SQL Server Express - Can It Co-exist With SQL Server 2005?

Hello,
I had set up a MS Small Business Server with MS SQL Server 2005 and recently someone wanting to use Microsoft Dynamics with SQL Server Express installed SQL Server Express on the same server.
It appears that the developers have used SQL Server express to run queries against the SQL Server 2005 database and tables, and now SQL Server Express (Dynamics) has ground to a halt.
When I view the SQL Server Express server, I see all of the SQL Server databases. When I use Enterprise Manager, I used to see the SQL Server Express instance, but disconnected it.
Is there a way to remove the connections to the SQL Server 2005 from SQL Server Express without harming the SQL Server databases? I am unsure as to what will happen, and which is controlling which. I am a long time user of MS SQL Server 2005, and the connections and uses of SQL Server Express are foreign to me.
Any help, or info, or links you can point me at would help -

I just started getting into C# programming, and downloaded the express version for work and at home. At home, I also installed SQL Server 2005 Express, but not at work, since I already have the full version installed. Unfortunately, Visual Studio Express won't recognize the full version of SQL Server, and I was wondering if there would be any problems installing both the full and express versions side by side. As this is my work computer, I don't want to risk it unless I know it's safe. Thanks for any help.
When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:

After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.

I'm trying to link SQL Server 2000 sp3 to SQL 2005 64 bit. I keep getting Error 17 sql server does not exist or access denined. I tried adding remote user mapping and chaning the linked server properties to "Be made using this security context" without any success. Any help is appreciated.
If i have been using sql server 2005 express for developing my application and i decide to upgrade to sql server 2005 express with advanced services while still working on the same application, what will happen to my application's database. I have recently downloaded SQL Server Express which I have installed using Windows authentication mode. I cannot seem to be able to make a connection to SQL Server from Dreamweaver or Microsoft Visual Web Developer as I am getting an error Server does not exist or access is denied....

When I installed SQL Server Express I chose Windows Authentication. When I fire up SQL Express and view Security option - the installation program has set up an sa login with a random password. I did not set this password, but think this might be a reason why I can't connect. To rectify the problem I tried creating a new user in SQL Server Express with a password that I specified. On going in to check the settings, I notice SQL Server Express has gone and changed it from the password that I set up.
Now when I try and connect to SQL Server Express I specify the following in the connection paramaters
Server: BGIRLSQLEXPRESS
Database The database name that I've created
User: the new user that I created
Password: the password I created as part of new user setup
Now I get error message Server does not exist or access denied
Is the problem to do with passwords or perhaps one of the many parameters one seems to have to set up? How can I change a password if I didn't create it? Is there anywhere I can reset it?
PLEASE HELP - I have literally spent 3 days attempting to get this working and am about to give up entirely. Due to my lack of experience, I need very specific step by step instructions..
Hi, I want to make a component library in Visual Basic.NET and connect to a remote Sql Server. When I create a new DataSet with the wizard, I can only connect to a .mdf file, but not to a Sql Server. With Visual Web Developer I can connect to a Sql server. What is the difference between these enviroments ? How can I do the same with Visual Basic.NET ? Thanks in advance.
My instructions are to install Sql 2005 on server BIGPETE2. I found that there was already an installation of Sql 2000, with databases that I was quite sure should remain as SQL 2000.
According to info I found on the internet, it should be possible to have separate instances of 2000 and 2005, so I went ahead and tried to install, giving the 2005 version a different name, BIGPETE2005. It didn't hit me with any error messages, but neither did it install a different database server. When I was finished, I was able to open Management Studio, but the only database server it could find to open was BIGPETE2, which is not what I wanted.
Enterprise Manager still works, and the mdf dates haven't updated, so I'm guessing the data is still safe, but I need both servers up and running.

1. What service pack is it asking for?
2. And doesn't that imply that it's upgrading my Sql 2000 installation instead of installing a new instance of Sql 2005?
Q1: Does Sql Server 2005 Express support Web/Internet to other SQL Server 2005 Express Clients or does it have to Synch across the internet to a fully installed setup SQL Server 2005 with IIS?

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Hi, everyone, I am new in SQL server 2005. I had setup SQL server 2005 P2P replication. Somehow it did not work one of two way replication. I tried to delete the publication. However I could not do it. have the same problem. When I tried to delete the publication, I got the publication " " does not exist.[SQL server error: 20026]. I tried to use sp_droppublication, it gave me error "the database is not enabled for publication". Nevertheless, I can see the publication in MS SQL Management Studio and Publication monitor with OK status. I could not find the distribution database either.
Could you anyone has ideas to delete this publication? I am sorry I am not a programmer. Please give me more detail explanation if you can. Thanks.
HiIm trying to connect Visual Basic Express 2005 to a remote SQL Server Express 2005. I cant find how i can do that in VB.net Express.In Web developer there are no problem to connect to a remote SQL server but i cant find it in VB.net Express. The XP with the SQL server that i want to connect to is on the local network. Greatful for help!
Hi Guys, I created a Product database table using Visual Basic 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. I have just added a new column [Picture] to the database table, which of course, should store an image or picture of a product. I am writing to kindly ask you guys for help .

