SQL Server Express Query
Nov 16, 2005
Hi - I can't see a forum specifically for it, so apologies if this is the wrong place.
While learning VWD Express/ASP.Net 2 - I would still like to install and use Sql Server Express.
1) can I point my aspnet 1.1 app to Sql Server Express - or will it only work with aspnet 2.0
2) currently I have a job scheduled to baqckup my MSDE 2000 db (on a web server) to the local server - is there a schedule/job function in SQL Server Express
3) I understand it is file based now - so just copying and pasting the file, is as good as making a backup of the database - is that correct?
Thank you for any help,
Mark

I have tables [CustomerData] ([CD]) and [MembershipData] ([MD]).
[CD] has
ID - Primary key
FirstName
LastName
Birthdate
Etc
[MD] has
ID - Primary key
Customer - The ID of the customer from [CustomerData]
StartDate - Membership start date
EndDate - Membership end date
Each [CD] can have multiple [MD].
Memberships can be looked at in one of four ways. They are also prioritized (see next paragraph) in this order
Current: Membership started on or before today and ends on or after today.
Future: Membership starts after today.
Past: Membership ended before today and start and end dates do not fall on 1/1/1900
None: Membership starts and ends on 1/1/1900
I have created four Views that return all memberships for each type. I am trying to create a query that selects all [CD] and includes the highest matching membership for each [CD]
I have a working query that will return the highest priority [MD] that a [CD] has when I specify a [CD] in my WHERE.
That query looks like this. (CurrentMembership, FutureMembership, PastMembership and NoMembership are my Views)
IF (EXISTS(SELECT * FROM CurrentMembership WHERE Customer = 452))
(SELECT TOP 1 * FROM CurrentMembership WHERE Customer = 452)
ELSE
IF (EXISTS(SELECT * FROM FutureMembership WHERE Customer = 452))
(SELECT TOP 1 * FROM FutureMembership WHERE Customer = 452)
ELSE
IF (EXISTS(SELECT * FROM PastMembership WHERE Customer = 452))
(SELECT TOP 1 * FROM PastMembership WHERE Customer = 452)
ELSE
(SELECT TOP 1 * FROM NoMembership WHERE Customer = 452)
I have it working for one specified individual. I'm at a loss as to how to extend it to work for all individuals.
Any ideas?
TIA

Hello,
I have an Access 2003 application that uses a query to supply sorted data to a combobox on a form. This bit works fine.
I've upsized to SSE and have now got a few learning opportunities! Can anybody suggest how I can get the same functionality in the upsized/SSE version? Do I need a stored procedure or a view (or something else) to deliver sorted data? As you can tell, what I know about SQL Server wouldn't cover a postage stamp! Any recommendations for good books on the subject?
TIA for any help.

Hi guys,
I am using DLinq with SQL Server Express 2005 and I need to install some kind of user interface which shows me a trace of the SQL statements sent. I would like to see them in real time (I won't like to inspect a log after :-).
I remember that there was something similar in SQL Server 2000 full edition, but I requiere the same functionality in the Express version now.
Could you tell me if there is some tool to do that?
Thanks in advance,
Erich.

What is the Difference between the SQL Server Express Bundled with C#/VB VS the downloadable SQL Server Express SP1 with advanced Services?
I installed C# with SQL Server Express, however I wanted to add the Full Text Searching and the SQL Server Management Studio Express, so I downloaded and installed the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP1. When I installed it over top of my current installation, it complained of version mismatching, and then C# failed to recognize that I had SQL 2005 Express installed at all.
What I'd like to know is, which version is more current (they have to be different, they had different version numbers, one was 9.xx.xxxx the other was 2005.9.xx.xxxx) The one bundled with C#, or the SP1 downloadable one.
Firstly, I want to be up todate as far as security patches, and Secondly, how do I add the full text searching and SSMSE to the one bundled with C# without breaking it.

HI
Q1: Does Sql Server 2005 Express support Web/Internet to other SQL Server 2005 Express Clients or does it have to Synch across the internet to a fully installed setup SQL Server 2005 with IIS?
Q2: Does SQL Server 2005 Express support Direct Replication between other SQL Server 2005 Express clients?

