SQL Server Express Is Locking The Database

I'm running a website on IIS 6.0 w. ASP.Net 2.0 and SQL Server Express 2005 via the native client. The connection string is fairly standard:
<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=c:DotNetNukeApp_DataASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
I find that after the website has been running for a while I can no longer open the database using SQL Server Management Studio Express (I get an error indicating that the physical file has been locked). Even if I shutdown and restart both IIS and SQL Server, it remains locked and can only be opened once I find and "End Process" all the sqlservr.exe instances from the Task Manager.
Is this a known issue? Any way to find out what is locking the database, or any specific configuration to check?

I am using following sql to extract locking information in database. It only work on current selected database, how can I tune to work on all databases and not only currently selected?

Hello,
I am pulling my hair out here... I don't seemt o be able to solve this issue. I am Developing a new website using Sql Express. But I get this error sporadically claining that the "file is in use by another process".
Thinking it is the Express management Studio I shut it down.... Nope still errors..
Ok maybe it is the XSD designer.... So I close that XSD designer window in visual Studio.... nope still erroring.
hmmm... Maybe I'll shutdown Visual Studio and try that... Nope still gives the error.
Ok let restart the SQL Express Services.. Nope still errors.
OK OK REBOOT... Now it works for about two testing iterations. Then it starts all over....
What is locking this file? Is their any tools out there to tell me what is locking the File?
I am using XP Home Edition, VS 2005 Statndar Edition with Sql Express...

Hi All,
A client of mine has an update to the software they use which requires SQL ports to be pinholed on the
router to allow direct connctions from point of sale terminals. I'm not happy with the idea but thats not my call.
Is there a way to restrict IP addresses that can connect to SQL Express ? (without havng to get them to buy
a new router)

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum.
Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it.
I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list.
As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?

Okay, I've read massive topics on ClickOnce, and embedded database applications, etc, etc.
I need a handful of good suggestions how I can create a deployment package, to get my sql express database onto a SQL Express server.
The database will need to be multi-user, because I am also developing a WinForms application to connect to the SQL Express database.
I'm thinking I need to use some automated scripting features, to generate scripts for the database once I am done (unless you have a better suggestion).
After that, I need to know what to do with those scripts, and how can I create a setup / deployment packages to run those scripts against a SQL Express server.
The other alterntative obviously is to copy my sql express database, and run an attach command. This will work the first time, only because this will have been the first deployment of this database.
Please keep in mind when answering this question, that I will not be embedding the database, and as far as I understand ClickOnce is a feature for use with embedded databases or user instance databases (not sure).

Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

In the last one and half years, I used the Northwind Database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to learn the programming of SqlConnections, Data sources, Database Exploere, ADO.NET 2.0, etc. via VB 2005 Express.
The Northwind Database in my SSMSE got lost very often, but I was not aware of it. How can I know where the Northwind Database is used or processed by my VB 2005 Express projects that were the examples of some tutorial books or my trial projects? How can I release the Northwind Database back to my SSMSE from the VB 2005 Express projects? Please help and advise.

I am new to this type of programming and and have read all articles on adding an image to the database and it seems they all use sql queries to add an image but I want to add an image at design time. I am using Visual Basic 2005. I am also using Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition to try the same thing. I am trying to build a Translator program for english to Brazilian Portuguese and the reason I want to add the images is so that when I translate the word cat from english to Portuguese, I can also show an image of a cat. I've had reports of 2 users being able to open the same record at the same time and

I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Please help and give me some detailed procedures/instructions to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase (or ChemDatabase itself) from the SQL Server Management Studio Express to the App_Data folder of the website of my VWD Express project?

I run SQL Server 2000 and use thier database maintenance plans tobackup my databases. My questions is what happens if a change is beingmade to a database table while a backup is running? Should I be lockingthe databases before the backup begins?Scenario:1) Database Plan begins backup at 7:00 PM.2) At 7:01 PM a web user updates their password while the backup istaking place.3) at 7:15 PM the backup is complete.In this scenario, will the change/update made in step (2) be containedwithin the backup?On Another note, can anyone point me in the right direction for "BestPractices" on establishing a Recovery Mode for a database? I have beentold to set it to "Simple" so the logs do consume a lot of disc spaceand performance. The issue with this is I am not sure if I should bemaintaining a full transaction log. Our database only changes on amonthly basis. The only "on going" updates that may take place is auser changing their password. We also have other databases that changeoften throughout the day. I assume after a transaction log has beentruncated, the amount of disk space it consumes is minimal? So pleaseany information or a kick in the right direction would be muchappreciated. Thanks.

Hello everyone,I have around 20 reports in an ASP web-application which connects to aSQL Server 2000 dB, executes stored procedures based on inputparameters and returns the data in a nice tabular format.The data which is used in these reports actually originates from a 3rdparty accounting application called Exchequer. I have written a VBapplication (I call it the extractor) which extracts data fromExchequer and dumps the same into the SQL Server dB every hour. Therunning time for the extractor is an average of 10 minutes. Duringthese 10 minutes, while the extractor seems to run happily, my ASPweb-application which queries the same dB that the extractorapplication is updating becomes dead slow.Is there anyway I can get the extractor to be nice to SQL Server andnot take up all its resources so that the ASP web-application users donot have to contend with a very very slow application during thosetimes?I am using a DSN to connect to the dB from the server that runs theweb-application and well as the other server which runs extractor.Connection pooling has been enabled on both (using the ODBCAdministrator). The Detach Database dialog gives me a list of openconnections to the dB. I have been monitoring the same and I havenoted 10-15 open connections at most times, even during the executionof extractor.All connection objects in the ASP as well as VB applications areclosed and then set to nothing.This system has been in use from 2002. My Data file has grown to 450MBand my Transaction Log is close to 2GB. Can the Transaction Log be aproblem. For some reason, the size of the Transaction Log does not godown even after a complete dB backup is done. Once a complete dBbackup is done, doesn't the Transaction Log lose its significance andcan be actually deleted? I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Hi, i have a MDF file used by an asp.net application (with sql server 2005 express).
I want to make it to a permanent database in sql server express.
I know that i can attach it from Management Studio, but is there no better way?
Does it exist a way to 'import' or 'migrate' or copy' a .MDF.database into the central sql server, as if created directly in sql server express? After that, i can delete the .MDF file.

I have a table X with 61390 rows on it. IT is a crucial table which is being read and updated constantly. If I create a clustered index on the Primary Key (identity column) and run UPDATE x SET c1 = 1234 where PKCOL = 4321 the best lock I can get is a table Lock. If I create a compound non-clustered index on C1 and PKCOL the best lock I can get is a Page Lock. PAge Lock is OK but as this table is in High demand I want a row lock so others can carry on referenceing other parts of the table. WHy does it take a page lock and not a Row lock?

I'm trying to determine if a row in a table is locked. First, I issue a lock on some rows. Then, I query the syslockinfo table to see which rows are locked. It tells me which rows are locked, but it returns a hashed resource value that, I guess, is somehow related to the key. How can I un-hash the value? Or, how can I hash my own key so that I can compare it with the hashed value? I have tried using the HashBytes function, but I don't know what is actually being hashed when the row is locked.
For example:
begin transaction
select * from test with (rowlock, updlock)
select * from master..syslockinfo
where rsc_objid = (select id from sysobjects where name = 'test') and req_mode = 4
returns:

Hi
I have a setting where two Web Servers access the same SQL Server database. To gaurantee consistent data writes and reads I need to lock part of the database in special conditions.
I know exactly when I need particular tables of the database to be locked, but I am in doubt of how to do it. Does SQL Server 2005 have any mechanism for providing locks gauranteed to free the lock if one of the web servers crash - or if SQL Server itself crashes?

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:
"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".
I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.
The most puzzling to me things are:
- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).
- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".
During installation before failing the setup displays following:
"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.

I have two problems on creating new SQL server database in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express using SQL server 2005 Express.
The 1st problem: (It is resolved)
After installed SQL Server 2005 express and Visual Web Developer 2005 Express. When I tried to create a SQL server database in VWD the following error occurred:
"connection to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL server express 2005 to function properly. please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=49251"
I was stuck with this problem for few days. I did several times of install/reinstall of VWPExpress and SQL server Express, made very sure following proper de-installation sequence as specified in the release readme. But it did not resolve the problem.
Latter I found out that if I login with another Windows XP user account, I don't get the problem.
Changing the security authority of XP file systems and IIS didn't help.
And to prove that I was doing the installation correctly, I tried a new installation of the VWDExpress with SQL server 2005 express in another machine, it worked and I could create new empty SQL database.
After 2 days of frustrating changing of options, parameters, server names, messing with the registry etc.... Finally, I found a way to overcome this problem.
The solution is:
In Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, select:
Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> Data Connections,
Change the setting: "SQL Server Instance Name (blank for default)" to "SQLEXPRESS". (where SQLEXPRESS is the default server instance name)
That solved this 1st problem.
I still don't know the exact reason for this problem. But I recalled I did installed the VWDExpress few weeks ago, I might have installed it without selecting SQL server 2005 express at that point. I guess the subsequent install/re-install did not clean up those junk in the registry.
I still have the 2nd problem:
The "Create new SQL database..." option is always grayed out when I right click on the Data connections in the "Database Explorer" tab.
I have a bypass for this difficulty for time being:
I have to do it by using the "Add connection....", put in the server name: "myserver/SQLEXPRESS" and a new database name.
Any input form anyone ? Appreciated!

Im fairly new to all this stuff I am looking to build a database driven website that won't be a very large database. Can i use Microsoft SQL server express edition for this purpose, can you host MS SQL server express edition databases anywhere?. If you have disadvantages and advantages to help me make up my mind, I struggled with mysql and ASP.net so I decided to go with webmatrix's code builders for MS SQL server..any help and advice would be great!
Is MS Sql Server express a free download? Of so what are the limitations? in terms of a web based database application.

I'm a beginner w ith SQL Express and am having some problems. I am using 2005 SP1 and installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express as well. I have a backup from a SQL Server 7.0 database that I am trying to restore into my database using the management studio. When I try to restore from the file into my database, I get the error,
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of the system database on the device D:GMBeta2Local.bak cannot be restored because it was created by a different version of the server (7.00.1063) than this server (9.00.3033). (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
Is this true? Is there any way for me to get this data into my SQL Server 2005 express on my laptop?
