SQL Server Database Maintenance Wizard
Feb 13, 2002
I've heard from several sources that there are issues using the maintenance wizard with 7.0 & 2000 databases. I'm looking for information to either support or refute this. Can anyone help?

I ran the Maintenance Plan Wizard and created 2 plans, one for the system databases and one for the User databases. While running the wizard I was asked if I wanted to configure an operator to e-mail reports to.
Once that operator is selected, how can you change it without recreating the maintenance plan?
This is separate from an operator that can be configured within each job.
Thanks,

When i was going to run the Database Maintenance Plan Wizard on one of my databases, i received the following warning:
"Database 'HGB' is over 400MB in size. It is not recommended that you run the Database Maintenance Plan Wizard on databases exceeding this size. Do you still want to continue?"
My database has 1GB data space, with 757MB free and 341MB log, with 211MB free. What´s the matter on having too much free space? I thought that was good...

Hi everybody,
I need a way to create a database maintenance plan in SQL Server 2000, without using the wizard. So, I am looking for a way to create this plan either using TSQL or (even better) using VB6 code (maybe by using SQLDMO library). I want the end-user of my vb6 application to decide for the options of the plan (like scheduling or backup directory). Does anybody have any sample vb6 code for doing this?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I have a question that I hope someone can clear up for me. I have come across a number of different suggestions on DB maintenance, for example reindexing with the following script:
USE DatabaseName --Enter the name of the database you want to reindex
DECLARE @TableName varchar(255)
DECLARE TableCursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT table_name FROM information_schema.tables
WHERE table_type = 'base table'
OPEN TableCursor
FETCH NEXT FROM TableCursor INTO @TableName
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
DBCC DBREINDEX(@TableName,' ',90)
FETCH NEXT FROM TableCursor INTO @TableName
END
CLOSE TableCursor
DEALLOCATE TableCursor
My question is, doesn't the maintenance plan have this functionality inherent in it when you create the maintenance jobs to reindex? Is there a benefit to scripting things out vs just using the maintenance plan wizard for this sort of thing and any of the items it covers? I came from an Oracle background where this was a no-brainer but I am a bit confused on the choices with SQL Server.
Thanks.

I'm trying to backup several databases to UNC folders. I'm able to do itmanually for each database, but when I set up the maintenance plan it failsbecause SQL tries to use the SQL administrator account to push the data. The million dollar question is how does one change which account is runningthe maintenance?

I have created the backup plan for all the 40 user databases on one of the production servers.Scheduled to run the backup at Sunday 2.00AM every week on to a different drive on the same server. If all the databases are backed up at the same specified time, will it effect the performance or anything?Under the maintenance plan wizard, there is no option to select different times for different databases.Total size of all the databases will be 10GB.Does it take the backups one after another DB or all at the same time which is specified?Any idea on potential problems?
Thanks!!

Hi,
I'm just trying to use the Maintenance Wizard for the first time, but the SQL Server Management Studio shows me an error message about 'Agent XPs' is not running on my server; and I should activate it through 'sp_configure'?
I've tried to understand 'sp_configure' by searching it on MS TechNet, etc. But of course, because I'm not a SQL Server expert user; I don't even know how to use 'sp_configure' at all....
Anyone know how to work this thing around? Appreciate all the help...
PS: I almost forgot to mention, that I'm using MS Windows Small Business Server R2 2003 with SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition.

Hi,
I've small issue with SQL 2005 SP2. We have migrated database from another server with backup/restore procedure. Seems that db is properly set with cmp level 7.0. We are using standard maintenance plan for all SQL 2005 servers with option "backup all user databases", to have less work. Now it seems that dbs in SQL COMPATIBILITY LEVEL 7.0 cannot be backuped with Maintenance plan. They are not listed in the list of the databases and Maintenance plan is always reporting failure :
"Database '<DBNAME>' is not valid to be included in the maintenance plan."
Is there any way to fix this? Or can I safely switch db to CMP Level 8.0 at least?
Thanks for help