I have the "Northwind" database in my Sql Server Management Studio Express.
In my C:ProSSEAppsSamplesForChapter02Chapter02 folder, I have the following 2 files:
(1) ListColumnValues (MS-DOS Batch File)
sqlcmd -S .sqlexpress -v DBName = "Northwind" CName = "CompanyName" TName =

Hi
I'm a newbie and I have a problem that i can't solve despite sitting here all day trying to wortk it out.
I have installed SQL Server Express 2005 along with the associated toolkit. Previous to that i installed MS Visulal studio 2005, .NET 2.0 and MSDN.
The problemn is that it appears despite installing everything i don't have SQLExpress services running on my PC. I have admin rights, it installed okay but there is nothing to connect to.
When i run "sqlcmd.exe -s (local)SQLExpress -E" from the command prompt i get the following message:
HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.
When i run SQL Server Configuration there is no "SQLExpress" service present under "SQL Server 2005 Servcies" in SQL Server Configuration dialog; just a message saying:
"there are no items to show in this view"
When i run Surface Area Configuration i get the following message:
TITLE: Surface Area Configuration
------------------------------
No SQL Server 2005 components were found on the specified computer. Either no components are installed, or you are not an administrator on this computer. (SQLSAC)
------------------------------
BUTTONS:
OK
------------------------------
If you can shed any light on this id be extreamly grateful as i'd been here for hours before stumbling across the toolkit (why this wasn't bundled i don't know) only to realise once i had it that the SQLExpress service isn't running :(
Cheers,
Nick.

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Hi all,
For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS
|-| Database Engine
Service
I picked => Remote Connection
On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
O Local and remorte connections
O Using TCP/IP
O Using named pipes only
O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes
Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?
Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Hi,
I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum.
Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it.
I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list.
As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?

Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi all,
In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC.
1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.
2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express? The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe?
TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)>>The server is not remote so I don't see why I need to enable remote connection. I am also using the default connection settings.

I have an Excel add-in that connects to a SQL Server Express 2005database. I've decided to create a configuration piece for this add-inin Visual Studio 2005 Express. I added a data connection using the dataconnection wizard and all appeared to go well. Anyways when I attemptto open SQL Server Express to administer the database, it was corruptedand I had to restore it.I eventually got it to work correctly (I'm pretty sure I followedpretty much the same steps as before), but I was just wondering ifanyone had experienced problems like this? I find it a bit scary thatit may be that easy to corrupt the database by just creating a dataconnection.

Hi,
I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
-----------------------------------------------------------
The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
I tried to re-install the SQL Server Express another 7 times wth no luck.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bill

On my home machine without permanent network connections enabled, I cannot get the Management Studio connect to the database server. Always get this error:
Cannot connect ot MPLIAMSQLEXPRESS
Additional Information:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, erro: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)
I have used the SQL Surface Area Configuration Tool to reset the defaults to allow remote connections, stopped and restarted the server, but still get the same message.
Please help.

Really confused ... I created 2 tables in a VB Express program (which went well). Problem is that I can't see/find those tables with MSME. I don't really understand how to connect the MSME to where the tables are. I created the tables under My DocumentsData and they are DBapp.mdf + DBapp_log.LDF and the tables are Items and Preferences. The VB application can "see" the tables OK.
Do I need to move the tables to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSQL.1MSQLDATA (like the Adventureworks installation which I haven't done) or what?
Please help a newbie
Thanks
George

Okay, I've read massive topics on ClickOnce, and embedded database applications, etc, etc.
I need a handful of good suggestions how I can create a deployment package, to get my sql express database onto a SQL Express server.
The database will need to be multi-user, because I am also developing a WinForms application to connect to the SQL Express database.
I'm thinking I need to use some automated scripting features, to generate scripts for the database once I am done (unless you have a better suggestion).
After that, I need to know what to do with those scripts, and how can I create a setup / deployment packages to run those scripts against a SQL Express server.
The other alterntative obviously is to copy my sql express database, and run an attach command. This will work the first time, only because this will have been the first deployment of this database.
Please keep in mind when answering this question, that I will not be embedding the database, and as far as I understand ClickOnce is a feature for use with embedded databases or user instance databases (not sure).

Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

Hi all,
In the last one and half years, I used the Northwind Database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to learn the programming of SqlConnections, Data sources, Database Exploere, ADO.NET 2.0, etc. via VB 2005 Express.
The Northwind Database in my SSMSE got lost very often, but I was not aware of it. How can I know where the Northwind Database is used or processed by my VB 2005 Express projects that were the examples of some tutorial books or my trial projects? How can I release the Northwind Database back to my SSMSE from the VB 2005 Express projects? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang
