SQL Server Admin 2014 :: CLUSDB Files Missing - Cluster Service Not Coming Up
Oct 9, 2015
I have configured windows failover clustering 2012 on 4 of my test nodes.
I am trying to add another node into this cluster but its not happening. I am not even able to start the cluster service in services.msc
After installing windows failover clustering, when I go to the C:WindowsCluster folder, I am unable to find CLUSDB, CLUSDB.1.container, CLUSDB.2.container and CLUSDB.blf files in the folder.
These files are very much present on the other nodes where cluster service is running.
I tried copying these files manually to server where its missing but still no luck.

I have a 3-nodes AlwaysOn cluster (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 + SQL Server 2012 RTM), Node Majority quorum, the quorum vote for each node is 1.
Today the AlwaysOn AG was suddenly down due to the cluster service on node 1 stopped and can't be started.
The error in eventlog is -
The cluster database could not be loaded. The file may be missing or corrupt. Automatic repair might be attempted.
The Cluster Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The failover cluster database could not be unloaded. If restarting the cluster service does not fix the problem, please restart the machine.
The Cluster Service service terminated with service-specific error The system cannot find the file specified..
The error log in cluster log is -
0000156c.000008f8::2012/09/05-08:09:36.057 INFO [DM] Key RegistryMachineCluster.restored does not appear to be loaded (status STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND(c0000034))
0000156c.000008f8::2012/09/05-08:09:36.057 WARN [DM] Node 1: Failed to unload restored hive from the registry with error STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER(c000000d)

0000156c.000008f8::2012/09/05-08:09:36.057 ERR [DM] Node 1: failed to unload cluster hive, error 2.
Now the cluster service can't be started on node 1, error code 2. Looks like the clusdb in C:windowscluster is missing or corrupted. How to restore the clusdb file? And how to prevent this happen again?
All nodes were well patched, AlwaysOn and cluster related hotfixes were all installed. [URL] .... doesn't wok.

I want to use service SIDs for my SQL Service accounts but also want to have the data files on a NetApp filer CIFS share. The 2014 installer prevents installation if CIFS and Service SIDs are used. I tried to install with domain account on CIFS, and then to swap back to Service SIDs afterwards, but couldn't find a way to do it.
I granted the AD Computer account Full Control to the CIFS share, so it should work, but I just can't work it out at the moment.

I proposed on a new server that we separate Data Files, Log Files, tempDB, Backups, etc. onto separate LUNS on a SAN with High Speed Solid State Drives.I was told that with the new technology with solid state SAN's that it would decrease performance and that it did not work the same way as it did when you had RAID 5's etc.I thought that if things were cared out correctly by a SAN Administrator they would know how to configure for optimal performance.

I got 5 SQL Servers 2008R2 (2x CPUs with 96-384Gb of RAM) with total 1500DBs and around 10Tb of allocated data. Now
I am forced to upgrade to 2012 and 2014, but the old hardware is overkill.
Is it possible to consolidate this to a large SQL AlwaysOn cluster?
We pros/cons could it be to have 2 or 4 nodes?
2 or 4 sockets servers?
My goal was to use ~20 cores Enterprise license on active server.

Dead lock is coming in select query in application because of index. It is identified after enabling trace in database and identified by reading deadlock xml file. After index removal, deadlock is not coming in same query. But it is affecting query's performance slightly. Is it correct way to remove index if dead lock is coming because of index?

I have installed 2 node windows Fail-over clusters successfully. But QUARUM Configuration is not appearing in Failover cluster manager instead "Witness: Disk (Disk Cluster 4)". I have also configured quarum configuration from Quarum "Configure Cluster QUARUM Settings". I have attached the snapshots of windows cluster configuration. Is it the issue or not. I have not got any warning and error during cluster validation while installing Windows failover cluster. I am assuming it is okay and i can move ahead to installation of SQL Failover cluster setup.
Products used for installation in Virtual Machine:
Windows Server 2012 R2
SQL Server 2012 R2
Note: Service Pack is not installed.

