SQL Server Express 2005 Can't Launch BIDS
May 6, 2008After re-installing SQL Server Express 2005 and the Toolkit BIDS will not launch. Windows is looking for a file devenv.exe. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

Nov 25, 2007Looks like I sucessfully downloaded SQL Server Express Edition w/Advanced Services SP2 on my Vista-based notebook. Took care of the prerequisites from downloading with Vista. I see the Configuration Manager, and Error and Usage Reporting. But......How do I launch SQL Server Express please?

SQL Express 2005 And BIDS
Aug 31, 2006I'm sorry but I am so frustrated from searching and trying things! I can't understand why this can't be resolved much easier.............anyway
I am trying to use BIDS on sql server express 2005 after attempting to install the tool kit a couple of times on different platforms. I have installed:
1) VS 2003 (also Visual C# Express on another machine);
2) .net 1.1 and .net 2.0;
3) SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced services and the tool kit.
The sequence of installs is as follows
1).net 1.1 was there from the beginning
2)VS 2003
3).net 2.0
4)sql server 2005 express
5) tool kit
I see BIDS in the menu but devenv.exe does not exist. I've seen several workarrounds including finding and running vs_setup.msi but those don't work for me either. I am suspecting that the BIDS install conflicts with Visual Studio in any form! If this is true, can someone list those steps to follow to uninstall/re-install the products to get this working?

Unattended Install Of SSMS/BIDS After SQL Server Express

I'm currently trying to develop an unattended installation of the Client Tools to be distributed to developers workstations.
All is well on 'clean' machines, but the problems arise when an instance of SQL Server Express is already present. The install fails, and the reason isn't clear from the log files.
I know Express installs a couple of the Client Components (like Config Manager), and I believe this is what it blocking me.
Has anyone tried this scenario?
Would I be best to REMOVE the Client_Components first, and then re-install them with SSMS etc.? Or is there a better method?
I have to leave the Express Database instance untouched as I'm not responsible for its installation or maintenance.

Is this true that only one Person can query the Server at the same time? ( 1CAL Lizense)
I wrote a .Net Appllication and now the Appllication need acces to the Server to Query Tables.
In the "Rush Hour" it is possible that more than 100 Person make Querys from that Application to the SQL Server at the same time.
I donīt understand the CAL Lizens because the SQLServer Express allows up to 20 connection!?
The SQLExpress is for free and allow more connections than a paid Version?
Or is a difference between connection ( through the Appllication) and Connection through the Management Studio ?

I attended one of the SQL Server 2005 "Ready to Launch" parties a couple of years ago and was given a complimentary SQL Server Standard Edition CAL along with a copy of the SQL Server 2005 Standard setup DVD.
As there's no mention in the "Ready to Launch" pack of an included Server license I was wondering whether it is possible to install a copy of SQL Server 2005 on a standalone server and use the single CAL in a Production environment without having to purchase a Server license? The pack does include a Product Key - is this the Server license?

Package Works In BIDS, But Not In SQL Server 2005
May 3, 2007Most of my packages that I've created in BIDS will NOT run in SQL Server 2005. The simplest one that I have fails during a script task that calls external managed code. I've done all the steps outlined in "Referencing Other Assemblies...", but I'm still getting "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Here's a sample of a script that's having a problem. The line in green is the one that seems to be cause of the error. This is extremely frustrating. This code will even run from a command line console without error. Why is it so difficult to deploy one of these projects with managed code?

Newbie Question: How To Move A Package From BIDS To SQL Server 2005

I have problems with executing packages in the SQL Server 2005 and before I go into the details I would like to check, if my workflow is correct.
Can someone explain me the best way to move a package from BIDS to a SQL Server? I would like to store the packages in the SQL Server.
In addition if I login to Integration Services with SQL Server Management Studio I can see in the folder "stored packages" my package but I cannot view the folder "MSDB". Ususally I receive an error message from the named pipe provider, that I could not connect to the server (I am using Windows Authentication and my login is an administrator on the SLQ Server box)

