Move Mdf Files For System Databases To Another Location

Mar 18, 2008

Hello there,
I've been told that it is good practice to keep mdf and ldf files in another location... We have it in place for all our user databases, however mdf and ldf files for our system dbs are still at the same location. I was wondering what is the right way of splitting those should be?

Help!! What Is The Best Way To Move A SQL Server And Its Databases To A New Machine????

Jul 10, 2000

Hello all. I am a baby new database administrator who hasnt finished all the courses yet. I have my Administration exam but not the Implementation yet. I got hired anyways! woo hoo.. Anyways, my question is this. I have a SQL Server 7.0 machine and its databases. I have been asked to move it all over to a new, skookum fast machine with access to 3.6 Terabytes of storage. I have been researching the best way to do this but am not sure. First there is detaching and reattaching the databases. I dont like this one cuz when I have done some practice ones it completely erases the databases of the original machine. The other way I was considering was using DTS. This is easy to use with the DTS wizard but the transaction logs of the databases are not transferred. What would be your advice on this move?? I need to make a this a reasonably seemless move. Help!!

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Move Text Data From Primary To New Filegroup?

Oct 15, 2015

I need to modify a table to reside on a new filegroup and also point TEXTIMAGE_ON to that filegroup instead of PRIMARY. Apparently in the past, the only way to achieve this via SQL is to create a new table, copy over data, drop the old table and rename the new table to the original name. I found this solution in the SQL Server 2005 forum.

Is there any other way to alter this table in order to point the TEXTIMAGE_ON to new filegroup using SQL Server 2014? We are on Standard edition. The technique I am using is the drop constraint (with move option) and add constraint (to new filegroup) commands. The data and indexes move, but not the text data (it still is in primary filegroup).

Transact SQL :: Move Files From One Location To Another Using Powershell

Jul 12, 2015

I have a job which copies .txt files 24 hours 7 days a week to c:TempSource

What I am planning to do is copy the files from one location to another say c:TempTarget

So I have written the Powell shell script and when i put that in the sql agent job i get below error ;

A job step received an error at line 5 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is '$filesToMove = $files | Where -Property "Name" -NotLike -Value $newestFile.Name'. Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error information returned by PowerShell is: 'A parameter cannot be found that matches parameter name 'Property'. '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed.

$sourceFiles = "c:TempSource*.txt"
$targetFolder = "c:TempTarget"
$files = Get-ChildItem $sourceFiles
$newestFile = ($files | sort LastWriteTime -Descending)[0]
$filesToMove = $files | Where -Property "Name" -NotLike -Value $newestFile.Name
$filesToMove | ForEach { Move-Item $_ $targetFolder }

SQL Server 2014 :: Move Data From Database Taking Into Account Identity Keys

Oct 9, 2013

I'm trying to move specific data from three linked tables on a source database to three tables on a destination database by generating dynamic SQL INSERT scripts but am getting stuck on the last set of INSERT statements. I don't think I can use SSIS because the source autonumber fields may already exist on the destination side but I could be wrong.

For simplicity, Table 1 (T1) has one autonumber key of PK1 as well as other fields (A1, B1, etc.).

Table 2 (T2) has one autonumber key of PK2 and a foreign key (FK1) that links back to PK1 as well as other fields (A2, B2, etc.).

Table 3 (T3) has one autonumber key of PK3 and a foreign key (FK2) that links back to PK2 as well as other fields (A3, B3, etc.).

Like this:
T1: PK1, A1, B1, etc.
T2: PK2, FK1, A2, B2, etc.
T3: PK3, FK2, A3, B3, etc.

So, I'm able to query the source database T1 to generate my dynamic SQL INSERT statements that will be run on the destination side. I'm also able to generate my dynamic SQL statements to insert into T2 but when I get to T3 I currently am stuck figuring out how to insert because the destination side is unable to match it's FK2 to the just inserted PK2. It throws the below error.

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Moving Databases From One PC To Another?

