SQL Server Express 2005 Managment Console Not Logging In

Jun 14, 2007

Hi all,

We have a machine with SQL Server 2005 Express installed and we use to have no problems connecting to this using the management studio using Windows Authentication. Since yesterday when we open the management studio and press connect using Windows authentication, the logon dialog remains active but does not disappear. In the backgroung I can see the name of the instance on the machine and after a few seconds it goes to green, to show its connected but I can't do anything without cancelling the logon. If I cancel the logon, it sets it is not connected to any server, if i try to launch the instance from the registered servers, with the green connected symbol it hangs.

I have left the logon dialog overnight (14 hours) and it still did not disappear. I am looking at any patches that may have been installed but none since the end of May...does anyone else have a similar problem?

SQL Server Managment Studio Express 2005 Import/Export Wizard

Nov 29, 2006

I've created a new database and restored the database from a backup. I'm wanting to import raw data from an excel spreadsheet into the tables of the new database.

When I right click on the database, and hover over tasks the import/ export data menu options are not in the menu. The menu items ends at 'Generate Scripts'.

I'm connected on a local instance to a registered server.

Can anyone advise?

Trouble Logging In To SQL Server 2005 Express With Domain User Account

Sep 22, 2006

Hi all,

I have a SQL Server 2005 Express edition instance set up on one server, and IIS on another server.

The SQL Server process account is a domain user account, which I have added to the local groups that SQL Server created during installation (I originally used a local user account instead of domain account; however, the problem occurs with both).

SQL Server runs fine, and if I set my IIS application pool identity to a domain admin, my web app can access the database and retrieve the data necessary.

However, I have a domain user account that I want to use to run the app pool and retrieve the data. The domain user account is added to the IIS_WPG group on the web server. On the database server, I have created a login for the account, as well as added it to the db_datareader role of the database that is used for the site.

However, the user is not able to connect to the SQL Server. I get the "Login failed for user <user account>" error in ASP.NET. I also tried connecting with SQL Server Management Studio, and I get the same error. I checked and the user has connect permission to the database server.

With admin accounts, there are no problems logging in, etc.

Any pointers are appreciated,

Thanks,

SA.

Edit: I was able to find out that the State is 11 for the error. According to http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2006/02/21/536201.aspx, this indicates "Valid login but server access failure." I am not sure how to resolve this.

SQL Server Management Console Express And Linked S

May 17, 2008

Ok so I managed finally to get an Excel Spreadsheet to connect as a linked server.

When I right click it , go to run scripts and click on create to i can see the tab of script below:

/****** Object: LinkedServer [EXCELLINK] Script Date: 05/17/2008 08:37:04 ******/
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'EXCELLINK', @srvproduct=N'Excel', @provider=N'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', @datasrc=N'c:PRICINGFINAL2.xls', @provstr=N'Excel 8.0'
/* For security reasons the linked server remote logins password is changed with ######## */
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'EXCELLINK',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=NULL,@rmtuser=NULL,@rmtpassword=NULL

GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'collation compatible', @optvalue=N'false'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'data access', @optvalue=N'true'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'dist', @optvalue=N'false'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'pub', @optvalue=N'false'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'rpc', @optvalue=N'false'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'rpc out', @optvalue=N'false'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'sub', @optvalue=N'false'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'connect timeout', @optvalue=N'0'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'collation name', @optvalue=null
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'lazy schema validation', @optvalue=N'false'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'query timeout', @optvalue=N'0'
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'use remote collation', @optvalue=N'true'

Now I am not sure exactly how to go about querying to pull the data into a table.

The table I want to set will have three columns:

CREATE TABLE new_price (
item_id CHAR(12),
item_lst_lnd_cost DECIMAL(9,2),
item_prc_2 DECIMAL(9,2))

the columns in the EXCELLINK linked server spreasdsheet are named the same as the columns above. Once the table is created how do I use the linked server to import the data?

