Naming Standards For SQL Objects
Sep 2, 1998I was wondering if there are generally accpeted naming standards for SQL Server ojbects (tables, store procedeures, triggers, views etc.) that might be available somewhere on the WEB. I was also wondering if most DBA`s prefix the object names like "sp_" or suffix the object like "Customer_T"? Any opinions?

Target_Audiences
Target_Audience_ID
Target_Audience
This table is really straight forward, but let me know if you would change anything. I want to use all of the most common naming standards throughout my database.
SQL Server Admin 2014 :: System Objects Could Not Be Updated In Database X Because It Is Read-only
Jul 27, 2015We installed SP1 for SQL Server 2014 this past weekend and got this error message in the logs. I found that if you set the db to read-write, it updates the system objects, even after SP1 has completed. Then you can set it back to read-only. I'm just posting this so other people can find it on the internet, as I wasn't able to find it specifically.
Error Log Entry:System objects could not be updated in database 'x' because it is read-only.
Problem: After installing SP1 for SQL Server 2014 you will find this message in the error logs saying read-only databases could not be updated.
Solution: Simply set the db to read-write and the system objects will get updated, long after SP1 was installed.
ALTER DATABASE [x] SET READ_WRITE WITH NO_WAIT
Then set it back to read-only:
ALTER DATABASE [x] SET READ_ONLY WITH NO_WAIT
You should then see these log entries:
System objects could not be updated in database 'x' because it is read-only.
Setting database option READ_WRITE to ON for database 'x'.
Starting up database 'x'.
CHECKDB for database 'x' finished without errors on 2015-07-25 01:02:28.143 (local time). This is an informational message only; no user action is required.
Synchronize Database 'x' (129) with Resource Database.
Setting database option READ_ONLY to ON for database 'x'.
Starting up database 'x'.
CHECKDB for database 'x' finished without errors on 2015-07-25 01:02:29.888 (local time). This is an informational message only; no user action is required.
How To Find Objects That Are Not Following Naming Convention

I have an assignment to change names of the SPs that are not following Standard naming convention in all databases. For this first I need to find out all the SPs that are not following naming convention. Can anybody help me in finding out the objects that are not following standard naming conventions. It is first step in completing this assignment. If anybody deal with this type of task before please guide me.

May 15, 2014Displaying a list of parent and child objects in a certain way, here's the code to create and populate an example dataset.

The 3 OrgUnits with no parentID in one column (parentOU), then any OrgUnits who's parentID matches the orgunitid of the 3 OrgUnits in ParentOU in the next column (Child OU1), followed by any OrgUnits who's parentID matched the orgunitID of the OrgUnits in 'Child OU1' would be in the third column (Child OU2)
The dataset I'm working on contains ~700 rows and the OrgUnitNames can be anything, they aren't labelled like the example dataset with 1.1.1 and so on.

We are preparing a migration to SQL 2014, and the administrator is complaining he won't adopt this structure on the new servers because 'there is no benefit' and 'a backup cannot be restored (!?)'.

Jan 21, 2015I have an application that stores xml data in an unusal manor. Basically a SQL Key column and an XML string.The XML string is not really standard XML, but it is what it is, and I'm stuck with it. It is in the format;

I am able to pull values out via

However I've been struggling with selecting row with a LIKE clause. Something like ;
SELECT *
FROM dbo.F_UserXMLTable
where XMLRECORD.value('(./c1)[1]', 'VARCHAR(8000)') like 'First%'
I have tried a number of permutations of XML syntax but so far have been stumpled.
Please note "<row key="Value.01" xml:space="preserve">" has a <SP> in the name 'row key' .

SQL Database Naming
Jul 18, 2007I'm creating a new database for an application that I wish to sell in the future. When we sell it the client will have the option to host is or have us host it. I want to create a name for the database that doesn't describe what the product is. I also want to be able to create new databases if we host it and those names be of a similar convention or subject. I was thinking each would be a Greek god, galaxy names or something along those lines. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What Encryption (eg AES128) Standards Are Supported For SQL Server Compact 3.5 On WM5 And WM6?
Apr 15, 2008I was told that AES 128/SHA1 is supported for SQL Server Compact 3.5. The problem is that I couldn't find any product literature from Microsoft that specifies exactly that and my client wants us to provide proof on that.
I hope to get the endorsement from the forum here, and it would be great if someone could point me to some Microsoft resources that specifies the support clearly.

