SQL Server 2012 :: Loading And Reformatting Text File Data Into Table
May 29, 2015
I am looking for a way to convert the following format into a sql table. The format it is Bib Tex.
Essentially a new row in the table would be for each entry, denoted by an @ logo and each column is denoted by an =, as you can see from the example data no one contains all the possible columns and some fields can be over two lines long.
To load this I was considering loading it into a table as each line being a row. Adding a row number, then a column counting the @ signs in order and essentially grouping each record, then for each group running through and looking for the column keywords 'author' , 'title' etc then splitting the data out into those constituent parts using substring and charindex.
@Book{hicks2001,
author = "von Hicks, III, Michael",
title = "Design of a Carbon Fiber Composite Grid Structure for the GLAST
Spacecraft Using a Novel Manufacturing Technique",
publisher = "Stanford Press",
year = 2001,
[Code] ....

Hello!! searching information about how to migrate some date from an old data base (any tipe) from SQL I´v found this:
LOAD DATA [LOW_PRIORITY | CONCURRENT] [LOCAL] INFILE 'file_name.txt'
[REPLACE | IGNORE]
INTO TABLE tbl_name
[FIELDS
[TERMINATED BY 'string']
[[OPTIONALLY] ENCLOSED BY 'char']
[ESCAPED BY 'char' ]
]
[LINES
[STARTING BY 'string']
[TERMINATED BY 'string']
]
[IGNORE number LINES]
[(col_name_or_user_var,...)]
[SET col_name = expr,...)]
Does anybody know how does it works and how to use it????I´d like to know because I have to load data from a text file to a SQL Data Base and this seems to be te fastest an easiest way to do it...Thanks!!!!bye!

Each month we process 100+ text files into our ERP system. Occasionaly the Voucher Date in the text file does not contain a valid date. I would like to check to see if it is a valid Date, if it isn't replace it with the current date.
I thought I would use a Derived Column transformation, but I don't know how to check a field to see if it is a valid date.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Jeff

I am trying to load 14+ million rows from a text file into local Sql Server. I tried using Sql Server destination because it seemed to be faster, but after about 5 million rows it would always fail. See various errors below which I received while trying different variations of FirstRow/LastRow, Timeout, Table lock etc. After spending two days trying to get it to work, I switched to OLE DB Destination and it worked fine. I would like to get the Sql Server Destination working because it seems much faster, but the error messages aren't much help. Any ideas on how to fix?
Also, when I wanted to try just loading a small sample by specifying first row/last row, it would get to the upper limit and then picked up speed and looked like it kept on reading rows of the source file until it failed. I expected it to just reach the limit I set and then stop processing.

I have a directory with images and a table in my DB with the path of each file. The main application allow me to create reports where I can display an image, so I was thinking to use a query like:
SELECT [ID]
,[PT_CODE]
,[FILE_PATH],
CASE WHEN [FILE_PATH] IS NOT NULL THEN
(SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK [FILE_PATH], SINGLE_BLOB) TT)
END
AS IMAGE_LOADED
FROM [DB].[dbo].[TABLE_MR_FILES]But I keep getting the error:
Incorrect syntax near 'FILE_PATH'.I have try multiple combinations without luck to make the OPENROWSET read the path stored in the column [FILE_PATH]. What am I missing?
Note: I am using MSSQL 2012. I don't want to import the images into the DB just load them in the fly as needed by the report runned from the application. I have full access to the DB so if a store procedure is the solution I can go with it.

I’m looking for clearity on partition switching. The idea is to use many BULK INSERT statements into table dbo.X_n in parallel and when BULK INSERT for table dbo.X_n is completed, switch dbo.X_n into dbo.bigdaddy. I think this is the fastest way to upload a couple hundred GB of data.
In learning about partition switching (in part) from The Data Loading Performance Guide under Partition SWITCH, I hear the instructions to say copy the main table exactly to become a target. But in that same step (#1), I read that we need to change the default file group of the target (dbo.X_n) from the default file group. Then it says I need to match indexes and lists the filegroup as something we need to match with the main table.
As an overview of the partition switching strategy, I think the whole point of BULK INSERT with partitioning is to have seperate files (in same group) to enable concurrent uploading where each table has its own file. Once the upload is completed to a table (dbo.X_n) then we do the partition switch into the main table (dbo.bigdaddy). The data we just uploaded doesn’t actually move, just the metadata for it.
“Don’t have the same filegroup on your target as the main table. You must have the same filegroup on your target as the main table.”

I am so new to SQL Server 2005 and just studying. Saying that...
We use SQL Server 2005 Express edition. Some one sent me a file (info.mdb) and asked me to load the data in this file in to a table called Products and also asked me to load in another table (ProdCat) where id = 'X05'.
So being not knowing anyting regarding data loading etc, how should I do this and proceed? The .mdb means its a Access database file? If that is the case, I dont have Access in my machine and what should I do?