SQL Server 2005 Management Console

Apr 5, 2007

We installed SQL Server 2005 x64 on a server for our client here at our office. We can't connect to it using Enterprise Manager. I'm assuming we need to install the management console because of the differences in 2000 and 2005. The install is for a x64 and our workstations are x32. Do I need to get a media kit for a x32 because the x64 install won't work. Where can I get the install for the x32 Management console and will this work?

SQL Server 2005 Managment Studio Newbie: Can't See Stored Procedure

Oct 3, 2006

I just created a stored procedure in SQL Server 2005 management studio. I went to my db and expanded the programmability folder then right clicked the stored procedures folder and created a stored procedure. I saved the procedure as sp_getDistance in the default folder SQL managment studio picked. Now when I went back to that stored procedure folder I did not see my stored procedure sp_getDistance, all that was there was the system stored procedure folder. Did I save the stored procedure in the wrong place, or what did I do wrong. I can't find the procedure anywhere, its just sitting in my My DocumentsSQL Server Management StudioProjectssp_getDistance.sql folder. Thanks,Kyle Spitzer

Excel 2007 DataMining Add-in Database On SQL Server 2005 Destroyed By Using SQL Server Managment Studio?

Apr 26, 2007

Hello,

i have made some Data Mining Model Examples in Excel 2007 (not temporarily!). They where there after leaving an re-opening Excel. I have used them several times. Then I want to look, if I can see them also via SQL Server Managment Studio in the Analysis Services. There where nothing in the DMAddInDB in Analysis Services.

And after this, in Excel my DataMining Models have disappeared and all Models i have made since this disappeared also.

Perhaps I have destroyed the database. But will this happen every time? Can I share Data Mining Models I have made with Excel with Projects in SQL Server Analysis Services?

Thanks

SQL Express And Console Application

Dec 21, 2005

I have created a Web application that uses a SQL Express file Database (mdf). I have also created a console application that looks to the (mdf) in the Web Directory to process some server-side tasks, (Email, process data, etc). Everything works well on my Development Machine, however when I Publish my Web App and Console application to a server, the Web App works fine, the Console App is buggy. The main error I get is ;that the user logged into the server cannot access the Database. (User domcholman cannot access). However this is not always the case, sometimes it works.
Question is, how does SQL Express authenticate credentials when in Windows Auth mode? Shouldn't it allow the Service account to access the database? Are there any best practices? Should I use an account and password instead? thanks...

SQL Express And Management Console Ctp Issue

So i installed sql express and the management console and have the sql service and browser running. I try to connect to my instance of sql express with the management console and it says it doenst allow remote connections.
error: http://img95.imageshack.us/my.php?image=error28to.jpg
What do i need to do to be able to use the management console?
I was able to connect before but due to some bad advice think i stuffed up the whole thing and had to uninstall sql express and the management console. I re-installed them both but am now getting this error. what the heck is the deal with this? It shouldnt be this hard!
This is in relation to an earlier issue i had trying to get to connect to a database from within visual web developer express and now i can connect to my sql express instance but cant get into the managment studio. :(

Modifying Triggers In Managment Studio Express

Oct 16, 2006

I have a database with an update trigger, which shows up under the Triggers object in the database tree. When I modify the item and try to save it it prompts me for a disk location to save the query. I then reopen the item on the db tree, and it shows the old code. What am I doing wrong?

How To Apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 To The Version Of SQL Server 2005 Express Which Installs With Visual Studio 2005?

Aug 8, 2006

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.

How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?

Currently, if I run this query:

SELECT @@version

I get the following:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)

After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.

Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

Thank you,

Bashman

Use NoRows In VB .Net 2005 Console Application

Dec 15, 2006

I have a VB .Net console application that invokes a report via a web service call. It then renders the report into Excel and emails it to the appropriate party.

I would like to suppress the email event if the dataset is empty. So the question is, can one access the NoRows property or equivalent in this environment?