Hi All,
I have become frustrated and I am not finding the answers I expect.
Here's the gist, we support both Oracle and SQL for our product and we would like to migrate our Clients who are willing/requesting to go from Oracle to SQL. Seems easy enough.
So, I create a Database in SQL 2005, right click and select "Import Data", Source is Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle and I setup my connection. so far so good.
I create my Destination for SQL Native Client to the Database that I plan on importing into. Still good
Next, I select "Copy data from one or more tables or views". I move on to the next screen and select all of the Objects from a Schema. These are Tables that only relate to our application or in other words, nothing Oracle System wise.
When I get to the end it progresses to about 20% and then throws this error about 300 or so times:
Could not connect source component.
Warning 0x80202066: Source - AM_ALERTS [1]: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. If the component does not support the property, the code page from the component's locale ID will be used.
So, I'm thinking "Alright, we can search on this error and I'm sure there's an easy fix." I do some checking and indeed find out that there is a property setting called "AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage" in the OLEDB Data Source Properties. Great! I go back and look at the connection in the Import and .... there's nothing with that property!
Back to the drawing board. I Create a new SSIS package and figure out quickly that the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage is in there. I can transfter information from the Oracle Source Table to the SQL Server 2005 Destination Table, but it appears to be a one to one thing. Programming this, if I get it to work at all, will take me about 150 hours or so.
This make perfect sense if all you are doing is copying a few columns or maybe one or two objects, but I am talking about 600 + objects with upwards of 2 million rows of data in each!!
This generates 2 questions:
1. If the Import Data Wizard cannot handle this operation on the fly, then why can't the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage property be shown as part of the connection
2. How do I create and SSIS Package that will copy all of the data from Oracle to SQL Server? The source tables have been created and have the same Schema and Object Names as the Source. I don't want to create a Data Flow Task 600 times.
Help!!!

After looking through the archives at database maintenance steps used by others, I have decided on the following steps for each of my SQL Server 7.0 databases. I have set up a maintenance plan where they would execute in the following order for each database, if the preceding step is successful. If the preceding step fails, the job quits.
dbcc checkcatalog ('master')
dbcc checkdb ('master')
backup database master to master_dump with init, name = 'ASP Master dump'
dbcc dbreindex ('master', '', 70)
dbcc shrinkdb ('master', 10)
Now my questions...
1. The checkcatalog, checkdb, backup database, and shrinkdb commands appear in blue in SQL Server 7.0 to seemingly indicate they are commands. However, the dbreindex command is black. Does this mean that it is not recognized as a valid command? If so, why not? It is shown as a valid command in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
2. The value of 70 in the dbreindex command was the value shown in sample code in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. However, the Knowledge Base does not give any guidance on whether this is a good value or not. How should I make a decision on what value to use? The value of 10% for the shrinkdb command is also just a sample value from Microsoft. How does one know what value to choose?
If anyone thinks this is a poor selection of maintenance steps, please let me know that also.
Thanks!

The SQL Server group at Microsoft has just launched the SQL Server Hosting Toolkit with the release of the Database Publishing Wizard Community Technology Preview 1.The objective of the SQL Server Hosting Toolkit is to enable a great experience around hosted SQL Server. The Database Publishing Wizard works toward this mission by making it easy to upload a database from a development box up to a shared hoster. In its first incarnation, the Database Publishing Wizard is a command line tool that generates a T-SQL script designed to be executed in the script execution windows provided by most hosters in their database management consoles. In the coming months we'll be adding a GUI and building seamless integration between the tool and an upload service we'll provide to hosters for deployment.Details on the Database Publishing Wizard as well as the download can be found at http://www.codeplex.com/Wiki/View.aspx?ProjectName=sqlhost&title=Database%20Publishing%20Wizard.We plan to be releasing advances in the Toolkit frequently so check out this first CTP and give us your feedback! Thanks,Dan WinnSenior Program Manager, Microsoft SQL Server

I am trying to migrate a 2008 R2 (SP1) database with one secondary data file to a separate 2014 server using the Copy Database Wizard from the 2014 server, and connect to both SQL engines on that server. It consistently fails on step 5. I'm logging to a text file and the error I see is as follows:
InnerException-->Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.
StackTrace: at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection, Action`1 wrapCloseInAction)
I created a test database on the same 2008 server, also with a secondary data file, and it migrated flawlessly using the CDW. I am using the copy object method in all cases, and not the detach/attach method.
I would prefer to perform this without any downtime on the source (production) database.