Quick Launch 2005 On PC
Jul 25, 2007Poor me :o I have to share a home PC now so cannot have things my own way. When using my own PC I had SQL Server 2005 dev edition run on start up. Now I am sharing it seems rather churlish to not have it start on demand.With 2000 you got a little icon in the taskbar that indicated the status of SQL Server and a quick right click -> start was all you needed to get the little fella up and running. With 2005 you need to go all the way to configuration manager and start it. I have four options:#1 - a few mouse clicks to start SQL Server via configuration manager (unacceptable - imagine all the wasted time and RSI!)#2 - bat file to start SQL Server (ok)#3 - more sophisticated little app that shows the status of SQL Server in the taskbar and allows me to start it (nice but a pain to put together)#4 - something much spiffier which one of you gurus can let me in on I am sat on the edge of my little seat in anticipation :)

Oct 12, 2006I just set up a server with Windows 2003 Standard x64. I have a copy of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition that I got from the Microsoft Launch event. On the back of the case, it gives version requirements for both the x86 and x64 versions. When I went to install it, it didn't ask me which one I wanted to install. When I look on the CD, I see different installers for x86 and x64 for various pre-requisites, like MSXML. As I'm installing SQL Server I see that it is installing most things to "C:Program Files (x86)" which is where 32-bit programs go.. I decided to let it finish. Most of the binaries and everything, include sqlservr.exe, are in the Program Files (x86) folder, but it did install a few things in Program Files, so it must be aware of the difference.
I checked task manager and, I see that the sqlservr.exe and SQLAGENT90.exe are NOT 32-bit processes. So, great, they're running natively in 64-bit mode! But when I look at the server options in SQL Server Management Studio, the patform is listed as NT INTEL X86. The memory page also shows an option to use AWE which according to the documentation is only available and relevant to 32-bit installations.
SO I'm pretty confused. Almost everything points to this being an x86 installation, but the running processes are running natively in x64. Does anyone know what's going on here?
I just tried to run the x64 version of SP1 for SQL 2005, and it told me that it cannot update x86 products, so I guess that clinches it. I'm still pretty confused and annoyed though. If this isn't x64, how can I get an x64 version of the same product, and will my license key work?

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

I'm looking to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 (Standard Edition). I'm interested in using SSIS, SSRS and SSAS. I hear that BIDS runs inside of Visual Studio 2005, and comes with the SQL 2005 software. I currently have VS 2003. My question is: Do I need to purchase anything besides SQL Server 2005 Standard, or do I need to buy anything separately, like VS 2005? (if so, which version would you recommend?)

DTS Launch From SQL Server Agent

I want to build a task that does 3 things automatically at a fixed time interval:
1) Refresh the data (copy newly inserted data from a datamart to a datawarehouse)
2) Run a program (exe) to produce some external reports
3) Refresh an OLAP Cube with the new data so that users can access it
Basically, using SQL Server Agent, setting up steps 1 and 2 was pretty straightforward (for step 1, the main point of entry is a single sp).
I ran into some trouble figuring the easiest way to complete step 3. I created a DTS package with one object that updates the Cude on my server. This seems to be working fine. Then, I created step 3 in Agent and chose 'CmdExec' as the type of command. I then referenced the external exe 'dtsrun' to execute my DTS package.
Everything seems fine but I'm not sure I used the "best" way of doing things. Since the SQL Server Agent and DTS manager are both SQL Server tools (so is the Analysis services), I'm wondering if there wasn't an easier (thus more robust) way of completing my 3rd step?
Anyone? How is this done where you've worked?

(Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum) The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt). (2) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Features, I got a different error "Computer localhost does not exist on the network, or the computer cannot be configured remotely. Verify that the remote computer has the required computer has the required Windows Management Instrumentation components and then try again. I tried to do the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 programming in my terminal PC and I could not get a remote connection in the Window Form Application via Window Authorization. I do not know how to make this kind of remote connection in my Network. Please help and advise.

For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",

I Can No Longer Connect To My SQL Server Express 2005 From Manager Studio Express
Sep 28, 2006Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?

In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC.
1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.