I am able to get some information from the following code:

rs.ExecutionHeaderValue = execHeader
execInfo = rs.LoadReport(reportPath, historyID)
result = rs.Render(format, devInfo, extension, _
encoding, mimeType, warnings, streamIDs)
execInfo = rs.GetExecutionInfo()

The result and execInfo do not seem to deliver back the row count. Is this information available at all? If not, I may have to do an ADO call to the query to get it. Running the query twice is a pretty inefficient solution.

Logging To Event Viewer Fails But SQL Server Logging Works OK - Why?

Jun 18, 2007

Greetings,

I am developing a package on my local workstation. I have defined two logging service providers. One is for SQL Server and the other is for the Windows Event Log. I am using the Dts.Log method in a script task to write log entries.

Logging is working properly with the SQL Server provider and rows are being inserted into the sysdtslog90 table. However, the only events that are being logged in the Windows Event Log are the package start and end events which I believe SSIS is doing automatically anyway.

Is there something I need to do to enable WIndows Event Log logging other than defining a log provider and making sure it is checked active? Won't SSIS write to two different logs with one Dts.Log call? Any ideas on what might be going wrong with my approach?

Thanks,

BCB

Edited Data Won't Propagate Back To The Database (VB 2005 Express && SQL Server 2005 Express)

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.

When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the

Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)

I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Thanks,
Ieyasu

Telnet Connection Works, Sql Cmd Connection Works, SQL Server Managment Studio 2005 Does Not

Jun 20, 2007

I'm having a strange problem with this but I know (and admit) that the problem is on my PC and nowhere else. My firewall was causing a problem because I was unable to PING the database server, switching this off gets a successful PING immediately. The most useful utility to date is running netstat -an in the command window. This illustrates all the connections that are live and ports that are being listed to. I can establish a connection both by running

telnet sql5.hostinguk.net 1433 and

sqlcmd -S sql5.hostinguk.net -U username -P password

See below:

UDP 127.0.0.1:1900 *:*

Both these utilities show as establishing a connection in netstat so I am able to connect the database server every time, this worked throughout yesterday and has continued this morning.

The problem is when I attempt to use SQL Server Management Studio. When I attempt to connect to tcp:sql5.hostinguk.net, 1433 nothing shows in netstat at all. There is an option to encrypt the connection in the connection properties tab in management studio, when I enable this I do get an entry in netstat -an, see below:

TCP 81.105.102.47:1138 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT

TCP 81.105.102.47:1139 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT

TCP 81.105.102.47:1140 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT

Amost as if it's trying the different ports but you get this time_wait thing. The error message is more meaningful and hopefull because I get:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

I would expect this as the DNS has not been advised to encrypt the conection.

This is much better than the : Login failed for user 'COX10289'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) that I get, irrespective of whether I enter a password or not.

This is on a XP machine trying to connect to the remote webhosting company via the internet.

I can ping the server

I have enabled shared memory and tcp/ip in protocols, named pipes and via are disabled

I do not have any aliases set up

No I do not force encryption

I wonder if you have any further suggestions to this problem?

Server Management Console Only??

Jul 13, 2006

Can the Server Management Studio Express be installed on a machine without SQL Server Express?

I have a machine that I use daily that I need to access a remote instance but there is not a need (or space) to fully install SQL Server onto the local machine - all I need is the management tool.

I tried installing it but the process errors out, saying a pre-requisite (MSXML6) isn't found. It refers me to a site with all the different SQL Server downloads.

All I need is the management tool on this machine. Is there a way to do it?

Tried loading "MOM" but it doesn't show up either

Thanks

Vista, Varbinary(max) And SQL Server Managment Studio

Aug 13, 2007

I'm running into an issue that only occurs on Vista machines against a SQL Server 2005. We have a table with a varbinary(MAX) column in which we store a csv/xls/xml file. When I perform a 'select * from my_table' within Management Studio the column data returned is sporadic...some rows are filled out and some are not. When performed on an XP machine all of the data is returned (every row's column is filled out). Is this a known issue? I tried searching for it but didn't find anything.
