SQL Server 2014 :: How To Encrypt And Check A Login Password

Jul 6, 2014

I am trying to learn how to store a web form password and than check it when the user log in. So far none of the code I can find works.

Why the following test does not work and what the correct code should be?

Insert Into [user]
values ('name', 'email', HashBytes('SHA1', 'bob'))
GO

Why does the following produce no rows?

SELECT *
From [user]
Where HashBytes('SHA1', password) = HashBytes('SHA1', 'bob')

SQL Server Agent Job Will Not Retain Package Password (encrypt Sensitive With Password)

Apr 1, 2008

I have a package protected by a password - I am already unhappy that to get it to use the configuration file to change connection strings for the production servers I have had to hardcode the password into the config file - very insecure!
However, the package now deploys correctly to the production server and will run from there OK, but NOT if scheduled as a SQL Server Agent Job. Thus is because however often I edit the command line to include the password after the DECRYPT switch (which it has prompted me for when I click on the command line tab), the Job Step will not retain it.
If I open it up after I have edited it and closed it, the password has disappeared.

I know that if I run dtexec plus the code in the Command Line tab (with the password), the package runs OK.

This is driving me insane!
I have read all the other posts and so I tried replacing the SSIS package step with a CmdExec step and pasting that code into there - then I get an OLEDB error..

The code I use is:
DTEXEC /SQL "ImportRateMonitoringTables" /SERVER servername /DECRYPT password /CONFIGFILE "D:Microsoft SQL ServerSSISDeploymentsRateMonitoringImportTasksDeploymentImportRateMonitoringTables_Production.dtsConfig" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING E

and I get

SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x8000FFFF

although the same code executes perfectly from a command prompt.

Please does anyone have any experience with a similar problem and if so, how did you get round it?

Thank you

SQL Server 2014 :: Add A Step To Add To Encrypt Backup

Jul 7, 2015

I have inherited a job that is calling a maintenance plan. The maintenace plan makes a back-up of various databases.I have to add a step to add to encrypt the backup. I have the exe already. Its called "EncryptBackup.exe".My difficulty is I do not know how to add the step to the job exactly. The command syntax eludes me a bit. The syntax for the encrypter exe is:

C:exesEncryptBackup.exe C:DBBackupFolderA Encypt filename.bak

The output is "filename_encrypt.bak". It should be noted that there exists several sub-folder off: C:DBBackup like FolderA, FolderB, etc...each one holds a database.

SQL Server 2014 :: Can Get User Windows Login When Using Server Login Authentication

Apr 26, 2015

Oracle and Teradata are able to capture the windows/client login that connects to their database with a functionnal ID.I've searched around and I don't think MS SQL can do this...I administer SQL 2014 server and also SAS Enterprise guide product. I've created sql server logins for several teams so everyone shares the same sql server login which is used to bind the SAS library to my SQL server database.

However, when looking at activity monitor, I can't drill down to which user is executing a particular query. I only see the SQL login which is share amongs 200 other folks. On the other hand, when they connect from SAS to Oracle or Teradata, I can see the shared login + additionally their windows NT login used to connect to SAS which is awesome....they can't fool me by using a shared/funcionnal ID....i still see who's using that ID...

SQL Server Express Client App Login / Password

Dec 18, 2006

Help!!

I used to have an Access database which had tables for users, roles, actions etc.

This was used by a C++ client app (using ADO) which logged in, got the user ID and password (by raising a login dialog ) and then checked these against a user table and then assigned the roles and possible actions.

Now we have SWL Server Express 2005 - NT Authorisation - how do I get/pass the user ID to the C++ Application so it can get the associated roles? Seems silly to have 2 logins.

Better still can I do away with the App's User table or make its password column invisible to all users bar Admin and the C++ App?

Using 'Alter Login' To Change Password In SQL Server 2005

Sep 26, 2006

Please Help!!

We have an application using SQLOLEDB connection to a SQL Server 2005 database. Per domain policy, the users are required to change their password every 60 days.

The accounts are established to 'Enforce password policy'.

When we try to execute the 'ALTER LOGIN' command to change the password, locks are being established and will not free the account without bouncing the instance.

After issuing the command, any interaction with the server using this UserID results in a "lock request time out" error 1222.

I have tried issuing this command using both the application and through SQLServer Mgmt Studio Express and the results are the same.

Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: User Database Integrity Check Fail

Mar 8, 2015

I've been running the Ola Hallengren maintenance script for the last five months without missing a beat. Today I find an error stating the UserDatabase Integrity check job failed last night. This is running on SQL Server 2014 BI edition w/64 Gigs.

I ran a DBCC CHECKDB on each database manually and all worked until I tried it on the biggest one that is about 18 gbs. It just keeps running and I eventually stopped it so I'm guessing it is memory, but doesn't make sense considering it has 64 gbs. I have it set to 64/4 max / min. Again, this was never an issue until last night.I've been looking up all morning, but not seeing much on this error "The operating system returned error 1453"?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Check If UNC Path Exists (It Is Folder - Not File)

usual way to check if file exists

DECLARE @File_Exists INT
EXEC Master.dbo.xp_fileexist 'serverBSQL_Backupfile.bak', @File_Exists OUT
print @File_Exists
1

And if check folder, can use "nul", but it doesn't work for UNC path

DECLARE @File_Exists INT
EXEC Master.dbo.xp_fileexist 'serverBSQL_Backupul', @File_Exists OUT
print @File_Exists
0

If use xp_subdirs like:

EXEC master.dbo.xp_subdirs 'serverBSQL_Backups'

If the folder doesn't exists, Msg 22006, Level 16, State 1, Line 3 xp_subdirs could not access 'ServerBSQL_Backups*.*': FindFirstFile() returned error 67, 'The network name cannot be found.'

how to check if UNC folder exists in Backup? in my code I want to check if the unc folder exists before doing backup, the unc path is retrieved from other table or backup history.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: SSMS - Disable Check For Memory Optimized Tables?

Oct 2, 2014

I have the following setup:

- An MSSQL 2014 Standard server that houses multiple small databases (in excess of a hundred).
- These databases are frequently dropped and restored by an application that uses this SQL Server.
- There is a business need for this setup at this time, so I can't get away from it. Therefore answers like "don't have so many small databases that are frequently dropped and restored" would be somewhat unuseful

This is the problem I have:

- When I connect SSMS 2014 to the server and expand the "Databases" node, it takes forever to display. In comparison, SSMS 2008 connected to SQL 2008R2 server with the same number of databases displays the Databases tree very quickly.

I ran a trace to see what exactly SSMS 2014 is doing. When the "Databases" node is expanded, it runs a query that checks each database for Memory-Optimized Tables (new and wonderful feature of SQL 2014 for sure, but I'm not using it, at least yet). Naturally, when you have to loop through over a hundred DBs, it takes time. Worse yet, if one of these DBs is in process of being restored, the query sits and waits to time out before proceeding to the next DB. Sometimes this causes outright timeouts. Here is the query:

use [MyDatabase]
SELECT
ISNULL((select top 1 1 from sys.filegroups FG where FG.[type] = 'FX'), 0) AS [HasMemoryOptimizedObjects]

To be sure, this is NOT a SQL Server performance issue. This server processes a rather heavy workload and has been doing so for over a month, and the workload completes within expected time limits or better. Even so I've done some basic performance measuring, and the server itself is quite all right.

Moreover, if I connect SSMS 2008 to it, I get an error message (Index out of bounds or somesuch), but SSMS 2008 does connect, and displays the Databases tree much faster than SSMS 2014.

I'd like to turn off the option to check for Memory Optimized Objects altogether, as I'm not using the feature.
