SQL Server 2014 :: Trigger On A View If Any Insert / Update Occurs On Base Table Level

Apr 21, 2015

I have a situation where I have Table A, Table B.

View C is created by joining table A and table B.

I have written a instead of trigger D on view C.

I do not insert/update/delete on the view directly.

For every insert/update in table A /B the values should get insert/update in the view respectively. This insert/update on view should invoke the trigger.

And I am unable to see this trigger work on the view if any insert/update occurs on base table level.

Trigger is working only if any operation is done directly on the view.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Master Table With Insert Trigger

I have a master table with after insert trigger on it.. When record is inserted into master table, the trigger fires and is captured in the backoffice table. In case the trigger fails, my record is neither in the master table nor in the back office table..

Is there anyway to capture the record either in the master table or in a separate table.

SQL Server 2014 :: Synchronize Table On Remote Server Via Update Trigger Failing

Jul 21, 2015

We have a database on a 2005 box, which we need to keep in sync with one on a 2014 box (until we can turn off the one on 2005). The 2005 database is still being updated with changes that must be applied to the 2014 database, given the nature of the data (medical documents) we need to ensure updates are applied to the 2014 database in very near real time (these changes are - for example - statuses, not the documents themselves).

Cunning plan #1, ulgy - not at all a fan of triggers - but use an after update trigger to run a sp on the remote box via a linked server in this format, with a SQL Server login for the linked server with permissions to EXEC the remote proc.

CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[SourceUpdate] ON [dbo].[SourceTable]
AFTER UPDATE
AS
SET XACT_ABORT ON;
SET NOCOUNT ON;
IF UPDATE(ColumnName)

[Code] ....

However, while the sp can be run against the linked server as a standalone query OK, when running it in a trigger it's throwing

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "WIBBLE" returned message "The transaction manager has disabled its support for remote/network transactions.".

Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Procedure TheAfterUpdateTrigger, Line 19

The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "WIBBLE" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

Whether it actually possible to call a proc on a remote box via a trigger and if so what additional hoops need to be jumped through (like I said, it'll run OK called via SSMS)?

Intead Of Update/insert Trigger On View Question

Dec 22, 2005

Hello all,SQL Server 2000 documentationhttp://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...rt10/c3761.mspxstates that if view is using "NOT NULL" columns of a base table, theninsert/update performed on a view must provide dummy values for thosecolumns, and code of the trigger should ignore them. But I cannot reproduce this restriction. Code below pasted to QueryAnalysershows that I can not supply dummy values for "NOT NULL" fields when I updateview and still have update done. Row-level Security: Permissions Required On Base Table?

Jun 2, 2007

I'm implementing row-level security in a SQL Server database that uses Microsoft Access for the front end. I'm using a UDF (a view behaves the same way) to restrict access to specific rows of a base table based on membership in a role. According to the reading I've done, if the base table has DENY ALL permissions for the role, and the UDF has GRANT ALL, members of the role should be able to update records in the base table via the UDF, without having direct access to the base table. However, I find that unless I grant appropriate permissions on the base table, the user is unable to update the table via the UDF.

Is this expected behavior? Nothing I've read suggests I should have to grant permissions on the columns of the base table.

However it seems as if the Update protion is failingfor some reason. WHat I have tried so far is setting the trigger orderfor the update to run first and vice-versa, but still no luck. Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Insert Trigger To Update Table

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,Does anyone know of a simple way to do this? I want to create aninsert trigger for a table and if the record already exists based onsome criteria, I want to update the table with the values that arepassed in via the insert trigger without having to use all the 'set'statements for each field (so if we add fields in the future I won'thave to update the trigger). In other words, I want the trigger codeto look something like this:if exists (select * from TableA where Fld1 = inserted.Fld1) then//don't do insert, do an update instead (would i want to rollback here?and will I have access to the 'inserted' table still?)Update TableASet TableA.<all the fields> = Inserted.<all the fields>where Fld1 = inserted.Fld1end ifAny help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks,Teresa

I know this is possible in access, so i'm wondering how to go about it in ms-sql?

Instead Of Insert Trigger Failed To Update Secondary Table Through ODBC

Feb 1, 2008

FYI: I'm using SQL2005 on a windows 2003 server.

So, I've written an Instead of Trigger to update a foreign key field based on information in another field of the same record.

To add some error handling to the process I updated the Trigger to insert any records that don't have legitimate foreign keys into a second table.

This process works great when I test it by just adding a record using the table view in the SQL Management Studio or through a query run in the query browser.

However, when a record is added via an ODBC connection I get foreign key constraint errors and records are not added to the second table. If the foreign key is legit the record is added and the part of trigger that updates that keyed field executes just fine.

Is anyone aware of this issue? Is there a way around it?

I found the following MSKB article but I'm not sure if it applies to my situation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304096

Here's my current code, if that track the problem in anyway:

Code:

ALTER TRIGGER UpdateTicketID

Instead of INSERT
AS
IF ((Select charindex('{', [subject]) FROM Inserted) = 0)
BEGIN
INSERT INTO
BadEmail ([Subject], Sender, Body, EntryID, LastModificationTime, AttachmentLInk, SendTo, Cc, ContactID)
Select

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Is It Realistic To Base Recovery On Mdf And Ldf Backups

My recommendation to my manager is to base recovery on .bak and .trn files. However the .mdf and .ldf files can be backed up without being detached and I am wondering about the value of these file backups. He has set up backups to external drive of the .mdf and .ldf but not of the .bak and .trn files that I have set up. His recovery strategy is based on complete backup of the machine and bare metal recovery. I am finding it hard to defend my preference for going about recovery with a new SQL Server installation, then restoring .bak files. Has tried recovery from .mdf and .ldf? Please note that all the database files (system and user) are on a single drive, I think this was set up to allow the machine to be clustered. We are intending to do a test rebuild of the machine from his backups.

Self Join Using Instead Of Update Trigger On A View

Jan 11, 2008

Hello all...I'd appreciate any help on this one.

I created a View...the view looks at four seperate tables.

Next, I created an Instead of Update trigger on that view. It works fine...for a regular UPDATE...SET.

However, it throws an error when I try an update and self join based on that view:

Update T1
Set RateUsed = T1.RateUsed
From Taxroll..Taxroll T1 Join
Taxroll..Taxroll T2 on
T1.Asmt = T2.Asmt and
T1.Taxyear = T2.Taxyear
Where T1.Asmt = '123456789012'
And T1.Taxyear = 2007
And T2.RollChgNum = ''
And T1.RollChgNum Like '%X'
And IsNull(T1.RateUsed,'') > ''

Msg 414, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
UPDATE is not allowed because the statement updates view "Taxroll..Taxroll" which participates in a join and has an INSTEAD OF UPDATE trigger.

There are a few caveats:
First, I thought the join issue was in the view itself. I re-created the view using no joins...all subqueries and still get the error. Second, I re-created the Instead of Update Trigger with no joins, and still get the error.

Thanks!