We had a big issue today during maintenance work in our SQL environment.
So our environment:
- 2x SQL Server 2014 Enterprise on Windows Server 2012 R2 (SRV1 and SRV2)
-- Both Hyper-V VMs on different Hosts
-- Both configured to an Windows Failover Cluster and AlwaysOn Availability Group (AG1)
-- AG Listener: AG1_lis
-- No shared storage (each Hyper-V Host has its own local storage)
-- Asynchronous Mode
-- SRV1 is primary, SRV2 is secondary SQL node
What happened?
- Shutting down Windows on SRV2 due hardware maintenance
- Cluster goes offline, AG1 goes offline
-- Error message: "Stopped listening on virtual network name 'AG1_lis'."
-- Error message: "The availability group database "DatabaseXY" is changing roles from "PRIMARY" to "RESOLVING" because the mirroring session or availability group failed over due to role synchronization."
Results?
- AG1_lis wasn't available for our applications and they stopped working properly because database connection was lost!
I think, I HOPE, this is not the normale behaviour when one node is shutting down (especially the secondary node!)

We have a SQL 2014 active passive cluster with 5 instances. When the cluster was installed one of the nodes was a virtual machine. As we started to have problems and this is not a Microsoft supported configuration we decided to replace the virtual node with a phyiscal one. On 3 of these 5 instances we configured static ports (1433 TCP) this was required for applications and firewall implementation.
Now with the physical node joined to the cluster we have issues with these three instances. Whenever one of these instances is moved to the passive node the server authentication is changed from mixed to windows only. I'm no SQL expert at all but to me it looks like the configuration of the instances are not replicated to the passive node? I found some similar problems on the net but these are mostly under sql 2008.

I'm trying to do an unattended upgrade of 2014 RTM to 2014 SP1.
It's my first attempt at an upgrade configuration file, and its failing with missing registry entry for database engine service and replication service.
Error in summary.txt is:
The registry key SOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER2495Setup is missing
That's a valid error, as the registry only has an entry for:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL12.MSSQLSERVERSetup
Am I missing something obvious here, or how can this be resolved?

Due to a SQL 2014 cluster installation failure related to security while setting up the primary node, I had to remove the node and any related installation programs from the node and redo the installation again. However I am unable to use the machine name as the SQL network name during the instance configuration, I get the following:
Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.InputSettingValidationException: The SQL Server failover cluster instance name "MachineName" already exists as a server on the network. Specify a different failover cluster instance name.I am still getting the same name since the node name "MachineName" is listed under the cluster name. I have used machine name as SQL network name without an issue. I do not have any existing SQL machine name in network using same machinename which I want to use for this installation.

100.20.200.200
100.20.200.201
When I am trying to introduce another node into the cluster which has IP address like 100.10.101.102, I am getting an error that the server isn't reachable.

Until yesterday I had a server running SQL Server 2008 R2 - with all the SQL Server DB files on an attached disk array.
The server died - so I attached the disk array to a new server - and all the DB data files are visible there.
I installed SQL Server 2014 on the new server and am trying to work out how to point it at the existing database files.
I also have backups of the DB's - but they will take ages to copy over and restore - so it would be much easier to just use the db files. Should I restore the master db first (easy as its small)?

I have the following SQL FCI configuration:
NODE1 -256GB
INST1 - 64GB min/64GB max
INST2 - 64GB min/64GB max
NODE2 - 256GB
INST3- 64GB min/64GB max
INST4- 64GB min/64GB max
With this configuration and if all instances are running on the same node there will be enough memory for them to run. Knowing that normally i ll have only 2 instances in each node wouldnt it be better the following config?
NODE1 -256GB
INST1 - 64GB min/128GB max
INST2 - 64GB min/128GB max
NODE2 - 256GB
INST3- 64GB min/128GB max
INST4- 64GB min/128GB max
With this configuration and in case all the instances (due to a failure) start running on only 1 node, SQL will adjust all instances to just use Min memory specified?