I have a query. Here are the steps:
1. I created a maintenance plan using Visual Studio 2013 (nothing fancy pretty basic)
2. Using ssms 2014 I imported it (the dtsx file) under the Integration Services and it appeared there successfully
3. I connected to the Database Engine again using ssms 2014 - my expectation was to see it under the Management > Maintenance Plans folder but it was not present.

I installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, then SP1 and then SP2, Maintenance Plan worked. But if I installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise and then SP2 directly (skipping SP1), the Check Database Integrity in Maintenance Plan was not working. The error message is as follows:

The SQL statement that was issued has failed. Source: Started: 10:56:21 AM Finished: 10:56:21 AM Elapsed: 0.047 seconds. The package could not be loaded. The step failed.
Other tasks like Rebuild Index seem to be fine. SP2 is supposed to be inclusive. Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening.

One of my programmers changed their database from full to Simple recovery. Saw that my job that backs up the Full Recovery mode databases failed, so I moved that database to my Simple database backup job plan and removed it from the Full Recovery job. I am unable to remove the db from the Transaction Log task on the Full Plan because when I try to edit that job "Databases with Simple Recovery will be excluded"
My transaction log backups are still failing with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.Just want to remove that database so my Full Recovery backup job does not try to back it up.

I have inherited a server on which is a maintenance plan with two subplans on different schedules. In each subplan there are Execute T-SQL tasks with scripts for index rebuilds. Each task is set up with a Completion arrow to the next task and a Failure arrow to a Notify Operator Task. I was asked to add a task for index rebuilds to a specific subplan for a specific database, which is what the other tasks also do. I discovered that my task was failing but the others were fine. No notification was sent about my task failing even though the job is marked in MSDB as a failed job. I have sent a test email using the "Send Test Email..." option when right clicking Database Mail in SSMSand I receive an email so I know Database Mail works.
I set up a test job to model the index job that I can't get notifications from. I have two T-SQL tasks that just select the top row from a small table. The first task has a syntax error that I did so it would fail. I have a failure arrow to a Notify Operator Task and a Completion arrow to another T-SQL task with no syntax error which has a Success arrow to a Notify Operator task. As expected, when I execute this job I receive one failure email and one success email.
The only other troubleshooting step I know to try is to add a Notify Operator task before my failing task. That Notify Operator task will hopefully fire to tell me that the previous step was successful. I am not having problems with the other steps so I was just thinking I would try to get the subplan to send me a success email about one of the steps that has been working fine.

I am trying to use the Import Wizard to setup a daily job to import new records based on an ID field (PK). The source database is remote and a replica. I am inserting new records to update my table called the same thing. Both are SQL Native Client
Code Snippet
select *
from [CommWireless].[dbo].[iQclerk_SaleInvoicesAndProducts] as S1
join [IQ_REPLICA].[dbo].[iQclerk_SaleInvoicesAndProducts] as S2
on S1.SaleInvoiceID = S2.SaleInvoiceID
where S1.SaleInvoiceID > S2.SaleInvoiceID
When I parse the query, I keep getting an error message.
Deferred prepare could not be completed.
Statement(s) could not be prepared.
Invalid object name 'IQ_REPLICA.dbo.iQ_SaleInvoicesAndProducts'. (Microsoft SQL Native Client)
Anyone know an easy why to get this to work? Or should I add a create table to verify new records?

I've used the ADS sample program and it works well. I looked at the code and changed it to VB (sorry, I'm not biligual yet), and have tried to 'adjust' it so I can connect to a remote PC (XP running IIS) instead of the local PC using the workgroup information database (system.mdw). Any ideas of the connection string that could make the connection?..my intention is to RDA once a week between a mobile device (3g/gsm) and a 'poor man's' IIS web server.
I've tried everything I can think of, and I'm sure its possible since all I'm doing is changing the connection path.

I am trying to simplify a query given to me by one of my collegues written using the query designer of Access. Looking at the query there seem to be some syntax differences, so to see if this was the case I thought I would import the database to my SQL Server Developer edition.
I tried to start the wizard from within SQL Server Management Studio Express as shown in one of the articles on MSDN which did not work, but the manual method also suggested did work.
Trouble is that it gets most of the way through the import until it spews forth the following error messages:
