SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Move Text Data From Primary To New Filegroup?

Oct 15, 2015

I need to modify a table to reside on a new filegroup and also point TEXTIMAGE_ON to that filegroup instead of PRIMARY. Apparently in the past, the only way to achieve this via SQL is to create a new table, copy over data, drop the old table and rename the new table to the original name. I found this solution in the SQL Server 2005 forum.

Is there any other way to alter this table in order to point the TEXTIMAGE_ON to new filegroup using SQL Server 2014? We are on Standard edition. The technique I am using is the drop constraint (with move option) and add constraint (to new filegroup) commands. The data and indexes move, but not the text data (it still is in primary filegroup).

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Primary Filegroup For System Objects / Secondary For Data

I have been creating databases in SQL 2008 with a primary filegroup for the system objects and a secondary, marked Default, for the data.

We are preparing a migration to SQL 2014, and the administrator is complaining he won't adopt this structure on the new servers because 'there is no benefit' and 'a backup cannot be restored (!?)'.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: How Data Writes In Multiple Secondary Files If There Is No Filegroup Created

Nov 12, 2014

I read , When sql server Database having multiple data files within single filegroup then sql server writes data in multiple proportional file algorithm where the amount of data written to a file is proportionate to the amount of free space in that file, compared to other files in the filegroup.

so if there is no filegroups created and multiple secondary files are attached in databse , is there same way data stored and writes data in multiple files by the same algorithm or any different way.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Filegroup By Table Category

Oct 14, 2015

I'm being asked to create multiple filegroups for a new database based on the table type, transaction, lookup, misc... From what i'm reading this doesn't make sense. I'm reading either large tables get file groups, nonclustered indexes when they are about the same size of the data, or a few other reasons...

First of all, we are talking about the same disk (please don't ask me about how it is configured) and I'm not sure yet if restoring separate file groups is even going to be necessary.

So here are my questions (beyond, the test and see what happens) because in the end I'm going to probably have to do what i'm told. So this is for my professional knowledge.

1. Does file groups separated by table type make sense?
2. Should you put tables that are queried often together in the same or different file groups.
3. I'm pretty sure you can't restore single file group for write access, am I correct?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Re-balancing Blob And Lob Data In Multiple Files On Primary File Group

May 7, 2014

A little background on what I am trying to achieve first. We are moving to Azure virtual machines and we will have 8 disks on the SQL Server box. I am adding more files to the primary file group and each file will go on its own drive. I am then rebalancing data across these files by rebuilding all of the indexes on the tables which is working fine. No problems so far all is good.

I now have an additional problem. If there is a lob or blob column on the table, rebuilding the clustered index and all the non clustered indexes doesn't rebalance the blob or lob data across the disks such as it does with in row data.

I cannot find any articles on rebalancing lob or blob data because all the articles say to move to a new file group. I do not want a new file group, I just want to use the primary file group where the data already resides, and just redistribute it evenly in the same way that I can in row data which is working fine.

One solution I thought about was to BCP data out of the table, truncate the table and then BCP back into the table which I imagine would have the desired effect of distributing the data evenly over the files.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Read Only DNS Listener Failover Automation From Primary To Secondary

Now, everytime whenerver the roles switch over one has to manually move this resource from the previous secondary node to the new secondary node. This is tedious, and should not be done manually either, so I am looking for a way to automate it so that as soon as the role switches over, the resource group after some time should also switch over to the current secondary.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Disconnected From Listener In Availability Group (When Primary Failed)

Jun 27, 2015

I setup an availability Group. (Only 2 servers - Primary And secondary) -- 21 , 22

I also define an listener . IP .. 23

1- In First step I connected To Listener (23) And in a while I inserted A record to a table .

While 1=1
insert into Tbl_T1(f1,f2) Values (1,2)

2- in second, I Stop the primary .

- I expected this while whitout disconnect, continue.

3- The while code stopped whit this message :

Msg 64, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)

4- I execute again the script, And it worked in new primary.

My questions :

1- is the listener disconnected between switched primary and secondary ? OR have we data loss between switching?

2- I did some huge update on Primary that fill the Log fiel space. And in last Update I got this error :

Msg 9002, Level 17, State 2, Line 27

The transaction log for database 'Your_DB' is full due to 'LOG_BACKUP'.

Is this (Fill All space) a reason to switch primary? Or not ?

New To Sql, Don't Understand Text Filegroup PRIMARY

Sep 28, 2006

Thanks for any help in advance.

I'm new to MS SQL and I'm having trouble adding a table with the property, "Text filegroup" = PRIMARY.
Frankly, I haven't done much reading (I've done lots of googling though, but to no avail) about the subject, but nevertheless it seems that I can't add data to my table unless the 'text filegroup' is set to PRIMARY. However, I can't figure how to set it to primary. Even when I create a new table the default (I think?) seems to not set it to PRIMARY.

By the way, I'm using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Full Text Search Not Returning Certain Results?

Oct 28, 2015

We are running SQL 2014 SP1. We are using defined Full text indexes on several tables in the database. However, on one specific set of servers, a certain search will not return any data. This exact same search works on another set of servers built identically. The first responses I'm sure will be stop list, but I have dropped and recreated the FTI multiple times with different stop lists or no stop list at all and get the same results.

