For database BANKDB , Log Space used(%) is 48.83% and Log size is about 23438.87 where as my database size of BANKDB is 60 GB. FULL database and Log back is done every day night one time. My database is performing slow now.
Do we need to take log backup frequently like once a 1 hour so that Log space used will be less. Same query is taking more time to execute than before in same database is it because of log file has increased.
I do index organize and rebuild once a week and stats apply nightly.
Is it correct once log space size is increasing more than 10%. Do we need to take log backup?

Sep 13, 2014I've been fixing some issues lately where weekly maintenance has been causing logs to grow and filling disks.
Is there any rule of thumb for allocating log space for doing reorgs and rebuilds in a worst case scenario? I'm thinking 3x the largest database size?
I've been watching them run on databases in the range of 50GB where the logs are growing well over that for rebuilds or even reorgs. Once you have a few databases like this on a server, you can suddenly eat through a lot of disk space just for holding logs during maintenance.

Jul 23, 2014I had to reinstall my local copy of SQL a few weeks ago, which naturally overwrote the
msdb.dbo.sysmanagement_shared_server_groups_internal and
msdb.dbo.sysmanagement_shared_registered_servers_internal tables.
However I still have the local XML file that SSMS reads so I can still access the groups, I just get weird errors when trying to re-register my install as the new CMS. How to rebuilt those tables from the XML file or know of a way to repopulate?

Are there any benchmarks specifically on setting datafile growth so low (on databases 1-100Gb in size)? Are there circumstances in well utilized servers where that might be warranted?

By default, data and log files are initialized by filling the files with zeros when you perform one of the following operations:
Create a database
Add files to an existing database
Increase the size of an existing file
Restore a database or filegroup
Which leads me to believe that expanding the size of a datafile will also wipe out (my definition of 'initialize') any existing data within that file.
I may be misunderstanding 'initialize', because when I tested it out, I found this wasn't the case - my table data written to the file was still there after a resize.
Need to clarify to what degree I'd be taking a risk by increasing the file size on a datafile which already has data in it.

I have a tableA in some DB on transaction server (Enterprise Edition), this table is being replicated in reporting server DB (Standard edition).
When I check the space used by this table in both the databases i see noticeable difference.
I am using EXEC sp_spaceused 'tableA' to determine the space.

Apr 26, 2015We have a database with a table that contains around 180m records. Each day a further 70k are inserted. No records are ever deleted as this table is used for archiving only.Users are required to perform SELECTs on this table constantly but due to the high number of INSERTs the indexes become very fragmented very quickly. My aim is to avoid daily rebuilds of the indexes which is what our software house is telling us we have to do.
This is the DDL for the table:

There are also three clustered Indexes on this table each referencing a single column. The problem from my side is that I cannot understand why the three columns in a primary key would also be configured as non-clustered indexes.My solution would be one of the following:
1. Accept the tables are going to be fragmented and require a daily rebuild (don't like this one!)
2. Partition the table
3. Remove the non-clustered Indexes and let the clustered index for the primary key do the work.

How much of an issue will this cause the Clustered Index as far as page splits? I was thinking Fill Factor of 70%.I would normally just test and still will on Dev box, but my Dev box is much smaller than production as far as power.

When I do a test run of the rebuilds in my test environment it uses 100G of space - which is fine with me.
When I do a rebuild in my High Availability environment - same DB, same script - it eats up over 600G of space and fills the volume.

Aug 27, 2015I want to set up a database role so that users can use sp_readerrorlog through SSMS. It does a check on membership in the securityadmin role.
I have tested it and can see you can grant execute on xp_readerrorlog but the SSMS GUI uses sp_readerrorlog.
I thought I could create a user/certificate and add the signature to sp_readerrorlog but it's not permitted (likely because it's not a normal database object).
So the other solution is to add the users to the securityadmin role but then explicitly deny alter any login (best done with a custom server role in 2012+ but otherwise just manually in 2008). I tested this out and it works, I'm not able to alter any logins or increase my own permissions, I also did a check of what's reported from fn_my_permissions(null, null) and it shows minimal permissions like I'd expect.

for example:

The issue is that you may have only the prod_code or prod_type and null value for the other in table1.
Ideally I want it to check for both then if 1 isn't available then it draws the division of the available. having both or one or the other determines the division it falls under.

Aug 3, 2015I have a query that has a left join with a large partitioned table. The partitioned table has 10s of millions of records, and each partition has about 100,000 records.
The left join is part of an insert that gets a column from the partitioned table, if the column exists. The query contains the partition ID and all other joined columns are part of a non-clustered index.
Through the profiler, I found that there were millions of reads and the execution plan was giving me a table scan on the partitioned table.
I changed the query to do the insert followed by an update with inner join. That did the trick, but it worries me that SQL Server 2014 behaves differently from 2012 or 2008R2, which can make upgrading very time consuming.

It basically generates future days for each dog. So there is a dog table and a day table with every day.
These 2 table cross join and then fill in missing rows. As time moves i will fill in further future dates but will need the initial insert to be a reasonable query.
All columns are covered by index's but the queries at the end take quite a long time. I would hope for index scan to just point out the missing rows especially on the final query.
How to make the last query as fast as possible.

Reclaim Unused Space / Rebuild Table
Dec 30, 2014best method to my issue regarding unused space. SQL SERVER 2014 BI EDITTION..I have a table that showed 62% Data, 7% unallocated, and 29% unused space.I ran the ALTER TABLE <table name> REBUILD, which changed it to 32% data and 67% unused.What I do with this table monthly and what I believe is causing this unused space issue is this:Every 1st of the month I get a csv file that holds around 3.2 million rows/15 columns of data. About 3 gbs every time.It's 13 months of data. I remove the last 12 months from the current table and import the new 13 month data.I do this twice a month and have no choice because the data is constantly updated and why we get it twice a month.So I am deleting around 6 gbs of data a month as well as adding around 6 gbs of data a month.
I believe this is why I end up with so much unused space, but just found the REBUILD command, which worked but now a small hit on performance and have too much space in the current table. I have read several times that shrinking the file is no good, but what other way to get rid of the extra space in this table? Also, the table doesn't have any indexes or primary key because of duplicates.
