SQL Server 2014 :: Can Get User Windows Login When Using Server Login Authentication

Apr 26, 2015

Oracle and Teradata are able to capture the windows/client login that connects to their database with a functionnal ID.I've searched around and I don't think MS SQL can do this...I administer SQL 2014 server and also SAS Enterprise guide product. I've created sql server logins for several teams so everyone shares the same sql server login which is used to bind the SAS library to my SQL server database.

However, when looking at activity monitor, I can't drill down to which user is executing a particular query. I only see the SQL login which is share amongs 200 other folks.On the other hand, when they connect from SAS to Oracle or Teradata, I can see the shared login + additionally their windows NT login used to connect to SAS which is awesome....they can't fool me by using a shared/funcionnal ID....i still see who's using that ID...

Intranet, Windows Authentication, Sql Server Login Failed For User '(null)'

Mar 31, 2006

Hi--
I am building an intRAnet website using windows authentication for website access and SQL Server access ( Trusted_Connection = true ).
In IIS I have these settings:

Allow Anonymous = unchecked (false)
Windows Authentication = Checked (true)
Digest windows = checked (true)
In my Web.Config file:

authentication="windows"
impersonate="true"
allowusers="*"
When I pull up the page these are my credentials:
Security.Principal.Windows:                  mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page)
Me.User.Identity:                                  mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page)
Threading.currentThread.currentUser    mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page)

So the ASP.NET page recognizes it is me and my domain.  However, when i click a button to pull some data from a database I get the error message: Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
My data access on SQL Server works fine.  The weird thing is when I debug on my machine it pulls data fine.  but when I copy the files to the windows 2003 server it doesn't work.
Do i have to do something with delegation?

Windows Authentication - Cannot Generate SSPI Context - Login Failed For User ''. The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL

May 29, 2007

We are looking at developing an SQL Server 2005 Database and I would like to use Windows Authentication rather than SQL Server Authentication to connect our client app.

In our development environment, we have two Servers, one being used as a file server and the other as an SQL Server. We have now set up a domain using the file server as the domain controller. (We had previously been set up to use a workgroup).

I have set up an active directory group called SqlDevelopers and added an active directory user called Jonathan to it.

On the SQL Sever, in management studio, I have set up a new server login which uses windows authentication called DomainSqlDevelopers. I used the GUI to verify I could see the domain and the group.

The default database is set to a test database on the server. A user in the test database is mapped to the DomainSqlDevelopers and given the Roles dbo, db_datareader, db_datawriter.

To test the log in, on the server, I logged out as administrator and in as Jonathan. I could successfully access the server through management studio using windows authentication.

However, if I log in as Jonathan on my client PC and try to access the SQL Server using management studio and windows authentication, I have problems.

The first time I try I will get a timeout error. If I try again will get either:

Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection

Or

Cannot generate SSPI context

I can€™t determine any pattern to which of the above errors I get.

However, if I log in as administrator on my client PC, I can connect to the server using management studio and windows authentication.

Sounds like Active Directory/Domain or other Network issue (Not really my area). I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks,

Jon

Login Failed For User '(null)' Error When Trying To Use Windows Authentication

Feb 6, 2006

I'm working on an ASP.NET project, and we're attempting to switch from SQL Server authentication to Windows authentication to connect to the database.
It works fine locally when I debug in Visual Studio, but when it hits the web server, I get the error: "Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
IIS has anonymous access disabled, and Integrated Windows Authentication is checked. The web.config file has:
<authentication mode="Windows"/><identity impersonate="true"/>
The database I'm attempting to access is on a different machine than IIS, and the connection string doesn't contain a username or password, and has "Trusted_Connection=Yes", and "Integrated Security=SSPI".
From what I've been able to find online, I'm guessing the problem is due to IIS and SQL Server residing on different machines, but I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any ideas?

Windows Authentication Login Permissions

Feb 18, 2002

Hi,

I have created a Windows user login and have granted it the appropriate roles (including a revoke).
As a test I also created a standard user and gave it the same roles as above.
When I run a query against the revoked table, the results are unexpected.
The Windows user can run the query, and the standard user gets a permissions error (which is what i expect).

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is happening here? I am still confused.... Does it have anything to do with the public permission that much be granted?

Thanks

How To Create A Windows Authentication Login

Jan 16, 2007

Is it possible to create a windows authentication login for each of the computers on my network that will connect to sql server. I am developing a program that will be installed on multiple computers and we do not want to actually have to log in to sql server since we will have to log in to the server before opening the program and we dont want to have 2 logins. I would like to use windows authentication so that I do not have to program multiple connection strings in my program so that if more than 1 person accesses the database at the same time it will not cause a problem with using the same login. Is this possible and if so how would I go about setting up the logins. I am using SQL Server 2005 and XP SP2

Permissions Not Effective For Windows Authentication Login

Jul 7, 2007

Hello All,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this puzzle.

Most logins I've created have been SQL Server authenticated. I assign the login newEmployee to a role existingRole, and ensure the role has the required permissions. This didn't seem to be rocket science....

My company has been provided with an application with a SQL Server back-end. My instructions were to create a Windows authenticated login and give it full access to the database. I followed the above principles, but running the application, the user got the error -

SELECT permission denied on object 'sysobjects', database 'databasename', owner 'dbo'.

So I decided to try the simplest possible scenario to make it work:

I've created a login DOMAINewEmployee with Windows authentication.

DOMAINewEmployee has been granted access to databasename.

By default, DOMAINewEmployee is a member of Public.

Public has been granted all available permissions on all objects.

ie... grant all on userTables to public

........grant all on sysobjects to public

........grant all on otherSystemTables to public

etc.

Running the application, the user still gets the above error. I'd send the problem back to the vendor, except if I've logged onto the PC as DOMAINewEmployee, querying -

select * from dbo.sysobjects

via Query Analyser produces the same error message. (An equivalent error message is produced when querying a user-created table).

To compare, I then created a login newEmployee2 with SQL Server authentication.

newEmployee2 has been granted access to databasename.

select * from dbo.sysobjects

runs successfully from Query Analyser (as to any queries on user-created tables).

What else is required to grant access to tables from a Windows authenticated login?

( What really scares me, is that the application will run if I make the Windows authenticated login a member of server roles System Administrator and Database Creators, then the application will run - but I don't want this to be the permanent solution. Even after doing this, the above query still fails in Query Analyser for that login, suggesting that there is something wrong with how I configured the permissions. )

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Kim.

SQL Security :: Windows Authentication Login Is Created Automatically In DB

Apr 24, 2015

In my DB (SQL 2012) one windows authentication is created automatically and a schema is created exactly automatically that this user is owner of this schema. (e.g the user is domainx and schema exactly domainx).

I created a DDL Trigger on my DB to find out who and how it is created , but I didn't get any useful information.

I change the owner of schema that I can delete the schema and after that delete the user, and sometimes because the user is owner of a service , I have to alter the owner of the service to DBO and delete the user , but again and again exactly this user and schema (e.g domaninx ) are created as soon as I delete it.

I have read these topics : [URL] .... and [URL] .... but can't solve my problem.

How To Connect To Sql Server As Other's Window Login Rather Than User's Window Login Thorugh ASP.NET.

Dec 14, 2006

Dear members,

In MSDN, it says that it is recommended to use windows authentication to connect to SQL Server rather than use mixed authentication.

I create user deltasqluser on windows OS, and I specify in my webform ASP.NET script below :

protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label Label1;
private string _connString = @"data source=deltasql2000;initial catalog=northwind;integrated security=false;user id=deltasqluser";
/*
comment : I login to my windows as deltakoronx, and I want to every user (including me), connected to sql server through IIS, will be identified as deltasqluser not as user's login (impersonate)
*/
private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(_connString);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
cmd.Connection = conn;
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "select suser_sname()";

conn.Open();

string userName = cmd.ExecuteScalar() as string;
conn.Close();
conn.Close();
Label1.Text = userName;
}

at web.config, I add :
<identity impersonate="false" userName="deltasqluser" password="" />

at IIS webApplication1's properties, tab "Directory Security", at "Authentication and access control" section, I checked "enable anonymous access" with user : DELTAIUSR_DELTA and checked "Integrated Windows Authentication",

at query analyzer, I login as "sa" and execute script below :
exec sp_grantdbaccess 'deltasqluser','northwind'

when I run the ASP.NET script, error at conn.Open(); with error message :
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.

What should I do so that IIS login to SQL Server as user deltasqluser not as "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" ?

Koronx

Cannot Open Database XXXX Requested By Login. The Login Failed. Login Failed For User 'xxx'

Mar 18, 2007

hi,
 so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login.  The login failed.  Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database.  I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account.  Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too.  But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database.  If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped.  Any ideas?

Login Failed For User '' ..... Sql Server, Error: 18452 (The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL Server Connection)

Nov 7, 2007

Hi

Last week I was receiving an error when trying to connect to two of our seven sql servers from my laptop via my domain admin account. The only fix was to have my laptop rebuilt and everything re-installed.

Today however another administrator is starting to have the same problem but to only one of the seven servers!
When that administrator uses my laptop with her domain admin account it works!?

What could possibly be going wrong with our laptops? We have not installed or changed anything.

The full error message we see:

Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. (Microsoft Sql Server, Error: 18452)

The error being logged on the server: (two errors are logged each time)

SSPI handshake failed with error code 0x8009030c while establishing a connection with integrated security; the connection has been closed. [CLIENT: 53.35.165.148]

Aspclassic On IIS7 SQL 2005. ODBC SQL Server Driver[SQL Server]Cannot Open Database Requested By The Login. The Login Failed

Apr 16, 2008

Hi all,

Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors.
First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.

My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "mydatabasename" requested by the login. The login failed.
/index.asp, line 10 which is dbConnect.Open cstring

from this peice of code:

sub dbOpen()
set dbConnect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cstring = "DSN=mysqldsn; Trusted Connection=yes"
dbConnect.Open cstring
end sub

I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)

I also notice under mywebsite home panel there is a connection string option. Do I do anything with that?

Definatley a lot more to it than XP's II6!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can Report Results Be Filtered By Windows User Login?

May 2, 2007

Good morning,

I'm in the process of creating a report to show employees and managers holiday and absence information. Is there a way of filtering the results of the report based on who is running the report, so that employees could only see their own information and managers could only see theirs and their subordinates information?

What I was hoping to do was create a lookup table which cross-references Windows logins with employee numbers and then use this information to pass a parameter to the SQL query, but I don't know how to retrieve the login from the machine being used to view the report.

I've heard about row level security and it seems ideal in theory but I fear the implimentation of row level security would be far beyond my meagre knowledge.

Any constructive suggestions welcomed.

Thanks,

Paul
