SQL Server Backup File Format

The IT shop I work in installed MS-SQL Server last week for the sole
purpose of converting a large MS-SQL Server database to a format that
Informix (our main database engine) can read. MSSQL Server installed
perfectly, I can view/manipulate the little "Northwind" sample
database, back it up to a file, restore it (Microsoft Tape Format) just
fine. But... The MSSQL Server "backup" file they sent me that I need
to restore is in a format that I'm unfamiliar with. It is a large
*.sqb file and when I try to restore (using Enterprise Manager - Right
click on "empty" database, choose All Tasks, Restore Database - From
Device, Point to File - I get the message: File is not a valid
Microsoft Tape Format backup set.
Looking at my little Northwind backup file in a hex editor I see the
characters "TAPE" as the first 4 characters of the file. Looking at
the file that I'm unsuccessfully trying to restore in a hex editor I
see "SSBE". It's not in the standard "Microsoft Tape Format"
apparently, but does anyone have any clue what might have created this
backup file? I hope it's not some weird proprietary program! Any
help appreciated, thanks...

Hi All,
I am stuck at one place, where I have to convert CSV format file data into SAP IDOC format file. In SSIS we don't have any such SAP adapter (though we have .NET Data Provider for mySAP suite [SSIS SAP Adapter] but this is still not fully supported by Microsoft, plus it doesn't have feature to convert data into IDOC format) that can do this. Can someone here please provide me some pointers on any third party adapters available in market to do this job or if anyone has already developed some custom approach to achieve this task?

Hi All,
Is there any way that we import EBCDIC data directly to MSSQL? Don€™t find any option with BCP or DTS to do the same. EBCIDIC file format control file for oracle is well defined and works for ORACLE bulk loader.

i have 12 different sql server tables. all are binded to one gridview. i have kept one admin user to view the details of the 12 tables in a gridview (pagesize=5). now the admin wants to generate 12 CSV files from the 12 tables (that is, he has to choose the table name from a dropdown and then has to click "Generate" button. CSV file name should be like this "<table_name>_<date>" ). also want to put links(dynamically [after generation of those csv files]) in a separate page to download those csv files. how to do this in asp.net (C#)? its urgent.

We have one table where we store all documents in one of the column called "Doc" with varbinary(max) data type.
We want to download those documents from sql table to windows explorer and i wrote BCP in sql 2005. And things were fine.
The format file I used there looks like this,

1 SQLBINARY 0 0 "" 1 Doc ""
Now we are in 2014 and when I try the same code with same format file, it hangs in the middle. So I changed the file to 12.0 instead of 9.0 but still not working.

I have to perform a bulk Import on a regular Basis and have created a script to do this. The Problem is that the .csv file has 12 Columns and the table to Import into has 14. To Workaround this discrepancy I have decided to use a Format file. The Problem is that how to create one.

I have to populate some datas from sql server database and display it directly in a CSV Format or CSV file. When i run the project it should provide me an option to whether open or save or cancel the file. when i click open it should be opened and be viewed in a excel sheet in CSV format and when i click save it should ask the destination folder and should be saved there in CSV format and when i click cancel it should be cancelled and the application should be closed. pls note that all these actions should happen in the same browser and should not be redirected to anyother page. Can anybody give me the detailed description and code in Asp.Net using C# .It's very Urgent.

I am trying to load a fixed width text file using `Bulk Insert` and a XML format file. I have used the same process and XML file on another fixed width, except with less columns.

When creating xml fileformat its throwing me error "invalid ordinal".
When created non-xml file format, no error, and was also able to load data file into sql table. Not sure why bcp (Version: 10.50.1600.1) is not able to create xml file format.

I have a backup file of database which is in SQL Server 2000. it has no Extension.I want to restore this backupfile or this database in my SQL Server 2005.
I have tried to Attach Database or attach this backup file in Sql Server2005 but it also fails .
First I have created New database name as is on the backupfile and then I have also tried to rename this file with .bak extension and then try to restore again it fails.

Using SQL Server 2005 Server Management Studio, I attempted to back up a database, and received this error:
Backup failed: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Backup and file manipulation operations (such as ALTER DATABASE ADD FILE) on a database must be serialized. Reissue the satement after the current backup or file manipulation is completed (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Program location:
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Backup.SqlBackup(Server srv)
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlManagerUI.BackupPropOptions.OnRunNow(Object sender)
Backup Options were set to:
Back up to the existing media set
Overwrite all existing backup sets
I am fairly new to SQL 2005. Can someone help me get past this issue? What other information do I need to provide?