I have the misfortune of converting a DTS package to SSIS that loads a flat file that has a text fields that can contain embedded text delimiters ("), column delimiters (,) and even new lines (CR+LF i.e.,hex 0D 0A) in it. A sample line from the file is posted here, remember this is just one line though it shows as three lines, since the third field has embedded new line in it:
4,"Sam","EVP; MARKETING PRODUCT MANAGER ""Level I"",
Internet Sales / HELP
8005551212",100
If you open in excel it handles it perfectly showing four fields, as below, and this is what I want ( I cannot get it aligned right in the posting, just save the above line in *.csv and open to see what it should be):
4 Sam "EVP; MARKETING PRODUCT MANAGER ""Level I"", 100
Internet Sales / HELP
8005551212"
Now, SSIS errors on the embedded text delimiters and breaks into two or three lines based on which option I chose. I have tried few options based on postings in the forum:
a). Using undouble and undoubleout: Does not work when there are embedded column delimiters (,) in the text field
b). Modified undouble script posted by lvovg at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1718225&SiteID=1. Handles the embedded column delimiters (,) perfectly, but the embedded new lines (CR+LF i.e.,hex 0D 0A) are breaking it.
Since, I am using the ragged right format to read from the file then use transform script on the line by lvovg, the line is already broken by the ragged right format at the embedded new lines, hence does not work.
Right now I am stuck. Can someone please help (anyone from MS) ? I am already baffled at the amount of coding required to convert a very basic ( and working ) flat file load DTS package to SSIS. I am willing to persist bit longer to convert this to SSIS, before I give up and stick with DTS and wait for a fix / workaround.
Thanks.

In MySQL, I use "LOAD DATA INFILE 'my_path/data_file.txt'" to load datafrom a plain text file. Of course, the actual statement is a bit morecomplex once one considers the various options (e.g. comma delimited vstab delimited, record termination strings, &c.).My problem is that I have yet to find the equivalent within MS SQLserver. I did find a LOAD statement in T-SQL, but at first glance itseems to do something completely different.How does one normally load data from a plain text file into a table inMS SQL? This needs to be relatively efficient since, once inproduction, it will be used to load tens of megabytes of data into thedatabase (a feed from a data provider). Is it flexible enough to allowme to specify whether the fields are tab delimited vs comma delimited,optionally enclosed by quotes, record termination charactors, &c.?All I really need is direction to the right part of the T-SQL reference(MS SQL Server 2005). Anything else, such as examples, is icing on thecake.ThanksTed

I need to export data from a table to a text file, where the data in the table is deleted after written to the file. It is simple using DTS, but I want to do the export in "chunks" of data, committing the delete say after every 1000 rows.
My thought was a stored procedure would be easy enough to do this (done these in Oracle many times), but I don't know the quickest way to export a row of data from a stored procedure to a text file. Isn't using a command-line shell too slow? What are my options?

Hello,
I have an application taht requires the use of a table. The device that this application works on, has a local memory that does not allow me to insert the 800,000 records that I need. Therefore I have two approaches:
1. To insert less records into my local memory database e.g 40,000 but not row by row, bulk insert is better. How do I do the bulk insert?
2. This is the most prefferable way: To find a way to insert all 800,000 records into a table on the storage card which is 1GB. What do you suggest? Will using threads be helpfull? Any ideas?
I use C# from VS 2005, SQL ME, compact framework 2.0 and windows 4.2.
Thanks in advance,
John.

I am running backups on SQL Sever express and I take backups via the batch file executing the TSQL as below. This works perfectly fine, I just need to be able to spool out the backup completion log. What TSQL command can I use to do that?
My batch file looks like this:
@echo off
sqlcmd -S SERVER01 -E -i H:master_scriptsTOM_FAM_log.sql
Which will the call the TOM_FAM_log.sql :
DECLARE @name VARCHAR(50) -- database name
DECLARE @path VARCHAR(256) -- path for backup files
DECLARE @fileName VARCHAR(256) -- filename for backup
DECLARE @fileDate VARCHAR(20) -- used for file name
SET @path = 'H:BackupTOM_FAM'
[Code] ....
Usually if we schedule the backups using the maintenance plan, we can chose reporting options that can spool the result of the backup to a text file. What is the T-SQL for the spool report to a text file.
This option produces a file that writes logs with the details I posted below. I would like to do the same or similar using T-SQL in my code.
Microsoft(R) Server Maintenance Utility (Unicode) Version 11.0.3000
Report was generated on "SERVER01".
Maintenance Plan: Backup logs
Duration: 00:00:00
Status: Succeeded.

I want to check a table to see what rows have been updated today, then write to a text file some data from the selected rows; then I want to automate this (DTS package? TSQL stored procedure job?) to run every night at midnight. Is the DTS Wizard the best way, that's what I did, but have not confirmed that it is writing a new text file every day, and does each new version write over the old one?

Hello all,
Please help....
I have a text file which needs to be created into a table (let's call it DataFile table). For now I'm just doing the manual DTS to import the txt into SQL server to create the table, which works. But here's my problem....
I need to extract data from DataFile table, here's my query:
select * from dbo.DataFile
where DF_SC_Case_Nbr not like '0000%';
Then I need to create a new table for the extracted data, let's call it ExtractedDataFile. But I don't know how to create a new table and insert the data I selected above into the new one.
Also, can the extraction and the creation of new table be done in just one stored procedure? or is there any other way of doing all this (including the importation of the text file)?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
