Making Multiple Queries

Feb 26, 2008

Hi,

I have some questions about making muliple T-SQL queries againt an SQL-server. I retrieve all rows from an SQL-server table called ActivityGroup and add the result to a Radio Button List. Suppose, I also wish to add the total sum of every "ActivityGroup" value to the Radio Button List. I guess this ought to be done using a SELECT COUNT statement and then retrieved using the Executescalar method?

The question is do I need to copy the code for the SELECT ('*) statement and make the neccessary changes for the SELECT COUNT statement and Executescalar method or is there a more simple way? Is it possible to use two command statements in the same code block?

The total sum is going to be calculated using the values from both an SQL-server and an Access database. The OleDb sample below is what I refer to as a code block. I appreciate any help!

string connectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ServetteConnectionString"].ConnectionString;

string sQuery = "SELECT * FROM Aktivitetsgrupper where aktivitetsid = " + Request["AktivitetsId"];

OleDbConnection oOleDbConnection = new OleDbConnection(connectionString);

oOleDbConnection.Open();

OleDbCommand command = new OleDbCommand(sQuery, oOleDbConnection);

OleDbDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader();

int test = 12;

while (reader.Read())

{

rblAktivitetsgrupper.Items.Add(new ListItem(String.Format("{0}, platser", reader["aktivitetsGruppNamn"]), reader["aktivitetsGruppID"].ToString()));

}

Containstable Queries Not Making Sense.

Jan 2, 2008

I have a few questions related to using CONTAINSTABLE in a query that I hope someone can help with.

I am working on a project to add document search capabilities to my companies product using fulltext indexing. Part of this requirement is an ability to breakdown the component parts of of the search query and provide information on *why* documentX ranked higher than documentY.
This is a bit convoluted, but taking this (very simple) example - the user wishes to search for 2 skills - "HTML" and/or "XML".
The generated query looks a little like :-

Select DOC.DOC_ID, RANK1.RANK, RANK2.RANK, RANK3.RANK
from DOCS DOC
inner join CONTAINSTABLE(docs, doc, 'HTML AND XML') as RANK1 on RANK1.DOC_ID=DOC.DOC_ID
inner join CONTAINSTABLE(docs, doc, 'HTML') as RANK2 on RANK2.DOC_ID=DOC.DOC_ID
inner join CONTAINSTABLE(docs, doc, 'XML') as RANK3 on RANK3.DOC_ID=DOC.DOC_ID

This returns the "overall" rank, and a rank for the 2 component parts, so I can say this doc ranked XXX overall because it scored "rank1" for HTML and scored "rank2" for XML etc....

My question on this part is about the values for the "overall rank". If the query contained an OR it always seems to return the highest of the "rankX" values, and if it doesnt, it returns the lowest.
e.g. for the example
for java and word and excel and access - the overall ranking is 2 , java=36, word=2, excel=16 and access=36
for java and word or excel and access - the overall ranking is 16 , java=36, word=2, excel=16 and access=36
for (java and word) or (excel and access) - the overall ranking is 16 , java=36, word=2, excel=16 and access=36

So in the first example, regardless of what the other values are, the rank returned is always 2 (the score for "word"). My resultset has 100ish rows, all with a rank of < 5 for word, but all with ranks of 18-100 for the other 3 values - yet the "overall" rank always matched the "word" rank.....??
This doesnt feel right to me somehow, I would expect a different value as if the document ranked really highly for one value but low for the other, it doesnt feel right the value is clamped to the lowest? Or am I just understanding it wrong?
If I use "freetexttable" the overall rank is a little more meaningful - but unfortunately I also need to use weighting, which brings me to my next question . . .

This question is about rankings returned from the ISABOUT function.
In the following example,
select * from documents as DOC
inner join containstable(docs,doc,'project') as doc0 on DOC.DOC_ID=doc0."key"
inner join containstable(docs,doc,'ISABOUT (project weight (1.0))') as doc1 on DOC.DOC_ID=doc1."key"
inner join containstable(docs,doc,'ISABOUT (project weight (0.5))') as doc2 on DOC.DOC_ID=doc2."key"
inner join containstable(docs,doc,'ISABOUT (project weight (0.1))') as doc3 on DOC.DOC_ID=doc3."key"
inner join containstable(docs,doc,'ISABOUT (project weight (0.0))') as doc4 on DOC.DOC_ID=doc4."key"
order by doc0.rank desc

The values I get from the doc1/2/3/4.RANK columns dont seem right.
In this example,

doc0.rank = 133
doc1.rank = 150
doc2.rank = 330

doc3.rank = 924

doc4.rank = 0

These values dont make any sense to me, as the rank seems to go UP when the documentation on ISABOUT says it goes down (I think it says somewhere the calculated rank is multiplied by the weight?).
Once again, is there something I missed or am I understanding it wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help into understanding the whys of this...

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Making Single Subnet Cluster Multi-subnet

Aug 18, 2015

We have a SQL 2014 AlwaysOn availability group running on two Windows 2012 R2 servers that are in the same subnet. We created a new server in a second subnet, installed SQL, joined the server to the Windows cluster, added a new IP resource for the new cluster, and performed the other remaining steps to add a new AG replica to the SQL instance on this new server. When we try to move the core cluster resources to the new node to test failover, we get an error. Here's the command we've been using:

Move-ClusterGroup "Cluster Group" -Node node3

and it returns the error: The operation failed because either the specified cluster node is not the owner of the group, or the node is not a possible owner of the group...I've checked the ownership of the cluster groups and the cluster resources and it looks like they are set appropriately:

>Get-ClusterGroup | Get-ClusterOwnerNode
Cluster Object Owner Nodes
---------------- ---------------
Available Storage {}
Cluster Group {node1,node2,node3}
SQLAG {node1,node2,node3}

[code]....

We've double-checked that all IP resources are in the right subnets and that the dependencies for the Cluster Name resource and the Listener Name resource are set appropriately. I'm not sure what else to check since the PowerShell commands seem to indicate that node3 is an owner of the appropriate resources. What other things need to be checked or if the ownership being checked isn't the same as what PowerShell is checking?

SQL Server 2014 :: Does Running Multiple Queries In Same SP Cause Latency

May 14, 2014

I have the following:

(a) One Dynamic SQL Query that takes 37 ms when run as a single query or in an SP.

(b) Three SQL Indexed View queries that take 0 ms when run together.

When i add (a) + (b) in the same SP, i should get 37 ms + 0 ms = 37ms, but NO it takes 400 ms.

What is causing the extra 363 ms of latency.

Making A View That Shows The Results Of Several Different Queries.

Dec 21, 2005

Hello,I am trying to create a view that shows the followingField1: Sum of Amounts from Table AField2: Count of Amounts from Table AField3: Sum of of Amounts from Table BField4: Count of Amounts from Table B......Field3: Sum of of Amounts from Table HField4: Count of Amounts from Table H......Things are a bit more complex but this is the gist.I am using SQL 2000.I know how to do this pretty easily using a stored procedure. But howcan I do it in a view? A SQL server won't meet my needs in thissituation.I tried OpenQuery ('myserver', 'exec myprocedure') but get the messagethat my server is not configured for data access. I tried the systemstored procedure to set data access to true but nothing seemed tohappen.I also tried Select * from (Select Statement1, select statement2)but got syntax error at the comma between statement1 and statement2.Trying to use select Statement1 as ABC to does not seem to work either.Is there a way to do what I want without making 15 views and then afinal view that shows them all together? I know I could probably dosomething by creating a ton of functions, but it really seems thisshould not be that hard...I am definitely open to any easy suggestions!Thanks,Ryan

SQL Server 2014 :: How To Systematically Manage Big List Of Queries And Tables

Sep 12, 2015

Suppose someone has to work on a lot of different SQL Server Databases which have got a lot of Tables and Queries / Views inside them.

After a period of time, it becomes very difficult to remember exactly what kind of columns are present within a given Table and View.

Any method by which one can keep a systematic list of all the Tables and Views that are present within a SQL Server Database, along with the columns that are present within them.

Are there any Add-on products or services etc. available in making this type of work systematic?

Currently I add comments to each queries inside SQL Server to remind me of what this query is doing, but this method is not great.

SQL Server 2014 :: Memory-optimized Queries Using Table Scan Instead Of Seek?

Sep 19, 2015

I've been having some trouble getting a single-column "varchar(5)" field to reliably use a table seek instead of a table scan. The production table in this case contains 25 million rows. As impressive as it is to scan 25 million rows in 35 seconds, the query should run much faster.

Here's a partial table description:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Summaries_MO]
(
[SummaryId] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[zipcode] [char](5) COLLATE Latin1_General_100_BIN2 NOT NULL,
[Golf] [bit] NULL,
[Homeowner] [bit] NULL,

[Code] .....

Typically, this table is accessed with a query that includes:

SELECT ...
FROM SummaryTable
WHERE ixZIP IN (SELECT ZipCode FROM @ZipCodesForMO)

This query insists on using a table scan. I've tried WITH (FORCESEEK) for example, but that just makes the query fail.

As I've investigated this issue I also tried:

SELECT * FROM Summaries WHERE ZipCode IN ('xxxxx', 'xxxxx', 'xxxxx')

When I run this query with 64 or fewer (actual, valid) ZIP codes, the query uses a table seek.But when I give it 65 or more ZIP codes it uses a table scan.