What is the best method to restore a DBTest1 (with one .mdf and one .ldf) into DBTest2 (with one .mdf, multiple .ndf data files and with 4 filegroups associated with specific data files). I do not see how the one .mdf file (in DBTest1) can be separated into the other 4 filegroups (in DBTest2). This does not sounds like it is possible with Backup DBTest1/Restore to DBTEST2 or (Detach/Attach) because the underlying filegroup and file structure is different.
What method should be used to get the data and structure from DBTest1 (includes 1100 Tables and 550 GBs of Data) into DBTest2 (with 4 filegroups)? Is the following possible:
1) First, in DBTest2, execute a script to create tables/indexes on appropriate filegroups.
2) In DBTest2, use scripts to pull data from DBTest1 into DBTest2, for example INSERT INTO DBTest2.dbo.tables with SELECT FROM DBTest1.dbo.tables OR use SELECT/INTO DBTest2.dbo.tables FROM DBTest1.dbo.tables.
Or, is it possible to use the BULK INSERT or BULK COPY Options? Export/Import Wizard?
Does the Create Index step needs to be done after the data is loaded into DBTest2?

Database File Placement Layout? We are planning to implement a new SQL Server 2014 OLTP Database with a 1 TB Data file and 1 TB Log File. I am looking at the possible layout of the database files and trying to determine the best possible configuration. My knowledge/research tells me that items which need separate storage due to constant simultaneous access are:
Data files – should go on the fastest reading storage.
Log files – should go on the fastest writing storage.
TempDb – involves a lot of writing at the same time the data files are being read.
Indexes - (including full text indexes) - involves a lot of writing at the same time the data files are being read.
Also, are there any benefit to having multiple OLTP Database Log files? Because SQL Server writes to the log file sequentially, I do not see any advantages to having multiple database log files. In a SQL Server 2012 Class I took last summer, under “Determining File Placement and Number of Files”, it states “Use a single log file in most situations as log files are written sequentially.”

We have multiple databases on a single instance in an OLTP environment. I have my data files on a separate SAN LUN from my transaction log files (and a few NDFs split out onto additional LUNs). I was wondering if there is a performance benefit to putting each LDF file on its own LUN? Or at least my few busiest LDFs?
We are currently on 2012, but I'm having to put together specs for a 2014 installation and need to answer this question without having an environment in which I can benchmark different setups. I just want to hear whether or not others have done this (why or why not?).

If you were to do a fresh install it would set permissions on the disk so everything just works.
Now when changing the service account (e.g. to a domain user) use the configuration manager, does it do the same magic (possibly sans if the database data/log files are on another disk)? Or do you need to trawl through the dozens of folders and assign rights manually?

I've been trying to get a definitive answer to this question but alas I have conflicting and patchy answers so far from other sources. I have an index that, lets say, requires 10GB of data space to rebuild..This index resides on a filegroup that spans 2 files on two seperate drives (i.e. a mdf and ndf)
When I rebuild this index how will each of these datafiles grow as the rebuild proceeds to completion? Lets for the time being remove the caveats of any other activity hitting the example index/database in question. My tests seem to show that only the mdf will grows (or the file with the lowest id in the that filegroup) provided there is enough space available in that particular file to complete the operation. The secondary ndf dat file doesnt grow at all if the mdf has enough space.
Is expected behavior? i.e. the index will be rebuilt in a contiguous manner relative to the files contained with the filegroup i.e. fileid 1 will grow till limit reached then next fileid grows etc?

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 2 node cluster with SQL Server 2014 FCI installed. Data files are on a separate Windows Server 2012 R2 file server. Data files share has been permissioned to the SQL Server service and SQL Server Agent service accounts as Full Control. NTFS Permissions are Full Control.
When I try to attach a database
CREATE DATABASE AdventureWorksDW2012
ON (FILENAME = 'apricotmssql_VIOLETMSSQL12.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATAAdventureWorksDW2012_Data.mdf')
FOR ATTACHI get this error:
Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 4
Unable to open the physical file "apricotmssql_VIOLETMSSQL12.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATAAdventureWorksDW2012_Data.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".
If I log into the file server (called APRICOT) and look at the NTFS permissions they all look good. I have also reapplied the NTFS permissions from the root folder down.
EDIT
If I log on to one of the nodes in the cluster as the SQL Server service account and navigate to apricotmssql_VIOLETMSSQL12.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATA and copy and paste the data file, it works fine.
EDIT2:
If I log on to the file server and Enable Inheritance at the root level, then Replace all child objects with inheritable permission entries from this object, I get this error:
User Account Control settings on all nodes and the file server are set to Never notify