Dec 15, 2006Hi,I have to prepare an ER diagram for the objects in my SQL Serverdatabase. I have used the option "DIAGRAMS" in EnterPrise Manager ofSQL Server 2000. It is creating the diagram for the selected tables(but the diagram contains only the table which i have selected. It isnot displaying its depended tables). But i am not able to export it toany of the flat file like MS WORD or paint. I want this diagram to beuploaded to one Flat file and send to my customer for his reference.Could anyone suggest me how to create the ER Diagram for the SQL 2000database and export it to a flat file.Thanks for your help in advance.-Rao

Jan 12, 2007I just upgraded to SQLServer 2005 Standard. I do development in adatabase on one server. When a solution is completely tested, I moveit to the operational database on a different server. With SQLServer2000, I could just open the .adp file and do File->Get ExternalData->Import to move the objects. That does not work with 2005.What is the recommended method for moving objects from one database toanother? Obviously, the objects that changed will not be the sameevery time.Thanks!Jer

Nov 20, 2013passing serialised objects to a stored procedure for the purpose of data inserts. I see this as being a way to handle multiple row inserts efficiently.
However, in my limited use of XML data I am not so sure how to link the data when I have a dependency on another "object" within the serialised XML.
Below is a code snippet showing what I have so far.
The first insert statement works fine - but how to retrieve the identifier created by the DB - I want to use an SQL statement that finds the record in the table based on the XML representation (of the PluginInfo), allowing me to insert the ConfigurationInfo with the correct reference to the PluginInfo

Sep 3, 2014I did tried the encryption on server "A" for database "AdventureWorks2012". Then I tried to restore to server "B". There was the certificate issue, and I thought "of course : it's encrypted ! Let's deactivate it". So here I go "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2012 SET ENCYRPTION OFF".I look at sys.databases : not encrypted.I backup using no encryption, I verify using msdb.dbo.backupset : not encrypted.
I move my backup to my other server where encryption was never configured (so no certificate, nothing...), and I have the error :

SQL Server 2014 :: Restoring Database Programmatically But Not Over Existing Live Database
Aug 6, 2015I want to restore a database (from an encrypted .bak file) - but *not* over the live original if you take my meaning. Encryption is the standard AES-256 that comes with Sql Server 2014 btw. I don't want the original touched/altered in any way. I would like to capture a success message if possible.I can extract the physical device name of the database in question using the following code:

Mar 30, 2015We are consolidating some old SQL server-environments from 'OLD' to 'NEW' and one of our vendors is protesting on behalve of the collation we use on our 'NEW' SQL server.
Our old server (SQL 2005) contains databases with collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
Our new server (2014) has the standard collation Latin1_General_CI_AS
Both collations have CI and AS
From experience I know different databases can reside next to eachother on the same Instance.
The only problem could be ('could be !!') the use of TempDB with a high volume of transaction to be executured in TempDB and choosing for Snapshot Isolation Level ....
The application the databases belong to is very static, hardly updated, and questioned only several time per hour (so no TempDB issue I guess).

In our environment we are using monutdisks in both the servers. in primary for ex we have F drive for data files under mount disk 3 in mirror server also we have same drive but in mount drive2.
As per my knowledge if it is same drives we can add the ndf files in the primary that will reflect on mirror. but in current situation i am confusing about mount points with different names.

The access database file path is - 'C:SQL ProjectTestDB1001.mdb'.The Table from which I want to import the data is - [Table1001]. but when I run this script, I get this error -9 The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "MSAccessConnect" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Secondly I need to make 2 more changes to the code posted above.
1.If some access database .mdb, has got password protection, then how to include the password in the script, so that one does not have to manually feed in the password during data import work.
2. How to limit the data that is to be imported from the table [Table1001] by including a WHERE Clause, like for example - SELECT * FROM [Table1001] WHERE xdate = '2015-9-16 00:00:00.000')