To summarize, the production query always uses a table scan, and when I specify 65 or more ZIP codes the query also uses a table scan. I'm wondering if the data type of the indexed column (Latin1_General_100_BIN2) is somehow the problem. I'll likely try converting the ZIP codes to an integer to see what happens.

SQL Server 2014 :: RDP Into Server - Queries Run Slow

I have a remote server with SQL server 2014 instance on it. There is nothing else running on the SQL Server box(dedicated SQL box). There is only one instance of SQL 2014 on the server. No other versions of SQL server are on the server.

Issue:

1. When I execute a query connecting to the SQL server instance through my local SSMS, the query executes in 30 secs.

2. When i connect to remote server through windows RDP session and execute the same query in the SSMS(on server), then query executes in 1 minute.

SQL Server 2014 :: Merge Similar Records From Excel?

May 19, 2015

I am working on a project that will require me to get a flat data file (excel spreadsheet) with hundreds of thousands of records. Each record is an Owner, and specifically what they own. There will be a field for OwnerName that I want to figure out a way to pull the data into a database like;

Table(Owners) - make sure owner is listed only once

Table(Properties) - joined to owners showing all properties that person owns

Now the tricky part, the owner names might not be exactly the same. Some records might have;

Smith, John
John Smith
Smith, John T
etc.

To make matters worse, this will be a continuous process. I will receive updated excel spreadsheets from time to time and will need to import the new records, many times overwriting the old data. For the good news, there should be an OwnerID that will be unique within the excel data. So as I am merging similar records into the Owners table, I should have a list of OwnerID's that can forever be used to link to the owner.

Adhoc DashBoard In SQL Server Reporting Service 2005

Mar 3, 2008

Hi Gurus,
We are planning to user SQL server 2005 reporting services in our project, for this we are doing a Proof of concept exercise to evaluate if SSRS 2005 will be good for our project.
For this we are trying if we can make dashboard or composite reports (combine 4-5 reports to create one report).
Also if we can make this dashboard ad-hoc. As we are already using the Ad-Hoc reporting capability of SSRS 2005 we wanted to check if dashboards can also be created using Ad-hoc reporting feature.

Please let me know if you any information or pointers for this.

Thanks in Advance.

Exporting Ad Hoc Queries To Excel

Feb 19, 2007

Kevin writes "Please forgive me if this is a stupid question. I am working in an environment where we are using SQL Server 2005 and Excel 2003. We have a custom .NET 2005 application which runs against the SQL Server. Users frequently create ad hoc queries in Management Studio to pluck out certain info. They would like to save the results down into an Excel spreadsheet for further analysis; However, we haven't come up with an elegant solution to save these results in Excel and keep the column headings and data types for each column. I have seen transact-sql code to do this in the past using the OPENROWSET command to write to an Excel file; However, I am not confident that this is the best way to skin this particular cat so I thought I would run it by you. So, my question is, What is the BEST way to save ad hoc query results from SQL Server to an Excel spreadsheet so that I preserve the column headings and data type of each column?"

Interactive Dashboard With Subreports

Sep 14, 2007

I am trying to create a dashboard that is split into the five main focus areas of Customer, Finance, Management, People and Innovation. Each focus area has a main report and a series of subreports (within a panel). I use the €˜Jump to report:€™ property at the domain level €“ which works well.

My problems arise when dealing with the subreports. For example, in the €˜People€™ focus area €“ the panel contains 4 subreports covering; contractor vs. fte trends, gender balance trends, compliance trends and investment trends.

Ideally I would like to have four €˜tabs€™ which when clicked would show the relevant subreport. I know this can be done via a full report refresh, but it looks clumsy and is more complex and costly to maintain.

I am happy for any method that might change the €˜Subreport€™ property dynamically or set the visibility of the objects. I want to avoid using the toggle capability as this could result in two or more subreports conflicting and being visible at the same time.

Digital Dashboard Question

Dec 28, 2006

I€™m not sure if this is the right topic for this particular forum but here goes anyway€¦

Okay, admittedly, I am not really familiar with MS SQL Server (I€™m Oracle, actually) but I am investigating a possible implementation on a relatively small scale. I am sure that MS SQL Server will handle all the database functions I need and will leave plenty of room for future growth. That really isn€™t the issue. What I am trying to figure out is how the Digital Dashboard I€™ve read about works. Of particular concern is the apparent connection between the Dashboard and Share Point. My first question is this: Is Share Point required to use the Digital Dashboard?

My next question is actually a bit easier€¦ Is there a sample site I can access that shows some of the capabilities of a Digital Dashboard implementation? I€™d like to make sure that the kinds of displays I am trying to build are actually available using this feature€¦

Thanks in advance for your assistance!