Aug 9, 2015

I've got an old version of SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition on an old PC which is failing. I've got a new PC and have put SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition onto it. Now before the old machine completely dies, I've gotten into SSMS on the old machine and did a backup of the databases I want to save. I've moved the .BAK files to where I could get to them from SSMS on the new machine. I've gotten into SSMS and tried to do a restore the database to my new machine. However I'm getting an error that does not make any sense to me.

The database I'm I've backed up is named JobSearch. When I backed it up, that was the only database I had selected. Like I said I copied the .BAK to the new machine. Got into SSMS, told it that I wanted to restore the JobSearch database, telling it where I wanted to put it, and it then immediately fails with a:

"Restore of database 'JobSearch' failed. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Logical file 'VideoLibrary_Data' is not part of the database 'JobSearch'. Use RESTORE FILEISTONLY to list the logical file names."

Well of course VideoLibrary isn't "the logical file". But neither did I select VideoLibrary (which is a database I also want to move, but I'm doing one at a time). So what in heck is going on here? Why is it complaining about a database I haven't even selected to back up? Why, when I check everything on the old machine, it's backing up JobSearch, but on the new machine it sees VideoLibrary?

Databases Location

Sep 21, 2007

Hi all,

Need Some Advice€¦

Current Setup of the Databases:

All €œsystem databases€? + €œreportserver & reportservertempdb€? are on €œ D drive€? --- Raid 1 ( Mirrored) and their location is : D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData

Free Space left on "D" Drive is # 18 Gb.

€œUser Databases€? are on ---- €œE Drive€? --- Raid 5 and their location is E:Datadb

Now , we got new storage device with much larger capacity. So, we are planning to transfer our databases on this new drive which is €œRAID 5€?.

My question is:

(1) Should I transfer all the databases ( (i.e.) €œsystem databases€?+ €œreportserver & ReportServerTempdb€? + €œUser databases€?) on that new drive ( RAID 5).
(OR)

(2) Keep the €œsystem databases€? + €œReportServer& ReportServerTempdb€? on the old
drive (i.e.) RAID 1 and Transfer only the €œUSER Databases€? on that new drive (i.e.) RAID 5.
(OR)

(3) Transter only Tempdb to the new drive (i.e.) on Raid 5, so as to avoid any I/O congestion. and keep all other system & ReportServer & ReportServerTempdb on the old "D"drive.
(OR)

(4) Is there anything I should be careful when doing this & Is there any better way of doing this€¦.

Thanks for all your help€¦.

Unable To Copy App_data Folder Databases On Production Server To A Different Folder Or Location

Sep 19, 2007

I dont alot about sql server 2005(Express edition). For debugging purposes i want to copy  the whole app_data folder(.mdf & .log files) on the production server to another folder on the same machine(or sometimes to a network folder).  So when i copy and try to paste this App_data folder to a new location, i get this error message
"cannot copy ASPNETDB: it is being used by another person or program. close any programs that might be using the file and try again."
After reading the above message, i close visual web developer, stop the website in IIS and stop the SQLExpress service on the server and try again but still get the same message.
So how can i make sure that all the programs accessing these database files are closed such that i'm able able to copy them to a different location.

So we want to take the backup using the script and it has to create sub folder for each database. Also if any of the database fails it should continue with others.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Separate Transaction Log Files For Multiple Databases?

May 15, 2015

We have multiple databases on a single instance in an OLTP environment. I have my data files on a separate SAN LUN from my transaction log files (and a few NDFs split out onto additional LUNs). I was wondering if there is a performance benefit to putting each LDF file on its own LUN? Or at least my few busiest LDFs?

We are currently on 2012, but I'm having to put together specs for a 2014 installation and need to answer this question without having an environment in which I can benchmark different setups. I just want to hear whether or not others have done this (why or why not?).

Move Databases On SQL 2000 Machines

Aug 19, 2006

I need to move our production database to a brand new machine on our LAN.Both machines are running SQL2K. I'd like to place the production databasein a directory on the destination machine with a slightly different pathname than the source SQL server. How can I shrink the transaction log to the minimum size before I try themove? What is the best way to move the database to the new machine? Wehave Veritus Backup Exec.Regards,Charles MacLean
