SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Difference In Performance Counter Names In Dmv And Alert Creation Screen
Feb 13, 2015
SQL Server 2014 BI edition.
select * from sys.dm_os_performance_counters returns the object names prefixed with "SQLServer:" (e.g. SQLServer:Databases)
It was expected as in other editions also. Issue is that when we try to crate "SQLServer Performance Condition alert", object names in "Object" list comes without the prefix "SQLServer:" (e.g. Databases). Please see the attached snapshots.

Same SQL Server DB engine (2012), connected with two different clients (2008 and 2012). When I check objects for performance condition alert, 2008 client shows the objects name with leading "SQL Server".But 2012 client displays just the object name and NOT prefixed with "SQL Server".we have automated alerts creation, so it fails depends on the client version.

We are trying to create some alerts in our SQL Server 2014 BI edition.Issue is that, after I chose "Type" as "SQL Server performance condition alert" nothing is listed in the "Object" list box.SQL Server event alerts are working. Issue is only with "SQL Server performance condition alert".

I am having an issue in determining the correct size of a table.
I have a tableA in some DB on transaction server (Enterprise Edition), this table is being replicated in reporting server DB (Standard edition).
When I check the space used by this table in both the databases i see noticeable difference.
I am using EXEC sp_spaceused 'tableA' to determine the space.
Transaction Server
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
name rows reserveddata index_size unused
TableA1439999 695416 KB507048 KB182912 KB 5456 KB
Reporting Server
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
name rows reserveddata index_size unused
TableA1439999 656904 KB483664 KB172680 KB 560 KB
So I wanted to know what could be the possible reasons for this difference ?

I have an Alwayson group with 2 Nodes. The SQL Performance counters are always showing on the secondary, but the primary is inconsistent.
I loaded the counters on the primary (unlodctr and lodctr ), restarted the SQL service, and confirmed that the counters were there. 2 days later the counters were gone again. I loaded them again. A week later we had maintenance, failed over to the secondary, and when we failed back to the primary - the counters were gone again….

I set up the collector, and specify the Run As as my AD account in the Collector Set - Properties - General screen. My AD account is the local admin of the remote server.
However, the collector does not seem to work. Although the collecting set is shown as running, the The blg file stays at 64K. If I open it, there is nothing inside (no counter at the bottom). What did I miss?

I want to set up a database role so that users can use sp_readerrorlog through SSMS. It does a check on membership in the securityadmin role.
I have tested it and can see you can grant execute on xp_readerrorlog but the SSMS GUI uses sp_readerrorlog.
I thought I could create a user/certificate and add the signature to sp_readerrorlog but it's not permitted (likely because it's not a normal database object).
So the other solution is to add the users to the securityadmin role but then explicitly deny alter any login (best done with a custom server role in 2012+ but otherwise just manually in 2008). I tested this out and it works, I'm not able to alter any logins or increase my own permissions, I also did a check of what's reported from fn_my_permissions(null, null) and it shows minimal permissions like I'd expect.

2013-12-09 09:04:00.000 1 1 7
2013-12-09 09:05:00.000 2 3 2
My requirement is to get the output in the following format if i take the time with 2 minutes difference
DateField ------------------ Sum-CNT-1 Sum-CNT-2 Sum-CNT-3
09:00:00.000 - 09:02:00.000 12 10 6
09:02:00.000 - 09:04:00.000 3 6 9
Is there anyway i can write down a query to get the sum of the counter with 2 minutes difference. I may take time slot between 9 AM to 10 AM so i should get the sum of the counter with 2 minutes gap in a single query.

I'm pretty new to MSSQL. We have SQL 2K and I was wondering if anyone has seen this issue before.
When I create/modify an Alert there is no option for "SQL Server Performance Condition Alert" in the Type under General tab.
Has anyone seen this before? What can I do to get this type of Alerts?
Just a note -- on my other SQL servers they have the options.
thanks in advance !

I'm trying to create an SSIS package that will do a straight data copy between databases. The problem is that the underlying schema of the origin may change and the requirement is that the transfer be table driven. i.e. the tables that are copied are listed in a table and there should be no human intervention when the schema changes.
I'm moving data between SQL Server and SQL Azure, so backup and restore doesn't work. Has to be an SSIS package.
What's the best way to deal with a changing schema in an SSIS package? Can I delete and rewrite the underlying XML for any tables that change? Do I need to do it programmatically with C#? Do I need to create the package from scratch each time?

I'm a local admin on a SQL Server with dba permissions. I can view that SQL Server in System Monitor and I can create a performance log counter. When I try to start the counter, I get an error: ---------------------------
Performance Logs and Alerts
---------------------------
The SQLSever log or alert has not started. Refresh the log or alert list to view current status, or see the application event log for any errors. Some logs and alerts might require a few minutes to start, especially if they include many counters.
---------------------------
OK

Does anyone have ideas why this isn't working?

I am trying to write a query to calculate the running difference between data on different dates. Below is what my table of data looks like. Basically I want to calculate the difference between the total_completed for each state and date.
DateStatesTotal_Completed
08/27/15CA 19,952
09/11/15CA 26,336
10/02/15CA 35,444
10/08/15CA 38,278
08/27/15CO2797
09/11/15CO3264
10/02/15CO4270
10/08/15CO4297
below is what I am trying to achieve:
DateStatesTotal_CompletedCompleted_Difference
08/27/15CA 19,952 0
09/11/15CA 26,336 6,384
10/02/15CA 35,444 9,108
10/08/15CA 38,278 2,834
08/27/15CO27970
09/11/15CO3264467
10/02/15CO42701,006
10/08/15CO429727
below is my code (I almost have what I need) I just can't figure out how show 0 as the completed_difference for the first Date for each state since there is no prior date to calculate against.
MRR_TOTALS_WEEK_OVER_WEEK AS
(
SELECT
T1.[Date]
,T1.States
,T2.Total_Completed
,ROW_NUMBER() OVER(PARTITION BY T1.States ORDER BY T1.States,T1.[Date]) AS ORDERING
FROM TOTAL_CHARTS T1
LEFT JOIN TOTAL_COMPLETED T2 ON T1.[Date] = T2.[Date] AND T1.States = T2.States
)

What exactly does the DatabasesTransactions/sec measure? The explain button says: "Number of transactions started for the database." Does this mean the number of transactions initiated during the time period or is it some kind of average of the number in progress.
The reason I am asking is that sometimes I see a spike in Transactions/sec. lasting about a half hour concurrent with high memory and CPU usage. Does this really mean that too many transactions are being started or is it a side effect of the machine being too busy to complete transactions thus leaving them pile up uncompleted.
It seems like it should be counting the number of BEGIN TRANSACTIONs statements (plus implicit ones) actually received during the time period, but I'm not having an easy time diagnosing this problem so I am trying to figure out what to rule out.

I want to use BCP to load data from a text file.
By default, constraints are turned off in bcp, so I use the CHECK_CONSTRAINTS hint.
bcp aborts if ANY of the rows contains a FK violation. No data get loaded.
So if I add the -b 1 batch size option, it loads all data UNTIL the first FK violation, but nothing after that.
I want to load EVERYTHING ... except for the violations. But bcp won't let me. Is there a way?

Is it better to run the profiler or performan counter?
What are the filters we have to select in the profiler to monitor the Sql server