The specific word being searched on is YUM. If I change the value to YUMk, it actually returns, and if I change the data to TUM it returns, but YUM does not. This exact query is working on multiple other systems, so it seems to be something environmental, but I haven't been able to pinpoint it.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: SPID Causing Locks With No Query Text Shown

, req.session_id
, req.status
, req.command

I spoke to the user causing the lock and he ran into a visual basic error when this occurred and didn't close out that window. So my guess is that it's due to an uncommitted transaction. However, shouldn't I still see something if that was the case?

Move Data Between Datafile In Same Filegroup

Jan 28, 2008

Hi all

I've found this problem working with a VLDB, six month ago when I install the DBMS (Win2k3 x64+sp2, SQL 2k5 x64 +sp2, 4 dual core processor and 12 GbRAM) I've got 10 disk (actually ten LUN from a Storage Area Network), each 50Gb.
I've put TempDB and Transaction Log on two separate 50 Gb disk and put the database on 8 different data file on the 8 disk; I've created each datafile with a size of 50 Gb (autogrowth disable), so my DB has 400Gb space in it's datafile.
After a while the datafile began to fill and we decide to add a couple more 50Gb disk where I decide to put to new datafile; now my db is around 430 Gb and I've got this strange situation:

The first 8 datafile now are almost full of data, and obviously they can't growth since they already occupy the whole disk.

The two additional datafile are relatively empty (about 15 Gb each).

As far as I understand now each time that SQL should write to the databse it writes only on the 2 new datafile, and I fear that this can affect performance.
I'd like to reorganize the space in order to have 10 datafile, each with 43Gb of data, but I didn't find any instruction/tool able to move data between datafile.

Anyone has any hint ?

Thank you in advance for any suggestion
Stefano

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Change Data Capture(CDC) For Data Warehouse / Reporting?

Aug 12, 2015

I have a requirement to implement CDC for 50+ tables to implement incremental data changes warehouse/reporting rather than exporting the whole table data. The largest table is having more than half a billion records.

The warehouse use a daily copy of OLTP db (daily DB refresh). How can I accomplish this. Is there a downside in implementing CDC just for the sake of taking incremental changes on the tables?

Is there any performance impact if we enable CDC on OLTP db?

Can we make use of the CDC tables on the environment we do daily db refresh so that the queries don't hit OLTP database?

What is the best way to implement CDC to take incremental changes for reporting.

SQL Server 2014 :: Move Data From Database Taking Into Account Identity Keys

Oct 9, 2013

I'm trying to move specific data from three linked tables on a source database to three tables on a destination database by generating dynamic SQL INSERT scripts but am getting stuck on the last set of INSERT statements. I don't think I can use SSIS because the source autonumber fields may already exist on the destination side but I could be wrong.

For simplicity, Table 1 (T1) has one autonumber key of PK1 as well as other fields (A1, B1, etc.).

Table 2 (T2) has one autonumber key of PK2 and a foreign key (FK1) that links back to PK1 as well as other fields (A2, B2, etc.).

Table 3 (T3) has one autonumber key of PK3 and a foreign key (FK2) that links back to PK2 as well as other fields (A3, B3, etc.).

Like this:
T1: PK1, A1, B1, etc.
T2: PK2, FK1, A2, B2, etc.
T3: PK3, FK2, A3, B3, etc.

So, I'm able to query the source database T1 to generate my dynamic SQL INSERT statements that will be run on the destination side. I'm also able to generate my dynamic SQL statements to insert into T2 but when I get to T3 I currently am stuck figuring out how to insert because the destination side is unable to match it's FK2 to the just inserted PK2. It throws the below error.

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

Order Of Data Load And Index Creation / Move Indexes To Separate Filegroup?

Apr 15, 2015

We are running SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition (64-Bit) on Windows 2012 R2 Standard (64-Bit).

1. When to create indexes, before or after data is added? Please address Clustered and Non-Clustered Indexes.

2. To move indexes to it's own filegroup, is it best to create the NON-Clustered Indexes on the separate filegroup with code similar to the example below?

CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_Employee_OrganizationLevel_OrganizationNode
ON HumanResources.Employee (OrganizationLevel, OrganizationNode)
WITH (DROP_EXISTING = ON)
ON TransactionsFG1;
GO

I have read the following links that states that if you create the Clustered Index on a separate filegroup, it would also move the base table to that particular filegroup. (So I take it that you ONLY can move NON-CLustered Indexes to a separate filegroup.)

Placing Indexes on Filegroups:

[URL]

By default, indexes are stored in the same filegroup as the base table on which the index is created. A nonpartitioned clustered index and the base table always reside in the same filegroup. However, you can do the following:

• Create nonclustered indexes on a filegroup other than the filegroup of the base table.

Move an Existing Index to a Different Filegroup:

[URL]

Limitations and Restrictions

• If a table has a clustered index, moving the clustered index to a new filegroup moves the table to that filegroup.

• You cannot move indexes created using a UNIQUE or PRIMARY KEY constraint using Management Studio. To move these indexes use the CREATE INDEX statement with the (DROP_EXISTING=ON) option in Transact-SQL.