Hi Guys, I have had SQL Server Express and Sql Server Management Studio Express installed on my machine for some time and recently tried to install a trial of SQL Server 2005 as well. (Yes, I'm migrating from Visual Studio Express to Visual Studio Professional, just as in tended!) Everything went fine except that nothing seemed to be installed. I searched in all the obvious places - both on the Start/Programs menu and on the hard-drive: nothing. A check under Add/Remove Programs showed that Sql Server 2005 Express was installed, but called SQL Server 2005. So after a number of retries in which the install program kept saying that there was nothing to install, I selected every option under Advanced in the intall process. This resulted in stuff being installed and I now have SQL Server 2005 running on my machine, but no SQL Server Manager icon. My questions are:
Where can I find the SQL Server Manager executeable? Has anyone installed SQL Server Express, SQL Server Mangement Studio Express, SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio on a single machine successfully? If so, what order did you install them in? (I'm planning on uninstalling everything SXQL Server related and starting again.) Thanks very much for your help. Regards Gary

How do I upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express to SP2 if I also have SQL Server 2005 Enterprise SP2 already on the same box? I installed Sql Server 2005 Enterprise first, then applied SP2, then installed Visual Studio 2008 (which installed SQL Server 2005 Express).
When I try to upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express to SP2 using the special Express edition of SP2, I get an error message that says "None of the selected features can be installed". I end up having to cancel the install of SP2.
I'm left with SQL Server 2005 at level 9.0.3054 and SQL Server 2005 Express at 9.0.3042. How can I bring SQL Server Express 2005 to the same level as SQL Server 2005 Entperprise?
Hello!! How can I upgrade from SQL Server 2005 Express Edition to SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition? I see allot of example of upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005, but no example on upgrading from SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2005 Enterprise or Standard. Is this possible?
I need to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on a new Windows Server 2003 machine that has SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed by a backup application (Backup Exec). Will I need to uninstall the express edition in order to install the standard edition? Can the two coexist as separate instances or will the standard edition installation simply upgrade the express installation?
Hi all, I just installed my VS 2005 Pro (full installation) and it installed Sql Server Express 2005. I also have a CD for Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition which I have not installed yet. My need for Sql Server on my development machine is for building and testing apps - just myself - no users will be hitting my sql server on my PC. Most of the time I hit my web server's sql server but also want the engine on my PC for when I'm offline. Question: Should I install the developer edition and remove sql server express? Doesn't the developer edition more closely emulate the full-blown sql server, just that it only allows one or a few users to hit for development and testing purposes? At the same time, sql server express is scalled back in that it doesn't have all the goodies? Thanks! Stewart
Hi, My objective is using a single DB file (mdf file) + SQL Server Express 2005 to run my program I got two softwares here, Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. Firstly, I installed Visual Studio 2005, normally the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition will be installed with this software. After finishing the installation. I opened a new project and try to open a DB file (.mdf) from Visual Studio 2005, it works. The problem is that I can't restore the mdf file from an old database file since it lose a lot of functions that appear in SQL Server 2000 / SQL Server 2005. And it is too troublesome and inconvenient to edit a DB file in Visual Stuio 2005. Therefore, I have to install SQL Server 2005 for me to edit the mdf file, so that I can modify, backup, or even restore the mdf file with another DB file. After the installation of SQL Server 2005, I got a tool, SQL Server Managment Studio, to edit the mdf file. I can open the mdf file but when I double-clicked on the mdf file in Visual Studio 2005, it gives me the following error message: Connections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251 It seems the SQL Server 2005 modify some of the files in SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Is that SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition cannot be exist at the same time? It will be much like using Access DB file, without the Microsoft Access software, the program can still work well. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum) The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt). (2) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Features, I got a different error "Computer localhost does not exist on the network, or the computer cannot be configured remotely. Verify that the remote computer has the required computer has the required Windows Management Instrumentation components and then try again. I have SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed in a Microsoft Windows XP Pro PC that is a terminal PC in our office Network. My Network Administrator has granted my terminal PC for Administrator Use. I tried to do the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 programming in my terminal PC and I could not get a remote connection in the Window Form Application via Window Authorization. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area": (1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer O Remote computer Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option? Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?
