Admin Tools

Jul 5, 2000

Hi Guys

I have just been trying to install the Admin tools from the SQL 6.5 setup CD on a Win NT Workstation 4 SP6 system. Everything seems to go fine until the icons are addded into the program group, these come up as system default icons and don't link to any programs. If I go into the installed directory and execute the programs then I get the following message:

The SQLOLE OLE object could not be registered. Class not registered (80040154)

After clicking OK the program terminates. I have tried diferent install directories, even diferent partitions. I have also deleted the directory and removed the Registry entries manual - this is because it cannot be uninstalled.

Still no luck.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

SQL 2000 Admin Tools

Hello,

I currently use Toad 7.5 for Oracle as GUI admin tool. Are there any good tools for SQL 2000 like Toad that provide an easy to use GUI.

I did check out Toad for MSSQL and it seems limited compared to the Oracle version.

Thanks,

However this means the tools we have cannot be installed on windows XP/2000 32 bit.

Is there some way to get the 32 bit tools as it appears strange that 32 bit tools were not provided for remote access.

Using SQL Server Management Studio Tools To Manage Dbs On SQL Server Express Edition

Apr 25, 2008

Hopefully a simple question: Is it possible to use Maintenance Plans created on SQL Server Management Studio (installed as part of an instance of SQL Server 2005 Standard Ed.) to back up databases running on an instance of SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services? I don't need directions, just whether or not it is permitted.

I've been able to create the plans including establishing connections to from SSMS to the the SQL Express instance, but they keep erroring out. I just need to know if this is actually permitted since Maintenance Plans are not available on Management Studio Express Edition.

Thank you in advance for your help.

How Can I Get Sys Admin Priviledges On SQL Server Express 2005?

Oct 12, 2007

I am trying to add a new user/login to my database, but SQL server keeps telling me that I don't have permission to do that (error # 15247). Right now I am running Windows authentication, and am logged in as the same user as I was when I installed SQL server, and that user is the administrator for the computer system I am currently running.

It seems like SQL server won't let me change anything having to do with the security of the system - I've tried changing to mixed mode authentication, but I receive the same error then as well.

SQL Server Express 2008 - Missing Client Tools / Management Studio / Profiler

Dec 13, 2007

I downloaded and performed a full install of SQL Server Express 2008 Nov CTP. It was installed on a fresh installation of Windows Vista Enterprise x64.

During setup, I checked the 'Client Tools' box which has the description:
"Includes management and development tools: SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Profiler, and Database Engine Tuning Advisor"

The installation ran fine with no errors. After install I looked for the Management Studio but couldnt find it anywhere. No SQL Server Profiler or Database Tuning Advisor either. The only tool that appears to have installed is the SQL Server Configuration Manager.

If I check my Start Menu, the only 2008 items that exist are

SQL Server 2005 Express Remote Admin Firewall Issues

Mar 6, 2006

Hi,

I'm experiencing problems connecting remotely (through the Management Studio) to a named instance of SQL Server Express 2005.

After investigation I determined it was a firewall issue - turn off windows firewall and I can connect fine. I initially added ports 1433 and 1434 to windows firewall - still no joy. Then I added the binaries explicitly (sqlservr.exe and sqlbrowsr.exe - or whatever they are) - still no joy. So, I looked into the firewall log to see what was being dropped. I found that my IP was trying to connect via port 1047 (TCP)... I've searched for anything about this on google and cannot find any indication that the management studio should be using this port to connect.

If I add this port, the connection works fine. Has anyone else experienced this ? As there seems to be no way of modifying the management studio to connect via a specific port, I'm a bit concerned that something is just not right.

I would appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks.

Setting Admin Rights To Report Manager, SQL Server Express 2005 On Vista Business

Mar 7, 2007

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to Reporting Services so please forgive my ignorance...

I've recently installed SQL Server Express 2005 with Reporting Services on my Vista Business Notebook (with no network connections) and have installed VS C# Express as well as the Business Intelligence Studio to create reports.

My C# application can connect to SQL Server fine, however, the reports I created with Business Studio refuses to deploy to the server due to the following reason:

"The permissions granted to user 'localhostJenny' are insufficient for
performing this operation".

I find this odd as I've been able to deploy reports on my other Windows XP machine (with SQL Server Express) no probs at all. Additionally, I cannot see the 'Site settings' link within Report Manager (Web) that I'd normally get with an admin account (i.e. on my Win. XP machine). Various sources indicate that my account has insufficient access rights to view this.

Having browsed through seemingly endless blogs and forums, I suspect that my local account has not been configured to access the Report Manager web client to publish, manage and administer the site.

I have tried the surface area tool for SQL Server, but I suspect that this is relevant only to SQL Server DB access and management. Adding an administrator here does nothing.

The question is, how can I grant access to myself (local account) to allow me to publish reports via business studio, and at the same time - administer Report Manager Site Settings - on my vista notebook??

I would be extremely grateful for any help on this matter - I've tried ceaseless reinstallations, but to no avail!

Many thanks in advance,

Jenny

Design Tools / Sql Server Mgt Tools Cause Login Fail

Sep 20, 2007

Login failed for user 'TOSHIBA-USERASPNET'
I know that the file persmission for the web application have to include aspnet, so i keep resetting the folder permission for aspnet in file manager, but the login failed keeps coming back every day or two
problem is after working with VS05 Pro, SQL Server Management Studio CTP, somehow the aspnet persmission get changed, use alot of sqldatasource wizards and often there is a conflict/hang between the datasource wizard and the need to have the mdf in a dettached state within VS server explorer,
not sure but the procedure to fix this seems to be to reboot, detach and re-attach the mdf in the Sql server Studio tool, re-apply the aspnet file permission on the web app folders (wonder should i be doing this in IIS instead), make sure the mdf within server explorer is detached, the it works
anyway, getting real tired of the resulting delays and design time derailment, clues greatly appreciated, thanks
sometimes i can use View in Browser when in VS05 form view and i wont get the aspnet folder permission error and other times i do.
last thing, is it a bad idea to give aspnet full permission for the entire web applicaiton??

Is Local Admin Required For C# Express/SQL Express?

Mar 10, 2007

I have been trying to get Visual Studio Express w/C# to work with SQL Express. If I run with my normal local privs set to Debug User, I get a Login Failed message when I try to add a SQL database using the Add Item feature from the Solution Explorer. If I set my account to run as local administrator, everything works as expected. I am unable to connect to anything from the Database Explorer as well unless I am local admin.

I can run the SQL Express management utilities with no trouble when logged in as Debug User, and everything else in Visual Studio seems to work OK as well.

Is there a cure for this? I keep preaching to my users about the dangers of running as local admin, so I would feel uneasy about doing so myself just to be able to use VS Express.

SQL Server Management Express Studio Management Tools

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Uninstalling Sql 2k5 Express Tools?

Oct 23, 2007

Hi,
While building a vista 64 Ultimate machine recently, I temporarily installed the express edition toolkit with visual studio 2005.
I have since uninstalled sql, and reinstalled the 64-bit developer edition. However it appears the toolkit did not uninstall completely - now when I try to install workstation components, bol, etc. It says that the upgrade is blocked.
Hard as it is to believe that an express install can block a developer edition install, it does.
I've tried reinstalling the ee toolkit, as any client/management tools are better than none - but this fails, saying that the components are already on the machine!! sheesh!
It doesn't give an option to uninstall.

Has anyone got any ideas. I've uninstalled *everything* sql related, reinstalled with sp2 twice. I can see and create databases using visual studios server explorer, but this does not give any management options. Does anyone know how I can remove whatever registry entries are fouling up this installation?

Thanks,

mk17

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Does Security-admin Role Plus Deny Alter Any Login Cancel Each Other Out

Aug 27, 2015

I want to set up a database role so that users can use sp_readerrorlog through SSMS. It does a check on membership in the securityadmin role.

I have tested it and can see you can grant execute on xp_readerrorlog but the SSMS GUI uses sp_readerrorlog.

I thought I could create a user/certificate and add the signature to sp_readerrorlog but it's not permitted (likely because it's not a normal database object).

So the other solution is to add the users to the securityadmin role but then explicitly deny alter any login (best done with a custom server role in 2012+ but otherwise just manually in 2008). I tested this out and it works, I'm not able to alter any logins or increase my own permissions, I also did a check of what's reported from fn_my_permissions(null, null) and it shows minimal permissions like I'd expect.

A War Between Me And The Network Admin Over The SQL EXPRESS

Sep 26, 2006

The network admin is saying that if I run my SQL Express in the office , it will intefere with his SQL Server 2000 connection and its services.

He asked me to disconnect myself from the network and do the work locally, what the!??

I had my SQL express remote connection set to Local and remote connections (using TCP/IP connection )

However , I really dont believe a SQL express running on my laptop would in anyway steal incoming connection to the SQL server 2000 running on the company server.

I now have my SQL express set to Local connections only, I would like to ask you guys does SQL express actually conflict with ANY services running on the same network ??

Thanks a million

SQL 2005 Express Local Admin Access Denied

Jan 3, 2007

I am using a standard installation of SQL 2005 Express installed with Visual C# Express. I have tried several connection strings, have tried connecting different databases, all of which end up giving me access denied for user <machineName>Greg (Greg is the local admin account for this PC. I found this guideline for connectivity questions (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=362498&SiteID=1), and have gone through it all, posting the answers to questions here. One thing that may be different about this machine is that it is a tablet PC (WinXP Tablet edition) and I am running VMWare Server. I also tried loading it on a WinXP Pro workstation with no VMWare, and have gotten the same results. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My connection string:
@"Server=(local);Integrated Security=SSPI;Database=Database1");

Client error message:

Client is local to the SQL 2005 Express - this is an application running on a local PC.

I am able to ping -a GREGBORG (as well as localhost)

I am able to telnet to port 1433 of my local machine, although Ctrl+[ does not give me an SQL prompt

I am using ADO.NET 2.0 and Visual C# 2005 Express

I have enabled Shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP.

I have no alias' configured, and am not requiring encryption.

I am using SQL 2005 Express loaded on Windows XP tablet edition.

The SQL browser is not enabled, and it says that it has no enabled devices associated with it.

SQL Server is running under the Network System account

I am running Clamwin anti-virus

Backup Strategy - SQL2005 Tools Versus 3rd Party Tools

My current backup strategy uses T-SQL jobs run by SQL Agent (writes out *.bak files) and then I have an Integration Services job that copies the *.bak files to our NAS device. I have performed a restore without issue. The jobs are all automated every four hours via SQL Agent. Is this a sound strategy or are there additional benefits to using 3rd party tools? If so, what are the advantages and which tool provides them?
