did run the command "DBCC DBReindex" , "Update Statistics" for thistable on computer A, but did not make any difference...Keep in mind that Computer A has been upgraded to SQL server 2000while Computer B installed from scratch... would that make differencesomehow?? I have a strange problem with one of my Linked server connections. I am connecting from
SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (9.00.3042.00) to and Oracle 10g database using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle. The connection works and I am able to select from all the Oracle tables except for 1 table. When selecting from this table I get the following error:
OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "DBNAME" returned message "ORA-01476: divisor is equal to zero".
Msg 7330, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot fetch a row from OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "DBNAME".
This probem happens if the table has rows or has no rows (empty table).
I have tried SELECT * and count(*) along with selecting a specific column from the table.
I can use SQL*plus from the system that the SQL database server running on it and select from the table using the same login/password that the linked server uses to rule out a permissions problem.
Any suggestions on what I can try next?

How can we handle transactions in SSIS
1. when some error/something happens during export and the # of rows are not exported fully to destination, how to rollback the transaction in SSIS.

I should start by saying that I'm new to SQL Server and ASP.NET. My question is about connection strings. With so many possibilities of these strings, how will I ever know what is best to use or try when one does not work. Is there a rule of thumb or an article or even a book that someone can recommend? Something that will demystify this part of working with the SQL Server and ASP.NET?

i am trying to concatenate strings in SQL Server by using '+' operator. but the problem is i have a code like this 1201 and another code like 0003 and when i use + operator. it removes the leading zeroes. i dont want to remove the leading zeros. how do i do this