Anyone familiar w/ a utility/procedure which will allow me to:
LOAD a Sybase backup file (containing mulitple tables - tblA, tblB, tblC, etc) into a SQL Server database (tblA, tblB, tblC, etc)
Can DTS use a SYBASE backup file as input? (please elaborate)
(DB2 allows you to exec a LOAD utility using a backup file as input)

Hello,
I have a user database which has 1 data file and 1 logfile.
I did a complete backup of the database to a file on the disk drive, using Enterprise manager. Due to some reason, I had to drop the database. The only way I could restore it was by,
1. Create the database with the same name.
2. Restore the complete backup from the file device.
While doing so,
I get the message "Backup set holds the backup of daatabase other than the existing 'userdbname' database. BAckup terminating."
Is it because the database was dropped and recreated.
If I choose the option to overwrite, it restores successfully.
Is this normal and right way to do it? Is there any thing else that I need to take care of, while backup or restore?
Any suggestions welcome.

I'm using shared sql space on a new provider and am trying to import a database backup file - of the format filename.db.
I cannot figure out how to import this file type using the 2005 express tools - I can connect to the database and create and drop tables alright, but I cannot just import the existing database.
I really haven't got the time on my connection to download the fully blown SQL server trial to be able to do this, so can anyone help me out with any easier solutions?

Hi all,
I'm using shared sql space on a new provider and am trying to import a database backup file - of the format filename.db.
I cannot figure out how to import this file type using the 2005 express tools - I can connect to the database and create and drop tables alright, but I cannot just import the existing database.
I really haven't got the time on my connection to download the fully blown SQL server trail to be able to do this, so can anyone help me out with any easier solutions?

Dear all,
What I want to do is to backup my database through the SQL script, when the backup is successful, the .bak file is saved in my local harddisk. After that, I used the XYRunProc to execute a "copy" command to copy the .bak file to a remote server.
However, when I want to restore the database using the .bak on the remote server, I found that the .bak is corrupted. This problem does not exist if the file is copied to the remote server manually (click copy on local server and click paste on remote server).
Do anyone know what's the problem of this? This really made me very frustrated. Hope someone can help me, thank you very much!

Similar to a previous post (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=244646&SiteID=1), I am trying to import data into a SQL Table.
I am trying to program a small application that will import product data obtained through suppliers via CD-ROM. One supplier in particular uses Fixed width colums, and data looks like this:
Example of Data
0124015Apple Crate 32.12
0124016Bananna Box 12.56
0124017Mango Carton 15.98
0124018Seedless Watermelon 42.98
My Table would then have:
ProductID as int
Name as text
Cost as money
How would I go about extracting the data with an XML Format file? I am stumbling over how to tell it where to start picking up data for a specific column.
Is there any way that I could trim the Name column (i.e.: "Mango Carton " --> "Mango Carton")?
I don't know if it makes any difference, but I've been calling SQL from my code by doing this:

Hi,I am trying to use BULK INSERT with format file. All of our data hasfew bytes of header in the data file which I would like to skip beforedoing BULK INSERT.Is it possible to write format file to skip these few bytes ofheader before doing BULK INSERT? For example, I have a 1 GB data filewith 1000 byte header. Except for first 1000 bytes, rest of the data isgood for BULK INSERT.Thanks in advance. Hi everybody,
On executing the RESTORE command of SQL Server to restore from a backup of 78.3 MB, the "Server Application Unavailable" error message comes up.The error message in the Application log is as follows:aspnet_wp.exe (PID: 2184) was recycled because memory consumption exceeded the 152 MB (60 percent of available RAM).
However using Query Analyser of SQL Server I am able to restore the database.
What is the solution to this problem?

Where can I find info about how to backup Sql Server 2005 using a .bat file?
Is it possible doing it this way?
If so, can anyone direct me to some links how how to do this?
If not possible using a bat file... then how can I make schedueled backups? What tool to use and hopefully free.

I am getting following error:
"The log in this backup set terminates at LSN 9566000024284900001, which is too early to apply to the database. A more recent log backup that includes LSN 986000002731000001 can be restored."
If I am missing to restore previous log backup file, how to find which LSN mapped to which log backup file (.trn file name)? Another word looking at LSN can we tell which log backup file is missing?

I am working on a project for an SQL job. I am:
1.) Taking a database out of an availability group,
2.) Setting the recovery to simple,
3.) Shrinking the log file,
4.) Setting the recovery mode back to full,
5.) Then backing it up.
I need to restore the file to my secondary server with replace and non recovery mode. I am having trouble performing that call? I have the code to reestablish the database to the availability group if I can get the restore feature working.Â
