I recently downloaded Visual Studio 2005 Express along with the Learning Resources for Visual Basic Express video. First let me say that the Learning Resources is an excellent resource for beginners to become familiar with Visual Studio, Database and programming concepts. Although the series is probably too basic for experienced developers you may find it reveals a number of tricks in the Visual Studio 2005 interface.

Problem
I downloaded the VB Lesson 9 Visual Basic Project from Microsoft Learning Resources. With out making any changes to the project I compiled and ran it, making changes to the data and saving the changes. Every thing look great until you run it a second time and see that the changes to the data are all lost.
Observations:
1. Changes made to the data from within Visual Studio (Show Table Data) do take effect.
2. The in-memory data (DataSet) is changed as you move from row to row.
3. The TableAdapter.Update call returns 1, ostensibly indicating the number of rows updated.
4. The data in the database is not changed by the TableAdapter.Update call.
Operating System: Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2
Other Software installed on this system
20SQL Server 2005 Express
Visual Web Developer 2005 Express
Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise
Visual Studio .net Enterprise
Microsoft .NET Framework SDK
Microsoft Office 2003
If anyone can help me understand the cause of this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Hello:
I'm a beginner in data bases and I'm looking for data base theory,learning, preactices and another resources. Can you recommend me books, e-books, journals, web sites and communities? I'll aprreciate your help.
Thanks.
Having visited the above Video learning site, I tried the option of Downloading each of several of the videos, in order to play them at leisure, and perhaps, repeatedly.
On clicking the Download buttons, however, the video immediately starts playing in Windows Media Player 11, exactly as if I had clicked on Play the video.
How can I download these videos please?

Will I am running SQL 2005 Express on windows 2003 sp1 with a P4 3.4Gh (with hyperthreading), 2GB ECC RAM.
I am running software that connects to SQL and reads/saves data.
One of the programs which is CPU hungry manages data and the other manages the SQL connection and reads/saves the data.
My problem is that I am recieving an error that usually means connection to SQL is lost, this tends to be because the CPU hungry application is denying SQL from functioning.
However the annoying thing is the CPU use rarely passes 45% and in a another test environment never passed 5%. RAM is the same, consumption is less than 35%.
Please advise
Thanks a lot!
Dear All,
I have 1 problem here. I developed a desktop application and I am using SQL 2005 Express as my application database.
I found that after I closed my application, the SQL 2005 Express memory resources do not release. How do I release the memory resources except of restart the SQL services?
Do you guy have any better recommendation of other database is more suitable for desktop application?

Hi,I have been trying to register for E-Learning for MS-SQL2005 ... but IE aborts any time before the registration is finished ... (after sign-up, or information fill up, or before those steps): "Microsoft Internet Explorer a rencontré un problème et doit fermer. Nous vous prions de nous excuser pour le désagrément encouru.". I don't believe this working as designed despite this pb shows me that Microsoft has still progressed to make in quality ... (my computer is running W2K and is up to date with Windows Update).Any idea to access knowledge courses on internet for MS-SQL2005 are welcome :) Jean-Marc
View 4 Replies View RelatedHi group.I have been working with ColdFusion and SQL Server for some timenow....abour 4 years I guess. I have developed various web applicationssuccessfully. The scenario I am in is that a company would like me to comeon with them as a lead database admin type guy. I would still do a little CFdevelopment....but mostly it will be data management with SQL Server.Now....like I said...I have worked with databases for quite awhile...specifically SQL Server, and I am quite comfortable with it......butIm kinda worried that the position involves a lot more than I have done.Mind you I will have first hand knowledge of the database in place which iswhat this position is for....so I have somewhat of an advantage. But....Imjust wondering if I should do a short course that teaches me the ins andouts again. It's like I develop databases by winging it. Know what I mean. Ithink I know what I am doing...but what if I don't? Just wondering what yourthoughts are.

I'm very interested in learning SQL and SQL Server 2000. I am of above average intelligence, but have no prior programming experience. I am curious as to how long this may take to learn/establish "the basics". I apologize in advance if my question comes off as being foolish.
I've read that you're able to successfully use SQL Server 2000 without prior SQL experience. Is this true?
Ultimately, what would anyone suggest in terms of how to begin the learning (self-teaching) process? What are some good, recommended resources I may use either on-line or purchase, i.e. video tutorials, books, software, etc, etc. Any info or assistance would be greatly appreciated. I've run across an SQL Server 2000 tutorial video online and am considering purchasing it. The demo clips seemed well organized.
I appreciate any advice, suggestions, and recommendations.
Please feel free to email me directly.
Thanks!

I'm pretty familiar with SQL syntax. I am interesting in learning more of admin information.
I've got a lot to learn here and would like some discussion and/or links to helpful sites.
One of the most important things:
I'm trying to understand how the heirachry of groups and users work better. I noticed it is integerated with our active directory from windows server 2000. Is this just becuase of I choose intergrated security when I installed this?
I have many other questions but I would like to try and understand one thing at a time before moving on, so somebody encourage this discussion with me!
I am using the book SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services by Reed Jacobson and Stacia Misner Step by Step.
For building My First Cube, in the Cube Wizard, when the Radio button is checked for "Build the cube without using a data source", the Checkbox for "Use a cube template" is dimmed.
How do you remove the dimming so that the database "Adventure Works Standard Edition" can be entered for providing the template.
I find two files of Adventure Works in Visual Studio 8Microsoft.NET Framework... and three more Adventure Works files in in Visual Studio 8SDK....
Somehow the Adventure Works is not in the right path?
Thanks in advance for some help.

I am a retailer whose software back-end has just been upgraded from Accessto SQL Server 2000. (The front-end is an independently-written shop Point OfSale system)While I know a fair bit about computers, I know nothing about SQL Server.And frankly, I don't want to know much. I don't need to build any newdatabases, program SQL, or "be an administrator". All I need to know aboutis how to go into the raw data like I did in Access and change that data.(The front-end software has some limitations, and I have found it easier inthe past to go into the dB through Access and search-and-replace, andgenerally edit the data as though I was in Excel).What is the easiest and quickest way to learn the skills I need for doingthe same thing under SQL Server 2000?Is there a particular book or site that you could recommend?Is there in fact a tool in existence that mimics Excel in the editing of SQLdata??

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm working towards MCAD and as elective I want to do the SQL Server course. The exam is on SQL Server 2000. I was just wondering whether the online course that Microsoft currently have a available for free at https://www.microsoftelearning.com/sqlserver2005/default.aspx would be useful and applicable to SQL Server 2000, or whether it is sufficiently different product to make it confusing to use this as a learning resource.
Also if anyone can point me toward any webcasts for SQL Server that would be great. I listened to Fritz Onion's 15 part series when I studied for my ASP.NET exam and would like to do something similar for SQL Server 2000 if any are available.
We've got a 3rd party application that periodically runs SQL commands throughout the day. We've been getting issues with this application showing a sql error:
Transaction (Process ID 71) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.
In checking the processes on SQL Server, there were a lot, and process ID 71 was actually hitting a completely different database.
Is there a way to streamline how SQL Server handles processes, and what's the limit at any given time?
Hello,
I have been working as Sybase DBA for 5+ years, and I would very much like to add MS SQL Server to my resume. Given the common roots of the two RDBMS, it seems that the learning curve would not be as sharp as if I were going to learn Oracle or DB2. Can anyone out there know of any books that are geared toward learning MS SQL Server from a Sybase DBAs perspective?
Thank you,

Hi.
I have installed an SQL 2005 Failover Cluster on a Two Node Active Passive Windows 2003 Cluster.If i am trying to failover from the Active node to the passive Node,The Sql Server,Sql Server Agent and SQL Analysis resources fail,However if i reset the passowrd in the services tab of the above three services on the pasive node,the resources come online.
Below is the brief of my setup
1.I have two Active directory domain controllers running Windows 2003 R2 Standard edition with SP2.
2.i have installed a Windows 2003 Two Node Active Passive Cluster as NODE1 and NODE2.
3.The Domain account used to install WIndows 2003 A/P Cluster is Clusteradmin.This account is the member of Administartors on the Domain as well as the Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
4.SQL 2005 with SP2 is installed on both the Nodes as SQL 2005 Failover Cluster.The account used to install SQL 2005 is sqadmin.This account is the member of Administartors on the domain and the member of Local Admins on NODE1 and NODE2.
5.SLQ 2005 has four domain groups for 4 SQL Services.The Services are SQL Server,SQL Server Agent,SLQ Anaylisis Server and Full text Search.
6.Each of these servcie has a seperate service account created for them.All these service accounts areb the members of domain admin and the member of Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
7.Each of these servcies is running under these servcie accounts in the Servcies tab in NODE1 and NODE2.
8.If i fail the resources from NODE1 to NODE2 ,The SQL Server,SQL Server Agent and SQL Anaylisis resources are failing.on going to the service tab of NODE 2 I reset the password for these services,the services come online.
10.The Cluster resources and MSDTC Resources are Failing over successfully.They are coming online successfully.
11,I have a problem with the SQL Server Resources,even if i failback to NODE1 from NODE2,the same resources are failing again.
Plz Advice.

Khalid

Hi, i am getting this error when i am running a stored procedure.
Transaction (Process ID XXXX) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.
i think so it is getting this error becasue it blocking it self at one point in the SP
DECLARE cty_Cursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT Country FROM TB_Country
declare @cty varchar(2)
OPEN cty_Cursor;
FETCH NEXT FROM cty_Cursor into @cty;
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
EXEC SP_DO_SOMETHING @cty
FETCH NEXT FROM cty_Cursor into @cty;
END;
CLOSE cty_Cursor;
DEALLOCATE cty_Cursor;
i think so it calls the SP then before SP finsih its working it calls it back from cursor with other argument.
how we can make it sure it finish it execution before it is being called again. i think so we need some sort of lock here but i am not able to find right solution . please anyone suggest something.

Haroon

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe've set up a report farm with two servers, both 64 bit with 4 CPUs each. One has 16Gig and the other 8Gig of memory. We're using Windows NLB and the load test software confirms that the NLB is working. When we run a number of concurrent reports, both servers get utilized, but they only work on a few at a time. The report server queue doesn't seem to be fully utilizing the hardware. From a prior post I've learned that the report server queue automatically runs 4 reports per CPU. This is not occuring for our setup. Has anyone else experienced the same? Are there any configurations that need to be set to open the queue up? The reports are heavy (300,000 records grouped and summed). Does this affect the queuing process?
I have about 50 databases that are only accessed once a month and on a predictable schedule. Would it free up resources on the server if they were kept offline and brought online only when needed ?

How to restrict resources usage based on individual Databases in resource governor?
We have many databases in one instance; I would like to restrict resource usage to each database respectively.
I created 2 pools as pool_login, pool_DBNAME, and 2 workload groups as GroupLogin,GroupDBNAME, and also the classifier function.After setup above, I use following statement to check what sessions are in each group .
Even if there are spids which are accessing database DBNAME, I can’t see that they fall into the group GroupDBNAME and pool pool_DBNAME.
SELECT s.group_id, CAST(g.name as nvarchar(20)), s.session_id, s.login_time, CAST(s.host_name as nvarchar(20)), CAST(s.program_name AS nvarchar(20))
FROM sys.dm_exec_sessions s
INNER JOIN sys.dm_resource_governor_workload_groups g
ON g.group_id = s.group_id
ORDER BY g.name
GO
Following is the code to create pool, group,classifier function:
USE master
GO;
-- Create a resource pool pool_login.
CREATE RESOURCE POOL pool_login
WITH
[Code] ....
-- Create a workload group to use this pool.
CREATE WORKLOAD GROUP GroupLogin
USING pool_login;
GO
CREATE WORKLOAD GROUP GroupDBNAME
USING pool_DBNAME;
[code]....
-- Register the classifier function with Resource Governor.
ALTER RESOURCE GOVERNOR WITH (CLASSIFIER_FUNCTION= dbo.rgclassifier_v1);

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to put this but as its the beginners forum I thought I'd take a chance.
What's becoming more evident to me is my weak SQL skills. I'd like some advice on the best place to learn properly. It's starting to become a part of my role and i'm struggling a bit.
Should I go on a course? I have a number of teach yourself books and an evaluation version of the software but is this enough? I've worked through the books but struggle to apply the book to the real situation i.e subqueries
How did the more proficient of you learn SQL?
I want to get to a stage where I can help others with their SQL problems rather than always being the one helped.
Any advice much appreciated.
Hello
I am considering taking an on-line course in SQL, such as...
http://www.transcender.com/product.aspx?product%5Fid=Pak%2DMCDBACORE&dept%5Fid=100403
I do not work with SQL but I do have good computer knowledge and experience of MS Access and visual basic. Would it be plausible for me to complete such a creditation without the work experience or is it asking too much? I have a lot of time to focus on it at the minute. Does anyone have any knowledge of this particular company or can you recommend a better one?
Also, is there any way I could complete this course on a Mac (pre intel)?
Any help/info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
